It was the positive and negative that I was stuck on. I always ended up trying to make a third column; dollars don't work in the third dimension.

You should be able to do it in that. All I did was list income and expenses on the left, and the month listed at the top. Then, I entered income as a positive number and expenses as a negative. At the bottom, I put in a calculation adding the column (the month) up, and that would tell me how much I was over/short for that month. Basically gives you a real view of where all your money is going. Good luck!

Hi Susen,
I haven't seen the show "All Maxed out". It sounds like from the title I belong on the show too! I have seen a show called "Big Spender" that runs on the TLC channel. I bet they are similar.

Thanks, Carol

You would need to have the program Excel (which I do believe is part of the office package). Send me your email address if you have it, and I will email it to you.

Being a total disaster with making spreadsheets, I'm quite interested as well. Would I need Office to open it?

I will glady send to you if you let me know your email address. I have used the money program in the past, and it wasn't bad (it even allowed you to download your banking information into the program).

Oh Carolyn - we are two peas in a pod! We don't have anything like The Christmas Account at work, and I know it will be a challenge to leave the account I set up for that alone. Like you, I really need help. I'd love to be on that "All Maxed Out" TV show. Maybe with that kind of coaching and accountability I could learn to stop spending faster than I earn.

I'd sure appreciate a copy of that Spreadsheet, too.
I want to look into buying a program that will work like that for me. Maybe I'll check that out this weekend and let you know what I find.

Sure, but I don't know how to email an attachment within Sparkpeople? If you send me your email address, I can send it to you that way?

Okay, so I set it up with expenses listed on the left, and the month listed at the top. The very bottom is the over/excess budget (at the bottom of the list of expenses). I put income first (positive number), and list all expenses below that. I enter the expenses in as negative. Then the over/excess budget is a formula adding all of the columns together. It really helped me to see where all my money has been going for the last four months. It's like keeping track of what you eat - you are more careful when you see what you are spending down on paper. I'd be happy to email a blank one to whoever would like it - just let me know your email address.

I too would love it if you could e-mail the excel spreadsheet info!

Susen,
I have an idea for you. Does your work or area bank have a Christmas Club account you can join to start that savings plan? Preferably a direct deposit account. That is the one thing that I finally got right! I have been on my current job for 14 years and joined the plan then at just $5 per pay check for the first year. Every year thereafter I have increased the amount by an additional $5.00. It makes for a nice check before the holidays, and I have never missed the money that goes right into that account because I never see it to begin with. I also try to apply that same principal to a regular savings account, but the problem for me there becomes that the savings account is accessible whenever I need it(unlike the Christmas club) and I usually get into it before it really accumulates much of anything. My biggest hurdle is shopping. How to stop buying things. When I am not over eating, I am over spending and using credit cards to live beyond my means. Help !
Carolyn

Hi all,
I am interested in the spreadsheet to. Could you email us a copy without your numbers or directions on how to set it up for ourselves?
Its Jan. folks time to get down and dirty to clean up our acts. Even if were on the right track we still need to keep a check on ourselves so we don't stumble or in my case have a lapse in judgment. Really fell off the wagon in Dec. But like its been said "its a new year and I am optimistic". Bye all ejb1970

I'm interested in how you set up the Exel spreadsheet to track finances? Sounds like something I'd really like to do.

Hi, I'm new to this Team, as well. I've never been good with money and I've never been able to save.
So, when my Mom passed away in mid-October, I had to take out a loan to pay for her funeral! My car was stolen in November 2006, so I bought a new car. My Mastercard was at $11,000. So, I've canceled my Mastercard and took out a loan to pay it off, too.
I now have $652 a month going to pay for the funeral/Mastercard loan, $410 a month to pay for my car, and then there's the utilities, gas, groceries, etc. I need some SERIOUS encouragement! One goal this year is to save between $10 & $20 each paycheque to go towards Christmas 2008 expenses. I've got to try to somehow build some savings in case of emergencies, as I have NO cushion right now.

I hope this group is the godsend I hope it can be!

Happy New Year everyone!

Brightest blessings,
Susen

Hello,
I also have just joined. My finances alternate from chaos to success and back again. I have made a mess for myself as we are on a monthly pension but the budget for Jan. is kaput. I'm needing to do some creative accounting to survive this month.
However it's a new year, so I'm optimistic it will be a good one.

I am also new (just joined 15 minutes ago) and love the idea of money tracking and designating cash envelopes for problem areas. I will start the tracking process today! I am almost afraid to see where my money really goes. My first step in saving is bringing lunches to work. Our office orders out or eats out a lot. This usually costs me an average of $5-$7 per day. which is $25-$35 per week, and a whopping $100-$140 per month. I am seeing my savings starting to grow!

Wanted to introduce myself......have been tracking every penny for the last 4 months of last year in an Excel spreadsheet to see where it's all going. Highly recommend doing this to anyone who hasn't, because there will be some surprises for you. Now, with the new year, I am going to do some cash envelopes for areas where I have problems (once the cash is gone, I am done spending in that area). Just came across this team last week, and looking forward to chatting and learning with all of you!
