This month I paid off a credit card and it was such a great feeling. I have another credit card which has a MUCH bigger balance due and I'm figuring out how to pay it off, while still being able to do work that I love.

I'll be debt free in June, 2013. We're now at the point where we save every month for emergencies. Good thing we did . . . we owed close to $5000 in federal taxes! emoticon

Where is everyone? I'm keeping the debt free goal of 2014.

A day at a time and I will reach my goal. I am not perfect but I will forgive myself for the mistakes I make. Life is full of choices and sometimes we don't always make the best ones but that's what makes us human.

I guess the easist way not to use the credit cards is not to carry them at all! I was able to consolidate my loans so that I only will have 1 card and 1 interest rate and 1 interest fee to deal with. I am starting to breathe again. Too many sleepless nights!

Thank you Charlotte. I'm forty eight and my goal is to have most of our debt paid off by the time I turn fifty. I turned 48 in Febuary so we have almost two years to do it. I have a plan and am starting with the highest interest first. That will be paid off by the end of September. The next one two months later. The others will take longer because they're for a larger amount but lower interest rates. May consolidate when we re-new our mortgage. Any advice on that. We have a really low interest rate. Less then 3%.

At age 64, I have one debt left: house payment through middle of 2013. We were heavily in debt in our mid-40's. It was bad enough that my husband thought we might have to declare bankruptcy. To get out of debt, we both got 2nd jobs for a couple of years to pay off the worst credit cards. We had a child; we did it anyway. We found work where at least one of us was home to be a parent to him. Now, we pay off our credit cards every month. We compared and shopped for credit cards. Any that had extra penalties for owning them, even if we didn't use them, we dumped. Credit cards terms change all the time, so keep on top of the game. Now, we have a credit union credit card.

We drive old cars. I bought my 2000 Mazda brand new in January 2001 when the price had already depreciated because the calendar flipped on December 31st. I still drive that car: maintaining a car is a WHOLE lot better than owning a high status car with all that debt driving you mad.

I don't buy the gas that's closest to me anymore. I go to Gasbuddy.com, find the cheapest gas in town and fill up when I'm out running errands and am close to that station. Plan your driving route in your head to save extra miles. There's no good reason to backtrack and cover the same miles twice.

We put off house vanity upkeep while we were massively in debt. Once free of it, then we saved up and did projects as we could afford them. So now the house is repainted outside, done by a pro, and we got some new landscaping in front. Working on one room at a time inside. One room per year: paint, furniture, etc. Recycling the old where possible. It's hard to look at that old, dreary bedroom daily, but now I have no debt anxiety, and that's huge.

Just some advice from a retired lady who retired 2 graduate student loans, 3 credit card loans and a second mortgage. Whew!

This challenge is exactly what I needed. I took a look at my finances and realized enough is enougn. I am tired of telling my girls that I can't update grown out clothes due to my having to pay on my credit cards at the same time. I started by taking them right out of my wallet, and if I try to touch them 1x except for emergency gasoline to get to work, I will deep freeze them. My biggest issue is that I am a sucker for Craft coupons especially the 40% off any 1 item. I am better at least now I only buy 1 item at each store and 90% of the time use my checking account debit card. I really have to ask myself do I need it now.

The second part was consolidating my cards. I was getting frustrated seeing $22-29 added to each bill each month when I didn't pay it off. So a $50 payment was actually only a $28 payment after subtracting the interest rate, OUCH! So I applied for the card through my bank easy to make payments and 0% interest for 12 months. Oh and I always pay double the minimum so hopefully this debt should be paid off in 10 months.

Hi,
what has worked for me is focusing on 1 bill at a time. I choose the bill with the highest interest and while paying the minimum on the others I pay twice the amount due on the one with the highest interest rate.
There was a time when my phone would would not stop ringing. All the debt collectors were calling. I finally told them - sorry but you have to wait on line. I can only do 1 at a time and your are not up yet.
It just takes discipline and dedication.

Good luck

Only 2 payments left? Good Job! I'm so jealous! hahaha I have a few million repayments to go before I'm clear hahaha.
I did change 2 of my loans to weekly repayments which has knocked 3 years off each loan :) was pretty happy with that hahaha.
OMG - if i worked it out right my changing the loans to weekly - by the time they are paid off we would have saved about $100K...wow - those banks are making killing! :S

I'm keen for a challenge ;)
Yasmin - yup 30 people - give or take :)
Both mine and my partners immediate family are quite large :( I've got 6 siblings & their partners, mum & dad, and he's got 4 siblings, 2 sets of parents as his parents are divorced, plus the little kids (nieces & nephews on both sides) which i think is the whole point of christmas - but they are quite young so they are quite cheap to buy for hahaha :)it's ok - we managed quite well this year with presents i think and we stuck to budget :) yay!

The bad news is - on christmas day - the car overheated so i think we're looking at replacing the radiator on the landcruiser which will be a few hundred dollars.... Hopefully thats all that needs replacing ... Ouch. :(

It came up this year at my family's xmas lunch - to do secret santa for the following xmas - and it was me and my sister against everyone else - so the answer was no, buy the presents and don't be stingy! lol

December figures.
homeloan $92819.16 down 1.43% ($1325.80) YAY!
LOC $3234.03 down 8% ($272.20) YAY!
total debt $577,772.94 down 0.26% ($1490.42) YAY!

Didn't reach december goal - but still went down so i'm not too fazed. Next goal under $91K for homeloan and LOC paid off by the end of January.

I know I can, I know I can, I know I can....

I re read that -30 PEOPLE TO BUY FOR?!?!?!?!
Surely you can cut a few people out Rach?!
My rule is: me and steve's parents get a gift, other than that only children under 16 get a gift, young adults 16-21 get a little bit of cash in an envelope -still sticking to budget.
AND THAT's it!
(perhaps a work secret santa but no more!)

I'm sure you can get rid of a few names off of that list!

In terms of WHAT to buy, yesterday I got two beautiful scarves from Austin Reed, they were meant to be £30 each but if you bought the Daily Telegraph newspaper (for £1.80) you could get the scarf for free! I'd like to say that we saved £56.40 but we would never have bought a scarf for £30 to begin with! lol!

So scour special offers, I keep my eye on moneysavingsexpert.com which is a UK site but try looking for some Oz ones!

OK, I got my car fixed and it passed it's MOT, it only ended up costing £180 even with all that welding and corrosion (thank goodness for mates rates!!!!!REALLY!!!!)

I haven't bothered with fixing the shower or the guttering but hey ho! I'm too busy thinking about Christmas! And yes I'm struggling here too! I also have set a £20 budget per person and I'm trying to stay below that where possible! But I've some how been roped into 4 different Christmas parties (because I work and volunteer in so many different places) so I think that my budget will be well and truly blown there!

November Debt:
:Mortgage: £56,852.56 (@4.99% fixed until 2014) - £501
:10% overpayment: £5,637.61 - £504.35
(I know this isn't actually a debt but it's how much I can pay off my mortgage each year without incurring penalties so I would like to try and shave off as much as I can so I'm gonna treat it like a debt til its paid off)

DEBT TOTAL: 62,490.17

December Debt:
:Mortgage: £56,351.56
:10% overpayment: £5,133.26

DEBT TOTAL: 61,484.82 (a reudction of £1,005.35)

DH and I have paid almost $20k off THIS YEAR! We own a small business and after attending FPU decided to run our business on cash only as well. We have saved more money this year than in the last 10 and are taking a trip to Hawaii in December that we saved for and is paid for. Don't fall for that "we need credit cards to pay for vacations." Debit cards, if they say Visa on them, are treated as credit cards and have the same protection by law! Good luck to us all!

2%??? Wow that is unheard of in Oz. The interest rate here atm is about 7%. The lowest I've seen it was about 5.5%? and that was about a year ago during the GFC.

WOOHOO!! Well done Racheal!!!! 7K!!!
4.99 was actually quite high when we got it last year, but we felt that we would prefer the secuirty of a fixed rate! They had very tempting trackers and two year fixed rates from around 2%!!!!

This looks like a great challenge! i've read the whole thing! Yes, way back to january!!! and I'm so ... inspired, psyched, READY!

Well almost, I'm gonna go and figure out which of my debts/ savings I want to track. Earlier this month I finally got rid of all my credit card debt. I use just one credit card for my monthly outgoings and I pay it off in full (I dont spend more than I have on it!)

I also just paid £3k onto my mortgage and I'm looking to be mortgage free by 33!!! (6 years) Woohoo!

I'll be back with my figures soon!

School Loans: Rounded up = 20,000
Right now I only make the minium payment which is 209.

CC 1: 322.46
CC 2: 750
CC 3: 1529.08
CC 4: 3210.83
CC 5: 1439.82

TOTAL: 27,252.19 This is a rough estimate because I'm not sure how much I owe on school loans.

Right now I am focusing on my CC's. By March 2012 I should have my CC's paid off if not sooner. By December 2010, I should only have 3 CC's to pay on.

My debt went up a little due to some credit card charges that I made in May for my sons' birthday. I plan on doing better this month. I have done a lot better staying with in my budget. I did go over in some categories, but overall I stayed under budget and that is a major improvement for me. Hoping July is an even better month for staying on budget.

FloridaGirl,

That is both my Bachelors and Masters degrees, which I attended private universities for both. So needless to say they were expense. Also as we were struggling with our finances I would put them in forbearance which would add the interest to the principal, unfortunately I did that twice before I was able to get a handle on my finances. We are in a lot better shape now so I pay half the payment every 2 weeks so after a year I have actually given an extra payment and I also pay less interest because I make the payments early. I started that in Nov 2009 and I have brought the principal down $300. Slowly but surely I will get rid of this loan.

I'm new to the team. I must admit that my finances are a mess right now. I have been out of work due to back problems since Easter 2009. My step son moved in with us last September and still hasn't found a job. But I finally got clearned to go back to work and have been dilligently working on getting work. Meanwhile, I have found out about lots of coupon sites. So, I will be utilizing these to at least save more money to pay off my credit card debts and my student loan. thanks for letting me read how you all are doing.

God grant me the serenity to change the things I can, to accept the things I cannot change, and the wisdom to know the difference.
