Today is minus 30 pounds since I've been back. May they NEVER EVER RETURN again!!!! I'm getting to old, to keep losing those same pounds. They say with age comes wisdom, so God and I should be able to keep it off this time.

Jeanne, that is GREAT! The slower, the healthier the loss; and... slow loss means less chance of excess baggy skin! So to ME, your progress is sensible and ideal!

Just looking back over the last 5 years...I keep thinking I haven't accomplished much, but slow and steady has helped me lose 40 pounds in those years. Not a little thing, even if it happened gradually.

Yap, that's right, our upcoming flight to San Diego.

The end of Nov. our son will graduate from the Marine Coop. So I need to get this 20" bum in an 18" seat.

Say prayers for me.

Still here! Well...I haven't been on this site for a while but I'm still around.

I have to admit...I just reread my last post and I'm STILL in the same spot. I'm now thinking on WHY that is.

How are you doing? I'm interestd to see how others are doing and what has helped them have success.

Robin, you are exactly right!
It MUST come from within each of us.
This site, the tools, friends here and in real life (real life? what is that?) are all...tools. Assists.

Oh, they are more, yes, but in terms of our goals?
It is definitely something inside that will get us where we want to be.

A goal without action is like a wish or dream.
Goals cannot exist without action.
But words are easier than putting the thought into motion.
That's where the tools and other people come in handy.
When friends say "how can I help? what can I do?", it is really an invitation for you to include their efforts or expertise in your toolbox for goal attainment.

One reason I do blogs a lot is that while I'm expressing thoughts, people give me feedback and cheers. I need that feedback. Otherwise, it's so danged lonely because there is no one in my 'real' life who works as hard as I do with so few visible results.

To me, doing the best I can to be healthy, to eat in a healthy way - not just calorie count but also quality of nutrients injested! - is the focus. My limits in exercise due to disability issues (fibromyalgia, arthritis on spine) are a huge drawback for me in weightloss. People cannot SEE the improvements I've made, though my doctors reads numbers that reveal a great turnaround! Ok, not the ones on the dagnabbit scale, but the ones that really are important.

Over time I've come to realize that in my case, focus on those things is actually more important and also that the loss of pounds and inches will eventually catch up. As much as I'd LIKE them to catch up in tangible progress? Realistically, probably not. There's that exercise/metabolism issue again rearing its ugly head. Last year that realization really bothered me for a few months. But the fact remained that I am doing the best I can, being the best I can. And ... I'm comfortable with that even though I still reach for better-LOOKING results.

SP Diet Stage 3 - attacking our habits - is the biggie for me.

I know that many of our weight issues are sitting right there in old ingrained habits that we don't even realize are holding us back for the simple reason that they're such a part of our lifestyles that we haven't replaced them. So periodically I return to Stage 3 and re-analyze my ways of doing things again. It helps. But only because something inside of me says "OK, I've had enough; I'm going into attack mode on this issue!"

So. I'm here for my friends - you guys - whenever I can somehow say something, give an idea, or say Woo Hoo.

Please note:
If you blog something important to you, shoot me a SparkMail to read it, because I might miss it otherwise!

Thanks Carol.

I haven't given up. I don't feel that way. Even though...I've only ever lost 20-25lbs at a time, max. The thought has never left my mind, thought of being healthy or wanting to be healthier.

A friend who is a personal trainer and doing her masters on obesity issues always has asked me the same thing. What can I do? How can I help? She always says name it and I'll do it.

I really think that want has to come from somewhere deep within. That's my mindset right now anyway. What do you guys think?

What I did like about the "other" site...and perhaps it here someplace and I just haven't found it. I found myself cruising the "sucess stories" A LOT. Especially when I was having a "low" day. I found that looking at other peoples success and hearing their stories really really helped and was motivating.

I think back to what gave me sucess in the past. Was the community feel and outlet for sites like this. Seeing results no matter how small. And just FEELING healthier.

I am spread pretty thin these days. Work (although its not a stressful job), family, and I'm pursuing my degree part time. It leaves little time for all else...YET I do find myself sitting on the computer playing scrabble on FB, watching the odd episode of whatever is on TV.

I think its my mindset that I can't have a good workout without making it a big gym production.

I bought a heart rate monitor, wait, my husband bought me a heart rate monitor for my bday this year. I found myself doing whatever I could to burn up a few hundred calories to stay under calorie goal. I'd run up and down the stairs and I burned it up pretty quickly. I guess I need to remind myself...its not a MOUNTAIN. Babysteps will get me there.

Thank you for the continious support!

What counts is that you are both HERE.
What tools on the site would best help you??

I've been using the new "LiveMind" connection for a few months; there is a cost of $12.99 per month but it's cheaper than attending WW or other groups and has a focus that is based on issues rather than just some gimmicky way of counting points (I went to WW last year and just could not get the whole point system...). If you want to try it the first week is no charge I think. Every week there is a topic which is discussed at every "class". Some people go on their webcams, but we use microphones, listen to the "teacher" (a member who is a leader and uses a set plan that flexes with our input), and discuss whatever comes to mind. There is a running live chat-screen and at the end a downloadable 'take-home'. We can attend as many times during the week as we want/can. For me the personal connection is an asset. Thought I'd mention it if either of you think that doing this would add some umph to your efforts.

I am one of the leaders of the 55+ Females team, and find that leading helps me stay on track.

There's a good team that has lots of daily input that is worth considering. The Dany Lions team has a link from my SparkPage. I joined because a 'teacher' I like who is incredibly motivating (has lost over 100 pounds and transformed her life!) is one of the leaders. What is kewl there is that they have ongoing challenges that motivate. The team is made up of all age groups which has much merit too!

But if you gals want this team to be more active, just say the word. If you want to step up and be leaders, it can be re-shaped to help you achieve your goals. I keep the team active as a home base for everyone in case anyone wants to do that. Just say the word!

I'm still hanging in. I haven't been to this site in a while. I went away after getting virus attacks from the message boards. It was an unusual happening but I couldn't take the chance on my computers! Work and home. I gave it a bit of time. I was using another site that a few of my friends were on. Thinking of coming back here...I can't help but love the community feel.

I have to say. I haven't made much progress in terms of weight loss. Booo. But it never strays too too far from my mind.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY TO EVERYONE WHO IS STILL HERE!!!

------
Jeanne, since I'm the original tortoise, my visible progress is slow too. I've been here almost 4.5 years. But I've changed so much in my lifestyle that while the weight-loss is small, the actual change is immense!

When progress is slow I try to change things around. And a few months ago I heard of a then-pilot program that I now continue to do...because it's really helping me.... Have you heard of LiveMind? There's a recent blog about it with links; www.dailyspark.com/blog.asp?post=spa
rk
people_live_brings_the_support_meetiR>ng_to_you
.

Unlike everything here on SP's site, there IS a cost (of $12.99 per month), but I have been doing it instead of going to a weight group like WW or TOPS and find the support is in sync with what I do, is LIVE (microphone, cameras, and real-time chat box), and helping me. And it's the cheapest support group for me. It's run like a 'class' to provide structure and a topic, but members share whatever is topmost of concerns or woohoos. It's real-time SUPPORT. And unlike many messages, things we say are addressed, sometimes much more fully than if we leave messags in our teams. Worth a try if you want an extra boost!

So, we just passed our three-year Sparkaversity, and I wish I could say I have made more progress. It is a slow, slow process. I've made some good changes, but I have a way to go to be where I want to be.

Candy, that's great! I'm busy setting it up right now. In fact I'm using some of the basics I used when setting up this team; most people focus on the general discussion thread, but hopefully there will be some information for inspiration elsewhere!

Of Course!

This team continues to exist even for a year (more?) of no one even posting. I'll receive notices when items are posted but a new team usually occupies HOURS a day of personal SparkMails and postings on the team. So I might easily miss postings here.

I'm ALWAYS available by SparkMail, and will be checking that more than any of my teams in the coming month.

SUGGESTION:
Anyone who wants to jump-start his/her journey can join the new team. I go through the Stages anew each time I lead a class team (this is my 3rd). What's interesting is that I grow from the contact with new people whose focus is learning the site, because I get ideas for myself from them!

If you join the team let me know ok?

Hey! Wow! The sun is out (I almost forgot what it looked like) and weatherman says it should be mostly sunny all weekend. I can hardly wait to visit the good weather outside my house!

Hope you all have a sunny, warm and productive weekend.

A great week, thanks for asking.

I'm excited because the granddaughter are spending the weekend with us. They are growing up so fast. Emma will be 5 this month and Allie will be a year old in June. We pick them up after Emma's T-ball game this afternoon. I hope you all have a great weekend.

Hi Candy! Happy Mothers Day to you too!
I'm enjoying reading your daily quotes with comments in your blog! Though I don't often have time to reply, they are wonderful food for thought; thank you for keeping them up this way. 102?!!! wow, that is commitment!!

Hi Phyllis! I'm having a good week. :) How about you??

Went to a TOPS meeting tonight and Spread the Spark by talking to the group about how SP can help them stay in touch when they miss meetings, and more: I've created a private team for them to use just for members of that chapter of TOPS. I hope they use the team, because combining SP with an in-person meeting would be fantastic! Here's hoping!

I'll be leading another class team soon: the SP Class Team of May 31 - June 6, 2009. I'd made a pledge to myself to lead one class team a year. Watching new members discover how the site can empower them energizes and motivates ME. So while the class team leaders only 'commit' to 30 days, I consider class teams open and active as long as anyone wants to be there.

So. Today I spread the Spark. And kept my pedometer on as I continued to focus on walking to increase my step-count to be closer to what it NEEDS to reach! It all adds up to positive feelings!

It has rained pretty much every day for a month here. I think I need to just ignore it, get some rain gear and return to my walking! My dogs hate the rain, but they like walking more.

Grandma Sam good for you that is a good number for anyone. Since I can't walk outside by my self I can walk all I want to in the house and that is fun to do for me. Staying on my feet is helping my ankle to not hurt so bad when it rains or gets cold.

Candy, I'm so impressed with your walking!! Funny how we each are in different places, have different goals and yet... when I read your step counts I feel like cheering for you even though I grin in joy at my numbers today... which are about 1/3 your step-count! (Hey, I'm over 5,000 steps today!)

Grandma Sam Yes, when I started wearing it I was walking at 10,000 steps. I had been walking for several months when I started wearing it. I think you are right I was probably walked between 5,000 and 10,000 steps.

Candy have you noticed that over the months here you understand things differently? Like diet advice you probably knew by heart for years... suddenly has significance in a different way? That happened to me. I really think that WORKING through those Diet Stages is what did the trick for me: instead of just knowing facts, I was absorbing them and their lessons became part of my way of thinking.

GrandmaSam One of the girls in group this morning said she was quitting smoking. The leader asked what she was replaced that habit with, when you stop a habit you need to replace it with something. Grandma Sam you are so right we need to be aware of what we eat and and what exercises we are doing.

Jeanne229, I think many people start, then take a break, start again...and repeat the cycle til READY. It's like warming up before a marathon when we do that! Each time we stretch ourselves a little more, become more prepared for the real thing.

Patience and preservence really are important keys in lifestyle change. Ok, we may not always be STEADY in doing what we must, but... being nice to ourselves and forgiving may have more value in some ways.

Setting tiny lifestyle change goals was important to me along the way; I found that it took a lot of focus for 'little' changes, giving each full concentration and lots of time. There's something very empowering about developing good habits! I don't mean doing things from time to time, but actually making them HABITS.

AWARENESS seems to be crucial for me. Awareness of what I eat. Awareness of physical activity. So logging it all has helped a lot! Are you measuring foods, logging food and exercise...and then analyzing them? Consider it a self-challenge and you may find a drive to stay on track but have a fine time doing it.

19,000! WOW, I'm impressed! Wish I could have used one of the other pedometers but they don't work for me because I have to walk lightly for low impact...and the ones I've had before just don't detect the steps.

My new ped was a reward I gave myself for a collection of huge lifestyle changes that are firmly secure. My first REAL reward other than a few CDs.

Grandma Sam the last time I did the montly shopping I went from one side of the store to the other side and back again twice. I walked just over 19,000 steps that day. I have a ped that works, it doesn't do steps and miles at the same time. I walked about 9 miles that day, my legs and feet knew it also. I put my ped on first thing in the morning and don't take it off until I go to bed. When I come to something on my SPARKS account that I need the number I write down that number and than zero it out, and start all over again. I have several other tricks that I use also. If you want them I will tell them to you.

Is anyone using a pedometer? I want to share my elation over mine!!

I bought a new one which arrived last weekend; in fact, I even blogged about it! Since I don't do much walking this purchase was to help me increase my steps. Though there are already 4 under-$10 pedometers in my dresser, not ONE of them counted as many as half my steps, so I sprang for one that was well recommended in various places: an OMRON 720 something. It measures my steps and so much more. LOVE IT!

If you feel you aren't getting enough activity, do consider wearing a pedometer and logging your daily steps. It is an incredible motivator!
emoticon
I also joined a local TOPS because I decided I'm finally ready (!) to not only do increase exercise (hence the pedometer purchase!), but also to commit to weekly weigh-ins.

For two years my focus has NOT been weight despite being quite overweight. My focus was changing what I ate, increasing my daily calories to a consistent level and making other changes in health. Now I'm very comfortable with these things, and can focus less on 'health' and more on becoming more active in my daily life (walking)...and losing weight.

Welcome back, Ameena!

Best approach is to start back at the Fast Break and get yourself back in the pace! Log food and exercise!

The advantage of being away and then redoing it is that you start with understanding already there in your memory bank; what you re-read or re-do will fortify what you already know...in a very positive way!

Glad to see you back, my friend!

It has been AGES since I've really gone through Sparkpeople.I've been in serious denial these past months and need to desperately get back on track.

I've really missed all of you. I've ended up isolating myself, not only from this community in Sparkpeople but from other friends and family.

Keeping my fingers crossed.

First, I just want to say, yes, I'm also very happy March is over. It was just a blah month for me. But I love April and Easter time emoticon Plus, the Hannah Montana movie comes out next Friday so why shouldn't everyone in the world love April emoticon

Anyways, for those wondering or even remember, I found out the cause for my brown out/gray out. As I suspected, it was due to hyperventilating. I didn't know this at the time, but I guess my bike tire was losing air which was causing me to pedal harder than normal. So now, if I want to bike ride again, I have to get the old one fixed or a new one.

Okay, so just thought I'd also say, I've decided to start over from scratch. I know a lot of us have said we're starting over before including myself a few times, but this time I'm determined it's different. I've been doing a lot of little steps this past month in order to prepare myself before jumping into SP full force again, and I've decided I'm going to restart on Palm Sunday. I'm thinking I'm going to go back to stage 1 and reset my streaks as well, because I don't think a lot of the stuff stuck and I really need a new fast break.

Now, I *would* start tomorrow, but I'm going to a huge Christian youth convention all day, so probably not the best day to start something like that. BUT...on the brightside, I'm looking forward to some spiritual revitilization to help me in this process because I personally believe I can't do anything physical without first having spiritual strength and wisdom to help me maintain willpower.

DailyDaughter,

Being scared was a healthy reaction. Grey-outs are not the norm.Were you biking long? Riding hard? Did you suddenly start exercising (biking) more than a normal level of exertion when you took the bikeride today?

Be safe about this: find out why this happened to you. My thought: play it safe: have a doctor check you out and ask for specific advice about how to avoid a recurrence.

Turn those worried thoughts into action and let us know how it goes. The doctor may look at your sugar. It might just be that you overdid things and were overheated, possibly even unhydrated. But heed the warning your body gave you.

Keep us posted, k?

So, today I went riding my bike with my sister and when I got back to my house and got off. I was standing for a moment, after adjusting the kickstand and suddenly I suffered a horrible grey-out. I lost sight completely for about a minute, felt like I was going to throw up, almost fell over, and my ears were ringing. My sister helped me sit down in our driveway and got me some water. Well, I seemed fine, but then when I got up again and went into the house, the brown and blue hues that associate grey-outs (or brownouts) returned and I felt nautious again until I sat down. It was very terrifying and only the second time something like this has happened to me. Both times were due to hyperventillation because of overexertion. The previous time was in high school when we were forced to run a mile to pass gym class. Anyways, I still feel like my equilibrium is out of whack and my stomach's still cramping. Pretty much I feel like I suddenly have the flu or something. But yeah, it was definitely a wake up call that if something as simple as riding a bike (which I used to do all the time) is going to cause something like this, I really need to reevaluate my life. For example, am I eating the right foods that will fuel me to do something active? I can honestly say what I ate for lunch today wasn't the best pre-activity meal.

Anyways, I'm still kind of jittery from the experience so I just had to try and take my mind off of it even if by talking about it, lol. But talking helps me feel better. I probably should get to sleep, but again, I'm so jittery, I'm having a hard time. And my achy muscles aren't helping at all.

I'm just like everybody else, only different.

The funeral was today, DARLING MOTHER fought a war with my sister's so she could run the show with the Bible verses and songs. The songs were ones that Dad would have liked, the Bible verses were just the opposite of what Dad would have wanted. He taught us girls the Lords Prayer, Psalm 23, John 3:16, he also was a very good story teller. He loved to put his own spin on the stories like The Creation Story, Noah's Ark, Jesus' Birth, The Parbels, and when we were old enough to here it The Death Of Jesus. Their were other stories from the Bible that he told, she fought a war to get the Tower of Bable story as his favoirte, he never told us that story nor did he tell that story to his grandkids or greatgrandkids. My sister where Dad was living told about the last six weeks of Dad's life and how proud he was of each one of us. Than one of Dad's nurses from the dialysis center told us all that he talked about us girls, our kids and grandkids and how proud he was of each of us. Neither one of them mentioned DARLING MOTHER. She did behave herself and did not ruin the funeral for any of us.

Wanted to point out three articles for anyone facing challenges or lack of motivation right now, since several people have indicated they're Fighting a Battle:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1.
“25 Ways to Get Back on Track Today
Don't Give Up on Your Goals!”
-- By Nicole Nichols, Fitness Instructor & Health Educator
www.sparkpeople.com/resource/motivat
io
n_articles.asp?id=1062
If ever you hit a snag this is one of a few articles I recommend. It gives on-target suggestions for people who have hit a snag in their plans or who went completely off-track. Step by step!
CHANGE?:
While re-reading the article I decided it's time to redo my motivational collage.
emoticon
2.
“Stop Dieting and Start Living!
Have You Made the Change?”
By Dean Anderson, Behavioral Psychology Expert
www.sparkpeople.com/resource/motivat
io
n_articles.asp?id=620
This article is the very essence of what makes SparkPeople.com unique: the focus on changing lifestyle is a more winning thought process than “going on a diet”… and will get us where we want to BE instead of just giving us a way to temporarily lose some poundage. For me this is a tricky issue! You see, I HAVE to think about the numbers…and a “diet mentality” puts focus on numbers… so trying to balance that need with the “Start Living” advice is tricky.
CHANGE?:
I must continue to watch my numbers, but will continue developing a lifestyle which emphases food as enjoyable and fun. ENJOYING good nutrition and exercise is the key to this change for me.
emoticon emoticon
3.
Healthy Carb, Fat and Protein Ranges
The Numbers You Need to Know
By Becky Hand, Licensed & Registered Dietitian
www.sparkpeople.com/resource/nutriti
on
_articles.asp?id=372
I chose this article because it SEEMS to be in opposition to the one above! Ok, we don't want life to BE numbers. HOWEVER! Balance of nutrients is crucial. This article does exactly what its title claims: specifies percentages of carbs, fats and proteins for healthy nutrition plans. I marked this as a favorite a long time ago: it sums up very neatly what my RD and I have been working on since March, 2007. In fact, SP’s balance of carbs/Fats/Proteins is what she recommends to clients in general, though she tailors the ranges based on individual needs. I look at the article once in a while…especially when my balance is off-kilter. What do I get out of it? The importance of balance. And that goes beyond this to nutrients not covered in the article.
The recommendationed ranges are:
1. carbs: 45% to 65% of (your daily) calories
2. fats: 20% to 35% of calories
3. protein: 10% to 35% of calories
CHANGE?:
I will continue to try to achieve the balance needed. An ongoing struggle.
Just realized that I'd responded to Candy elsewhere but not here...
Time seems to fly and stand still - simultaneously! - at such times. Your grief is compounded by the strong feeling about your mom's behavior, so ... let yourself heal. Take time for YOU. And yes, we're here for you!
