Down to just over 4,000 on the Visa, though we're still close to the limit on our Discover. How's everybody else doing?

Not doing too brilliantly with my Visa or Discover card, but my Chase balance is totally clear. I still have $300 from my dental work from October, so that's about half done. I'll be putting $100 onto the Discover this week, so that's a plus, and I think the boyfriend's finally getting his stuff together, and is planning to give me at *least* $100 a week to put toward the cards and other debt. :: crosses fingers ::

Here are my recent figures:

Credit card debt:
11/29: 12,587.50
12/31: 14,950.88
Monthly increase of: 2,363.38
Total yearly decrease of: 2,653.59

Total debt balance (including all vehicles & mortgage):
11/29: 86,229.73
12/31: 88,147.61
Monthly increase of: 1,917.88
Total yearly decrease of: 13,332.30

Most of our increase this past month was due to the new flat-screen TV. There's no interest on it until 2011, but we plan to pay it off LONG before then.

We never did close on the loan to re-finance our mortgage, so it looks like we may well be back to the starting point early in 2009.

I appreciate everyone's support. Right now, I'm scheduled to have my CC's paid off by October 2009. As long as everything goes as plan and no events occur to prevent that. I will keep everyone apprised on my journey.

I'll definitely join in on the new thread, my hubby and I bought have credit card debt. We each only have oone credit card, I have a little over $5,000 in debt and he has about $3500 (my credit limit was higher than his for awhile so we used my card for bigger things-like major car repairs and some other tings-which is why my balance is higher.) We've been married since April 2008 so we're still newlyweds, it's been one heck of a year for us though-moneywise... we've struggled and still are, but we keep telling each other we'll get through this somehow, as long as we do it together, it will work.

I think we should start a new thread for 2009, so we'll be able to better track our progress for the entire year. Plus, it's kind of a "call" to other members here to see a new thread & decide to jump into the challenge.

This board really helps me see where I am spending too much and that I really need to cut down on my spending. My New Year's resolution is to use Quicken to make a budget and more importantly, stick to it! I'm so sick of having credit card bills, but for some reason have been using them more often these past few months. It has to stop!

Yes, we finally sold it -- after we dropped the price AGAIN! We started at $1500, dropped to $1000, dropped to $800, & sold at $600. By that point, DH just wanted it gone.

Here are my recent figures:

Credit card debt
10/3: 12,593.80
10/31: 12,583.98
Monthly decrease of: 9.82
Total yearly decrease of: 5,020.49

(With only 2 credit cards & 1 having a payment on the 1st, I'm getting weird balances. One month I show a big difference & the next month a low one. I'm sure this has to do with when the payments are made, so I just have to focus on the yearly decrease.)

Total debt balance (including all vehicles & mortgage):
10/3: 87,340.87
10/31: 86,544.69
Monthly decrease of: 796.18
Total yearly decrease of: 14,935.22

Of course, this is going to go up next month if we close on our loan on time!

Congrats on getting the one card lowered. Wells Fargo is one of the banks to just receive money from the bailout bill, so maybe given a little time, you'll be able to negotiate with them.

Well, I got my Discover card APR lowered. Doesn't affect my current balance, but it applies to all future purchases, so that's a plus. No give out of Wells Fargo on the Visa, but I'll be checking in with 'em again in the not too distant future. lol The Chase Visa is once again at a zero balance, so... yay!

well there's some goods and bads in our last month...

my car basically died and we decided not to do anymore with it (somebody wanted to buy it but he was thinking i wasn't selling till atleast dec, so don't know now). i've never had luck with used cars so hubby & i decided that we would go new. me, hubby and bank know own a 2009 honda fit sport. payment $359/month for 6 years at 7.49% and hubby is giving me $ also per month. i'm thinking it'll be paid in 3 years! be4 i knew how much for a payment, i was thinking that it would be $400 so they'll be about $100 extra each month emoticon .

good - i was looking for christmas presents last week, i always buy one cuzin a magazine that she LOVES and 2 others. thru amazon.com, i was able to buy house beautiful (2 years), country living (2 years), and redbook (2 years) --- all for $51 BUT if u signed up for their cc, it'd take off $30 and by buying during a certain timeframe, amazon.com will be giving me $5-10 per mag subscription. so i'm basically getting them for FREEEE!!!

okay, figs...

figures:

truck $400
hsbc $1990
citi $2000
student loan $250
CAR $25592 (if i take 6 years to pay)

7/18/08: $7140
8/15: $5880
9/15: $5060
10/18: 30232

It's a good idea... I may do some rate negotiation myself. A lower APR would definitely help!

Hmm, I wonder if Deb (ODebO) could advise you on this since she's an accountant. I didn't even realize there were both fixed & variable rates on credit cards. Ours always seems to be staying the same.

I just called both Discover and Chase to inquire about lower APRs and was approved for lower APRS for both! My Discover card was previously at 12.99% fixed and was lowered to 10.99% fixed. My Chase Visas (I have two but only carry a balance on one) were both lowered from 10.99% fixed to 7.99% variable. I know a fixed rate is better, but the woman said I could switch back to a fixed 10.99% rate if the variable rate increased. The variable rate, according to the customer service rep I spoke with, is going down with the stock market. If anyone has any advice regarding fixed vs. variable rate APRs, let me know!

The credit card with the 4.99% interest rate only has a $600 credit limit, so no, I can't do a balance transfer. I do, however, plan to call my other credit card companies to ask them to lower my rates (something I like to do periodically).

The 4.99% is a promotional rate because I hadn't used the card in quite awhile. In November, the interest rate goes up only on new purchases. Anything that is charged before November will remain at the 4.99% interest rate until the balance is paid.

Hey everyone! I just wanted to say a couple months ago I found this discussion and I think it's great! It really opened my eyes and encouraged me to stay postive about paying the debt off. I finally put all my debt down on paper and made a spreadsheet to track monthly. I have quite a bit of debt but this encourages me to stay on track with it. I can now see monthly if there's been any increases or decreases and change things if I need to. Luckily, the past 3 months I have only seen decreases and I'm now under the $50k mark. (This amount includes all debts-CC's, student loans, and vehicle) Also, I was able to pay off my wedding dress in 3 months! (versus a year it would've taken making only the minimum payment) I've also stopped using my credit cards completely! I keep one for emergencies but I don't even carry it with me so I won't be tempted. I know it's going to take some time and patience(something I don't have much of emoticon )But I'm trying to remain hopeful!!!

Kelly, just curious here, but I see that your GM Visa has an interest rate of 4.99%, while the other 3 cards are considerably higher. I don't suppose you could transfer the balance from your Discover card (the highest at 12.99%) to this card. If you could, you could pay down that $3K faster.

I hope we get a good amount from the insurance. We lost a bunch from water damage in our basement. Don't know how much we will get and worry that it might have to come out of our pocket. We will worry most about the major things like new carpet, get new drywall where it's damaged, new insulation. My DH is talking about wood flooring and a new couch. I told him that is not a priority right now. I am worried about the mold and that is NUMBER 1.
Don't know how fast I will be paying off the credit cards. Will worry about getting payment in on time, and send minumum or a little more right now until we find out about what we get from insurance.

Yup, now is the time to attack that credit card debt -- rather than wait like so many of us did when it's so high you're swimming in it! We started at over $25K in credit card debt & have cut it in half since 2/07, but it hasn't been easy.

Well, I guess I'll jump into this Challenge. I'm going to have a couple of opportunities to pay down my debt fast within the next month, so here are the numbers:

As of 9/15/08:
Visa: $2053.43
AmEx: $1850.77
Home Depot: $735.14

I just moved, so the HD card is for the new washer and dryer. Since that is no interest for 6 months, I want to pay off that first. Then the AmEx since it's the higher APR. Lastly, the Visa. The HD should be paid off next month with the money that should be coming in (depends on when, I know it is coming!). If not, then definitely done in November.

So there is my game plan! I guess I'll post back in a month or so to look at the progress!

Keep on budgeting and saving, everyone!

Well it's been a busy summer and I haven't really kept up with the teams or board since early August.

I haven't even figured out September's position yet. To say the least, I was going great guns...from August last year til June this year I had reduced my debt load...but summer hit and so did all hubby's plans for the house and vacation, and well things got a little out of hand again....

So here is to starting over! I won't post my actual for September 1st right now, because, like I said I have some calculations to do...but I'll start posting reductions again next month.

Good luck everybody! Keep up the good work.

CREDIT CARD DEBT
My hubby's = $601.16
Gas station = $346.60
My Credit card = $1,249.26

TOTAL DEBT = $2,247.02

If I figured right, I have $126 left of my paycheck that I don't need for bills that I can pay on a credit card at the end of tomorrow.

My numbers don't look great this month because I put $800 on my credit card because my car needed new struts to pass inspection. I've also been putting all of my gas on my Discover card for the 5% cash back. I put about $950 on my credit cards but the balance only increased $155.67 because I put most of August's "extra" paycheck toward credit card debt.

Hi All

I am new to this team, and I have 2 credit cards to pay down, need to get some money into my savings so I am not constantly living in fear of overdraft fees, and also have a loan to pay back from my parents in England.

I am already inspired by reading your posts!

Here are my recent figures:

Credit card debt
7/1: 13,130.92
8/1: 12,877.21
Monthly decrease of: 253.71
Total yearly decrease of: 4,727.26

Total debt balance (including all vehicles & mortgage):
7/1: 93,590.89
8/1: 89,232.18
Monthly decrease of: 4,358.71
Total yearly decrease of: 12,247.73

The big jump this time was due to selling my car. We paid off that loan, Dell, & will pay off the Home Depot DH just charged to buy his new grill (so that doesn't even show in these figures).

We started this whole debt reduction in 2007 & paid off the 1st credit card on 2/1/07. Since then we've reduced our credit card debt by $14,831.76 & our total overall debt by $32,068.90. We cashed in 2 small 401K's, refinanced DH's truck at a lower interest rate, & traded by car for a lower interest rate one, too, so that helped greatly to get the numbers down quickly.

Dear MISSEYD:

Actually yes...I needed to make a few changes in my lifestyle i.e. in a good way.

I stopped going to the mall weekly. I found I was spending more for things I do not need for emergency. I decided would not do impulse shopping until I get rid of my debt.

Also, goto groceries only twice a month. I do a list and stick to it. It works :)

Early from this year, I started driving very less, and walking more since I needed to lose weight. It helps in the gas cost as well as for my health. I lost 9 pounds since April 21st :)

I have a spreadsheet which has all the expenses and distributions of money I need to pay and keep for. It helps me to track everything until end of each year. So, I know when I can pay more money to get out of debt.

I have a blog where I tried to write down somethings I am trying to do to save and use the savings for paying my debts quickly:

http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public
_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=1318741

Hope this helps...I know you can do it. All the best! It needs a bit reorganization of the lifestyle, that's all. Little by little it'll work out ok :)

i've decided to try the snowball/debt stacking thing but in my own little way! i get paid every week but also know that i need gas every other week, always put $20 in my savings, and need to add $ in the checking so i won't have to use the cc's. so this by 8/1 the couch will be paid. and by the end of the year, my student loan will be paid. also in october, i will be taking my 4th paycheck at the end of the month and adding it to my savings account to make sure that i can handle a car payment but at the same time be able to have a down payment.

HOPEFULLY this will work for me, cross ur fingers!

Donna, Kelly, Mun, MisseyD, Sheepingly, you inspire me. YOU ROCK thank you for posting on this thread and keeping me excited about paying off my debt.

I have $2112.26 left. I have a paycheck I'm waiting on before batting a home run with this balance.

Think of all the good we can do for our families, our friends, our communities when we don't have all these debt payments! DELICIOSO!!!!!!

the last time i posted was the end of march ($8552).

that's with selling the used couch for what we bought it for and buying a new one (it was the biggest and cheapest at the store), taking my cuzin for the night (2 days off, hotel, food, activities), my hubby's kids here for 2 weeks, and lots of copays for doctor visits for me (high chol, tendenitis, cfs)

figures:

discover $550
truck ~$1300
hsbc $1870
citi $2100 balance transfer
student loan $1000, next payment date 8/09, when it's only $16/month and i don't pay that amount, hehe
couch $320

so as of 7/18/08:
we're at $7140

next week i'll hopefully repost with better #s.

but i am trying to add to my savings account and i want a new car but i MUST pay off 1 credit card of mine first and that's 3rd on the list. plus hubby is ready to trade in.

This is my current debt:

Credit card: $600
From friend: $600

Hopefully I'll try to pay it back in two months time.

I had total debt $10,800 and had to work up my way today to this point. It took me two years (in September will be two years) to pay back my credit debts. It has been a hard journey and I promise NEVER ever to go back to that point again.

I fully expect the month of June and July will see a negative net change, because we have quite a few bigger expenses coming up this month plus we will be using most of our little savings nest for our summer vacation.

One lonely CC/college loan at $5418. I teach in the public schools, so I plan to get as many part time jobs as I can this summer and go CRAZY on this debt.

Here's to all our success! emoticon

Well I didn't have the greatest month. Partly due to the trip to Syracuse for daughter's dance competition, partly due to the need to buy a few things for spring that I hadn't planned for, and partly due to tuition and books for the summer. At least those will be reimbursed by work, but I'll get hit with the interest for putting them on credit in the meantime.

Overall, debt went up by $546.56 ($450+ will be reimbursed though) and cash went down by $20.00. Not horrible...but certainly not a move in the right direction this month.

Looking at the big picture though, our net worth has increased $6000 since Jan 1, reflecting $2891 reduction in debt since that time, plus savings put aside.

Thanks Donna, when I don't get the reminder email I forget about certain threads. I will be posting my results on Thursday for April. They shouldn't be too bad, but not as good as they could be, had a trip out of town for a dance competition for my daughter.

I guess we need to revive this thread!

Here are my recent figures:

Credit card debt
4/1: 13,865.26
5/1: 13,664.22
Monthly decrease of: 201.04
Total yearly decrease of: 3,940.25

Total debt balance (including vehicles & mortgage):
4/1: 92,336.28
5/1: 91,176.84
Monthly decrease of: 1,159.44
Total yearly decrease of: 10,303.07

This is BEFORE upgrading my car. I figured I'd post now because the figures could look messed up since we'll be adding a loan for a while until we sell the old car. Once we sell that, we'll pay off that loan & a couple of other small debts.

This was mostly from cashing in that old 401K. Wish we could do that every month!

I don't post my results until after the 1st of the month, but I'm excited this time because we've paid off our IRS debt from 2005 & some credit cards: Sunoco, Sears, Lowe's, & Home Depot. We also have 2 other cards under $300 now, & Dell is under $900.
