LISHDN is right, write EVERYTHING down. You will then be able to see where the money is going and you will be able to make changes more easily, cutting back here and there.

Also, pay yourself first. It does not have to be much, but the best way is to decide on a percentage (say 5% or 10%) and then budget the rest among your bills. You should also have an emergency fund for unexpected emergencies (not sales, christmas, etc.).

Good luck to all,

I will keep you all in my prayers. One of the things I have been doing lately is coupon shopping, brown bagging, lunch, and saving change. I know it is not much, but by taking the money that I normally would have spent on the above items (less coupons, take out/fast food) and putting that money into a savings account. I have been able to save $300.00 in just 4 weeks! I have cut my grocery bill from (family of 4) from $150 per week to about $75- $100 per week just buy using coupons. Check out the website WWW.couponmom.com
Best Wishes!

I also have a spreadsheet for my expenses. I've been doing this for years, & it's always worked well for me. This year I've created ones for DH -- for his business & personal accounts. I think he may be in for some eye openers by me keeping these current & him keeping the business data entry current!

I find that my financial situation is very much like my over weight situation. A lack of knowledge of what I spent and what I ate was once very clear. I was always lazy which meant not tracking my money or my food or practicing good habits such as exercise and saving. We can learn a lot from this journey.

That is a very good suggestion. Tracking your money is like tracking your eating...you don't realize how much you are doing of either until you see it!

By the way, I noticed everyone who responded on this subject has a weight tracker that is going down. CONGRATULATIONS to each of you on your weight loss. It's very inspiring and just makes me even more proud to be a Sparker. Even if our debt isn't decreasing, our waist line is and that makes me do the Happy Dance!

This month I am tracking everything I spend. From quick trips to the market to large payments. I need to see where the money is going because I should be paying off my debt faster than I am. And I'm not purchasing items that I don't need. So if you aren't already, create a spreadsheet, write down what you spent, what you bought and the date. I am creating a spreadsheet for each month of this year. I also keep the spreadsheets on a thumb drive that I carry with me in my purse, since I am always on a computer, I can pop it in anywhere, update the spreadsheet and keep tabs of it. I also did a spreadsheet for ALL debt expenses, one for financial improvements I can make in 2008 and one for donations. Although we don't donate a lot of money, we do try when we can because eventually it bounces back to you...kind of like love. Anyways, the best way to find out where the money is going is to track it.

The only thing you can change is yourself, but sometimes that changes everything.

Sorry to hear about everyone's frustrations. I am having some financial difficulties too this month...on paper it just doesn't seem possible but in reality it is! I think I am going to try to get a loan today to get me caught up. Once I catch up, I will at least be able to manage.

Hope it all works out for everyone.

Sorry to hear you're struggling this month, Donna, but rest assured that it happens to all of us. I'll be going along wonderfully, and then all of a sudden I have a bad month. I don't know what it is, but we can't expect perfection. I'm sure you'll find the money somewhere and then get back on track again. The key is in turning it back around as soon as you can . . . but you know that. You taught me!

Don't count the days; make the days count.

I know the feeling. I'm pretty discouraged at the moment. I don't know how we're going to pay the mortgage this month. I can figure out everything else (by charging a few things), but I can't come up with the mortgage money. I'm hoping DH will get a big job to do in the shop.

Keep your chin up...I always have this expectation that there will be extra money when there are three pays, but I find that's not true...I budget bi-weekly, and even with three pays, bills often are coming out then before the first pay in the next month which would be around the middle of Feb, when Jan is a 3 pay month, and so on....so the extra tends to not really be extra, if that makes sense, although sometime later in the year, when there is a second 3 pay month, then sometimes you see the effect.

We will all get there in time.

I got paid 3 times in January... now I'm looking at my bank account, and wondering where all the money went?!?!?! I paid off a credit card using my spread the check account (my summer money - I can afford to put all the money back by the end of June) but that should not have affected my total account balance! There should be an extra chunk of money in there! I'm trying so hard to not spend any unnecessary money, but it is so disappointing when there is nothing to transfer to Savings! How can I get a new car with no down payment? It's so disheartening when I've been trying so hard! UGH!!! I had to vent! The money will come, I just have to keep doing what I'm doing.
