I want to be able to move better, walk and exercise more, decrease if not eliminate my joint pain, lower BP so I no longer have to take meds and decrease or eliminate GERD. Also it will help my asthma.

My motivation is seeing the weight my daughter is at and she's only 18, seeing how much weight my husband has put on since he's been home from Afghanistan and knowing how that can affect his career, and the Dr. telling me I had only a few years before I was going to be in a wheelchair. I had my surgery on March 26, 2013 at Madigan Army Community Hospital with Dr. Blair, I wouldn't change it for the world.

My motivation is my grandson, I want to be around him and make sure he is going to be OK. His parents are divorced and pull him from one to the other. He is 5 and he tells me he want to live with me, I tell him he can't but at least we have the weekends. He is having a hard time a school, with no help at home. So I try to do the best I can on the 1 day in a half I have him.

I think what motivates me the most is the no scale victories I am having. So many things I am able to do now that I haven't be able to do. With so much more weight to come off, I get giddy thinking of all the more to come.

I am going to have my Gastric Bypass for my health-I have Diabetes and I want to have a better quality of life. I want to fit better into seats and be able to wear clothes better. It will help get rid of my knee, and lower back pains. I want to be able to do things that I cannot do now-to be more active.

I had gastric bypass 10//03/11. I have lost over 118 pounds and have 8 more pounds to go until I am considered a normal weight. My desire to be healthier for my children motivated me. I wanted to look good when I attended law school also helped keep me focused.

I am going to have Lap Band to better my health and my over all quality of life. I am 39 yrs. old and a single mom. I have a few co morbidities that are starting to become an issue and I have joint pain in my sholders, hips and knees and my heels also hurt. I cant play with my 3 yr old the way I did with my older boys when I was in my 20's. At that time I was 240 lbs.. now being older and much heavier at 335 lbs. and only 5'2" I worry about not being here for my 3 yr. old the way I am needed and not seeing the grandchildren that I will some day have. I also want to look in the mirror and like who I see... I want to be a better role model and have my children be proud of me.

I'm doing this for ME! I want to do the things I used to do. Without the extra weight I bet I can hike again with my husband, and have him sauy "Baby, you look hot!" . I can once again be the Mawmaw that will play tag and hide and seek with the grandkids. So, It will benefit my fammily and work, but the main motivatir is still me. I'm tired of the pain in my knees, in the embarassed awkwardness when I get up from the floor after playing with my nephew, tired of being scared of losing my job because I keep falling asleep. All those things benefit other, too, but I believe you have to do it for yourself first!

It's just another opinion.

I beleive an extended plateau is when you stay at a specific weight for a long period of time.
Myself I had the gastric sleeve operation and I feel wonderful. I would do this again if need be. I don't have all the restrictions tha the bypass or lapband surgeries have.Talk with your doctor about which surgery will be best for you. emoticon

I need to drop weight for myself. I am 5' 9" and weigh 364 pounds. On Friday during my regular appointment with my neph doc he suggested that IF I should hit an "extended plateau" (whatever THAT is supposed to mean! I really wish that docs would speak in regular English!) he suggested that I should consider having a lap-band system done.

That's good 'enuf for me! That is why I am here...for my family. For myself. :)

I have thought over and over for years about having this proceedure done. I am 5'3" and 240lbs. so I have 100 to lose to feel and look good and 127 to lose to be in my healthy BMI os 113 lbs for my height.

however what has me here today and sending out info to the clinic in mexico, is I discovered my husbands match.com account on thursday and uncovered emails of him planning a new life with a women in surrey BC.

I will be planning a new life as well, and it is going to start with my weight. It is not about my health at all, it is about how I look and how I feel about myself.

LONEROCKMOM, your post really resonated with me! While I certainly want to lose weight, the prospect of no longer needing CPAP and taking all of my meds really gets me excited! Not sure my wife is convinced yet that it is the right thing to do, but as long as all of the pre-op tests come back OK AND my insurance will cover it (they do but until they say "yes" I'm not going to assume anything), then I think this is the right thing for me to do.

I have my cardio stress test this coming Tuesday, so just a few more pre-op tests to go. Scary at times -- but as I said above, if I can go to bed at night without a mask on, and not have to pump my body full of drugs that who knows what they are doing, it will be worth it!

What motivated me was my health. Being diabetic, having high blood pressure and a bunch of other things, my Doctors thought weight loss surgery would be a good option for me. I was a little uneasy about it. I thought it would be kind of drastic for me sense I was only about 60 pounds over weight. But they both said that being only 4'11 and having the health issues I had that it was a good option. I had tried over 20 years to lose the weight and just couldn't do it.So we looked into it and found out that it would be completely covered with my insurance! I had the surgery 6 weeks ago. Since that time the doctors have dropped my insulin down from 40 units a day to just using the sliding scale if needed. They have dropped my blood pressure meds and I no longer have to use the sleep machine. I have lost 27 pounds in 6 weeks. We are so very excited to see what is in store for my health in the future. I didn't have a weight goal it was a health goal and I believe I am on my way.

My motivation is I am tired of being fat. I am in my 40's now and feel like I have experienced life on the side lines. I guess the final straw was that I am borderline diabetic. For some reason it was okay for me to take 4 high blood pressure medicines everyday but to have to start taking insulin--it just didn't sit right and I knew I needed to do something and get help.

For me, it is the realization that it will be very difficult to lose the weight I need to lose to be healthier without some medical help. I saw my Dr the other day for my every 3 month check-up (I have to see him and get blood work done every 3 months due to my Type 2 diabetes), and while my blood work results looked OK, my weight went back up (which seems to happen pretty much during the winter months). And what is frustrating is that I go to the gym 3x/week, power walk 2x/week (on the days I don't go to the gym), and do make a concerted effort to keep my daily calories around 2000 (I'm not always successful, but I try). The only time in recent memory that I was able to shed some serious pounds was back in 2007 when I did a "Biggest Loser" competition at my gym. In 3 months, I dropped 30 pounds, but that involved both altering my diet to a higher protein intake (plus restricting it to 1800 calories) AND 2 hours of workouts per day Monday through Friday. I maintained pretty well until we moved in 2008 and my diet/exercise plan went out the door, stress set in, and the pounds came back!

I am aware that weight loss surgery is not a magic bullet -- it takes effort. But I'd like to take advantage of what science is offering and work to be healthier.

What motivated me to have the surgery was my health, I was 350+ lbs when I decided, I was over 40 and the health issues that plagued my family (all of which are overweight) and my for my children, both had just finished high school and talking about the future and I want to be around to enjoy their joys as they proceed throughout their adult lives.

Easy - fear of dying young from the weight and all the co-morbidities I acquired along the way. I could tell the story here, but you're better off visiting my sparkpage and going back to my very first few blogs - where I tell the story in verbose detail :-)

I was 270lbs before having my daughter. @ the time of delivery I was well over 400. I could not lose the weight & every month off of work = another 10-1lbs gain. I had worked in a factory @ the time, so lay offs where part of the job. I always was tired, sore & would fall alseep behind the wheel while driving. I was just under 400lbs when my big day arrived. Now missing 5yrs of work I only gained 15 lbs. Now I am back on the path.
