Good question! That would depend upon your goals, really. If you are trying to lose weight, cardio would be the most important. If you are trying to gain muscle, strength would be the best option. A good option would be circuit training - have you tried that? That is where you alternate short bursts of cardio with weights, so that you keep your heart rate elevated (and get the benefits of cardio) and get strength training as well. Hope this helps!

I have a question. If I only have half an hour to work out should I do weight training or cardio?

I also have that problem after I work out and do a lot of cardio. I plan my cardio so that can eat afterward and solve the hunger pangs.

RainShine - I get that when I work out at night, after dinner. When I work out in the morning, I make sure to eat a high protein/fiber breakfast, and it isnt a problem. Are you eating lots of protein after you work out? Maybe a snack right after you are finished with cardio would help.

I have to be really careful when I am running, because I will eat more calories than I just burned by running!

emoticon ILVCMP - I dunno about the weight thing, but I do know that I have lost 6.5 inches from *just* my waist and hips in the last 3 months and I've only dropped 2 measley pounds! I've gone down a size in pants and everything... so the muscle must weigh significantly more. I'm just glad I started measuring or I would've quit a long time ago thinking it wasn't working! (Oh geez - just saw that that post was like 3 months old...! Sorry!)

emoticon My question - Every time I do a cardio workout, I end up hungry ALL day for the rest of the day, and *nothing* satisfies it! Does anyone else experience this? Does my body really need the extra calories or should I do my best to ignore it? I can ignore normal hunger for a while, but ALL DAY?!?

Hi LVCMP. I've had that same thing happen to me. I find that it usually goes back down and even loose more. Its usually water weight from high sodium or meds. Sodium makes you retain water so you should see if your taking in high amounts. Hope that helps some.

I am feeling frustrated. I hit roadblock this week. I gain 3.8 lbs back and stayed within my calorie range. I also exceeded my exercise goals. I know that muscle weighs more than fat but I am not sure about this much. I know I lost an inch at the waist and I am thankful for that. Has anyone else experienced this? If you did experience this did the weight come off the following week? Did you have to adjust anything with your plan?

I battled this as a kid and currently with my boyfriend. He picks fights with me when I don't eat everything on my plate but I stand my ground. I tell him that I don't have to eat everything on my plate because I'm full.

You do notice that once you slowly integrate smaller portions into your lifestyle that your stomach does start to shrink.

I too was a member of the clean plates club. I have fought with that forever. I realize now that my parents meant well. They didn't realize that it was harmful, they wanted me to have the correct nutrients. I will not forget that as it is part of my upbringing. I want you all to know that after leaving my parents house I went the opposite direction. I ate barely enough to survive and guess what I gained weight, yea imagine that. The body is an amazing thing. I have increased my caloric intake by about 2x times the amount and I am losing weight. Why am I saying this? I believe each of us in different but if we follow the prescribed path we can be successful. I would have never guessed that by eating more I would lose weight. Yes, I am realistic and I know this will change but right now I am celebrating that I am losing. I want everyone to be successful. Believe that you can be!

Controlling food portions and what you put in your mouth is a big part of this lifestyle change. If you eat smaller controlled portions and stay within your calorie range, your stomach will eventually start to shrink as you lose weight. Being a member of "the clean plate club" myself I totally understand how hard it is to break that habit. Just make it a point to remind yourself to stop eating when you feel full! Eventually it will become a habit ;) Best of luck!

Does anyone know if your stomach truly shrinks when you eat smaller food portions? This is something I've heard over the years and am wondering if it's true or not. I used to be a 3-meal-a-day eater, and a member of the 'clean plate' club. I'm now trying very hard to eat smaller portions, and to stop eating when I feel full. I grew up in a large family (10 kids) and you didn't leave the dinner table until your plate was clean. I've been battling this habit for YEARS.

thank you for sharing and it is a good thing to express. there is no one diet fits all and there is no one healthy lifestyle fits all. some are here to lose and some are here to stregthen and maintain. the calorie versus exercise mix is a learning ratio we have to decide on with this and our doctors.

I was reading this thread and wanted to respond****What I'm going to say does not apply to all**
My trainer told me NOT to increase my calories just because I was working out more. You guys can look and see how much I eat and how much I work out. The reason was that sparkpeople would have put my calorie intake up to 2000 and she said there is no way that I need to eat that much, yet until I get my workout schedual under control and portions! **************** PLEASE REMEMBER************* THIS IS NOT WHAT EVERYONE SHOULD DO****************** I just wanted to share

LEALEABABY08,
I am in the same situation at work. Some of my favorite lunches include a peanut butter and jelly sandwich(smuckers sugar-free jelly is really good), yogurt, and a fruit. I have also done several meals with deli turkey and low-fat cheese wrapped in romaine lettuce, or in a sandwich with lettuce and mustard. Baby carrots, grapes, and raisins are good snack options.

BUCKEYEMAMA-
I did a google on List of Food with HIGH CARBS and looked up the calories per serving...

1/2 cup of All-Bran cereal has 78 calories, 22 carbs then add milk unless you eat it dry. Also boasts 8.8 grams of fiber!!

Quaker Instant Weight Control Oatmeal-Cinnamon and Brown Sugar has 160 calories, 29 carbs, 6 grams of fiber, and 7 grams of protein!

Uncle Ben's Instant whole grain Brown Rice has 110 calories, 36 carbs, 2 grams of fiber, and 4 grams of protein.

1 Cup of Blackeyed Peas has 160 calories, 34 carbs, 8 grams of fiber, and 5 grams of protein.

Hope that helps some...

I also eat Total Cinnamon Crunch cereal, it satisfies a sweet tooth, with 190 calories (without milk), 40 carbs, 4 grams of fiber, and 4 grams of protein. It also has 100% of daily vitamins and minerals such as Vitamins B-6 AND B-12, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Calcium, Iron, etc... it has atleast 25% of most vitamins on the side of the boxes!

I have a question. How do we get Spark friends on our page? Do they choose us or do we choose them? If you find someone who has some of the same interests or issues, do you just choose to add them to your page or ask permission first? My page seems so lonely so far and I have found so many people I enjoy that I would love to add, but my insecurities get in the way.

Good Morning Everyone! I have a question about carbs...I've been looking over my meals since the 11th and I never come anywhere close to my "low end" allowance for carbs. I need ideas that won't necessarily bump my calorie intake way up. This is what I consider to be a conundrum...carbs with no calories? Help?!

Hey Leslie - my favorite is light popcorn, but that requires a microwave. Granola bars are good, too, but a lot of them have a lot of junk (like HFCS) in them. Dried fruit and pretzels are good ideas, too. Good luck!

I usually do a salad of some type and a wrap. For example, a typical lunch is 2-3 cups of mixed salad greens, light raspberry vinagrette, and 1 T of bleu or feta cheese. I use Flat Out wraps (low in carbs, really tasty, come in whole wheat varieties too) with tuna, light cheese, and a little mayo. Then usually a piece of fruit.

I find light string cheese to be a great snack-plus it has protein. Also, I eat Wasa Rye Fiber crackers (60 calories and lots of fiber for two huge crackers) and Laughing Cow cheese triangles. Its tastes awesome, plus I get my cheese and crackers fix.

Hope that helps!

Well you can do strength training every day BUT you have to do lower body one day, upper body the next, so -- as everyone has said -- the muscles have plenty of time to heal. Never do full body day after day.

I have a bowflex and usually just do it 3 X a week. But when I get in a rut I may do 6 days of shorter routines, for a couple of weeks, just to change it up, alternating upper and lower.

Shrty - you don't want to do strength training every day, as your muscles need more than 24 hours to recover. The way muscle is built is by making tiny tears in the muscle fiber, and the muscle grows as those heal. If you do ST every day, your muscles can never heal correctly.

I had the same problem. The program wanted me to eat way more than I had been averaging so I wasn't hungry either. I have found in the first week this is a challenge but I believe it is all about restarting your metabolism and eating the right foods in the correct proportions. As we lose weight we will re-adjust so that the caloric intake will continue to be on track. Good luck, I am right there with you.

I have a quick question. I just joined last week and have been doing everything like I'm supposed to. Exercising three times a week and keeping track of my calories. I noticed that I really don't eat as many calories in a day as they say I should. I'm over 1200 usually but to be honest I'm just not that hungry lol. Is that normal? Also I weighed myself today as its been almost a week. I lost 6 pounds!emoticon Is that normal as well? Thanks for replies in advance. emoticon

Hi Solider you should only do the strength exercises every second day to allow your muscles to heal before doing them again I am not sure that anything bad would happen if you continue to do them everyday however you may feel more pain and that could result in you not wanting to do them great job keeping on track as for the exercise and the calories the more you exercise the higher your calorie intake will be so that your body does not go into starvation mode so if you chanegd you cardio you will probably notice that your calories will go up however as you lose weight you should see a decrease in your calories as the heavier we are the more calories our body will use when doing cardio hope this will help you out

As for the protein snacks sorry I have the smae problem so not much help on that one

Thanks for the thoughts about calories. I agree that the cooking all the time is a stretch for me as well. I am working on how to modify the menus just a bit within the guidelines to make things a bit easier with my schedule.

I want to find some high protein low calorie "SNACKS" sometimes near the end of the day is the only time I can get my nutrition logged in and find that I'm way low on my protein but only have a few calories left. What can I pick up to have around in those times?

I will lose this awful weight, just watch and you'll see.

I know that this question has already been asked but I still am not understanding it, and it just happened to me today. When I put in my spinning for cardio a little red message popped up and said that I was getting way to much exercise or something like that so it said that I could fix it by clicking on the red HERE ( I want to keep exercising the same amount). I clicked on it and it let me change my workout so that I have cardio scheduled everyday now, is there anything else that I need to do? I keep hearing about people's calories changing and I dont know if I should look out for this or if they will stay the same. Also another question I had was what happens if you do strength training everyday? I have been doing it everyday since I started but I keep seeing the warning that you should only doing it like every other day so I changed it. What is the best plan for this? If someone could please answer these two questions I would greatly appreciate it.emoticon

thank you Sarah. i am putting all my trust into spark. i have seen what it can do and i know it will do well for me.

yes ilvcmp, i have lots of trouble meeting the goals. what i did was click on show meal plans and got some ideas from there. i dont have the inclination to prepare the meals as shown (also dont like alot of the food) but it gives me great ideas. i have also tried to eat a very very big breakfast and that seems to be helping.
there was a discussion on another board about eating times and i recall a discussion with my doctor. i believe i was told to try not to eat an hour and a half before you sleep. this had nothing really to do with slowing metabolism or whatever, but more with letting your body have time to digest or something like that. sorry i cant be more help.

Does anyone else have trouble eating enough calories? I find that I am having trouble forcing myself to eat enough. I found that prior to this program I was averaging 800 - 850 calories a day. I know not enough but time was a factor and still is but I am forcing myself to make time. This leads to the next question. I teach full time and coach and often don't get home before between 7 - 8pm. Is following the meal recommendations still reasonable at this time at night. I have heard that that later you eat the more difficult it is for the body digest the food. Just looking for input. Thanks.

Theoretically, you could eat very little and exercise a lot and lose more weight, BUT, not for very long. Its hard on your body, not a lifestyle many people could maintain for very long, and it could put your body into a plateau and you would end up burning muscle for energy rather than fat. Who wants that?

Basically, the moral of the story is, just trust Spark! :)

somehow i knew there would be math involved *LOL*

thanks you SHE and Sarah. i think i have the jist of it. the part i have not seen is the change after a weight loss as i have not lost anything, so i guess that is where i find my confusion.

if i hear both of you correctly...i get to burn more and eat more cause i weigh more. when i lose some weight the calorie intake will change.

so then i should be able to eat less and do all this crazy exercise and i will lose more then a pound a week? i know this isnt healthy and i am not going to do it, i am just trying to understand...

i will tell you one thing..thank goodness for spark cause i could never figure all these calculations out on my own *LOL*

That is correct - the heavier you are, the more calories your body needs to burn just to stay alive.

Also, the reason your calorie intake should go up (slightly) as your amount of exercise goes up has to do with daily deficits. Your goal is to have a deficit each day of XX amount of calories. To lose one pound means a deficit of 3500 calories. If you have a deficit of 500 calories per day (meaning you burn 500 more than you take in), then in one week you will have lost one pound. For a pound and a half per week, a daily deficit of 750 is needed. Even though this idea operates on a 24 hour per day schedule, our bodies dont. So, if you have a deficit of 500 today, and 1000 tomorrow, it will even out to 750 per day. So, as you start exercising more, that daily deficit builds, and if it gets too high, it can cause the dreaded plateau.

Its all about keeping a balance between calories burned (both through exercise and your BMR, basal metabolic rate, which is the calories your body burns to pump your heart, breathe, digest food, etc) and the calories you eat. THere are calculators to determine your BMR, but, when you input your data into Spark, it figures all that for you. This is part of what they use to give you the daily calorie range.

Phew - long winded message! Hopefully this didn't confuse you more. If it doesnt make sense let me know! I have read SO much on this topic, and I understand it can be really confusing.

Thanks for the help !!!!! I have the same problem with my calories going up each time i go over the amount of calories i need to burn it gets very fustrating and every website i have looked at tells me something different here is on piece of info i found not sure if this will help you out or not

This confuses a lot of people but in fact, the heavier you are, the more calories you can have each day while still losing weight.

Let me explain. That extra 2 stone you’re carrying is actually equivalent in weight to 28 packets of butter. Now imagine carrying those packets of butter around with you everywhere you go – up and down the stairs, to the local shops, in and out of the car, into the kitchen to make a cup of tea. Hopefully, you can see it takes a lot more energy simply to move around when you’re carrying all that extra weight.

As a consequence, because you are heavier than your friend, you need more calories in a day to keep your weight steady. In turn, this means you will lose weight on a slightly higher calorie allowance. However, as your weight drops, you’re calorie allowance will also drop slightly as you’ll have less weight to carry around. This is why you should regularly update your Goals and Results.

You can find out how many calories you need a day to lose, gain or maintain weight with the tools in Weight Loss Resources. You can keep online food and exercise diaries, and look up how many calories in over 20,000 basic and branded foods. Try it free for 24 hours.

okay. i am having a hard time wrapping my head around this.
let me start by saying i am forgetful (horribly medically forgetful. daughter calls me dora *L*) so this is the one thing i love about spark is that i am here daily to be reminded of what i need to do and what i have done. after about 10 days i have increased my exercising at the pool to 90 mins a day and weight training 3X a week.
the trouble is that i have had to increase my calories again so that i do not enter said "starvation mode" but...BUT! if i keep increasing my calories to "match" my exercise how on earth am i ever going to lose weight?
exercise some and calories are this
exercise more and calories have to be higher
ARGH i cant wrap my head around it even though the answer is in there and will make perfect sense.

if anyone out there has patience and can explain this vicious cycle to me i would greatly appreciate it!

I always eat before, but mainly because I have low blood sugar in the mornings. I have passed out in the shower before, from waiting too long to eat!

But, that aside, it is best to eat before, and to eat a small snack one hour after, especially after a very hard workout, to fuel your muscles. My mom always said you should eat after working out, because then your body burns fat as fuel rather than whats in your stomach. Sorry, mom, but thats totally wrong! A calorie is a calorie, and getting rid of one is a good thing no matter what!

from the net- Eatging before

-fuels your muscles (both with food eaten in the days before as well as the hour or two before)
-helps settle your stomach and avoid hunger
-helps prevent low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) — symptoms can include dizziness, nausea, and headaches
-fortifies your mental state by knowing that your body is fueled

eating afterwards-

if you are a competitive athlete, what you eat after a workout is just as important as what you eat leading up to a workout, because your body needs to recover and replace glycogen stores in time for the next workout. If you are a recreational exerciser and work out 2 - 3 times per week, you need not worry as much about post-exercise foods because your body will have enough time between workouts to recover. It's common not to want to eat after exercise, because you may not feel hungry and/or don't have time. Learning to eat right after a workout, though, has benefits.

i eat after exercising and i only do this because i am FAMISHED afterwards! even if i eat dinner then work out (or breakfast) i am still hungry afterwards. so for me, even if it is better to eat before, i will wait till after or i will be eating twice.

and thats all i have to say about that! *L*

JENNIFER, take your time, learn your goals and perfect your ideas. preparing your brain and taking your time is key to learning what you can and can not do right away. walking is so healthy and you have a great aim for your steps. the strength training is wonderful and dont forget to check out the videos for this on sparkpeople. i love them especially at work.

drat this desk job!

Thanks for the advice on the steps. It makes sense. My pedometer does track "aerobic steps" (a faster pace or a long period of walking in a row)--I just need to figure out how that translates into cardio minutes.

I'm still going to aim for 10,000 steps a day, but I'll only enter the aerobic steps into the cardio counter.

I also do strength training twice a week and at least one high intensity cardio (class or DVD). I'll hopefully add more, but I need to get used to this schedule first.

GRANDMAJUDY, i have been stuffed for a week now! i am not an eater and felt that i was okay with that. but after being here i have learned the evils of "starvation mode" i perused others meal plans and was shocked to see how many items are in their daily nutrition tackers! they are eating incredible amounts of food and are losing weight! i have yet to reach a day where i take in the required amount but have added a goal to do so. just to add another 100 a day till i get it right.

i have also learned from reading about others, that having a few cookies at the end of the day to increase calories is a no no *sigh*

have a great day!

i agree jaudon. i walk around at work too but the way i see it, is if i do it daily with no exertion then it matters not. i was doing this before and did not lose weight so it wont help me now. we burn calories sleeping and even sitting here and typing. i calculate only what i do above and beyond my normal routine that gets my heart rate elevated for an extended period of time.

excellent questions people!

There is a way to track steps in the 'other goals' section. I am not sure exactly where it is, but if you explore you will find it.

What kind of steps are you taking? Is this just walking around at work, or going for a 3 mile walk? Not all steps count as cardio. If I walk back and forth to the bathroom at work 5 times a day, I am not working up a sweat or increasing my heart rate, but will probably end up getting 600+ steps in. So maybe instead of counting all your steps into your cardio, just track how long you did actual cardio (fast walk, gym, etc). That would give you a much more accurate depiction of your cardio for the day. Good luck!

Hi GrandmaJudy
With the SP calorie and exercise trackers, you want to make sure you find the right balance. If you told SP when you set it up that you were exercising 45 mins a day, 6 days a week, it will recommend more calories for you. So, first, I would make sure that what you have there is actually true.

Also, the suggestion about smaller meals is great - this helps regulate hunger and insulin and whole lot of other stuff.

But, if you are doing the above and still feel stuffed - dont eat as much! Everyone is different, and going under by a few calories isnt that bad. Just dont make it a significant amount for a long time. Good luck!

I'm getting the same message that others are receiving about not having enough calories to match my workouts, but I think it's because I'm not sure if I'm entering my exercise in correctly.

I use a pedometer and to track how many steps/miles/calories burned each day. How do I enter that into myFitness using SP's technology?

I had been taking the number of miles I walk each day (according to the pedometer) and then multiplying that by 21 (since I think I walk at about a pace of 3mph), so it looks like I'm doing cardio for around 70 minutes a day, but I'm not sure if that's right.

If that is right, how many more calories should add to my day and why? I don't feel like I'm in starvation mode at all.

Have you started exercising to your SP suggested amount yet?

And think about the difference between eating a normal number of GOOD calories a day vs. not all that many and then going way overboard on desserts or snacks or whatever is our downfall.

But take it one day at a time, exercise, see what works for you best.

Hi, Like everybody else I'm new here. I wanted to ask a question that is probably going to sound lame but I don't care. I've been doing my nutrition tracker and using it to plan my meals, now I'm walking around feeling so stuffed. I'm eating healthier now, but it is also a lot more food than what I was eating, I'm not sure that I can meet the daily caloric goal. Any advice?

It is a topic that stays at the top of the list - so often where the moderators/teams leaders post information or where our monthly chat or goals are. Every time someone creates a new topic it goes at the top of the list and the old ones eventually get pushed off. If it is a Sticky, it stays at the top, can't get lost.

Hello Team,
Would somebody please let me know how I can attach that cute little slider of weight already lost (or wanting to loose) to the bottom of my posts?

Since this is for questions, I figured I start here

Thank you
Margit

I have never seen fast food (other than Subway) advertised on Spark. But, hey, they have to make money from advertising, in order to keep Spark free. Thats a compromise I am certainly willing to make!!

speaking of MacDonalds and junk food. why is there a large hamburger from MacDonalds splashing on my screen as an advertisement. one would think sparkpeople would be a little more picky

Thanks Sarah. I'll give that a try. I know it shouldn't, but for some reason looking at all that junk makes me crazy!!!

Hey Nancy - I had that same question a long time ago - it drove me nuts!

I figured out that you have to search first (say, type in 'burger), get the results, then click 'dont show fast food', and search again. Its annoying, but then at least you dont have to search through all the other stuff!

Question: I always check the box that says don't show fast food on my tracker. But it still shows Macdonald's etc. Not a big deal, but you have to search through all that junk to find what you are looking for sometimes.

So if MacDonald's ISN"T fast food, what is LOL!

MARNIE, questions are good and people love to answer and help. and sometimes one asks a question we all wanted to but didnt know how to word.

with putting them all in one place, it makes it easier as JAUDON mentioned.

come out of hiding and feel free to ask!

No, Marniebwarren, we love questions!!! I just wanted other people to be able to follow them, find them, and not get overwhelmed with email notifications.

Ask away!! :)

Perhaps I should have specified 'questions related to Spark'! :)

But, its simple - buy a new (round) peg!

Hi everyone!
Rather than everyone posting a separate thread for each question they have, lets start posting them all on here. That way, other people can review this and have their questions answered as well.

So, start asking!! :)
