Frustration: Huge electric bill, $313. They say my variable rate kicked in. Coulda sworn I had a fixed rate. It used to be $97 or so each month. I just don't know how I'm going to pay it. I'm trying not to let it ruin the holiday, but it's almost impossible to stop thinking about it. All I can think about is food and money, the two things I'm trying to control. I'm sick at heart.

Daily success (yesterday): Went food shopping with limited funds. Did not get "inspired" to buy something I hadn't tried before - came home with just what was on my list. Win!

I'm here! I fully agree it's been kind of dead here, though.

Have you cut your driving to the bone? Kind of guessing you have, but in case not, here's a tip: Shop for groceries weekly or less often. And while we are talking food shopping, store brands have decent food too!

In my opinion personal finance books tends to be geared towards the people with more money and thus more options already, but if you can handle that I still recommend picking up a few.

Good luck!

Hmmm, I joined this group but now I see that it is not very active, it's been a while since anyone posted. Anybody out there? I'm struggling with having enough money to buy food and gasoline after paying my bills (IRS, car payment, home equity line of credit). So tired of feeling broke all the time.

Success: Did my research for a needed purchase (bike helmet) before going to the store so I knew exactly what I was after and what it cost - and where to go if they were out of it. Win!

First paycheck of the new school year............Today is the big day, the first paycheck of a new school year. I am a bit disappointed because of the new required deductions, the raise is pretty small (8.00 per month)......however I was able to pass on one small extra duty which will hopefully open up some time for me to exercise and do a better job of preparing healthy food! I am trying to focus on the positive....love my school, community, and school family. that means a lot. One financial goal reached........the past 3 years I have been gradually increasing the amount I give each month to church and charity...this is the first time that I will be able to give 10 percent. Yes, I still have other debts and am plugging away at those......but this was so important to me to get to the 10 percent !

Hi everyone. I will be moving on Sept 27th. I remembered to make a moving budget to make sure that I do not use credit and that it fits in with my existing budget. So far so good. A couple of items have already come back and they cost less than expected. Hope this continues.

I don't have credit cards, but I got caught in the payday loan trap. I have two plus a monthly bank loan. I pay them off on payday and take them up later in the months to pay bills. It started when my daughter needed a new computer for college. That was three years ago. Boy was that an expensive computer at this point. I am slowly weedling them down. $100 at a time. Hope to be done before another year goes by. emoticon

I'm working towards having my credit card paid off 10% of my line of credit and our truck before we renew our mortgage July 2013. A day at a time.

A day at a time and I will reach my goal. I am not perfect but I will forgive myself for the mistakes I make. Life is full of choices and sometimes we don't always make the best ones but that's what makes us human.

Good morning everyone. I have decided to move to a cheaper place. With the rent increase for my present apt it brings me up to breaking point. This will allow me to have soom spending money. I still work part-time taking care of 3 adults with multi-handicappes. I was not able to have a three year reduction plan. Mine is 5 years for now. I still have not received all the money owed to me since my dh's death. Hopefully Iwill be able to reduce my debt a bit more.

Take care everyone.

Hi Everyone.
Well I'm working towards my goals but I don't think I'll have the truck paid off by the end of September. Things keep coming up. My car blew the rad and need a wheelbearing and linkage. Always something but I'm still plugging away. New goal having the truck paid off before 2013, my small credit card and 10% of my line of credit. It can be done.
Glad things are going well Ginger151.

This month is going well despite the fact my paycheck was held up a week. But by making arrangements in advance I didn't have any majors problems or over drafted the account. What I have learned is that if you contact your bill collectors before there is a problem you can usually work something out. But the worse thing you can do is ignore it until it turns into a problem.
I am feeling stress free and having a good week despite the check problem and everything will work out like it is supposed to. emoticon

Have a great day!!!

We have cut way back on meals and treats eaten out. Saves money and calories too. Going on two weeks of behaving ourselves. I'm the cook, so it's more work for me, but I must admit I enjoy having more control over my caloric intake. Eating out is always chancy with hidden fats, portion sizes and carbs.

Trying to get my finances back in order. I am in the process of taking care of my dh's estate. Some of the money I usually get is frozen until the will search and to finalize the will. It will be difficult to make ends meet until this is all done.

How is everyone doing?

I make sure I have a route map before I drive anywhere and try to get in as many chores as possible along the way while executing the most economical route. Too bad that in the USA we have an entire culture built up since President Eisenhower that is dependent on cars. If there were sidewalks, I would walk to the gym (2 miles), but w/out those, the walk is unsafe. And, of course, the bus doesn't go that way. emoticon

Got the car this weekend Yeeha!! Filled up the tank with petrol and thats it till this time next month. It cost 60 so going to put 15 away each week so it should be easy to keep going. Also going to buy credit at the post office weekly to cover tax. (10 pw will cover it as I have some already). Need to be careful as don't want to end up with no cash for food! Have turned off the oil heating for the time being as the weather is so warm here, just keeping the hot water on.

Hope you are doing ok sparkers, feeling positive as having a car could lead to a new job. Have a great week, Love XX

Other ways we're saving only putting gas in one vechile most of the time. When gas is down I fill up my car and it lasts at least a month.

I've decided I'm really going to focus on getting my high interest loan paid off by September. That way I won't pay as much interest. Our truck blew a tranny and we had to do something quick. I know it can be done with discipline. So here comes the discipline. In June oil/heat will be done (equal billing for 5 months so to speak). That will free up money for Christmas. I've decided to do my Christmas shopping when inventory comes in November. No credit.
Bring on the challenge.

I know my greatest temptation is a coupon and a nearby Craft store, It is especially hard when just about every store I visit for my Pet Firm job is in a plaza with a craft store. BUT, today even with a coupon and a short walk, I bypassed the temptation to go in. I am so happy! emoticon

Hiya all, haven't posted for ages, been in hibernation! Managed to get one cc paid off completely. Only 2 to go now. Ennaid, so sorry that you are having a hard time, will remember you in my prayers. St Patricks day tomorrow but not going on our usual trip down south. More economical to stay home this time. Hope to stretch finances to get to the cinema on Sunday, its a cheaper price showing and the Muppets film is on. Hope we get there. Wishing you all a great weekend and keep sparking!! X

Good Morning everyone. My budget is so tight these days that any unexpected bills, such as dental, eye glasses, etc. are killing me. DH's cancer is spreading and he may need to be moved again to a long term care facility (more expensive) until he is ready for the palliative care centre at no cost. Hope I don't have to add to my debt load. I was doing well paying off the debt now I feel that I am going backwards.

Take care everyone

I've been reading through some post and I believe Bloor and I have the same goal. Debt free by 50. I turn 48 tomorrow so I have 24 months to reach that goal. Now not only do I have a place to be accountable for my eating I have a place to be accountable for my spending. Spark people is a great site and it's free can't beat that.

Definitely less stress. I had my hair cut again and I have received so many compliments that I look great, that I look younger or thinner. WoW I was impressed! Having put on a bit of make-up also made a huge difference. Had a hectic day today, I had coffee with a friend, had lunch with dh, went to visit my son and finally worked for two hours. Now I am home I can relax.

Chat with you soon

Hi Chris, When I quit work 4 years ago my salary made up 2/3 of our income. Losing that income was a major shock to my budget. I am still scrimping and savings and went back to work as back-up caregiver to earn extra income. And now I have two rents, 2 tel, 2 cable, 2 apt insurance and on and on. I have always found if you are careful and only spend what comes in you should be OK. I wish you luck while you try to rebalance the books!!

Bye for now

Dianne

I am looking at some decreased income. In May 2012 I won't be getting my work pay but I will start getting Social Security and a pension . I have been putting money away for retirement--not enough of course. who does?

I have been trying to record what i have been spending on an interactive online spreadsheet. it is an eye opener!

I will have to be using some savings for monthly bills: a big mortgage, daughter's college loan payments, utilities, van loan payment, home health aides for my husband....

I never worried about money, but I have been lying awake at night trying to cope with this.

Hi BloorP, my financial situation will change drastically in 2012. I had to place my dh into assisted living facility so many of our expenses double. So that means that what I used to pay each month to credit cards will have to be lowered (interest, purchases + $100.00. Not much but at least I am paying more than the debits for 1 month. I also only use credit cards for on-line purchases otherwise I pay cash, unless it is an emergency. I plan to be debt free by age 60 (about 16 mon).

I know all my expenses for the month because I write down a budget. U a probably doing the same with your food intake. It's easy. You would be surprised, just as those of you when you started logging your foods at how much you spend that u don't have to. Amazining! I am planning on being debt free by age 50. I have 21 monthes and a 6 figure debt. I will do it!

In addition to what you are already doing I have a five year budget to see what is going to be going on later. I posted all expenses for the month that I added up. Then I would have a different catagorie for each one. Add a month and see if your expenses are the same, or different. If it is more/less than previous month then you correct your budget. I have all this information in my computer so if there is a change or increase I just go to each month and put the adjusted amount. Do forget annual expenses as the will on show up annually you have to keep putting it in every time it is due. I have found this system works really well for me.
Here is a sample
Date - Description of expense - Debit/credit - amount of deb/cre - deduct amt of transaction from you bank balance. Then go further by naming every expense such as:

Rent
Car rental
C.C.
Electricity
Heating, etc.
Don;t forget to put away some for "Emergencies" and for savings.
You will find that if you correct the amounts from budget to actual will really help.

Go luck on your budgeting. Hope I was of some small help.

Together we may just get in the black eventually.maybe before 2025!!!!!!!!!!

But we are trying.

Bye Dianne

Congrats LM and Enaid on getting your debt down!!

S: My fiance and I started a calendar in our kitchen where we write down every cent we spend each day and what we bought. It's kept us accountable and discourages us to make silly purchases. :) Also I will be able to add up the amounts we spent on food, bills, etc at the end of each month to make our budget more accurate and create new goals. I'm looking forward to that part!!

F: My second job has been dwindling with hours lately. I don't make enough money to pay my bills with just my first job, so I've had to dip into savings the last few months to make ends meet. This is SO discouraging, it keeps me up at night. Trying to ignore the urge to go out and shop to make myself feel better. Thinking about getting a THIRD job, ugh.

I had a debt load of about $140.000.00 about 5 years ago. It is now down to $35,000.00 + my van which is about $20,000 left to pay on it. To get paid off sooner I pay every week and not every month. It makes a big difference interest wish.

But I still wish that I knew what I do now, I would have know earlier. I think if I had been on medication the way I am today, I could have avoided some pitfalls in my life. But live and learn and now I am very careful. So every one :think before you spend - calculate how long it will take you to pay it back and how much you lose when paying interest.

Have a good evening. Dianne

Hi MrFuss. I know what it feels like to be under a load of debt. In 2008 I fell into a major depression. I had just had an addition to my house. I was in a super manic phase before the depression. I did all the interior by myself. The add on consisted of a dining room, great room, bathroom, large walk in closet with individual areas. I also added on a garage and a paint studio for my husband in a room attched to the back of the garage. I must have been insane to try to do such a large projet like that. While I really enjoyed doing the interior and making some furniture it burnt me up interally. I had a home for three adults plus my husband (he had a major stroke). with multiple physical and intellectual disability. When I decided to stop caring for the three clients I had to sell my home. I made a really, really large sum of money. This was like cutting your budget by 75%. I had some equity on the house so I got back some money at the sale. But I had all my credit cards maxed out due to extension being built. I was so stressed at not having an income and paying off my debt. I must have had about 10 credit cards. So far I am down to 3 only each of which will be paid off as soon as I can. I make it a rule to pay every month: any purchases + interest and $100 or $200 on top of that. The debt is slowly being paid off.

I have stopped using the credit cards except one which I need for items I order by the internet. But again these monthly amount MUST be paid at the end of the month. I am building an emergency fund for any unexpected bills (such as car repair, major dental work that cannot be put off in cash.

Everything else gets paid by cash. That way the amount is always going down.

Good luck with your budgeting and healthy budgeting habits.

Take care Dianne

I was feeling like there was no hope to ever get ahead. I will be 80 before the mortgage is paid and prob won't even live that long! But I decided to work really hard on not spending any money not needed to live. I will contribute what I can to an emergency fund and try to put even anything extra to the mortgage in case I do live that long. This amazingly has given me back a sense of control over things. As long as I don't lose my job, I feel more peaceful about things for now.

Peace does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble, or hard work. It means to be in the midst of these things and still be calm in your heart.

Great new!!

I was starting to do really well with my budget but now that my husband will be placed in an Assisted Living Facility I have to include the costs (quite high) for his care. I have not worked outside the home in about 17 years. I don't plan to go back. So I will go back to the drawing board to figure out how this will after me after he is gone. I always have a 5 yr budget to make sure that my spending is in line for the future.

Things are looking up and I am hoping that they stay this way. Not perfect but at least I am not overdrawn in my checking acct. That is a small victory but I will take it and keep on going.

I had to stop work 4 years ago to take care of my sick husband. It was certainly a shock to me system as I earned a very good salary. I had to sell my house and rent an apartment. I had an very large cc debt. I have managed to pay off about 60% and have been getting rid of credit cards as I go. Use to have about 10 - now I am down to 3. I was hoping to finish paying everything off within 3 years. However I am coming up to a major problem. My husband has reach a point where the doctor has recommended he be placed in a long term care facility. As I live on my husband private pension & his government pensions, if I have to put him in care I am not sure that I will be able to make ends meet for me. I may have to get a part time job at the age of 58! I have been a caregiver for the last 30 years and it is not something that I can continue with. So I will now have to start redoing the budget for the next few years and see if we can make it. My husband has dementia and terminal lung cancer.

your friends couuld be right! Maybe he wants to spend more time with you! Thanks, I signed up with mint after you started and said how good it was. I haven't progressed much past entering my cc accounts, but want to get the budget set up. Unfortuntely, my bank isn't linked up with them as yet, so I can't do much with that part of it. I do like getting the weekly reports. Especially when there are payments made and I see the increase in my net worth. I like that alot. I need to spend some e more time on it, so I can do the budgets and add some more debt info.
s: I rescheduled some payments, so I can make them all without completely missing a month. So hopefully I can get things caught up and going back on track. The best news is that I am eating according to plan and losing weight. I need to change my ticker. It was wonderful to put on a pair of jeans on saturday that I haven't been able to wear without spanx and discomfort in the past. I was surprised that I had to keep hiking them up. So, sunday I tried a size smaller pair. Telling myself all the while not to be upset that they wouldn't fit....they fit!!! Super surprised and pleased!

f: still very broke. It's going to be a scramble for awhile even with the changes I made. One day at a time though, and I'll be back on track.

Shelley, have you tried using mint's website for budgeting? I've used it and really liked it. They actually even send you a financial email every Friday so you know how you spent your money each week.

Successes: I went to the gym for an hour today. I'm on a hard core gym kick, which I'm hoping to be able to keep up with. Breakfast and lunch were healthy, and I had some almonds as a snack before I went to the gym. I'm going out to dinner with a friend tomorrow night, and I have a buy one get one free coupon so we won't be spending much money.

Frustrations: Dinner wasn't healthy. I had a bowl of broccoli cheese soup from Panera and a bowl of ice cream from Maggy Moos. The broccoli cheese soup probably would have been fine if I didn't follow it with a ton of ice cream. Now I have a food hangover. Ugh. Someone backed into my car this weekend and left a huge dent in the bumper. I got an estimate today, and it's getting fixed next week. Luckily the lady that hit me was able to give her credit card info to the body shop over the phone, so it won't cost me a cent. I'm borrowing a car from a friend, and the only catch is that I have to drive him to work the 2 days I'll need it. My friends said he suggested this arrangement so he gets to see me haha.

thanks Kelly! I like eggplant, it's too bad that recipe didn't turn out. I have been tring something new with my eating. I have been doing low carb 6 das a week and taking saturday as a binge day to eat whatever I want. So far it's working really well. I've lost inches, not sure how many, since I measured myself after the first week, and haven't compared the other measurements yet, but in pounds I have lost over 7 in 2 weeks. I want to start incorporating more raw foods into this as I go, I am very convinced it is a healthier way to eat, but for now I am just going with convenience.

S: not much. I paid some on my dental bill. Got new tires for my car, which the are letting me make payments on. I'm still doing my credit counseling, and my balances are finally showing some encouraging progress.

f: the past couple of weeks I have been living hand to mouth I am not sure what got me put behind, but I am having a hard time getting out of it. I think I need to talk to citifinancial to see if the will let me skip a payment or 2 until I can get ahead of things, but I only want to do that as a last resort. I am going to try to budget carefully and cut what I can for now.

Thanks for the birthday wishes, and HAPPY (belated) BIRTHDAY SHELLY!

Successes: I went to the gym today and yesterday. I balanced my checkbook, and now I still have to pay bills. I also almost paid off my entire Victoria's Secret balance, and today I paid my Comcast bill that's about a year overdue. I've since switched to Dish because it's much cheaper, but unfortunately that means I don't get to watch many Phillies games.

Frustrations: Last night I made an eggplant recipe I found on sparkpeople, which turned out to be fairly bland. Eggplant isn't my favorite vegetable. Tonight I went to Friendly's with my parents, which of course wasn't a very healthy dinner.

Happy belated birthday Kelly! You are my birthday buddy, so I have no excuse for being so late to tell you other than I have been so overwhelmed, that I have been mia on here too.
s: I didn't spend any money. And made progress on my house. Which a big success for me.
f: I didn't get as much done as I would have liked. And I am very broke this week.

F - Sorry I've been MIA for a little while. We didn't make our food budget goal for August and I got bummed about it. We had a houseguest at the end of the month who had gluten free and dairy free needs so that pushed us over PLUS the hurricane was the same weekend so we had to stock up on unexpected nonperishable stuff.

S - It's a new month and I'm excited to attack the challenge again.

Spark helped me reach my goal weight so hopefully it can also help me get my budget on track :)

Paid my first half of my monthly bills, looks good so far. I am keeping a positive attitude and working on a brighter future every month. I even had enough to get my daughters baby shower gift out of layaway. If k marts ever stops layaway I will be in trouble, that is how I do all my shopping when ever possible.

Have a great day!!!

S: I went to the gym for the third day in a row and did 65 minutes on the elliptical machine. My friend took me out to dinner for my birthday, which was Saturday. We go every month to catch up, and always have a good time.

F: I spent $85 at the Under Armour outlet, but having workout clothing I really like makes me excited to go to the gym. I got 3 tank tops, matching sports bra and underwear, and a hoodie.
