Toudles, a grandson can only be a toddler for such a short time, that the value of your exercise is high on MY charts!

Yup. Feeling joy can be healthier than panting from an impressive exercise program.

This may sound silly but...
Just before I hurt my foot and ankle last May (still gives me trouble at times but I couldn't walk far for MONTHS), I bought a FreedomCycle. One of those pedal things that (I did indicate silly but maybe "lame" fits?) uses a motor to revolve pedals. Why? Because I can exercise my legs when I'm 'at rest' just reading or watching tv . I bought it to exercise while NOT exercising. For months I couldn't use it at all, but as my ankle healed my physical therapist encouraged me to do it slowly and then at faster speeds. Apparently, it helped with some degree of the healing. Yet the initial fact remains: when sitting 'doing nothing' even twiddling our thumbs burns more calories than just sitting still. This thing has a gizmo that shoes how many calories I burn. Frankly, it was surprising how they add up when you set it to a faster speed and watch a whole movie!

Sam like you I have problems with exercise, my exercise is mostly walking, but it is easy for me to get distracted. Alot of the exercise minutes I log are playing with children... I know that my "play" with my 21 mo. old grandson rarely leaves me breathless, or sweating.. but I feel the pure joy of it is so good for me in so many ways it deserves to be logged.

Glad you're back regularly! Love the changes you've made; these non-scale changes like food/health attitudes mean more than 'mere' loss in pounds... which is so evident by the change in your colesterole numbers! My weight-loss is really slow, making most of the tortoise-rate losers look like fast bunnies; but to me this site has been a joy because it lets me know that I AM on track, and like you I've seen huge NSV's. The weight? Well, that takes exercise, which for me with fibromyalgia/mps and other limitations is a problem. But I'm on top of it, doing my best, seeing progress and mostly? am feeling soooooo much better!

Still here.. I think permanently this time.. I have come and gone and fooled around with it. But I came back regularly on Sept 16 this year. Seems I have a new attitude about food and health. I am eating very 'clean' now and can't believe how much progress I have made in just a couple of months. I have dropped my total colesterol from 197 to 88. I have lost 21 lbs.

My Sparkaversary is in late March (joined in 2007), so I too check with my original Class team at anniversary time.... but also periodically or when someone posts something in it (yup, they do on occasion!)... and am in touch with one of my classmates. In fact, we by chance were paired by Jen to co-lead a class team one year; it was such fun to do that together, because we had the same 'roots'! I've led several class teams under my username "GrandmaSam" but changed to "Sam60SumThink" 2.5 years ago when I turned 60, just for the fun of it. (Love word play.) However, after creating the name I realized it's sort of gender neutral. But it's too late to add "Mz" in front of the name! I discovered too late that I should have sent an email out to my friends' list because many people no longer 'recognized' me! lol

I think of each of several class teams I've led as a home base for anyone who just wants to reach out, get back to basics, so I try to post on occasion to keep the team/s open for them. As long as someone is posting the team will remain 'active'.

Hi, Jeanne!

Well, it's hard to say whether they're still active on the site because many people 'leave' the class teams so they could be here but just not on the team. I like to think that many are still here even though not HERE (on this particular team).

Hope all is going well with you?

Glad you're still here, Honey-Bee!
Posting here or anywhere on the site isn't what counts.
Continuing to grown in your journey is different for each of us.
Sometimes we come here to get support for losing weight and find ourselves nourturing ourselves in so MANY ways that we can only use that one word to describe the process: journey.

Enjoy the journey. That's probably one of my favorite phrases, right up there with "Be the Best You Can BE!"!!!

OOOPS, sorry I missed the email that you'd posted a message Robin! I think that really THINKING about and doing the stages does help... simply because doing this makes us aware of what we're doing, gives a change to consider making little changes here and there. And those little changes do add up. What seems most boring or mundane is most likely to be an area that needs focus, or so my experience tells me.

I'm sure eager for warmer weather and snowless landscapes so that I can get into a walking routine outdoors! I've actually invested in a Wii and the Wii Fitness Plus progam (a huge investment for me!). It was a big decision, but I do enjoy the challenge of it and find it a 'fun' passtime. My goal is not great, just to be healthy and feel good. I think the Wii helps.

To be honest, I am not doing the stages. I don't think I did the first time around either. I didn't quite 'get" them the first time...or I never took the time to really read them.

I should go check that out. Perhaps I'm missing something really important!!

Have a great day!

Hi Robin.... and welcome back !

Going through the Stages feels a little different for me each time I do it; how about you?

Last year I was in Weight Watchers for a while. Did NOT like the points, because I felt they're not 'grounded'. To me, the SP 'nutrients balanced within calorie range' simply makes SENSE and... keeps me aware of overall healthy eating habits. WW used to do that in the 70's, only they did numbers of servings of food groups (not nutrients) within alotted calorie ranges. Guess they keep changing to keep people attending meetings rather than to keep people consistent?

Keep us posted on progress!!!

Hi Group

I just started back up again. I've been on and off the last two years...since I joined SP. I am in a challenge and super motivated to stick with it. I"m heading into week 4 already. I am counting calories. It's going well so far. Glad to be back Sparking and keeping track again. Feels nice.

Glad to see there are some of you still here!

Robin

Both. I make goals, but there is nothing for me to "get" but I have never been big with goals in my life either.

I have changed habits in the past, and they don't make a difference, even after weeks or months. . .

allocating time doesn't work for me, because even if 1. If I set a timer, I would still stay on past my time :p I have a slight addiction to the internet. And I am slightly OCD, so if not everything is done, not every message replied to (that I am replying to) not every group is huddled, I can't focus.

2. I am exercising. That has NEVER been my issue, even when I don't use the site. I ride my bike to work (almost) everyday. I plan on kicking that up a little more, I recently moved to a new area, and there is a bike path I can ride on, I just need to find it :)

Thanks!

When you refer to goals, do you mean goals in terms of pounds-to-lose or do you mean in general?

Wonder if this would be helpful to you:
Why not think of changing habits for now, rather than thinking in terms of pounds?

It seems to me (?) that you get onto the site and all that is available is just too much to handle in terms of time-to-do and in terms of having to fit all that into life's other schedules, yes?? Let's see if we can't find a way for you to use this site so that it is what it is supposed to be: a helpful tool for you to use to your advantage.

A few key questions:

1. If you alloted 10-15 minutes a day to this site, how would you spend that time to get the most benefit to yourself?

2. Are you exercising, increasing daily activity?

======================

The key for you to make this site work, to help you be consistent is going to be remembering this word and letting it be a guiding principal in how you approach your goals:

Simplify.

You don't have to do everything at once.
Think of one change - one small habit, maybe - that you can focus on making. Create a 'streak', and persist in making this change simply a newer part of an improving lifestyle.

Example.
Exercise. Let's say you seldom have/find time for it. Ok. Create a streak, vowing to spend 10 minutes a day...MOVING. Note that I am indicating that it does not matter what that exercise is, just that you DO it. That you move. That you increase your activity. It could be swinging your arms while walking in place in front of the tv! If you create the habit of moving 10 minutes a day, you can later add other forms of exercise. Or from the start, just do something different every day...but for that 10 (or 30, etc) minutes you've created as your streak goal.

Do nothing that feels punitive. Don't think "diet" unless you think of that word in its true meaning "nutrition plan"! Do think in terms of improving how you live, finding joy in exploring new activities and experimenting with new foods in the produce department.

Right now I'm mostly active in the 55+ Females team, but I remain committed to everyone in this and every other class team I've led. In December I'll be offline for a bit over a month (again), but other than that, please PLEASE remember: I am only a Sparkmail -and probably a few timezones?- away. Let me help if I can as you find a way to find it pleasurable to be consistent in making the changes that will help you reach your goals!

well I am on the site for a while then it kind of becomes too much, I don't have time to do everything.

goals don't work well for me, I tried to set them on WW, but I just got discouraged when I was gaining and losing 3 lbs every week. . .

Hi, Sewcute!
So glad you're still here. Hmm... but on and off, huh? Do you find that you are all 'into it' for a while and then drift off? Consider modifying how you use the site so that your efforts on and especially (!) off the site are consistent.

Question: do you have short- medium-, and long-term goals? Take a look at the short-term ones because they sure are important. Make them attainable, so that you feel motivated and enjoy success on the journey toward ultimate goals?

Above all? ENJOY the journey.

My progress in terms of pounds is really slow, but in terms of lifestyle changes it's been steady. In the four years I've been here my habits have changed greatly.

Periodically I bump into members of the class team so I know many really are still 'here', just not wellll "HERE"! :)

I'm getting ready for a trip back home and will be offline in a week for over a month, so I just wanted to stop by to see if anything is new since I had to stop subscribing to posts several months ago. it's GREAT to see the team is still bringing some of you back.

I wasn't committed when I joined 18 months ago.
But I committed myself (!) April 16. Since then I have shed a few pounds, come to understand that this is lifestyle change, and feel excited and confident.
I like the changes made to the website over the past 18 months.

Have a great day everyone, and drink a (water) toast to yourself!

I've struggled up and down since early 2009. I went through some mild depressions and, still living with my parents, I continue to struggle against their unhealthy ways of living and too often just follow the trend they set. (My mom does try. I just wish I could get her to join SP with me.)

I have approximately 3 weeks until I graduate and it hurts knowing that my goal of being right at or under 200 pounds is now going to be just another failed attempt. So, I'm back. Back to try and rid myself of this new failed attitude. In fact, I have a paper due in my capstone course in which I have to write about a community I belong to and I have begun writing it on SparkPeople.

As I've been writing it, it has motivated me to get back in the game. It's motivated me to try and figure out where I can succeed this time. I've decided I'm going to make a list of the traps I set for myself so I can avoid making the same mistakes.

You know, I think so many times we come back hoping this time will be different, but (unscientifically speaking) 8/10 times it isn't because we never really study what caused us to fail the time before. At least in my experience, I get all excited, but before long it turns into "Well, I'm losing steam. I hope I magically get it back before I fall off the bandwagon again." But unless some life changing event forces us to stick with it, complacency comes knocking and we invite it in for a smorgasbord.

Well, I guess that's about all I have to share for now, lol. Just my way of checking in and letting everyone know I'm going to try again.

I'm just like everybody else, only different.

Current Goal -
10 Percent Gone at 212lbs

"I just entered this brand new world and I'm so openhearted. I know I've got a long way to go, but I'm just getting started. I'm over my head and I know it, I know it. I'm doing my best not to show it, to show it. Whatever it takes to be all I was meant to be, I'm gonna try."
- from Demi Lovato's song "Me, Myself and Time"

Oh I'm still around. First I gained a few pounds then, as of November 2009 I managed to take 10 pounds off and keep it off. I haven't quite found that "push" I need to really get motivated. I have learned a lot about myself and one thing is for sure, I just love my food, always have. I've been loving it in moderation lately, hoping that will help. How's everyone else?

Success is not measured by what a person accomplishes, but by the opposition they have encountered, and by the courage with which they have maintained the struggle against overwhelming odds.

Sooo, I'm alive, kept off my original 20 pounds lost but I relapsed and so now, I'm back and reset all my goals. I just got out of a nine day stay in the hospital, talk about a wake up call! Yeah I need to lose weight for my health and to just feel good again. The hardest part for me is getting back into an exercise routine, but I have started tracking and drinking water. How are all of you??

Just dropping in to say hello to my "joining buddies." I'm down nearly 30 pounds, but still have about that much to go. It's a slow journey.

I'm still here but the weight loss has been non-existent; I have actually gained weight over the last few months from a combination of not working (my job was very physical and I've been on a medical leave since February) and quitting smoking. Quitting smoking is a very good thing, even if I have gained weight.

I have been participating with a group for weight-loss surgery. I am still in the pre-op phase but hope to have my surgery date sometime in the next week or so. I go in for my consultation with surgeon on Thursday.

Anyway, I'm still here.

Hi, I'm still here as well.

I have a renewed spirit now compared to when I signed up for sparks. I strive on a daily basis to truly make a change in my life to be a healthier person. By first renewing my mind daily on how and why I need to do this. Second prepare ahead of time so that I will not eat the wrong things or too much of the good things. Third pulling myself up and moving, not only doing a workout routine but also not letting my self stay sedentary for more than fifthteen minutes at a time (especially in the evening after dinner).

OK that's enough for today (I can go on and on but I won't for now)
I wish you all the best in all that you do

You've made a really good point that I'd like to address, Nekokun!

Each of us over time uses this site in the way that works for us as individuals. Whether we use just the tools and articles or require more contact with others for motivation and support, what counts is that we do what really is effective!

This class team has from Day One had the goal to be home-base for everyone who joined it...regardless of how each person uses other aspects of the site.

(My own site-use changes periodically! Note that I didn't participate in anything except use of tools and the diet stages for several months after joining! It was only after I'd completed the Stages that I began to connect with other people here.)

My feeling about site use, in a nutshell:
Tailor your time and energies here to suit your needs and be flexible enough to make changes when rekindling seems a good idea.

I'm here, although I'm not active on the boards much. I've hit some snags but I'm still trying to work through them. But mainly all I use this site is to track my exercises and my food at times. I should be taking advantage of the support here though. emoticon

One step at a time, remember that much and we shalt get by...

I'm still here. Had a few stumbles along the way, but those were lessons that I needed to learn in order to continue on my journey. The thing that has changed most for me is my activity level.
Thanks for checking in on us!

Carol/Sam (which do you prefer?), I like the idea of "looking forward" or "journey ahead" (instead of lamenting the past and living there with self pity.) Good idea!

SEEKING INPUT!

Ready?
I'm thinking of adding a word or phrase to our team name to update it. Have about 14-15 spaces available.

Examples?
- SP Class of October 5-11, 2008 - FORWARD-FOCUS
-... OUR JOURNEY

Ok, got your thinking cap on?

Suggestions?

We have a pretty good group here. I don't visit this team often, but maybe we should. We've all been here 10 months now! For me that is TERRIFIC. I usually last 2 days.

Like VanillaBear I had a hard time getting started. I had actually not been truthful about my starting weight and didn't want to reveal it. I actually got started about the end of May. I joined an exercise group three times a week and in June started to use the nutrition tracker as well. I lost a few pounds and was very motivated. Now I am in a plateau stage and it is getting harder. I know I should exercise more and perhaps stick to the lowest part of my calorie range but so far this hasn't happened. I am happy to hear from the team. Thanks for the motivation.

I'm here, I stopped for a long while, but in the beginning of July started back up with Spark again. I have been losing slowly but surely the last few weeks. Just trying to eat better and exercise! :)

No way to know how many are active on the site, since people drift into corners that suit them. But the team exists for anyone who wants to touch base. A few of our members from here have joined a newer class team I co-lead (May 31 - June 6) and several periodically send me SparkMails. Quite a few became team leaders, too.

What I find interesting is that I keep bumpting into people who joined the week I did! People who I didn't know were still on the site were quite active all along... just in different places, team-wise! SP probably could create a system for tallying activity and I'd love to see those numbers!
