I will just jump in here! I'm Annie, and at 54 (just turned!) I have a 12 1/2 year old son and 10 year old daughter. I live in an area where most women have their first in their early 20s, so I am often mistaken for their grandmother since I gained weight. Boo. Gonna change that, though!

My kids are both extremely active and healthy, thank goodness. They are adopted, so I really don't know what kind of health challenges they might have inherited. My son rides his bike like he's in a race..so fast! He is also in Civil Air Patrol, so they have monthly fitness tests, so he really puts his heart into his daily PE at school so he can beat the other cadets! My daughter takes dance and gymnastics, and cartwheels her way through life. I was a dancer all my life, until just a few years ago when my back and knee both revolted. Add a divorce and stressful job, and I am up 50 pounds from where I was when I turned 50! I was used to being mistaken for someone a decade younger, but 50 pounds sure changed that.

So glad to meet all of you!

I'm 47. I had my first when I was 31 (she's 16 now) and my second when I was one month short of 36. He's 11.

My older daughter is very much into being healthy, although recently, like me, she's fallen off the wagon a little. She does use our elliptical machine, but has cut back on the workouts. Just as well. I was worried she getting obsessed with it, you know?

As for my son, he'll go out on his bike once in a while. Unfortunately, his one friend in the neighborhood isn't around all that much, so he stays inside and hangs out with is friend from Hawaii on the computer. At least in school they have the kids run a mile once a week and do other fitness things (yay), and he either seems to have a) lost a little weight or b) grown an inch or so, OR c) both! My daughter was a little pudgy at his age until she started her growth spurt and decided to not get junk food at the food trucks that linger near the schools.

I could kill those food trucks. All they serve is junk food. I get that kids love that stuff, and they get ravenous in Middle School, but jeez.

I'm 42 years old (43 next month) with a 14 year old daughter and a 9 year old son. Both very healthy and active (competitive soccer). We've discussed nutrition and health from the time they were babies so they are both very aware. I just need to put into practice what I know.

I just turned 40 this year and have very active boys that are 9 & 6. Also adopted this year a very active puppy. All three help me stay active, and had lost over 20lbs, but now have it the weight I have been for years and just can't seem to get past it.

I think I have you all beat. I am 57 with an almost 11 year old son! I adopted late in life after retiring from a long career as a dancer. Needless to say, I was always in great shape. Now I sit at a computer all day, am taking college courses at night to finish my degree and trying to take care of my son, who is visually impaired. Lately, I think I have become an emotional eater to fill the nights after my son has gone to bed. I feel like I'm rewarding myself for getting through the day, but now I need to lose 25 lbs. I always looked a lot younger than my age, and I want to get that back, as well as get healthier (my cholesterol is a bit high)

Hi there,
I'm 48 with 2 sons (8 and 11 years old). I've always been pretty active (walk to work, etc), but started exercising at home with DVDs a few months ago. Amazing the results to my energy level. We did a couple of up-hill hikes over the last couple of weekends and I kept up with the boys and their dad the whole time (huge accomplishment). No more "wait for mommy" comments!!
Yah!
Marg.
PS: I'm finding the exercising has toned things up too, so if you change your mind, this might help with toning and dealing with loose skin.

I did not even meet my DH until I was in my thirties. I had my son at 36yo and my daughter at 38yo. I am now 45yo with my 9yo and 7yo. Time flies when you getting older! LOL!

I think the hanging or stretch skin is partly do due quick loss as opposed to gradually loss. And I do believe genetics plays a role with "pliable" skin. And yes a little to do with age. But such is life. I don't need to look good up against the 20 yo just good enough with the other 40 year olds. Having a girl makes me realize I have to remind her health, confidence, etc is much more important than what the magazines say.

Being a healthy weight is half the battle, exercising is part of it too. But again genetics plays a role with heart and any family history of diseases.

As for being among the oldest mom in the school district...yep I am, but most don't realize it unless they flat out ask...then I don't lie and let them know.

BTW: I am part of the Fabulous forties team...you may want to look into that as well.

I'm 43 with 12 and 10 year old sons and a soon-to-be 8 year old daughter. They are blessed with normal body weights, but are not nearly active enough. I'd like to be a better example for them, which is tough after sitting behind a desk for 8 hours. I feel so drained after work and even though I know that if I exercise I'll have more energy I'm so tired! My new motto is "walking tired is better than not walking at all."

Hi. I'm 44 yrs old and have 15 (5'8", 250lbs) and 7 (4'7", 110lbs) yr old girls. The 7 yr old seems to be trying to get as big as sis as soon as she can. She gets home from school and is eating nonstop until bed time. Good thing that's only 2.5 hours. I think the older one is just not active enough. Her eating seems to be better these days but she spends hours in the chair doing school work (thank goodness) but no exercise. Got any ideas on how to rein in these girls and show them healthier ways to do things? I'm trying to work on mine to model some good habits but I just started 6 weeks ago and am not really a pro at it myself yet.

I just joined the 40 group 2 weeks ago. I have always felt young and looked even younger but I tell you what, to remind me of the difference, my right hip won't stop whining, my bunion is throbbing after running YESTERDAY! and I have decided to just let the gray come on in!
I have 4 kids that I'm homeschooling, ages 9, 7, 6 & 4. I noticed last year that my oldest put on a little belly weight from lack of activity or p.e. time so I decided that would be front and center in our daily schedule. So everyday, we strap on our helmets and bike to the park (less than 1 mi. from home). So while they take turns reading aloud with me, the others run and jump and climb and bike while I sip my coffee and wake up. That and I am really trying to jog. I joined WW & went to a personal trainer a couple of years ago and lost all my baby weight!! One thing I took from time with the trainer (a first for me!) was to scrap everything and run. So I don't work out near as hard as I used to but exercising helps me have a little more flex in my eating, so I feel like it's well worth the effort. Hang in there Momma! There is still life, GOOD LIFE after 40!

Hats off to you!!! Then again, I may be just as crazy as I would love to adopt a child to add to my family even at my ''age''. One day at a time. Kids are a huge influence I have found having three boys ages 7 and under. I want to be able to keep up with them as they really do take a lot of energy.

I'm Sue, I just turned 40 this January and I have a 7 year old and an almost 9 year old. 40 as a number has not bothered me, my husband and sisters and some friends are older than me, but I am starting to realize that there's no "going back", if I want to get healthier and fitter, now is a good time, it's not going to get easier... So I'm back...

Definately congrats on twins at 45. I had mine almost 5 years ago at 36 and that was a tail spin for me. I chuckled when I read your comment that said you havent been asked if your the mom. Not that I have been asked that question either, but just a few months back my oldest who is going into 2nd grade was nice enough to ask me why I was so much older then his friends mom. Granted I'm not one to go back to the ''young style'' of clothing but it would be great to volunteer at the school and feel good in those jeans :-)

Hey Brenda, Kudos to you for surviving a pg with twins at 45! My singleton at 40 was no picnic. However, a lot of my difficulty during that pg could be due to the fact that I was overweight when I started out and naturally gained plenty more during the pg.

I can't say that I like being asked "if I'm the mom..." to my kids. But the fact is that I have many friends my age who had their kids young and are now grandmothers. I know one person who was a grandmother at 36! Also, today many grandmothers are the primary caregivers to their grandkids, so I can understand why people ask me that.

I'm told I don't look my age, and I hope that is true. I wonder if losing the weight will make me look younger or older. I've seen both effects on different people. For some, it's like the weight "fills in the wrinkes" and they look older when they are thin. I hope that is not the case when I reach goal - which is quite a ways away.

Thanks for your response.

I was 45 when I had my twins, that was 7 years ago. I don't really look my age but I do get asked sometimes if I am the Mom. Meaning, " you might be the Grandmom, I am not sure" so I just deal with it and take it in stride. It has become very important to me to lose the excess weight and stay as healthy as I can for as long as I can to be there for my boys.

Life is good, and is getting better....

I am 43 with a 10 year old, 8 year old and 10 month old. I live in an area where getting married and having kids young is the norm so I am clearly and older parent at my elementary school. But I have a friend whose husband is 58 with 8 year old twins. Thank God for them to give me some perspective on the older parent thing!

I'm 40 and my youngest is 9. My oldest is 18 and I have a 14 yr-old in the middle.
I believe that the ST will help firm those lose areas.
I have to admit that I was genuinely concerned about my abs, but I know it's going to take longer because it's the first area where I gain.
Oh well!
I'm NOT giving up regardless of the outcome because I can't afford to give up. It's like the "What if?" factor we all ask ourselves.

I asked this same question on the Parents of Preschoolers Team. Sorry if you get the message twice. I realize my chances of finding other 40 somethings are probably better here than over on that team.

For some reason today, I'm really thinking about my age (45). I'm feeling odd as an older parent. And with regards to weight loss, I'm wondering how I will feel at goal weight. I got down to goal weight at 2001 and felt amazing. But that was 11 years ago. When I make goal weight this time, I'll be nearing 50. How will that affect the way I feel and look as a thin person? Will I have excess skin to deal with? Will losing the weight make a difference in how long I live to enjoy my children (and hopefully grandchildren)? Or will my genetic pre-disposition to heart disease trump the work I do and kill me young anyway?

Morbid, I know. And it's not even my birthday. LOL.
