The human race has one really effective weapon, and that is laughter.

Mark Twain

Good morning. Today is my mother's unbirthday. Today she is 28 her how old she is she will tell you she is 28 and some months, pushed she will tell you how many months. April 4th is her birthday and she will be 29 and some months. Most people have a problem when she tells them she is 28 and 636 months.

Happy April Fools

Greetings Mutt Group -- Our Easter is coming to an end with a sunset. We didn't have a sunrise that was visible this morning at the lake because it was raining. People came out anyway and used umbrellas. Had a nice breakfast at the Methodist Church -- the men do the cooking and there was a big crowd. Had lunch meal with our local family -- we put together a ham and salad feast. Too drippy to do an Easter egg hunt at the park. I found mostly nutritious snacks for our GD to put in her basket -- fruit snacks and fruit rolls and nuts. We took the dog with us to our kids' house -- he did quite well in the back yard there. More rain predicted for tomorrow. It did get up into the 70s by afternoon. More than 1/3 of the country is in drought conditions -- since the spring rains didn't come, the farmers are already starting to worry. I am glad that it is April tomorrow -- it is probably my favorite month. Look for a new Chit Chat Cafe when you post on Monday. Hope you have had a pleasant day wherever you were and that you could welcome spring in some way. For those of you who follow the basketball play-offs, March Madness is sneaking into April. Baseball season is coming next!

Good morning. Going to be a warm one today. Temps going into the high 70's today. There was a basket of candy on the counter behind me last night. Every time I was tempted, I grabbed a piece and gave it to a child's parent. Ok the children are going to get enough candy today, but figure if the parent gave it to them it was ok. Some how it worked, I got lots of smiles and didn't eat a single piece.

Morning Group -- The sun is shining and it didn't freeze last night. My DH is taking Jeffery for a walk. Lily and I took him for a walk twice yesterday. Lily and the dog have such a great time together -- they play and want to be in the same room. Since there is just Lily in this area, we don't do much about dyeing eggs or fixing Easter baskets. If it doesn't rain tomorrow, we will meet Lily and her parents at the park near their house for a picnic. It is getting closer to our time to travel, so I really need to get busy and do yard work and clean house. We have a lady come twice a day to check on the cats. We are watching the storms in the center of the country and hope they will take a break soon. Best wishes to all of you for a nice Easter. When my mother was alive, we always tried to get to her house for Easter dinner. She loved spring and fixing a big meal. Traditions are what form our memories of family and fun. She always did an Easter egg hunt for her "grands".

Good morning. I had all 4 grandchildren that live in this area yesterday. Tony leaving is a problem. DD says as soon as she says she is going Grandma's Tony gets excited and runs around grandma, grandma. When they get here he runs past me trains trains. He pulls out the old wooden trains. Grandma never even gets a hi. The problem comes when it is time to go home. Tony screams no play trains. Now I'm childless till Sunday evening. Well Beka gets home early evening but I don't get home from work till midnight.

Sounds nice, the daffodils and redbud trees are blooming here. Its supposed to rain all weekend long, which puts a damper on egg hunts, but mine are too old for that anyway.

Good evening group -- We have had a busy day with our granddaughter and the pets. Lily finally got to meet our new dog, Jeffery. They had a great time together. We took Jeffery in the car to deliver her to her father this afternoon and they had a fun time in the van. It is so good to see a young dog and a young girl together. We went to Goodwill store to get the dog a blanket and to see if there were some books and Easter items. We found several things. We took the dog for a long walk and just let him run. This is the first day that has felt even a little bit like spring -- up into the low 60s. Lily and I did some gardening this afternoon -- some critter is uprooting the bulbs we put in pots the last time she came to our place. Lily gets to come again tomorrow, so we may go to a park or playground. Hope you are having a good week. Share what you do for Easter. We have a sunrise service at the local lake that is very inspiring -- anyone can attend and we sing a few songs, have a short sermon, and then go to a small church for a pancake breakfast. Not too many flowers in bloom around our area because it has been so cold. Just seeing the birds return is a great sign of spring!

Good morning. I needed to get Beka a swim suit. Since Beka will be spending the summer with her father, I asked him what the girls were wearing. He said the same as here, but please make sure it is age appropriate and no sling shots and eye patches. Beka picked out a bright yellow swim suit. It is a two piece but the top is long enough that only a inch of her tummy shows, and surprise my tomboy picked a swim suit with ruffles. Her father said he didn't like it and sent me a picture of a swim suit that was a short dress and pantaloons. I don't think she would fit in with that. Beke asked why he wanted her to wear a halloween costume.

Love the dog story. I have seen incidences of bonded dogs doing that on the discovery channel. Usually they had a home though.

MA, I walked Buddy and GD walked Rocco tonight and then they tangled at the door. Rocco started it. I yanked Buddy off as usual and Rocco went after him and had us pinned in the corner. He got my foot in his chest and I barked at him. He was limping this time. If it isn't better in the morning, I will haul him to the vet. He just got up and is not limping. I moved to the garage, but DD is working tonight so I am spending the evening in the house with GD.

Lennie, Jeffrey is adorable. He reminds me of collie and terrier. I will have to look back and see what you said.

Greetings Group -- Late posting today because I have Grandma duty the next two days and can't run around doing errands like I usually do. The dog on my Spark page and to the left of my messages is Jeffery. He is getting at least two walks a day (long walks) because he has so much energy and he loves being outside. We let him off the leash now and use a whistle to get him to come back -- it seems to be working well. I did see that news story about the blind dog and its companion -- it brought tears to my eyes! The pet rescue group that I work with has a blind dog named Rosie -- she was found at a truck stop over 12 years ago. She was going to be "put down" by her owner because she was born blind and deaf. She managed to escape and was smart enough to keep from getting hit by the trucks. The leader of our rescue group drove six hours to get her and bring her home after seeing a news story about her. She is one of the dogs that does pet therapy. Her companion is a small spaniel-mix named Dottie who is even older than Rosie. They live in a big house with lots and lots of cats. Dottie comes to pet therapy sessions, too. The Border Collie rescue site has a blind dog they are trying to re-home. Supposedly the dog does well and can hear. It would be a challenge, however, since we live in a very cluttered house. Sure doesn't seem like almost Easter -- we are still getting freezing temps every night and it barely get into the 50s during the day. This week marks the anniversary of moving to South Carolina from N. California -- 27 years ago during our three boys' spring break. Our youngest son had his 9th birthday in the motel we stayed in while our house was going through escrow. My oldest granddaughter is turning 8 years old next week -- her name is Polly. She lives in Florida and we only see her and her brother a couple times a year. Next week will also be my husband's 70th birthday. Time marches on -- someone sent me a long e-mail about a person describing the "winter of his life". The e-mail warns that time doesn't slow down and to do all those things you have on your "bucket list" while you still can! Hope you are enjoying a "spring fling" and getting ready for the Easter bunny!

I just saw this amazing story on Anderson Live, this afternoon, I HAD to share it. A blind Husky dog was found wandering the streets in California with another dog, which acts as a seeing-eye dog for the husky!! They are said to be like a couple that has been together 50 years! They said the dogs go everywhere together, and the one that can see actually leads the other one around and doesn't leave his side. I find this absolutely wonderful. The pair has been taken in and they are trying to find them a home where they can stay together. So cute. Gives ya that warm & fuzzy feelin' don't it? emoticon

"I learn by going where I have to go."
– Theodore Roethke

Good morning. Yesterday I was suppose to be a short day, 4.5 hours. At 3 my relief called in. That means there was no one to cover customer service after 4:30 and they can't close it till 10:30. I said I would stay till 9, Management came up with a manager that could cover the last hour and half. Only to have another manager call in. Someone needs to teach these people how to make people feel good about working late. They were work, work ,work you have to get everything done there is no one after you. I am sore and tired.

I found out who is taking care of the neighborhood dog. A lady that lives across from the buss stop took the dog in, but every time the school bus came the dog looked like he was going to hurt himself trying to get to the children. She decided that as much as she worried about him being hit by car, it was torturing him to be fenced when the children out there. Now she lets the dog out in the morning, the dog makes his rounds, goes home gets breakfast, lies on the porch watching the neighborhood, when he sees the buss goes back on duty.

Walking might help the dogs get along. It will be good for you.

Morning Group -- We are getting some sunshine and winds, but our storms seem to be gone for now. Much cooler -- almost 18 degrees cooler than earlier last week. When Easter comes early, we seem to have cool-down temps until after the holiday. We did get in three walks with the dog yesterday between downpours. I have forgotten how to post pictures on this site, so will have to refresh my memory and get some pictures of Jeffery for you to see. He has lots of energy and is an eager eater. He woke me up at 1:45 a.m. -- he had gotten two cans of open cat food off of the kitchen counter and also a half-can of his food. He was munching away when I caught him. Need to work on this bad habit and a few others. You never know what a dog has learned to do to survive if they have been a stray. So great to hear a story about someone who reduced their weight and was able to put away a wheelchair. Just a few facts to boost our appreciation for walking: For every pound you lose, you reduce the pressure exerted on your knee joints by 4 pounds, according to a Wake Forest University study. If people walk for 45 minutes a day, five days a week, they can reduce sick days from work from 25% to 50%. The minimum number of minutes to briskly walk each week for optimum health, according to guidelines released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, is 150 minutes. Women who walked 2.5 miles daily as they got older were 8% more effient on memory tests than women who only walked a half-mile per week. Walking not only keeps our physical body strong, it keeps us mentally sharp. So, put on your walking shoes, grab those leashes, and get tracking with those mutts!

Good morning. Yesterday they put out donuts in the lunchroom. When they put out donuts they put out something else, userly cookies or brownies. Well this time it was bananas. That made it a lot easier. Before I have to try and think of something else when I walk past the donuts this time I could and did stop and got a banana.

Faith keeps many doubts in her pay. If I could not doubt, I should not believe.
Henry David Thoreau

Good morning. Last night a lady was returning some cloths. I asked why. She gave me the biggest smile and looked glad I asked. She said I thought I was down to am 18, but I'm all the way down to 16. I asked her if I could tell my weight loss friends on line. She got real excited and said yes, but I had to tell you that she didn't weigh herself. She knew she was over weight. Her DR diagnosed her with lupus and arthritis in her knees. She went to a wheel chair thinking that would save her knees and she wouldn't need her knees operated on. She says the last time her DR told her how much she weighed, she was over 300. The lady put her wheel chair away a few hours a day and watched what she eat. Now she is in a 16, never uses her wheel chair, does her own shopping and walks the grandchildren.

Morning Group -- Palm Sunday today (unless you are an Orthodox Christian -- their Lenten season just started last Sunday -- different calendars). Woke up to a big thunderstorm and pouring rain. The new dog isn't too happy about all the noise. We left him alone for the first time last night while we went to a Beatles music concert. He may have gotten up on the couch, but otherwise he was okay and so excited to see us. He is still keeping the kitties nervous and wary. He walks very nicely on a leash and is eager to get out for our treks around the plantation. He perked up when he saw a squirrel, but didn't try to chase it. Brett used to pull my arm out of the socket to get to a squirrel if he was on a leash. We did borrow a crate for Jeffery, but so far we haven't used it. We are trying to get him ready for our road trip and we don't have room to travel with a crate. I called about in-home dog training -- I could buy ten dogs for the cost of doing that. Guess we will just patiently work on the various habits we would like to eliminate -- jumping up on beds, gobbling his food, trying to get food off the counter. For the most part, he is a darling addition to the family and so loving. He is so full of energy in the mornings and gets the entire household off to a good start. He really is beautiful -- a silky blend of gold and white with some freckles on his nose. Hope you all have a blessed Sunday with quiet times to reflect on the beauty of spring and how great a country we live in. Yesterday our temperatures stayed in the 40s until the latest front came through -- it finally made it up into the 50s after it got dark.

Good morning, I got already for my morning walk and discovered my phone as dead. DH has fits if I walk without my phone, so I guess my walk is postponed till my phone charges. It is over cast so I don't think the heat will be too much of a problem.

I got the book I ordered, American Grace. It is a book about religion in America. It is 530 pages and small print and lots of grafts, but I'm so excited to dig into it.

The other day Mom was worried about the ticks this spring because they had had less then an inch of snow this year. Last night the had 7 inches.

Great thoughts reduced to practice become great acts.
William Hazlitt

Good morning We live out in the country where people think you can dump dogs. A pit bull mix suddenly appeared in our neighborhood. We didn't do anything at first since it might be someones new dog that had gotten loose. The dog was friendly enough, the only problem I had with him is he wanted Mutt to play. It has been two months, the dog is still running loose, no one claims him, but his coat is clean and shiny and he hasn't loss weight. Someone is taking care him. Well some people are ready to call pitt bull rescue. The children were up in arms, NO.

We live on a dead end road and the bus can't turn around so the children walk up to 1/2 mile to the bus stop. I walked down to the bus stop to walk Beka home. The pit bull mix walked beside the group of girls. Two loose boxers ran out towards the girls, the pitt mix started a low growl, never braking stride, just a low growl. he could hardly be heard over the girls chatter. One of the boxers barked at the girls and the growl became louder. The boxers backed off, the girls laughed and the dog walked each girl home. It has been decided we have a neighborhood dog.

Morning Mutt Group -- Our sad/dogless house is now bursting with a spunky collie mix who came last evening to join the four cats. His name is Jeffrey -- he weighs 50 pounds, was a stray that was picked up by animal control in the upstate and then got chosen by a small rescue group than likes to give dogs a second chance. He is about a year old, gold and white in color with a big fluffy tail. He can jump quite well -- we are already having to keep him off the beds and the couch. He and the cats have had a few spats, but he just wants to play. He wants to be with anyone who will pay attention to him. He goes out on the porch with my husband and shadows me around the house. He is very curious and makes "talking sounds" if he wants something. We were up early because he decided he was lonely. Right now he is sleeping on the floor near me as I type. He is just what I need to get outside and walking more. Since Brett had gotten so arthritic, my walking had dropped to just once-in-awhile, short strolls. He has lots of potential to be a therapy dog and even do agility training. I am already looking for help to get him involved in those activities. Since we plan to leave for Nevada in about 3 weeks, we may not train him to the underground fencing yet. We have a fenced side yard that may be enough play space for him. He is very tidy and well-mannered. My main problem is where to feed the cats and how to get them used to him. Two of the cats are in hiding. You will be hearing much more about him. After exploring all the dogs in all the shelters and dog pounds in the area, he seemed to be "the one". Although we really like labradors and labrador mixes, we have had several collies through the years and love their temperment. My spouse wanted a Border collie, but regular collies are much different. Hope your special canines are having a good week. Spring has decided to come into our area with a florish of color and new life. Share your stories and update us on your pets!

Good morning, I'm doing good this morning. two more days on my long week (39) hours then next week 24 hours, but because my days off aren't the same I work 6 days before my next day off. My bank account won't like the fewer hours, but I'll be able to get in my exercise easier. Ot will also mean I can get in my walk in 3 short walks. It is getting too hot to do the long walks. I know some of you are looking for spring, but we have 4 seasons. almost summer, summer.still summer and something else. This year still summer and almost summer ran into each.

Good evening group -- Thought I had posted since Sunday, but I guess I got caught up with the week and didn't get back to the Dog House. Had to run errands on Monday -- was feeling rather "under the weather", so didn't get going too quickly with the day. Yesterday we had our granddaughter all day because her school's administration got to observe "new Pope day" (it is a Catholic school). My husband took care of her while I went to a Board meeting at the health clinic -- she got to go to the bank, to vote in a primary election, and to the hardware store. When I got back home, Lily and I planted all kinds of bulbs in pots (it was too muddy to put them in the ground) and did some raking and rearranging of some of the yard decorations. Spent almost two hours at the dentist office today -- the hygienist was really rough and I can't eat solid food this evening. Feeling shakey today and had hives on my face when I woke up -- may have gotten into something yesterday while I was working in the yard. Full day at the clinic tomorrow. Supposed to get the home visit tomorrow evening of the rescue group's leader and maybe finally get to have the collie-mix dog. We are looking forward to having Jeffery if everything works out well. Lily was excited about a new friend -- she asked if Brett was an "angel" or a "ghost". I said "angel", but we still "see" and "hear" him. When I answer my cell phone from my spouse, Brett's picture pops up. Found a new book when I went to Sam's Club today -- has anyone read or heard about: The Patron Saint of Lost Dogs by Nick Trout? If I get a chance to skim it, I'll post it on our book site. Getting cooler around here -- back to freezing again tomorrow night. Take care/hugs to those mutts!

"Be not afraid of life. Believe that life is worth living, and your belief will help create the fact."

Morning, I woke up this morning with a monster headache. I don't know if it was sinuses, I was stopped up, or dehydrated. I drank 32 oz of water, spent half hour in the bathroom and back to bed for a hour with eucalyptus oil on my shirt. I'm feeling better but very weak. Need to rethink exercise today.

I was reading about some books on line, looking for another book. I told Beka I thought I found one for her. Beka rolled her eyes like a tween does when Grandma thinks she knows what she likes. The description said it best be described as Harry Potter mets Nancy Drew mets Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Beka so wanted it.

Those books are awfully dang noisy when they want to be read.

I have done about an hours worth of housework in two hours. Not too bad. Resting now, because I intend to work a 5 hour shift at the shop. Really bad vertigo last night and this morning, but did the PT necessary to shake the crystals into place and that helped.

Hand still is healing. Buddy is not limping this morning and in fact he was so mad at not being walked the last week he ran straight to the park when I let him out the door.

Good morning. I normally eat breakfast, post to SP, walk the dog then get on with the day. Yesterday Mutt and I both felt the heat, so I decided it was time to eat breakfast, walk the dog, spark and get on with the day. I guess old habits die hard. I eat breakfast, walked the dog, and got on with the day. Totally forgetting I hadn't sparked. Well that and a book that I started yesterday kept calling me.

Get better Cathy

Well I am out of the hospital and on high powered antibiotics. The dog bite story is in my blog. Buddy is still limping, but not getting worse. I am going to take him to vet in morning if I feel strong enough. Hopefully, will get caught up with thread later.

"We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give."
– Sir Winston Churchill

Good morning, The other day Beka and I were looking at a book on ways to save money, one of the ways was to write down all the shows you watch on TV, cross out all that you watch for background noise, cross out all the ones you watch because you always have, cross out all you could watch on the internet, netflicks ect. Are the ones left worth the 500 to 1000 you pay cable or satellite a year? Satellite went out Saturday and the man came to fix it yesterday. Beka and I had turned the TV on to see if it worked, we left it on several hours to make sure, and turned it off as we were both reading. DD came running in what happen, do we need to call the repair man back? Beka looked at him. "There is a button on the top of the TV and if you press it the TV goes off."

Happy St. Patrick's Day! We took a long drive yesterday to see the collie-mix dog that was being fostered. He is very cute and loving, but will need lots of training. He was a stray that spent time in a dog pound and is just getting used to being in a house with other animals and quiet people. We had to fill out a 4 page application form and will have to wait for a home inspection and checking of references. This group is very careful and will reclaim the dog in two weeks if the situation isn't satisfactory. Will have to see how things go. This week I have a dental appointment, a Board meeting at the clinic, a day of watching our granddaughter, work at the clinic, and some spring cleaning. It got into the 70s yesterday, but was windy. Will have to read some of the blog comments to see how everyone is doing. Did get in a walk around the neighborhood yesterday. Don't forget to wear your "green" today!

Good morning. I was off yesterday and was lazy. I don't go in till 2 this afternoon, but then have a 12 hour turnaround. Last week they scheduled me for 24 hours this week 39. crazy.

Beka's mom wanted me to take her back to her after the rodeo. I said no mostly because I didn't want to drive another 50 miles, but when I got home it was a defiant no. She let Beka stay up till 2 or 3 in the morning, sleep till noon, drink 3 and 4 cups of coffee and 3 or 4 cokes a day and I'm suppose to get her rehydrated and ready for school. I told Kellie the Dr said she could have 1 glass of milk, 1 glass of fruit juice, water, herd tea and a g2 NOT regular Gatorade if she got a dehydration headache. Kellie got mad and said she knew all that.

Hello group -- Late posting, but I had to be at a HOSA (Health Occupations Student Association) convention early this morning to judge one of the events. This year I got placed in the medical photography room and judged the students' photographs about various medical professions, including veterinarians. It was very interesting and I hope I get to do it again. Kept me and a nice gentleman (his wife was in charge of the convention) busy for three hours. Did some shopping to see if there was anything new/fun in the stores for Easter. Can't believe that it is only two weeks away. I like it better when Easter is in April because that gives St. Patrick's Day a chance to be celebrated. There is a big parade in Charleston tomorrow. Weather is gradually warming up and it has been windy. So sorry to hear about your dog bite, Cathy. My left leg has finally healed from the cat bite/scratches. It stayed very sore and bruised for about 10 days. Busy at the clinic yesterday -- our last patient came in with a complaint of worms -- she had them in her GI tract and possibly in her lungs. She isn't sure where she picked them up. We were really "grossed out" when she told us that she was coughing them up! People can get worms from pets, but usually it is via a food source to have a case this bad. Hope you have a great week-end and can get outdoors with your pets. I am supposed to see a dog that someone posted on Facebook -- a collie-mix that was saved from a dog pound that is about a year old. He is in a foster home. It is a long process to actually get a dog from this rescue group -- have to show references, have a home visit, provide proof of income, etc. The dog's pictures look really cute. There are a few adoptathons this week-end, too.

"Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great."

Good morning, Yesterday I want to the rodeo with the 4 grandchildren. It was noisy, crowded and so big I kept getting lost. Tony and I petted the llamas, alpacas, cows and horses. Then the noise and crowds got to Tony and that was the end of that. I'm glad I went so I can say I did, but don't think it was worth driving all the way to town. From now on we will stick to the little rodeos in the little towns near here.

Take care of that hand. animal bits are nothing to mess with.

Just copied this off Wednesday's woof

*****Rocco bit me last night when I tried to break up their dog fight. I have a 3 inch laceration about 1/2 inch or more deep on the back of my hand. You could see tendons and bone. Hurt like the dickens. Went to ER. That is going to cost me, but having been bit by students and cats, I know that infection is a risk. My hand is worth the care it got. I can type, but it wears me out quickly and I have not strength in my thumb and three fingers. Have to pull up my jeans with the left hand and pinky finger. I can't write yet. It is funny how dependent you get on your dominant hand. I am going to have to go to the salon to get my hair washed. So, the good news is all that juicing has paid off. The big gaping hole is already filled in and other than severe swelling, I don't seem to have any infection. Nothing like decent vitamins and good food to help the healing process. Oh yes, antibiotics and a good cleaning.

Good morning, I went to bed at 9 last night and DH got me up for breakfast at 7, I'm feeling much better. I don't like crowds, but DD thought that I should go the the rodeo at least once so is taking me today. I think she wants to go and has a 3 year old that needs all her attention and will only want treat it as a big petting zoo. Grandma loves the excited little boys. The excitement is contagious. So I'm guessing I'm spending the day chasing a 3 year old around the animal tents.

Afternoon, I just got home from work.

Last night a manager said she would see me today. I asked what time she was coming in. She said she worked 2 to 11. I told her I worked 9 to 1 so wouldn't see her. She said no I was her closer and worked till 11. No way I was working 9 to 11. She said she only had 1 person in customer service and he worked 9 to 5 so need me to close. Too bad. I got there this morning and another manager asked haw long I was working. I told her 9 to 1. She asked me to work all day. I told her I got off at 11:30 last night and was too tired. Well they put me on a register I couldn't leave till someone relieved me. At 10 after 1 I reminded them I left at 1, they looked surprised and asked if it was 1 yet. At 20 after they said my relief was at lunch and when she got back I could leave. I told them I knew they wanted me to spend the day, but I needed to leave. They found someone at 1:30.

Morning Mutt Lovers -- The sun is shining, so maybe I will get some energy and get some things done today. Did give the healthy eating talk at the free health clinic -- only 5 people came, but that is a start. Had a cute little visitor in the afternoon -- a pug dog came to see us. The neighbor on the far part of the plantation rescues lots of dogs -- he is always in trouble because they get away from him and end up at the pound (which costs lots of money). He has been doing this as long as we have lived here. Several neighbors have also filed noise disturbance complaints against him because he gets dogs that bark. He keeps at least 6-8 dogs all the time. He had a hound dog in the yard when I took the little pug back. Melissa -- sure hope that Jack is okay. We are feeling so lost right now -- not having a dog is like losing a limb or part of your heart. Still looking for a fur-ever friend. May go to some adoptathons this week-end. Some of the purebred dogs have gone up in price to $1,300 per dog. Don't know what would make them that special! They were a type of spaniel. Hug those special mutts and tell them you love them!

Morning Group -- It is pouring down rain. I did get out and do some yard work for awhile yesterday. Thanks so much for your helpful and comforting comments about our dog. It is sorta like the episode after the death of a spouse -- it just happens again when and if the time is right. Found a new book to add to my library that I will share with you: Dog Talk by Harrison Forbes with Beth Adelman. It is "lessons learned from a life with dogs". Can't even remember a time when I haven't had a dog -- they just seemed to flow into my life, one after another. This author trains working dogs. He discusses the rescuing of a multitude of dogs that had been abused and abandoned. I am finding a long list of such dogs as I search the websites -- some of the stories are just heartbreaking. The author is one of this country's leading dog trainers and behaviorists. The book has been around since 2008. It was on a book list in a catalogue that I get in the mail. Hope your week is starting out well. I have been working on a class of teaching healthy living to our patients at the free health clinic. Today is the first class. So many of our patients have complications from their diseases due to being overweight and inactive. We want to pair the classes with some exercise groups.

Ranger is a border collie mix. He is good with both cats and children:) You just need to wait. The right dog will show up.

In the light of darkness I'll find my way
I've shed my sorrow, at least for today
I have never felt so strong
Life is rushing through my veins
With my heart and mind aligned
I can stand the test of time
I have never felt so proud
Of what I feel and who I am
When life brings me to my knees
Nothing will ever get me down

"Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence."

Good morning, Work kicked my tush yesterday and I slept late this morning. A manager wanted me to work 4 more hours, when I pointed out I had already put in 8 hours she said so, I told her I was already scheduled for my max hours for the week. She said so I won't be here friday that is someone else's problem. I didn't stay, I probably lost brownie points, I try to do my part, but this is getting ridicules.

Lennie, when I moved into the area 5 years ago, most of the dogs were mean, bred to be guard dogs or fight. When a child would see me walking my dog and act surprised he walked beside me without pulling or cutting up they would ask abut him and I would let them pet him. When parents came to the door they would freak. One day a man graded a child. I was walking by and my dog had a fit. Turns out it was the child's father getting a child that had wondered off, but they saw that a sweet dog would protect a child. Now they want dogs like mine.

Morning group -- So good to see the sunshine, even if it is being filtered through lots of smoke. Don't know if they are burning in the forest (usual spring cleanup process called "prescribed burning" or if someone's yard burning project got out of control). The time change always throws me for a loop -- I got up two hours early (less than 5 hours sleep) yesterday and was a zombie all day. Didn't get much done. Cathy -- we love bassett hounds and my brother in Hawaii has always had one since we were kids (they aren't too easy to find on the big island, but he imported one). My husband and I are big dog people -- nothing under 70 pounds, so our next friend will be in that category, also. As I said, I have looked on nine different websites and most of the mixes are pit bulls. I like "bullies" if they are cared for, but we live in an area where they are bred to fight and be guard dogs and to be tough. They have usually been abused/neglected by the time they find their way to a shelter. We live in a neighborhood with lots of rules and that includes no fences over a certain height. That is why we got the underground fencing system (which many dog lovers do not approve of). The dogs around us are a hound/rotties/a Siberian Husky/doxies. I e-mailed our friend that raises Goldens and Kuvas -- she is looking for a dog for us because they also take in strays. One neighbor behind us rescues pugs and chows and bull dogs. My husband still says he wants a border collie mix, but they tend to be hyper and don't like to follow rules -- they are fast enough to escape the fencing system. My DH will be 70 years old in a few weeks -- he loves dogs, but I am the one that cares for them and trains them. We have had labradors and lab mixes for the last 25 years, with a spaniel mix and a chow mix thrown in. I do pet therapy in schools and in elderly care homes, so the dog has to be calm and patient. Brett did not do therapy -- he had been abused by children and perhaps by a man who didn't like a dog to eat table food -- he would never take any type of food by hand. The therapy dogs that I work with are getting old and the rescue group doesn't take in dogs anymore -- they focus mainly on cats. Our next companion has to be good with cats since we always have 4-6 of them (border collies tend to not be good with cats). So, I am continuing my search -- I feel that Brett will send a dog that he would have approved of -- I have really been looking for a therapy dog for the past year or so. Have a wonderful Monday -- do something nice for you and your dog buddies!

A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle.

- Erin Majors

Good morning, When I told them I would work yesterday, getting off at 10:30, I forgot that this was the day the time charges. So I have a 9 hour turn around. Oh well I'm on the register. That means I can do a lot by rote and not have to think as much or less explaining laws to customers. Folks when customer service tells you they can only do so much because of a law, asking for a manger won't help. The manager can't change laws any more than I can.

Cathy, When I went to the pound to get a dog, I told them I wanted a 4 year old 45 pound dog, house broken and could walk on a leash. I found Mutt, a 50 pound 2 year old that wasn't finished growing, never been in a house or had a collar on. He made it very plain that if I chose him he would do anything to please me. OK he couldn't stop growing. It took me 1 weekend to train him.

Basset Hounds are stinky and stubborn, but they have the lowest bite rate and are one of the most social dog breeds ever. Please be sure to check out Basset rescue places. People dump them because they require so much bathing and cleaning and doctor visits. Although if I was older and in a chair, I would either want the dog big enough to put his head in my lap or small enough to curl up in my lap, so maybe Bassets make better reading dogs for school age children.

The right dog will find you.

Wear a smile and have friends; wear a scowl and have wrinkles.

- George Eliot

Good morning, this is the day I was going to be off, but was asked to work.We are going for a high in the mid 70's today, above normal. Good for Kellie.

I took Beka over to one of her mothers family friends house so she could spend the weekend with her mother. The friend has a good job and wanted Kellie to keep busy, so when Beka told him about all the plants her mother had on the breezeway at the apt, he took Kellie to a nursery and told her his front yard needed landscaped and he would like some fresh veggies. When I took Beka over yesterday, Kellie was so excited, She showed off her veggie garden in the back yard and the two flower gardens she was putting in the front yard. Kellie looked and sounded so much better.

I read a book "Corporate Capitalism" as he says that is not an oxie moron, anyway he says employees should be your most valuable natural resource. I'm 99% sure no one at Wal-Mart ever read that book.

Afternoon group -- Another frustrating day, but it hasn't been a good week overall. Taking a feral cat into the vet to get immunizations after our rabies scare -- he has been with us about four months. Hope I can get him into a cat carrier. He is a nice housecat, but is always the first one up. We have four cats, counting him now. I can't live without a dog -- my entire life has been built around my dogs. I have looked at about 100 dogs on the online websites for our area shelters. At least 90% of them are pitbull mixes. I have wanted a therapy dog for the last year because I do pet therapy with a group that goes to nursing homes and assisted living places. So many of the dogs that are on the websites say that they aren't good with children or cats -- they must be good with them to come to our house. Some of the nursing homes want the pet therapy dogs to be certified through an animal trainer. I also was doing pet therapy in the local schools, but just to help with the ice cream parties. Those dogs also have to be certified. So, I am praying that I can find one with all of the above criteria. They also have to like traveling, since we do two cross-country drives a year and shorter trips to Florida and North Carolina. I had tried to get a tetanus shot at my doctor's office this morning since I can't find the date of my last booster. The office was closed due to some family emergency with a staff member. I thought I could find the date of my last shot, but just can't locate where or when I had it. Cool today, but sunny and not so windy. Mary Alice, sure feel bad that you are hurting -- my cat bite is about a 6 inch diameter bruise now on my calf and quite tender. Walmart needs to be nice to its workers -- there have been complaints that show up in the news about their various personnel policies. Don't forget to change your clocks on Saturday night -- "spring forward" an hour so Sunday won't be messed up! There has been lots of debate about whether the time change is really helpful or cost effective (it was originally done to help the farmers, if I am correct). Have a great week-end and spend time with your pets. This time last week, my granddaughter and I were taking Brett for a walk down to the pond and to visit the rescue horses. We haven't told her that he is gone.

A house is no home unless it contains food and fire for the mind as well as for the body. For human beings are not so constituted that they can live without expansion. If they do not get it in one way, they must in another, or perish

Good morning. I'm off again today. My hand is still a little swollen but I have knuckles. It gets me what bothers me. I can pick up things, lift heavy things, but it bothers me to use my mouse or put my hand in my pocket.

I had to laugh at Wal-Mart. They made a big deal about if they gave me the hours the manager asked for it this week would give me 32.5 hours 1/2 our more then allowed. I just got me schedule for the following week and the computer has given me 39 hours. If the manager on the floor ask the hours limit is 32, it the computer ask for the yours the limit is 40.

Lennie, I am so sorry you have lost so many fur loved ones in such a short span. Hopefully, the dogs are reunited over the rainbow bridge. Are you petless now or do you still have a couple of cats? My guess is a puppy will find it's way to you soon. Not that you want one, but that is how I ended up with Buddy. I didn't want another dog, but walked the shelter dogs for my dog fix.

Mary Alice. Glad the hand is healing. I would boycott Walmart due to shoddy business practices, but you aren't my only friend who works there and needs the job.

It is not enough if you are busy. The question is, ‘What are you busy about?’
Henry David Thoreau

Good morning, I'm off today, so will spend time resting, letting my hand heal, and grocery shopping, I have my food and DH's food but am running out of Beka food.

Wal-Mart is back on it's time thing. The computer had been scheduling me for 34 to 36 hours a week and suddenly dropped it down to 24 hours a week. I was off Saturday, but they asked me to come in 2 to 11. Well last night I asked about clocking in since the time clock won't let you clock in if you aren't scheduled. A Zone manager said she would put me on the schedule. She came back and said she couldn't put me on for 2 to 11 because that will put me over 32 hours, so put me on the schedule for 2 to 10:30. If they are sticking to the 32 hours and I'm scheduled for 32 hours, that means Friday they will send me home early for every min I clock in early, come back form lunch early or stay late. They do this every once in a while.

my condolences. It is hard to lose a furbaby:(

In the light of darkness I'll find my way
I've shed my sorrow, at least for today
I have never felt so strong
Life is rushing through my veins
With my heart and mind aligned
I can stand the test of time
I have never felt so proud
Of what I feel and who I am

Morning Group -- With great sadness, I am reporting on the death of our special dog, Brett. He was a rescue from the SPCA and we didn't really know his age -- he was probably 2 years older than the facility told us. We've had him for 10 years. As a labrador/spaniel mix, that is the usual lifespan for the breeds. Yesterday while my DH was walking him down to the pond, Brett's back leg gave out on him and we had to coax him home. I have had to give him medication for his worsening arthritis in his hips for several months. A friend came by this morning and helped my DH get Brett into our van. He had a ruptured disc in his back. I knew when he left that he wouldn't be coming home. He was overweight, mainly because he and his dog buddy Milo liked to eat more than they liked to exercise. He has been missing Milo very much, so I have to believe that they are together again. Meanwhile, I haven't heard from the Health Dept. regarding whether I have to do rabies vaccine treatments due to the stray cat's attack last week. It takes 48 hours and we don't know when the cat was put down. So, in two weeks we have lost our favorite cat, Betsy (she went outside as usual and just disappeared), our porch dog Milo, the stray cat (Tuffy), and now Brett. As I said in my last posting, sometimes we get involved too deeply in matters that maybe should be someone else's concern -- I should have taken the stray cat in to the SPCA a few months ago. Hug your precious pets and love them as much as you can. We have a big hole in our hearts right now and only the wonderful memories can help us heal the void.

Everyone is trying to accomplish something big, not realizing that life is made up of little things.

Good morning. I get off at 9 tonight, but my guess they don't have a closer, so I'll end up closing customer service at 9, cleaning and hopefully out of there before 10, well I would have to be, I'll time out. At least it is a short day.

My hand is better, it looks worse, all discovered, but the swelling is down and I can use it more.

Good morning, I go in at 10:30 this morning. Wal-Marts week starts on Sat. We they gave me the last 2 days off this week, Thursday and Friday, and the first day of next week, Saturday. I had 3 days in a row off. Well I knew it was two good to last. They had given me 3 days off next week, and only 26 hours. Well that is what the computer wanted, but management decided they needed more so they asked if I would come in Saturday. I would have liked 3 days off, but my bank account says otherwise., so I'm going in.

I lived in Fl for 30 years, some people thing that the oceans are going to rise and cover FL. I think FL is going to sink and there will be just islands. They are pumping water out of the ground so fast that the ground is sinking, not just sink holes, but the ground in general There are places where the older fire hydrants are 5 or 6 feet off the ground.

Hello Group! A breezy, cool afternoon in our part of the country. Very sad situation with the kitty that I have been helping for the last six months or so. I should have taken it to the vet. when it came with injuries about five weeks ago -- it let me clean its wounds and I was saving up some money to get it into the vet. for a check-up, neutering, and shots. It has never been too friendly, but one of our cats seemed to enjoy its company. Last week, it bit me twice -- once in each calf muscle of my legs. I had not even been interacting with the cat -- it came up behind me as I was in the garage each time. It also viciously went after another cat that I've been caring for that came from a feral colony. It dawned on me that the injuries could have been inflicted by a wild animal since the cat comes to us via the woods. Animal control came this morning to impound the cat and destroy it -- they will let me know within 48 hours if it has rabies (only detected via an autopsy of the brain). It was a beautiful cat and I really felt that it belonged to someone because I wouldn't see it every day and it had been socialized. Lesson number one: rabies never goes away and the only protection for people is that any domestic animal get regular injections. Lesson number two: don't give an animal too many chances if it has a sudden change in disposition or behavior. Lesson number three: sometimes you can't save things, even if your heart is in the right place. I should have called animal control when I saw that the cat was injured. They would have cared for it and tried to find it a home if it was adoptable. If the cat has rabies, I will also lose the feral kitty that I rescued since I don't know how long ago he might have been immunized. As my hubby said -- these are not my problems and the consequences are quite severe. My legs are healing, even though they are still painful. So sorry to hear about your hand injury, Mary Alice -- hope the injury will heal with some rest. Besides animal situations, now we have to worry about sink holes (at least in Florida) and flying heavenly debris (the incident in Russia) and cutbacks on various federal jobs and protection. Wishing you a safe week, a healthy week, and special times with your pets!

O God, animate us to cheerfulness! May we have a joyful sense of our blessings, learn to look on the bright circumstances of our lot, and maintain a perpetual contentedness
William Ellery Channing

Good morning, I didn't fall of the face of the earth. Sunday I fell while walking Mutt and landed on I broke a couple blood vassals. Nothing serious, but made me hand swell bad and typing was out of the question. I was at work 2 hours when I told one of the managers that I couldn't lift totes and could they find someone to help me, they hadn't noticed that I had a bad hand. Two Asst. managers were standing near by and freaked that I had hurt myself at work, when I said no, if I had hurt myself at work I would have been beating an their door. They walked away. Last night one person asked if my hand was better, so after working 8 hours, my hand swollen again and hurting, the 2 Asst Managers started after me that I really should volunteer to stay and help sort returns, I had no problem saying NO.

Lennie, Sorry about the cat bite. My cat attacked me that way and was awful. I was sick for several days even though the docs put me on antibiotics. Later the food/poison/china scandal emerged. Basically, I was poisoning the poor thing and she was going crazy. I think she lost about four years of her life although she straightened out when we switched foods. Wonder if your stray cat got into bad food or anti-freeze.

The party was wonderful. Although by the end, I was so ready to leave. It was noisy, dark and crowded. The vertigo really kicked off and I needed some fresh air even if it was in an upscale restaurant in an elite part of Portland. It was at Henry's near Powell's bookstore and 23rd. I am not sure the last time you were in Portland, but it is a renewed area. Caters to the NW hill crowd with the big houses and fancy cars. Ursela LeGuin lived/lives in that area.

Carrole was surprised. I saw a lot of former co-workers. I got to ride up there and back with my closest friend from work. We had dinner afterward. Neither of us ate before going and the appetizers at the party were all carbs, so we just nibbled on a couple of those. Did have a piece of the best chocolate brownie mousse I had ever tasted. We drove into St. Helens for dinner and stopped at a Mexican Chain. I managed to bring half of my meal home and also lost another pound this morning. I ate a fourth of that meal for breakfast and now need to go get more veggies for juicing.

I like your animal mission. Still you might consider your Hubby. He is probably just trying to protect you. I have been overwhelmed by other peoples pets at times because I felt responsible for loved one's bad decisions.

Morning Group -- The sun is shining, so that is a positive sign! It is in the 30s to start the day. Cathy -- people in the South deep-fry anything you can imagine. Some of the regular items are ice cream, pickles, Twinkies, Ho-Hos, mushrooms, tomatoes, pound cake, squash, various meats, Oreos, and different types of pie. Mainly the item has to be coated with a "dip" so the outside is crisped (bread crumbs, flour, etc.). The various county fairs sell out of these foods. Right now in our area, it is oyster roast season--the oysters are scraped off the rocks with big shovels and loaded into open trucks. The "roasting" is really just using an open flame to open up the mollusks and they are then eaten raw (you can use various sauces). These events are big money-makers for charities. It is a smelly affair and you have to develop a taste for them -- they are salty and slimey. If you don't like seafood, there are always hot dogs, chips, and sometimes fish. Right now I am limping because I was attacked by the cat that comes twice a day to hang-out with my outside kitties. He is a beautiful animal, but he has become very mean (ill, abused, frustrated??). He has bitten me twice this week in mad dashes where he grabs my legs and bites/scratches as if I am a foe. I have no idea who he belongs to or if he has had any immunizations. He has been coming and going for at least seven months. Now I have to turn him into the SPCA to see if he might be rabid. We are surrounded by woods and of course there are lots of wild animals. Our favorite cat disappeared about 2 1/2 weeks ago -- we had her 13 years. She was an indoor/outdoor cat when we got her from the rescue group that I help. We miss her a lot and spend time daily looking for her. I went to pet therapy yesterday with the group -- we entertained some seniors with three cats and the two elderly dogs. My DH says that I need to stop saving critters because things are getting "out of hand"! Hope you had a great Saturday and have some good stories to tell -- let us know how you are doing and if there are foods that tempt you on week-ends. The latest reports say that we need moderation in all things -- less fat, less sugar, less carbs. in concentrated forms. Can't beat veggies and fruits, even if there aren't too many in season right now (Florida is getting very low temps. also).

Fried Pie???? Visualizing that makes my stomach hurt. I went to the dog races once. That was enough. I have not visited the newer coliseum and don't have any desire to either. It just takes so much energy to cope with crowds when we are not feeling well to begin with. However, I do want to ride the tram up the hill to the hospital one of these days. That could be fun and a short experience despite the crowds.

Mean green consists of Kale, celery, apples, lemon, ginger, cucumbers. Juicing takes out all the fiber, which is upsetting to stomachs. I find it very easy to digest and so nutrient packed I feel better after a few days of juicing.

Smoothies are great if you need the fiber, but they aren't as nutrient dense either.

Here is a great article on juicing. I like that he promotes eating with the juicing too. Seems more balanced. I don't juice fast anyway. I just supplement with it.

"If we don't change, we don't grow. If we don't grow, we are not really living. Growth demands a temporary surrender of security."
– Gail Sheehy

Good morning, I'm sick and tired of being of being sick and tired. well I'm not sick, but my whole body aches.

I told DD that I lived near Houston for 23 years and never been to the Live stock show and Rodeo, so maybe I should go. DD said that I would't like the crowds, even at slow times the crowds at more then I'd be happy with and there isn't anything I could eat. Since I can't eat anything that comes from an animal that didn't surprise me, after all I didn't think they BBQed eggplant. Then DD said oh wait they have deep fat fried cream cheese pie, and they say it is healthy, they put strawberries on it.

Welcome to the week-end! Hope some of your activities include some exercise. Thanks for the input, Cathy, on the juice addition. As someone with severe stomach/digestive problems, I can't do juices or smoothies or anything with milk. So, I just drink water and a small amount of watered-down coffee to get going. I can't eat many raw veggies, either. My diet is really bland and nothing anyone would want to try. If something causes problems, I stay away from it for awhile. I am in awe of people who can eat onions, green peppers, cucumbers, chilis, and large quantities of fruit. It has been years since I could enjoy Mexican food or barbeque or eating from a salad bar. Going on crash diets when I was in my 20s caused most of the damage. Having reflux problems and a hiatal hernia and a bowel disorder have made it a chronic situation. There aren't any pills to help anymore. I am thankful that I can eat eggs, chicken, two types of fish, cooked veggies, and small amounts of some fresh fruits.

I like to change up my plans and activities. So have belonged to a lot of weight loss groups and tried many diets. Currently, I like supplementing with the Mean Green from Reboot. Juicing gets lots of nutrients down me.

Hello again! I volunteered to teach a weight reduction class at the clinic. Besides all the wonderful information that is available on SparkPeople, do any of you use a certain program or book to get started on reducing? So many of our patients at the clinic have diabetes and heart problems -- being on an American Diabetes Assn. diet is very healthy. Due to the need to have simple "carbs", it is easy to follow the listings and try to avoid sugars and fats. It was the diet I used in high school when I needed to lose 50 pounds. I stuck to a 1200-1500 calorie diet for almost two years. Fearing the consequences of becoming diabetic is enough to get people to listen. Many people successfully manage their weight and their diabetes just by adhering to a strict diet. Staying away from "the white foods" is a great way to get in the habit -- no white rice, no white flour, limited white potatoes, no deep-fried items. I am trying to find a good way to introduce healthy eating to people who have lived most of their lives on fried foods and fast food. If you know Southern cooking, it means having foods cooked in bacon or bacon grease (even vegetables), syrupy sweet tea, cakes with gooey icing, etc. Maybe going back to what was some comedian's motto would help: "If it tastes good, it can't be good for you"! We are trying to change lifestyles and avoid short lifespans. Two of our patients in their early 40s have had heart attacks this year.

Humans and dogs first crossed paths more than ten thousand years ago. Dogs share our lives more completely than does any other animal. Since their domestication, dogs have accompanied and served us in many ways.
