Well I hope you all had a spooky Halloween! Ours was fun, albeit VERY WET! Billy was a magician and his hat and cape helped keep the rain off. We were under the impression that the stores were going to give candy out at 6PM, but it turned out that it started at 4, so a lot of the shops were out of candy. But plenty still had some, and Billy got more than he could eat! His prize was the candy apple that one of the candy stores gave out. He was thrilled. It rained all day/night, at times it would ease up. The street was packed, babies in strollers, lots of umbrellas, just crazy! But it was still fun, a Halloween to remember. I loved seeing so many costumes. I definitely got in my exercise this weekend, walking all around Gatlinburg and doing stuff in Pigeon Forge. The trees are a little past peak, but there is still plenty of color to ooh and ahh at. A great time and we all said we'd do it again!

I'm changing the subject to Halloween. Got about 75 trick-or-treaters despite rain (yuk...but at least it wasn't cold). I was fine with not eating the candy until last night, when I planned for one (large) candy bar, but tonight I started snacking on those little minis (which I don't even LIKE that much!) and am still foraging around in my kid's bag to see what looks good. I'm not over calories but I also didn't think I was going to eat that junk...oh well.

That 2-year-below-grade-level policy is ridiculous! Apparently your school district isn't aware that there are many children who are got GT (gifted/talented) and LD!

I am hearing all of your frustrations with this! My daughter just got tested for dyslexia last week and we are still pending the results of this. She's in 2nd grade and tested above average in math which is great! She was having the same issues with reading (barely on a 1st grade level) and the school actually tried to tell me that she DIDN'T have a problem. I have since pulled her out and have been homeschooling her for the past 2 months and she is reading on a 1st grade level and ACTUALLY enjoying it.

Boy do I agree there. The sad part with Mikayla is she could have been tested earlier and if I had found out and put the interventions in place she wouldn't be having the problem now. That is why I am so frustrated.

Where I live, the child must test in class at least 2 grade levels below where he/she should be by age before an LD assessment can be called for. That is awful, because then no child can be tested until 2nd grade or later. So much time wasted that could have been spent with stronger interventions/accommodations.

I too battle with the school my daughter is in as well and it gets frustrating. I had to go outside of the school to get my daughter assessed for dyslexia to get them to get on the ball and do something there. Come to find out she is dyslexic and now trying to get them to adjust her IEP plan. It's well worth it to get the school to help you out and would start with the counselor for the help. I have been worried about my daughter since kindergarten and talked to the school till I was blue in the face and no one seemed to listen. Now this year her reading has fallen way behind the rest of the students to the serious side and now their having to jump on the ball and get her some help. Makes me so mad at the school for dragging their feet but I just want to make sure my daughter gets the help she needs. While doing all of this I have battled with the other one having swine flu but luckily the other two have gotten by without getting it.

The costume party was FUN, if a bit childish. I think everyone had a costume - one family (adult child) came as Dorothy, the wicked witch of the East, and dad as a flying green monkey - definitely a lot of effort into the monkey costume! One balloon boy with a sign "Reality TV show wanted" and a LOT of pirates! I had a good time but they held the party in their garage and it was a bit cramped...guess I'm getting old...passed on the jello shots, too.

Girls are decorating the house for Halloween as I type - fake blood is made, bags are going to get filled (yes, I still give out bags, and *good* candy - I know some of the neighborhood kids come twice to the house lol!), and most decorations are up. But it might rain tomorrow - BUMMER!

Not sure about your public schools, and, honestly, this policy might be different from college to college, but at the one I teach at if we don't have documentation we can't provide accomodations. It's a fairness issue - if a student requests double time on an exam without documentation, why should I give it to him/her? I'd have to give it to the whole class to be fair. Same goes for extra notes and lots of other 'extras'. Either the whole class gets it or none. Of course, we're not THAT draconian - if someone wants to sit at the front of the room for some reason I'm not going to make them move back...but I should say that if I have a reason to ask someone to sit in the back and they disagree I'd need a good reason to change my mind. We really do have little 'kingdoms' in some ways. For example I've seen students complain that they've been asked to work in a group with someone they don't want to (because it's a woman, for example, and their culture doesn't speak with women) and we struggle with that as a public institution because we stress equality and fairness and welcome diversity in groups...anyway, you see I can go on all night about this.

Bottom line: yeah, I BET the school doesn't want to bear the cost. If they're giving you what you want right now you might be okay with it, but you may wind up paying (one way or another) anyway in a few years.

I haven't had much time for posting lately, but it was nice to log in today and read what everyone is up to and dealing with. I have been struggling with trying to decide whether to have my 12 year old son tested for learning disabilities in math. In our district the cost falls on the school, so I think they tend to discourage parents. The faculty at the middle school he attends is very helpful about giving him extra time on tests and extra help as needed, but I am worried about what will happen when he goes to high school and college. I am pushing to get the testing rolling just so I can see whether there really is an identifiable problem or not.

We are also very excited about Halloween here. The little girls have been wearing dress-up costumes all week long and can't wait for the trick-or-treating. We only have lollipops in our house for trick-or-treaters, so I am not tempted at all by them. The girls will have fun with the collecting the candy part and then we'll let them trade out for a new book. My older guys are too big for trick-or-treating so they'll very willingly help with all the treats!

Happy Halloween to all!

Kim

I understand the struggles with the schools... I fought to get my son on an IEP. When we moved here, they took him off the IEP. So frustrating!!

Luckily, I went to his teacher this year and explained his whole situation to her. She gave me some great ideas on how to help him with where he's at right now. She's also been willing to help him in class. We're not giving him excuses, but a little extra help.

After discussing all of the issues with his teacher, and a game plan for where he's at, We're hoping that by the end of the year, he'll actually be ready to go off the IEP, that Texas took him off of two years ago.

LOL! That reminds me, when my 8YO was younger he had a strange habit of lining all his candy out side by side...it would stretch all the way across the family room! He would then arrange them according to size, and would have a fit if anyone would disturb it. So strange (maybe a little OCD?)!
If I see Dolly I'll tell her hi for ya! Heehee :)
I remember going to Dollywood back when it was Silver Dollar City. Any other ol' timers out there?

With my kids it's the SORTING of the candy that's the most fun.

Say 'hi' to Dolly for us! G'burg should be fun for Halloween.

A cabin in the fall colors - oooh, delicious! Have a great time. My sons are like yours - it's the getting of the candy, not the eating of it, that is the most fun. I hope everyone has a great week!!!

Well we are doing something different this year for Halloween, we are going away to Gatlinburg, TN. We have always let the kids Trick or Treat in the neighborhood before, so this will be a new adventure. We spoke to several people in Gatlinburg (the COC and the Travel Bureau) and they reassured us the all the shops give candy out. So Billy should have LOTS of candy this year! He eats some of it, but he really enjoys getting the candy more than the eating. We love fall and are longing to see more color, although we do get pretty color here in GA. We're renting a cabin in the mountains away from the hubbub...can't wait!!!!! emoticon emoticon

Good morning all and having a slow start to my day. I got kids report cards Thursday and had them home with me Friday which was an adventure. I have gotten the ball rolling on getting MIkayla the help she needs and even her teacher this year is seeing what I am talking about. They have let her slide on her reading from year to year being just a little behind to where it is now adding up and she is quite a bit behind now. I will keep on pushing to make sure they take care of her for sure. Well I hope maybe my scare of flu is over. Thank goodness my other two have not gotten it yet so now I just pray my son doesn't get it again. It's going around in the school like crazy so praying heavily for it not to come back again. I hope your week starts out well and before we know it Thanksgiving will be here.

We had torrential rain here for a while today - wow!

Tonight we're going to a costume party - I know this is lame but I'm going as Lady Gaga and DH will be my paparazzi. I'm trying to decide if I staple balloons all over my outfit instead of "bubbles".

I am so glad I got out yesterday at lunchtime. I wasn't going to. I was going to sit at my desk and eat my soup and read my book and just give in to the "bleh" feeling that was creeping up on me.

Instead, I grabbed my purse and my digital camera and went for a drive. The weather was finally a tad warmer, and the sun was out. It was important for me to try to capture some of those fabulous fall colors before the wind and the rain took them away until next year.

My fall photos can be found here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/23863386@N03/
sets/72157622509547931/

Not much to say for today - I did poorly with my choices yesterday. Today I'm going to do better.

Time to shake this bleh feeling and get on with the day.

I hope you have a great one!

Take care,

Kelli

If *they've* used the word dyslexic they'd better do the testing. If, however, they're dancing around terms of diagnostics, then you might have to have some (very expensive) testing done to get that IEP, etc. I'm not the right person to give you advice on this; just repeating what I've heard from others.

I agree. Demand that she be tested in preparation for an IEP (individualized education plan). In our state, they must comply within a few weeks - I hope that is the same where you live. Then, the IEP team must prepare a plan that specifically addresses her strengths & weaknesses, with modifications or accommodations to help her be successful. I can look at my files at work the next time I am on campus, if you need the "legal" terms to get this process going. Just let me know!

Ms Tigger, You go to that school and make them test her and give her the help she needs. Get mean if you have to but tell them if they dont do the test and get her help that you are going to the board and possibly farther if thats what its going to take. They have to help you!!!! I delt with this stuff with my oldest, and I now homeschool because I could stand watching him struggle, and have to be so medicated to "fit" in a classroom setting. So now if he wants to wigglein his chair and tap his pencil so that he can think then so be it!

Sorry soar subject, but I do pray that you will stand your ground with them dont let htem push you around they have to help you.

Having a hard time doing anything for me yet. With sick kids and another one having to get her 4 month shots I stay pretty busy. Having a hard time with the school and getting the help for my middle daughter to help with grades. They school has thought she is dyslexic now for a few years but always have done just enough preventive for her just to scoot by and pass the test that could get her help so I took her to an outside person who tested her and says she has strong signs of it so now trying to battle and get all the info I can to help teach her better. Such a struggle but have to do something if the school won't in that area. Well have a good Wednesday team and take care.

Ok, as I type this, the sun isn't up yet, so I can only go by the "few showers" predicted by the weather forecasters.

Yesterday was an odd day - my computer crashed and it took our I.T. Dept. an hour to fix it! I'm just glad that they could! I felt good, and I got my strength training and steps in - I met ALL my goals for the first time in WEEKS (months, maybe!) THAT feels great!

Today, I have a bunch of things that need to be finished here at work, and a few catalogs to look through at home tonight. I order some holiday gifts over the internet, and every October "catalog season" begins. :)

Oh! Our United Way Campaign is going on this week at work. I've signed up for a 10 minute Hot stone Massage (for $10 donation). I am REALLY looking forward to that!

How are YOU doing today? What are you doing for you today?

Take care,

Kelli

Same around here, Circuskelli - it was a really nice weekend. We got a lot done, but also had plenty of family cuddle time. So nice!
Back to "fall" weather this morning - cool, drizzly. Yeah! However, it's supposed to heat up throughout the week & the Santa Ana winds will pick up. Ugh! My oldest son is in the 5th grade, and he has never had a birthday at school, due to weekends or brush fires closing the schools. Hopefully, next Monday he will get to celebrate his birthday with his friends at school (he's the one praying for that).

Let's hear it for sunshine and slightly warmer temps! YAY!

It was a busy weekend around the Circus, but a good one. I don't remember the last time I felt like I had "just enough" time for everything I wanted or needed to do over the weekend. That's a good feeling.

Sunday, I opened my Fitness Starter Kit and "played" with all the my new "toys". Aside from the cool stability ball, the new pedometer and the resistance bands, I found something else. A renewed sense of motivation and enthusiasm! I didn't know SparkPeople would put THAT in there, too! :D

So, today, I'm back to tracking my steps. That's a good thing. I did some strength training yesterday, and I plan on doing more today - working different 'groups' and alternating with my new 'toys' daily.

How are YOU doing today? What are you doing for you today?

Take care,

Kelli

The past 2 days, it rained & was cool (50s & 60s). Today, it was sunny & about 84 degrees. Ugh! Yes, it's pretty, and I should not complain, when so many of you are freezing, but golly, I like fall weather so much better! (Hard to believe that I am a so. Cal native who went to college in AZ.) Tomorrow & Saturday are supposed to be even hotter. Keep letting me know about cold weather - Maybe I can convince myself that it is so here.

It's pretty miserable here today - rainy, cold and damp. Brrrr. I just heard the news that the 'balloon boy' in CO has been found, alive, at home - phew! I hope that's true - it's breaking news.

The sun isn't out this morning, but it's been a good day so far. I've even had the opportunity to laugh out loud with a coworker again - that's always a good thing. I have another long to-do list waiting for me. I do enjoy feeling like I'm contributing and making a difference.

Yesterday, I worked on staying on track again with the ranges. I know I need to get some exercise in, too.

Not much else to say - I know I've been talking about my new hair cut for more than a few days now, but I can't believe how much better I feel about myself now. I'm very happy with it.

Ok, time to get to work.

How are YOU doing today? What are you doing for you today?

Take care,

Kelli

Thanks for all of the positive talk, Circuskelli! Keep up the awesome work.
It's raining & foggy here today, but I'll take it. It's so rare in so. Cal, and this is the type of weather that makes me feel alive. It's finally fall!!!

Lori - we ALL have those days! I'm glad you survived it and no one got hurt! LOL

---------

WooHoo! I lost .8 of a pound! It's a small number, but I'll take it!

WooHoo! I'm feeling good today!

WooHoo! Today I get to buy tickets for a concert I want to see next month! Double Woo!

The sun isn't out this morning, but it's been a good day so far. I've even had the opportunity to laugh out loud with a coworker -- AND, as soon as I finish this, I'm off to get some cocoa.

Last night, I totally blew the calorie range out of the water, but I'm back on track again today with the ranges. I know I need to get some exercise in, too. I'm going to work on that today.

Oh! Yesterday I ordered the Fitness starter kit from SparkPeople - I needed to replace my pedometer (which was fatally wounded in a freak truck accident - LOL), and I had a Spark Certificate from pre-ordering The Spark -- it seemed like a great time to invest in the right tools to help my journey! (Speaking of the right tools, I just today discovered a regular curling iron works MUCH better than a curling brush at getting the look I want! Another thing to WooHoo about!)

Comfy, stylish clothes, great hair, fun to look forward to... it's going to be a great day!

How are YOU doing today? Is it sunny where you are?

I had a real "Parent's semi-nightmare" (nothing serious) sort of day...I'm going to blog about it. Luckily I'm laughing, not crying, but, boy, sometimes I just want to slap my DH...

We finally got rain last night, so it's gorgeous here today! It's cloudy and cool, there's a good breeze, and we are expecting more rain over the next few days. Weather like this makes me feel so alive.

I finally checked off a couple things on my work to-do list that I have been avoiding. That feels so liberating.

Now, to go grocery shopping before I have to pick up the boys from school!

Woo! The sun is out here! YAY! I wish I would have brought my camera with me today. The fall colors show up so very prettily in the sunshine. I love the sunny fall days.

This morning, I got up, looked in the mirror and promptly reset the alarm to give me 20 more minutes to be horizontal. I then overslept an extra 10 minutes on top of that, of course. :) It was ok, though. Somehow, it all worked out and we all got to where we needed to be on time.

I've been working on staying within my ranges and drinking my water. I need to get back to doing some sort of exercise, but I've been procrastinating on that. Yesterday, it felt like I pigged out, but when I checked, I only went over on my carbs and stayed in the low end of my calorie range. Wow.

At work today, I've been crossing stuff off the to-do list. That always feels good. At home, I'm all caught up with the laundry (for now) and plan on (finally!) tackling that stack of paperwork that I need to go through. Keeping up with the paperwork is nearly as tough as keeping up with the laundry!

How are YOU doing today? Is it sunny where you are?

Take care,

Kelli

Kelli – what a bummer! I FLUSHED a pedometer down the toilet once (I didn’t mean to ;-)) Hope the ‘do’ comes out great!

Irish – sounds like fun chasing dog/balls

Tonight was “Family Fun Night” at DD’s school – I hadn’t gotten my exercise in so we decided to walk there (and back) - *she* got lots of exercise dancing, too, but the parents just weren’t on the dance floor so I decided not to embarrass myself and my kid…

Another chilly and rainy day here in Northern, IL, but I'm smiling because it's nearly the weekend! YAY!

I'm also smiling because I treated myself to a new haircut with highlights. I'm VERY pleased with how it turned out. :) I didn't get 12" cut off or anything, but it is a change for me.

I've been staying within my ranges and drinking my water. I'm working on reaching the non-weight related goals I've set, too.

This weekend is going to be a busy one, but I hope to get through some of that laundry and straighten up the house. That bedroom closet is a mess, too! I need to pack up at least some of that stuff and donate it. Most of the exercise I get will be walking around at a community event on Saturday and housecleaning tonight and on Sunday.

Do you have any weekend plans? How are YOU doing today?

Take care,

Kelli

My Corgi got me outside herding balls with her this morning by bringing a ball inside (a no-no), then running out with it once I noticed. We had a lot of fun chasing balls around the backyard for a while. I'm going to take a break from work later to take her on a walk, too. Can't be inside on a gorgeous fall day!
Kelli - Can't wait to see the new "do"! My niece cut 12" off my hair in August, and I love it. Hope you like your new style & color, too.

My pedometer fell off my waistband last night and was crushed under our truck. I'll be ordering a new one today.

It's chilly and rainy here in Northern, IL today, but I'm smiling because I'm going to get my hair done tonight! A new cut/style and even some "coloring"! Highlights or frosting or something! Woo! Photos WILL be posted in the next few days. I'm excited! It's been a long time since I've had more than "just a trim".

I'm going to keep my daily goals in mind again today -- stay within ranges, do some strength training, and drink my water. I'm working on reaching the non-weight related goals I've set, too.

I'm feeling good again today! How are YOU doing today?

I hope you have a really great day!

Take care,

Thanks, Irish - will try to find it.

Kelli - WTG! Yes, it's "one day at a time" - aiming for perfection all the time just isn't realistic, but doing the best you can at each choice you make will get you there. And if you don't always make the best choice don't let that make you give up for the day - at the next meal get right back on track.

OK, now I'll get off my soapbox LOL...

Yesterday I stayed within my ranges again (for the most part) and reached a couple of my goals for the day. YAY ME! Focusing on DAILY goals seems to be working better for me. I

The new scale weighed me about 2.5 lbs more than the old. The old scale didn't have a decimal place on it (and it was quiet old). I'm pleased with this purchase. Better "tools" are only going to help me with this journey.

I'm going to keep my daily goals in mind again today -- stay within ranges, do some strength training, and drink my water. I'm going to work to reach the non-weight related goals I've set, too.

Yesterday I stayed within my ranges (for the most part) and reached a couple of my goals for the day. WOW, what a good feeling! I've been looking too far ahead, I think. Instead, I'm focusing on DAILY goals. I also bought a new scale last night - a Weight Watchers one. We'll see what that does to my weekly numbers. I don't have a lot of faith in the accuracy of my old scale.

Today, I'm going to keep my daily goals in mind -- stay within ranges, do some strength training (I've already gotten some in today!), and drink my water. I'm also going to work to reach the non-weight related goals I've set.

I'm feeling good again today. I like that feeling.

I hope you have a really great day!

Take care,

Kelli

LOVE this time of year! About 3 years ago I heard Gods call to do something new at our church for Halloween. It is called "The Walk of Faith" we always have a great turn out. This is year 3! I also love the fall because of the cooler weather, and the colors. There is just a special spirit in the air this time of year! LOVE IT!

Back to Monday!

I've just input all my October goals - I love the start of a new month!

The task list at work today is pretty busy, plus I have a dentist appointment tonight after work. I'm hoping to get a little household shopping done after that. I already have a stew going in the crockpot for the family dinner, and I'm wearing a nice (and comfortable!) outfit today.

I'm feeling good. Life is good today.

Here's wishing you all a really great day!

Take care,

Kelli

LoriBBB - We just had that topic last week or so in the Teachers Learning to Lose team. See if you can find the thread - People suggested all sorts of easy, cheap, but fun costumes.

Halloween decorations are up! It was drizzling this morning (such a change from 97 degrees a couple days ago), but then the sun came out & the wind picked up. It was still "cool" (67, I think), so it was perfect for decorating. The boys were so excited to help out. Now, to find the costumes they want - we might need to do that online!

I've got a Halloween dilemma - DH and I have been invited to a costume party. 20 years ago I would have had some sort of great costume idea, but now I don't. I'd like to show off my new body, so I think I might put a fake plant on my head and go as Lady Gaga...but I keep thinking I can do better. Suggestions?

My kids are all hyped up about Halloween. I'm enjoying the slightly cooler weather, but yesterday and this morning we needed the heat - just for a few minutes - if it were just me and DH we wouldn't have turned it on but the kids are just so cold (no fat to insulate them!) and older DD has to get up at 6:30 now for middle school.

I'm sick now...bummer for me. But tomorrow no matter how lousy I feel I'm going to use the shop vacuum DH borrowed to clean up the mess in my basement that's been there since July when we had the basement waterproofed (in my defense we were away the whole month of August). Anyway, it's *really* time...

Our plan is to put up Halloween decorations this Sunday. Of course, that may not happen, since my husband has already worked 60 or more hours this week, won't be home until midnight tonight, then will be gone 7a-6p tomorrow. AGH! We love fall so much - Why does it have to be so busy?!

Fall is my favorite time of the year. Only now that I work full-time, I feel like it comes and goes too fast. I feel like it is only the beginning of the month, but soon Halloween will be here and gone! :( I used to have so much time to plan and make everything extra special. Now that I work, I feel A LOT of pressure to keep up that standard. From myself most because it was always so much fun doing fun activities with my daughter to decorate the house and special things to cook, etc. I feel like the extra time I have on the weekends I need to recouperate from the workweek and dont' have the energy to make the holidays special. I HATE WORKING! I would much rather be a SAHM again! :(
