It was very uncommon for me to walk and hike over 9 miles, and very unplanned. I just recently started to walk/hike/run any distance, and the most I had done before is just over 3 miles, or just over 5K, So I was totally shocked when my watch showed that I had gone over 9 miles yesterday. I didn't even set it to record right away, as I forget a lot of the time to set it to do that. So I don't know how much more that I did other than the over 9 that it showed when I went to take the watch off later that evening before taking a shower that evening. Well I wish you all the best always.

Hi Group -- Had lots of plans for today, but it is so muggy outside it is getting me sluggish. Walked Jeffery last evening and then my right hip "gave out" -- it is a bit better today. Can't believe that tomorrow is the first of August -- look for the "Cafe" to move to that site. Sorry to hear about your work problems and headaches, Mary Alice. I took a 4 hour First Aid course yesterday and it is amazing how many things have changed since I last took such a class. It was a fun class because the EMT teaching it was a funny guy and kept us going. When I get a chance, I will try to let you know some of the recommendations for common injuries, such as burns, sprains, etc. I am in awe of people who can walk/hike over 9 miles at one outing -- I am lucky to do even one mile. My weight just won't budge, so you know that I am eating more than I am exercising. Did get some fresh peaches and tomatoes at the Farmer's market this morning. Take care of those pooches and be kind to yourselves!

Diversity, you see, must not end up being some kind of feel good slogan, a word we keep in our back pocket to make us feel like we’re broad minded. Diversity is a gift. But it cannot be a gift…unless it is received

Good morning, I go in early today, noon. Yesterday I got the exercise I won on a wheel spin, so I'll look at that this morning. It is Coach Nicole so I'm sure there something I can do, she normally,

Yesterday My headache got so bad I almost called in. I took a nap and felt well enough to go in, then got worse as the night went on, It didn't help that I didn't get my first brake and my lunch was late. but then the closer came in at 6:30. He is a bundle of energy and turns everything into a joke. Hard to believe he is older then I am and retired army. Sometimes he can drive me nuts, but last night it must have been just what I needed because I started feeling better right away. He also was a there so I could take my brake and lunch and food helped.

Morning, I spoke to Mom yesterday and she wasn't doing much of anything because she couldn't stay out of the bathroom. DD called this morning and said she called the Dr about her 1 year old, he kept filling his dippers. I am so stopped up I have a headache.

Good Morning Group! It was a busy week-end, so I didn't spend much time on the computer. Saturday I took a class at a Catholic church in order to be able to volunteer in my granddaughter's school -- it was about child abuse and being able to identify people who abuse children. Yesterday was Sunday School and church. Went shopping in the afternoon to help a friend of mine get school supplies for a small school on the border of the two rural counties that are so poor. Up early today to get my walk in with the dog before the heat/humidity gets too bad. It is so beautiful here int he mornings -- we live on a huge plantation that was once a sheep raising area and rice fields. There are huge oaks with the Spanish moss hanging down, lush green fields that go for miles, a pond that is stocked with fish (saw one that was near the edge this morning that had to be over a foot long), wooded areas that have deer and other wildlife, big homes that fit the landscape (our house was not part of the housing development -- it is ranch style and a guy from Alaska built it). There is a horse rescue group that uses the back pastures for their horses -- usually 6-8 horses are kept there and we feed them apples and talk to them. Our road is not paved -- it is rocky; the other side of the development has pavement. The dog and I walk the "loop", but avoid going out on the main road where there are trucks and fast traffic. My husband makes the loop on a bicycle and the dog can run and stretch his legs. Some of the neighbors are putting in swimming pools this year, so there are work men out early. It is peaceful and we don't interact much with the neighbors -- everyone has at least one acre of land and some have much more land that is either not able to be used for a house (it won't drain) or they have extra property for privacy. We have been here for 23 years and most of the neighbors moved in about the same time we did. Mary Alice -- sure hope you can get those feet feeling better (if your feet hurt, everything hurts!). My sister-in-law who is one year younger than I am is very athletic -- she rides bicycles for miles (she is on a 22-mile touring trip right now), swims, hikes, and does kayaking. I can't do any of that and really don't want to. Some days I can walk about a mile or a mile and a half -- some days I am barely able to make it to the mailbox due to aches and pains. I do admire people who can run and climb hills and do exercising. My old body is just too worn out to do much -- 40+ years of being a nurse and lifting people, pounding long hallways, and working long shifts have taken their toll. Having had two major surgeries has also handicapped my ability to use my legs. Our young dog keeps me moving, though. He always makes sure I am up and going and keeping him busy. Our granddaughter also helps keep both of us young because of her endless energy. Wishing you a blessed week with pain-free days, renewed motivation, and some goals obtained. Take care of yourselves and those precious mutts!

Good morning, I go in at 11A to day and it is a short day only 4 hours. Maybe me feet will get a little rest.

I have a wll fit and have thought about working out on it, but that would require standing.

Hope you are doing better today MaryAlice, I have been busy with the Wii Fit Plus Team lately and training to try to do my first 5K. Today for the first time I was able to run a whole mile and did it in 15 mins, so about 4 mph.

Good morning No walk for Mutt and me this morning. It is raining. The weather person says we are so far in to the drought that it would have to rain everyday for a week or two to brake the drought, so I won't complain about a little rain.

Morning Group -- Warm day predicted for our part of the country, also. Jeffery and I did our morning walk -- the evening one sometimes is close to dark these days. Busy day at the clinic yesterday -- we had to start late because the regular doctor didn't come due to his father being in the hospital. One of the older doctors came around noon. We couldn't see as many patients and they weren't very happy about our decision. I am always tired on Friday and mainly try to get caught up on everything. I have a workshop tomorrow that is required in order to help in our granddaughter's school. My husband finally finished mowing the lawn -- it takes him about 5 days due to the heat/humidity and the dampness. I noticed that our neighbors who plant a huge garden have plowed under the early plants and are starting over again. Hope your week has gone smoothly -- sneaking up to a new month already. Some of the schools start back in a couple of weeks. I am helping collect school supplies for indigent children. Be nice to your fur-ry friends and keep them cool!

Good morning another hot one. we might not hit the tripled digits predated. Now the weather man says 99. Between the heat and my feet killing me, I don't expect to get much done. Some how the heat drains my even inside.

Morning Group -- More storms predicted for our area. My GD and I did get to the sprinkler playground at the county park yesterday after I picked her up from dance camp. She had fun meeting new children and just cooling off. The place smells like clorox, though. Brought her to our house afterwards and she got to play with the dog and cats. Then, had to take her to her gymnastics class. All of this ended up being almost 100 miles of driving. Off to the clinic today -- really hope it isn't so busy today because I am tired. Glad that the British baby got named -- with three names, he will probably have a nickname. Good luck, Mary Alice, getting some type of schedule that works with your life -- sounds like you are filling a "slot" and they don't much care whether that is convenient for you. Take care, spend time with your dog buddies, each your fruits and veggies!

Good morning. Monday I wrote the zone manager a note and asked another manager to put it in her office. Yesterday I asked her if she had a chance to look into my schedule. She said she never got the note. I wrote her another. I bugged her whenever I saw her all day, which wasn't very often, somedays she is around all shift and others I hardly see her. As she left to clock out I asked again. She said "oh that is why I have this piece of paper in my pocket." Well she changed my schedule. I'm working 2P to 9P.

Good morning we are heading for triple digits. Mutt and I went for a 40 min walk, Mutt is eating Paws, doggie ice cream, and I have frozen yogurt.

Next week I have another turn around. i went to HR and told them I wanted to change my availability. They reminded me this would cut my hours, Wal-Mart doesn't like it if you aren't anytime. I told I knew and that is why I waited so long, but I was too old for turn arounds, they could give them to younger folks. HR told me my zone manager's job was to make sure NO ONE had turn arounds. I asked why I had them once a month, my next one is next week. She told me to ask my zone manager. Her response, I keep forgetting to check Customer Service, I've just been checking cashiers. I've told many managers my displeasure with turn arounds, above and below the zone manager for 2 years and this is first anyone has told me there is someone that checks to make sure they don't happen. I'm not a happy camper, so much for customer service, turn arounds don't make good employees.

They said on the news that James William Spencer Charles was the most popular name. It ticks all the boxes as to who the baby should be named after. Except Spencer, that was Diana's maiden name and William said he was going to use his mothers name.

Morning Group -- We got up into the 90s yesterday, so our outside time had to be planned not to get heat stroke. I walked Jeffery early and my husband gave him a bike ride after dinner. I was going to take our granddaughter to the water sprinklers at the county park, but her mother scheduled a doctor appt. for her due to a cough (just allergies). She was very disappointed, but we did go play at the Mall and also went to the book store. She was happy to see our cats and Jeffery -- sometimes it is weeks between visits. One of the cats is afraid of her, but he was probably abused by a child (he is the feral one who moved in after being abandoned). Happy birth of the new royal baby -- wonder if Kate was surprised that it was a boy. Anyone want to venture a guess on a name -- George/Andrew and something else have been suggested. I had lots of girl names picked out for our children -- didn't get to use them, since we had three boys! Now we have a Lily and a Polly as granddaughters. Found some artichokes yesterday at Costco -- they are probably our favorite food and very rare in this part of the country. They make a meal if you eat a big one. Of course, you have to dip them in butter or mayonnaise, which ups the calories and takes away some of the benefits of just having a veggie for dinner. My day will be much the same as yesterday, except Lily wants to fix dinner for her parents. She likes to cook and wants to learn how to make casseroles, pies, snacks. We will probably go to the grocery store that has recipe cards and make something she likes. We didn't have time yesterday. Have a great day of healthy eating and getting in some exercise. My spouse is getting his hearing tested and may end up with hearing aids -- he can't even hear the phone ring and I am sure he doesn't hear things that he should when he drives. His sister, who is four years younger, has had "aides" for a couple of years. The father would never wear his, but grumbled about all the "noise". I get tired of yelling to make myself heard around here!

Evening Greetings! Made it through the week-end. Have granddaughter duty three afternoons this week -- picking her up from her dance camp and watching her until her parents get off work. It rained again this afternoon -- started to rain when I took the dog around the walking loop and then really let loose after we got home. Wish we could send some water to whomever could use it -- we have never been this wet during the summer. Made it to Sunday School and church -- really enjoy both of those activities. Can't help with the vacation Bible school because it is in the evening and I will be trying to get the GD back to her parents about the time it starts. Maybe next year... Did some shopping yesterday -- good sales/coupons at several of the stores. Staples stores are giving away these special cards for 15% off school supplies for several months. Hope you have a nice Monday and have new plans to get the weight off, spend more time with your canines, and eat better foods!

Every thing beautiful in its time,
From the hour when the stars of the morning chime,
To the sunset glow, when the vesper ray
Shoots through the veil of the closing day.
In the heavens above, on the earth below,
In the forest’s murmur, the river’s flow,
Through every season, in every clime,
All things are beautiful in their time.

The heart is the first feature of working minds.

Good morning. I'm trying to get it together to take Mutt for a walk, my feet are killing me and I din't work yesterday.

When I put lilies in my pond I put 1 pink lilly and 1 yellow. As the years went by the yellow took over the pond and I saw less and less of the pink till I never saw a pink flower. Some of you remember in the fall I said the lilly pads where so thick I couldn't see the flowers so I pulled all the lilies. Well I had pulled one bulb out of the tangled mess of roots and bulbs and this spring tossed it in the pond. The lilly grow and had loads of flower buds, yesterday I went out and I have a pond covered with PINK flowers. My only thought is that the yellow bloomed earlier in the year when there were fewer lilly pads and the lilly pads were too thick later in the year for the pink flowers to surface.

Good morning, I'm late getting on. I'm off today. Mutt and I went for an early walk. My computer had a problem, so I decided to turn it off and go to town with DH. The shoes I wear for work are starting to split and with all the foot problems I'm having the last thing I need is bad shoes. Besides I can wear any shoes I want to work, but if they aren't in good condition I'm out of dress code, and that is a real bad thing.I found a pair of running shoes that look kind of funky, cost more then I meant to spend, but when I walked around the store I didn't feel like I was putting my foot on the floor. Hope spending more gets me a better pair of shoes.

Morning Group -- We had a humdinger of a rain storm last evening. We must have gotten over 4 inches of rain. The power kept going off and the ambulances were busy going past the house. When these "cells" come by after an afternoon of very high temperatures, the air gets explosive. Mary Alice, I have gotten turned around at night and totally lost because I guess I use certain landmarks for guidance. I went to a meeting at night in a neighborhood that was new to me -- when I came out it was dark and there was road construction. Several of the exits were blocked. I started to panic, but eventually re-traced my route by trying to remember how many crossroads I had gone by. Usually I have a GPS system to guide me. Another time I was out in the woods and stayed lost going from one small road to another for what seemed like hours. Very scarey and it takes some mind control to get back on track! Sure were lots of frogs singing last night -- it is almost like they pop out of the ground or trees when the big rains come. Off to the clinic today for a day of work. As always, we have the chance of afternoon thunderstorms. My husband took Jeffery for his late walk after the thunder had passed. They both came in very wet. Have a great day -- stay cool/dry/focused! Greetings to any new member I may have missed -- will have to look for new pictures and read some blogs...

Solitude shared with animals has a special quality and rarely turns into loneliness.
May Sarton,

Goog morning, I think it rained off and on most of yesterday kind of hard to tell when you are in customer service in Wal-Maet. Last night I stopped to get some fish, the ones that swim, between the dark and the rain I thought I was on one road and when I realized that the road I was on didn't look right even for the dark and rain I discovered I was on a road I never heard of, and had no idea how I got on the road, so couldn't back track. my 20 min drive took over an hour.

Warm day in our area -- now we are moving into the high 90s. It is starting out warmer in the mornings, too. Have to plan our outside activities more carefully now because of the heat. Did some deliveries of school supplies to a lady who is collecting items and she gave me a big box of t-shirts for some indigent people. Nice that we can exchange things that are useful for others who really are in need of help. Stopped in at our Walmart after a meeting and there were long lines -- they aren't hiring enough people for the registers. It isn't good to have to wait 20-30 minutes, especially if you have things like ice cream in your basket! Hope your week is going smoothly -- can't believe it is almost Wednesday already...

Good Morning. It has been raining and boy do we need it. Mutt and I got a 50 min walk yesterday. I go in at 11 this morning.

Good Morning. We were to have storms yesterday and last night. We had some sprinkles. I wish it would rain already. All this cloud cover is holding pollutants in and my sinuses but it it.

Good afternoon group -- We started out with rain, but now it is somewhat clear and windy. Our son called this morning and said that our granddaughter's beach party was cancelled. So, I got ready for church. Then, he called and said that it was still going to happen. We decided not to go -- it was a long drive for us and we don't really like the beach that much. It was a party for her and her friends and we don't really know the young parents. I feel bad that we didn't make the effort, but some days it is hard to just get going and get done what has to be done. Still having allergy problems and being outside doesn't help. Sorry to hear about foot problems -- sometimes those arch supports (Dr. Shoal's) help or a better pair of shoes with built-in support. Keeping your feet up when you finally get a chance can reduce the swelling. I used to use one of those foot massagers and also a foot soak device that seemed to help circulation (a foot tub that swirled the water around). An Epsom salt bath can be helpful because the salt is soothing. It isn't so great to have to stand for long periods and not get a break. Those long hours aren't good for anyone. Hope someone will listen to you about not doing that "switch-back" scheduling. Love the quote for today -- not a day goes by that I don't remember some of the wisdom from my mother or a quote from a book or a comment from a friend. We are the composite of all of our life exposures and experiences -- good and bad. I try to write down a "lesson" from each day in a notebook.

The people we love are built into us. Every day I am suddenly aware of something someone taught me long ago — or just yesterday — of some certainty and self-awareness that grew out of conflict with someone I loved enough to try to encompass, however painful that effort may have been
May Sarton

Good morning, I'm off today. I have some beading that needs done and a quilt that needs backed. Things I can do sitting down. I was talking to some of the ladies at work to see what they do about foot pain. The told me that my feet would stop hurting 2 months after i quit. They said my feet would get better when I turned 65 because with soc sec I could go down to 24 hours a week.

Good morning, Another hot one. Wal-mart was so hot the night before last had sweat rolling down my legs and the breakroom was even worse. Then Wal-mart got upset that we weren't smelling as fresh as we could. I guess someone complained, yesterday they put a fan in the breakroom. I finally found something for the prickly heat.

Melissa, Wal-Mart says I have a schedule, they says I work days, but I don't think so, I work 19 to 40 hours a week, 3 to 5 days a week, 4 to 8 hours a day, can start anytime between 7A and 7P and get off anytime between 11A and 11P. At least once a month I get off at 11P one day and go in at 7A the next morning. My body is so confused.

Morning Group -- Another very rainy day in our area. It was drizzly yesterday, but not a "wash out". My day will include going to my friend's funeral at 2 p.m. As Melissa said, having a stroke is a devastating event, especially if it takes away your ability to swallow, talk, move, and be independent. My friend and I had long talks about how being an invalid is not how you want to spend your end-of-life time. She was a dignified lady and kept her family going, even though her husband died many years ago of cancer. She raised her three children and took care of her sister who was on constant oxygen and died in her home. She then took care of her granddaughter and the granddaughter's out of wedlock son. Her own son came home to live when his wife left him. She never complained and she met each day with more determination. Another sad story to share: an 18 year old boy who helped run his parents' book store in the next town (it is the place where I get most of my used books because they "trade" for ones you take in) broke his ankle a couple of weeks ago. He has always been extremely overweight (around 250 pounds at the time of his death), even as a young boy. The hospital did surgery, then he got an infection, then his kidneys failed. When he was in the process of receiving dialysis for the first time, he stopped breathing and went into cardiac arrest and died. His name was Matthew. About 10 years ago, his mother was one of my patients at a small hospital near Charleston -- she had a rare tumor and had to be in the hospital during the Christmas season. She recovered and we have had many interesting chats over the years when I went to the book store. Her husband weighs around 350 pounds. I can remember the boy and the spouse eating huge buckets of KFC chicken while the mother/wife was in the hospital. Matthew looked like he was in his 30s, not a teen-ager. Feeling very sad for the loss of this young man who was always nice to the customers and who was a real computer "wiz". We do have a serious problem with obesity among the younger generation and it can lead to early death. This is just one example of many that happen every day. If you have children or grandchildren with weight problems, don't wait to get them some help. A person's internal organs age greatly if the weight problem is extended over many years and if it starts early. Take care, be kind to your fuzzy friends, try to help someone who is struggling with being overweight.

Humans and dogs first crossed paths more than ten thousand years ago. Dogs share our lives more completely than does any other animal. Since their domestication, dogs have accompanied and served us in many ways.

Lennie-- So sorry to hear about your friend. I hate to even say this, but her passing may be easier on her family in the long run. It is so hard to see my dad disabled and when he has so many struggles to overcome and when he gets angry and frustrated and tired!

MaryAlice-- Sounds like you are very good at your job! Sounds crazy how you were scheduled the other day. Did your headache pass before you had to return to work? I'm sorry you are always in pain. I missed exercise today due to a very high blood sugar that I can't seem to bring down! I really hate to miss a day of exercise!

I love to hear about dogs who try to herd children! Sassy is a darling, but she can be so crazy! She's been going in and out all day. She had an accident this AM, but it was solid and that is a relief! She is so vocal! She barks, she cries, she murmurs and sighs. I just know she will be a great dog once she gets out of the puppy crazies!

I hope everyone has a good weekend and feels better! That includes me! I need to go see my Dad. I'm happy he has been able to call me today. He struggles with the phone. Have a great weekend1!

Good morning. I'm so frustrated. I know I need to exercise more, I know I need to watch what i eat, I know all about calories in calories out. the problem is I'm so tired and in pain so much of the time. Not sleepy tired, physically tired. I'm trying chair exercises, but sometimes I can't even find the umph for that. I;m getting ore exercise on my off days, but days I work my body says it has to conserve energy and the day slips away before any exercise gets done.

“Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there.”

Good morning, I'm off today. I'm wonder what the computer is doing today. Yesterday I was scheduled to work 2 to 7. I got to customer service and the lady that works 7A to 4P was sill there, the closer was there, the person that close CS at 11P. There was 1 customer. I went to the manager and asked if she really wanted me in CS. She said she didn't know why but the computer had both Leroy and I both coming in at 2.

I was asked to go to self checkout. I'm unusual for a cashier. I like self checkout I don't stand behind the counter, I walk around saying hi and trying to figure out who needs me to stay close because they look like they will have problems. People that will be needing me are, people with young children, children don't understand staying off the scales, people with age restricted things, people that look like they are knew at self checkout, people that have a child helping, children that are eager to help don't always leave things on the scale long enough. Working self checkout has the advantage that I walked for 3 .5 hours, disadvantage that I was on concert with no mat.

Sorry for your loss.

Hi Group -- Watching the weather forecast and hoping for the best. It was very warm yesterday and muggy. My friend died a few hours after I visited her at the nursing home -- her funeral will be sometime next week. They did move her back to the hospital because they saw that she was getting worse. Met up with our granddaughter and her parents and other grandmother at a pizza place last evening to have a little family party for Lily's birthday. I just had a spinach salad -- my throat still hurts too much to eat anything hard/rough. Off to the clinic today to see how things are going there. Trying to collect school supplies because it won't be long until schools are open again. So much fun to hear about Sassy -- just like babies, though, they needs tons of attention/care. Jeffery is so funny in the morning -- he tries to "herd" the kitties and they just aren't doing that! He got a late walk yesterday evening since we had gone out to dinner. He is ready for his early morning walk now. Take care -- stay healthy -- hug those doggies!

Oh my! Sassy is tall enough now that she can stand on her back legs and reach my keyboard! With the Pepto she had solid waste and that is a relief. It is the potty training that is making us crazy right now. She acts like she is afraid to go to the bathroom in the grass. don't know if something bit her or what! Puppies take patience and they are worth it all, but oh boy!

We met with my dad's financial adviser today. I have power of attorney now and we had to make sure we had some funds available for self pay at the rehab center. The guy is really nice and really good about finances. We are actually switching over to him for our own money. We also talked to Dad's insurance broker who seemed like a complete idiot. I don't know how they found these people. Seems to me that they felt sorry for them and decided to give them their business. I learned something else really nice that my dad did too from his finance guy. My parents are/were amazing people.

It has rained so much here! It is crazy! It has rained every single day for 18 days straight. Most of them have been storms. They are calling for Chantelle to hit land in Haiti, well I guess that was last night, and they were expecting 10 inches of rain! If it comes to land in Savannah like they are predicting that means that Lennie and I will be on the northern edge of the eye and that means alot more rain for both of us!

Lennie-- Crazy about all those people breaking their wrists! Goodness! Sorry to hear about your friend's stroke. I hope and pray every day that my dad will get back some movement in his arm and will be able to walk again, even if it is with a cane or walker. He's really fighting! So sorry you have such a fear of water! Water is so peaceful and comforting to me. I love it! It is strange to me that people fear it, but I certainly don't discount that fear. I have helped a couple people overcome severe fear of water. Both will get in my pool with the knowledge of being able to put their feet on the bottom and be safe. One is even learning to swim.

MaryAlice-- Thanks for the puppy wishes! Hope your headache has passed. Nothing worse really.

Well, I have alot of exercise to make up for! I worked out yesterday, but didn't do my bootcamp videoes or my 1 mile daily walks. I can't wait to get Sassy into puppy training classes! She is so cute! I really want to get pics posted and soon! My hubby however has been totally stressed and in an ill mood.

Hi Group -- Not a good week so far. Found out that my nursery partner for 16 years at a local church had a stroke 2 1/2 weeks ago and her prognosis is not good (went to see her today and she did not wake up -- the stroke was caused by blood clots after her pacemaker mal-functioned). She is nine years older than I am. We met over 22 years ago and went to the same church until I decided to leave last October. She has 3 children, 5 grandchildren, and one great grandchild. They called me yesterday and told me that I should go see her. My sister-in-law in California broke her wrist over the 4th of July week-end. It was a bad break and she had to go to a specialist to have a plate and screws put in to stabilize it. The wife of one of my husband's golf buddies just got her cast off after breaking her wrist last month. The neice of my local DIL has a broken wrist after falling down during a session at a basketball camp two weeks ago. Guess it is not a good time to fall these days if you end up hurting your wrist. Cute about the water play -- I have almost drowned more times than I care to remember (twice falling off a dock; once at a summer camp; once in the ocean), so I do not like water of any kind (don't even like to be in a bathtub). I never could swim too well and all of these incidents added to my fear of water. Going to the beach is awful -- I worry all the time about someone drowning. The most I care to do is walk in the rain if it isn't a thunderstorm. Now we are tracking a tropical storm that may or may not come to our area early next week. Our youngest granddaughter is turning 6 years old tomorrow. We are going out for pizza tomorrow night. She got her ears pierced a couple of months ago -- I found some tiny earrings, but they may not be for children (had my ears pierced twice, but could never wear earrings). Her mother bought her at least two dozen pairs. My main gift is having two pictures custom framed of two fairies that are dancers -- cost more than I wanted to spend, but she can always use the frames if she outgrows the pictures. Love to hear about Sassy and have been praying she gets her tummy settled -- she may need to have some mild medication until her system can accept the food. We have had several dogs with eating difficulties. Our old Siamese is having digestive problems and we clean up daily messes. Sending out good "vibes" that your week ahead is smooth and without problems! New book coming out next week by David Rosenfelt -- he writes mystery stories that include a Golden Retriever -- the new book (Unleashed) is his eighth or ninth. The main character is Andy Carpenter, a lawyer who defends dogs and people.

I'd say that living in Texas, in the heat, means you should be a water baby! I'm glad. Water has always been a part of my life. My mom had us in the pool in her hometown with me, shortly after birth and with my brother and sister about age 9 months due to weather. We all 3 loved water and my nephew does too.Glad they have so much fun wit hplaying in and around and with water!

We are going with self pay for Dad and hoping improvements continue to happen before he is broke and forced to go on Medicaid. I just feel so bad for him.

Sassy is still sick. We are giving her the Pepto. She sees the vet for another booster next week. They are not worried, so guess we shouldn't be either. Right now she is coming in and going back out the doggie door over and over. Guess she is practicing her new skill! Now if she would only use her new skill for good, not evil, or rather for its purpose.

Later! Hug a mutt today!

When you're the only sane person, you look like the only insane person.
--Criss Jami

Good morning, DD says that she has 2 water babies. She went over to a friends house yesterday and the boys were out the back door into the water, She said that Tony pored buckets full of water over Alex's head. she was concerned, Alex turned 1 last month. Alex would get a startled expression on his face, squeal and get all excited, laughing and waving his hands. DD said both boys were prunes before they tired of the game. Alex always looked startled, squealed then got excited.

Oh, the miracles dogs can perform! I know they have done me miracles time and time again.

It is nearing 7 which is Sassy's crazy time. I don't know what gets into her, but oh my!

Lennie-- Sinus troubles are so annoying. I do hope yours clears up soon. It has been storming and/or raining here for what seems to be forever! Everyone's gardens are being sodden and ruined. I bet they still complain of droughts! The river is high and it is just muggy, buggy and icky!

Sassy is still sick to her tummy. The vet told us to give her a half of a chewable Pepto Bismo. She did NOT eat it like a treat!

She is growing so fast!

Morning Group -- Hot in our area too (the rain has stopped temporarily). Jeffery goes crazy if he can't get his walks, also -- he makes our house into a race track and does his own exercising (it is really amusing to watch!). Off to do some errands -- still dragging around with my sinus problems. Did make it to Sunday School and church yesterday. Our GD came over to see us and we had a great time -- we set up a 5 foot blow-up swimming pool from K-Mart and just let her splash to her heart's content. Jeffery doesn't like water and he wouldn't come near us -- stayed up on the porch and just watched the action. Sure wish I felt better -- until things dry out, I am just stuck with allergy effects. Hope you have some fun activities planned for the week -- our summers seem to drag on forever and I get tired of the heat. Must get myself motivated to make some salsa and clean cupboards and get rid of outgrown/unwanted clothes. Stay on track/walk those doggies/give treats as needed!

No true and permanent fame can be founded except in labors which promote the happiness of mankind
Charles Sumner

Good Morning. Another hot one. DH took me out for breakfast and I saw we are under a burn ban. This morning I heard a squeal, very short and not very loud, but some thing told me to get outside. 5 dumped dogs were fighting over something in my front yard. I sent them packing. They had a cat. Poor kitty would have been better off if I had let them finish where they started. She was gone before we could get something to finish the job. It was so quite, the dogs didn't bark, looks like they just snuck in, grabbed the cat and started pulling it in different directions. Mutt was outside and he didn't respond. Mutt doesn't bark much, but does have his ways of alerting my to problems. Not the way I wanted to start the day. No it wasn't Freyja. It was an outside cat the neighbors feed to keep around for field mice.

I had a dog I took to nursing homes. One day a nurse had a problem and I dropped the lease to help her. The dog took off and started licking the hands of a resident that was just there, she hadn't responded in several months. I ran to get the dog and the nurse with her told me to leave him. When I got closer the resident had the biggest smile and was saying "puppy, puppy" over and over again.

"Action may not always bring happiness; but there is no happiness without action."
– Benjamin Disraeli

Good morning. Yesterday was Tony and Alex's birthday party. 10 kids, 95 degree temps and a 3 hour water ballon fight. The rule was you couldn't throw balloons at adults. I don't think the children thought I was an adult or maybe it is that I was filling balloons and the hose kept slipping. It wasn't planned on 3 hours of throwing water balloons, but that is what the children wanted to do. Anyway we had a blast. I eat too much, but most if it was fruit. I gained 2 pounds yesterday, but if I gained it that fast it must be water and I'll flush it today.

This heat is getting to Mutt. No he isn't over heated. He wants more walks, he wants to run and he is stuck in the house. With 3/4 an area of fenced back yard he has room to run.Sometimes he just runs round and round the backyard.

Hi Group -- Back from pet therapy and running some errands. Jeffery wants a walk -- he can smell the animals on me. I want to take him to a series of classes before I take him to the assisted living places. The two dogs that we have used for several years are both getting quite old (13 years and 14 years). We had a good group today at Pinewood Assisted Living -- mainly women, but they stayed for the entire hour and we had some good discussions. The old cocker-mix, Dottie, was present for today's session. She is almost totally deaf now, but still likes being petted and watches what the cats are doing. It is a good way to spend a Saturday morning. I usually go consignment shopping after that -- there is a huge place that has everything from clothes to household items to books and toys. I can always find some "treasures". Only in the low 80s right now, but there are storm clouds. Last night one of the new lights we had installed in the garage crashed to the ground and the glass went everywhere -- my husband called the electrician today, but I don't think he is going to do anything about it. We bought all the fixtures and the fan, so I guess we are responsible for the quality. Sure scared the cats! Another night of coughing and losing sleep -- don't know what to do at this point. Trying to eat better food to get my body to heal itself -- adding antibiotics usually spells disaster (can only take one type now and I need to take it only if things are super bad). This is what comes from taking so much medication as a child and then being bombarded with antibiotics in our foods. The weather may not make you sick, but the effects of constant rain and high temperatures "breeds" lots of mold and "bugs". Have a great rest of the week-end...quite rare that a holiday allows for a 4 day week-end.

Humans and dogs first crossed paths more than ten thousand years ago. Dogs share our lives more completely than does any other animal. Since their domestication, dogs have accompanied and served us in many ways.

Hello Mutt Loving Friends! It is hot here too and humid! Rain showers come up apparently for no reason except perhaps the humidity! Th sun was shining bright and it was hot yesterday and we go out of the car and it suddenly started pouring rain!

I promise to post pics of Sassy soon! My husband has to help me and he has been as stressed as I and maybe even more since he does all the physical work for my dad's care! We'll get them up there soon tho! she has already grown and changed so much!

Cathy-- She can eat the stupid Purina Puppy chow with no problem, but started the upset tummy when we mixed Iames gluton free in. But, she also had a few treats. I think it is because the treats were not made for puppies. They were small, but not puppy intended. She had no problem with the puppy chews I bought her made by NylaBone (sp?). she has no problem with the puppy Dentastix either.Jack always threw up if he got hold of a hot dog and he threw up when he got hold of a corn cob too! I have to see about chicken. Kitty's (BIGPAWSUP) Tazzy is allergic to chicken also. Since I stopped the treats she has had solid poops. I know, lovely topic, but they are our babies and this is what we discuss! LOL! How is the deep water aerobics going? Would love a class like that! And, is it still real hot there?

MaryAlice-- So happy to hear how well Beka is adapting. You did a fine job with her. I'm glad she makes friends easily. Poor Mutt with the fireworks! Yes, I'd have a tough time speed walking after a 3 mile walk too! How hot is it there? Take care when out in it! Have fun at the boys' party!

When I take Sassy over to the rehab center where dad is, so many of the residents smile. One lady who is over 100 and rarely makes sense when she speaks stopped us and asked to pet Sassy and told me she and her husband used to raise dogs. It was so nice to carry on a short conversation with her! Many other people would stop and ask to pet her. some would just want to look at her. Many did the same with Jack, but Jack couldn't walk on those slick floors! His balance was so bad he couldn't stand up on the slick floors, but the first visit there he jumped up on Dad's bed and laid with him. Oh, I miss that boy! But, I feel Sassy feels left out with so many pics of Jack around and his scent is every where. I think that is one reason she keeps peeing on the carpet! I need to put a pic of me and her as my profile pic too. My profile pic always had Jack in it with me!

She keeps coming in and going back out the doggie door right now and she is being too quiet. I better go check on her!

We decide to love one another not because the other is loveable but because we are loving beings. We love because love is our essence, because we are called to make this love real in the world.
Jeanne Harrison Nieuwejaar

Good morning, Another hot one. Tony and Alex birthday party is today. No they don't have the same birthday, their birthdays are 2 weeks apart. DD said now while they are young she will have them together. Tony was 4 on the 4th and Alex was 1 on June 26th. Tony and Alex are 1st generation American on his fathers side and his father is so happy Tony was born on the fourth. Of my 7 grandchildren, 3 were born on holidays, Davin, long a, on Halloween, Rianaha on Christmas and Tony on the 4th.

Mutt and I got 2 min from the house last night before the fireworks got too much for him. To be honest when fireworks went off went off 100 feet behind us the startled me. The good news we got our 3 mile walk the bad news the last 2 min was speed walking. I can speed walk 2 min easy, after a 3 mile walk not so easy.

Melissa, Sasha got diarrhea after eating chicken. Buddy and Rocco seem okay with it, but I know it is hormone laden, so try to feed them the more expensive all natural dog foods.

Rocco turned bright red even the whites of his eyes after I gave him an ear of corn to eat. Same thing happened when he got a loaf of bread off the counter. Then his skin turned all crusty and flaky and he starts lost patches of his hair. So no wheat and corn for him.

Buddy gets tummy aches sometimes. He eats grass and pukes. I think hot dogs are a no no for both dogs. Probably the nitrates and nitrites they are laced with.

Will you post pictures of Sassy soon so we can see her?

Lennie, Does Jeffrey go to the assisted living facilities with you?

MA, Glad Beka is adapting so well.

Hello All!

Lennie-- Hope you are feeling tip top real soon. That veggie tart sounds delish! Sassy's problem is not holding it.... We take her out every hour on the hour when we are here and she goes out and prances around (truly prances) for 15 to 20 minutes and comes right back in and pees on the floor! I don't know what else to do! The bad thing is that I take her out and she sneaks by me and comes back in thru the doggie door! I usually can hear that, but then I can't get her back out without carrying her! Oh my!

Maryalice-- Glad you can make the party! Would hate for you to miss it! How is Beka tdong? Have you heard from her?

My dad turned over in bed while they were changing his clothes and hurt his leg. they took Xrays and there is no obvious break, but the doc says he sees something and now wants a cT scan. I've gotten so skeptical of these places and doctors that I fear he is just running up charges, but won't risk not having it done.

Sassy is a mess! Jack was a tiny bit older when we got him. He had some potty training and only had accidents when he couldn't hold it! She seems to pee for spite! Today I cam in from outside to find her chewing up her puppy pad! She had peed on it and it really seemed as if she was destroying the evidence! LOL! Good thing she is so pretty!

Rest well everyone!

Hi Group -- I am still getting over my respiratory and sinus infections (up at 3 a.m. again trying to breathe). Didn't log on yesterday to wish you a Happy Independence Day -- actually went to Walmart to get some items to cook and take over to our local kids' place for dinner. I made a cookie for Lily to frost and top with "blue" and "red" fruits -- saw that on television in the morning (just plain sugar cookie dough spread in a pan and you can use any type of spread -- cool whip or cream cheese flavors or canned frosting). Couldn't put the 50 stars or 13 stripes to make an official flag, but we squeezed in what we could. Made a veggie type of snack with puff pastry, but I substituted filo dough, which didn't cook too well -- it was called "garden vegetable tart" with zucchini, cherry tomatoes, and corn off the cob. I had made something like it before with just the cherry tomatoes. The kids didn't want us to bring the dog, so we left him at home. We didn't stay much past dinner because we knew the neighbors would be shooting off fireworks and he would be scared. Melissa -- it takes a long time to train a new puppy (they usually can't "hold it" until they are 6 months old). We have had lots of puppies through the years -- too old to go through that now (and not patient enough). Had to laugh about your comments regarding dogs that can't swim due to their "density". We had a big basset hound named Gretchen when I was in high school. My parents built a houseboat on a lake and we drove from the coast inland when it was so foggy in N. California. The dog had a special floatation device that was canvas -- looked kinda like a small canoe. We could put the dog in it to paddle around and she loved it. My brother in Hawaii still has a basset hound -- he has always had one in his life. He can't take his dog too many places because it likes to bark at everything and anything (he tried a bark collar, but that just made it worse). We put up with lots of "bad habits" because we love our pets so much. Jeff and I got our feet really wet on the morning walk -- we got another 2 inches of rain between yesterday and this morning. Sun is out, but there are showers. Already 90 degrees plus outside, so it will just evaporate. Had an electrician put new lights in our garage because the humidity wouldn't allow us to use our fluorescent fixtures and we had a squeaky fan in the den we were tired of listening to -- the sound of silence is wonderful! Pet therapy at an assisted living home tomorrow -- haven't done it for about a month due to other commitments. Hope your week-end is super special and that you can stop and give thanks for the people who keep us safe and for our precious country that stands for liberty and justice for all -- prayers to those in Egypt who are in civil war again...

"It takes courage to grow up and turn out to be who you really are."

Good morning, I'm off again today. DD had told me that the 6th was Tony and Alex's birthday party. I got the day off. Then I saw she posted on face book that it was the 5th so I ran back to HR and got the day changed. Now it is too late to change, I find out that Facebook was wrong and tomorrow is the party. At least the party is at a park down the road from Wal-Mart, is from 12 to 2 and I go in at 6:30. I'm going to stay off my feet but get some exercise.

i took Mutt to the vet once when he was in pain in the gut area. The vet said he had a bad case of garbage gut and to keep him out of the trash. As long as I keep people food away from him he is fine.

Happy 4th! Love that quote from Erma Bombeck Mary Alice! Thanks for sharing!

Cathy-- thanks for the link!

This is one thing I LOVE about this team! We ask questions and if we don't know, someone will look it up and tell us! Interesting about the dense bones. Perhaps elephant bones are not as dense?

I know some of y'all's dogs have sensitivities to food.... How did you learn which ones? Sassy gets an upset tummy often and I'm not sure of the source. Do I just remove each item until I know? Could she get diarrhea from being too full? Could the stuffing from toys make her sick?

She is prancing in and out of the doggie door now, but I feel certain she will come in and pee on my floor! What is up with that? I don't remember Jack being this troublesome as a pup, but perhaps he was!

"You have to love a nation that celebrates its independence every July 4th, not with a parade of guns, tanks, and soldiers who file by the White House in a show of strength and muscle, but with family picnics where kids throw Frisbees, the potato salad gets iffy, and the flies die from happiness. You may think you have overeaten, but it is patriotism."
- Erma Bombeck

Good Morning, Happy 4th and emoticon Lynn.

Mutt and I went for a walk last night. We got about 3/4 the way to the turn around when he sat down. The fireworks were just too much for him. They had been shouting them off yesterday and I didn't think they would be that bad till today, but the sky was bright and pretty but the boom boom's were loud. DH will have to make sure he is inside early tonight.

There are some dogs that have bones so dense and heavy that they sink instead of swim. Caesar says they can be taught, but it isn't natural and he doesn't recommend it unless you live where the dog swims for exercise and to get cool because of extreme heat, then the dog must be well supervised and a doggy life jacket is a good idea.

Melissa, I love swimming elephants. I am attaching a link to you tube, for your hubby to describe to you. www.youtube.com/watch?v=HpD40ewOyC4

so, I also found videos of swimming Basset Hounds on You Tube. So I guess we can't believe everything we read on the internet.

Cathy-- I thought all dogs could swim too! I mean, weren't you the one who told me about elephants swimming? If an elephant can swim, why not bassett hounds and bull dogs? I'd love to do deep water aerobics. All we have are the kind where you can put your feet on the bottom. 95? In Oregon? You must be baking!

Lennie-- So sad that people complain of fires and then risk their own lives and so many others by not taking care of potential issues!

Sassy is driving us nuts! I really should have avoided a puppy. She goes out every hour with me and then comes right back in and does her business on the floor or worse, the carpet! I don't know what to do any more. I can smel she did big business in here today, but can't find it! Augh! She is so darling though. Hard to stay mad!

I'm off again today. I hope I can get something worked out. I'm in so much pain and it is getting my attitude down. This isn't helping my diet at all. I'm eating too much of the wrong things.

Rain, rain and more rain... Wish we could send some to the parts of the country that are dry and baking in the intense heat. So sorry about the 19 Forest Service fire fighters who died in Arizona. My husband did fire work with the U. S. Forest Service for about 45 years -- he was always off on fires during the summer and fall, all over the country. We never took a vacation during the summer and he missed more of our wedding anniversaries than he was present. Now I have family members in my sister's family who do fire fighting -- two women and the husband of one of them. It is hard work and always dangerous. They used to burn brush in the winter months to get rid of the "fuel" that builds up in the forests. Someone decided not to do that anymore and so many people now live right next to the forests and complain about the smoke. It only takes a spark and thousands of acres become a raging fire. The kids and I were living in N. California in a tiny town called Fall River Mills -- all of the forest service guys who could went off to S. California to fight forest fires. No one was there to put out the ones that started on the forest in our town -- the weather finally put them out, but for weeks, all we could see and smell was smoke. Prayers to all of the families of the people involved -- just like the military workers, they do what is expected and follow orders. Sometimes things go horribly wrong...

Took up deep water aerobics with GD. It is 95. I wish we were in the pool now. Of course living in Oregon, I don't have air conditioning. No place to set up the portable either. Wait, I have an idea. I will let you know if it works.

Rocco can't swim. I guess Basset Hounds and Bull dogs sink. They are too dense. Of course I have never taken him anywhere to swim. Thank goodness, as I thought all dogs could swim. Buddy does. He has been in the creek at the park.

Hello Group -- Here is our general discussion site for the month. Send lots of comments, so we can stay connected and share ideas! Melissa has already posted a July question. The answer I will give is that Jeffery is chewing more stuff and getting into the "stuffing" of some very sturdy toys. Now he has many less than he did because I've had to put up the ones he has ruined. Also, because my other collies had skin problems, I try to give him more protein and stick to lamb products because chicken causes so many allergic reactions in dogs. He has decided which treats he likes, so I don't buy so many different kinds now.
