We tend to get the bugs, too. Neither DH or I like to spray (don't want to breathe the fumes) and different times of year we have scorpions, gnats and katydids (camel crickets)....Roaches have not been a problem ...knock on wood. Outdoors it's ticks and fire ants and mosquitoes. Yes! The joy of living in the country. But I do love it.

This evening we went and ate at DS and DIL's new (old) home and helped them get a front flower bed planted with bulbs. A lady at home depot sold them to the kids, and I'm so hoping they perform well for them. The house they bought is almost 60 yrs old, is a couple blocks from where I grew up, and I knew the boy whose family lived there.

Your'e right - there is just that brief period of time between when it's too cold to open the windows, to warm enough to open them and have that fresh aroma, to when the flies and other unnamed flying insects begin creeping in. We do have animals around, and we do get flies, plus we live in this old house where they crawl in between the walls and settle in for the winter. The sun brings them out and they crwl through the lttle openings that the window cords go through - it's such a "joy"! One of the joys of country living that most people probably don't think about! =) But I still LOVE spring best of all!!

KMF -- I love the brief period of time where we can have the windows open! When we first built (almost 30 yrs ago) DH insisted on having an attic fan. We used it for a few years to bring the cool air in at night, and then we would shut the windows during the day and keep the rooms shaded to avoid letting sunlight in that would heat everything up. It worked fairly well ..... except there was SO much dust brought in with the powerful fan. It has been shut off for years and we've not even opened the upstairs ceiling vent to let it work. DH and I were just discussing whether we need to disable the switch in case someone turns it on by accident. Might be kind of interesting to try to use it again.

It's the "little things" that make a house a home! They sound like bright spots of color and cheerfulness addd, Paula!! And nothing like flowers to make a house beautiful, whether planted inside or out!!

My hope today is to to get a lot of the little things done that tend to get put off, but that can make such a difference. I'm so glad that spring has sprung, and I can get a bit of fresh air into the house. (As long as my husband doesn't come behind me, closing all the windows I have opened a crack!) That's a smell that to me makes the house a fresh home!!

Yesterday I bought a few of the little metal garden decorations at the Dollar Tree to stick in pots for my springtime caladium bulb planting. There are a couple of sunflowers and a hummingbird. Totally useless, but fun!

I hung up a picture of a stream with dogwoods blooming along the banks. Just brings a bit of springtime inside!

For many years I tried my best to make my house a "home" for my family. Now I'm living alone and have begun making changes that make it a home for just me. My favorite color (pale blue) is in almost every room. I cook when I want what I want. I clean one room at a time. It's becoming just like I like it. :)

Yes, pictures are the "finishing touch" to a home that expresses love! I need to be working on getting grandkids' pictures up - I bought a plaque the other week that says "Grandchildren complete the circle of love" I think it will be perfect in the center of a collage of our 11 grandkids!

KMF - I love doing things like that for my hubby. He does them for me too. Yesterday I cam home and he had dinner in the crock pot and the dishes were done.

I continue to work on hanging pictures in our home. To me, I love looking around and seeing my family and friends.

emoticon At my Mom's instigation, we have been going through our old VHS camcorder tapes from back in the late 80's, early 90's. DH found some new software at Best Buy for converting them to DVD, so we have been drawn into that the past few days. There are all kinds of tapes lying around and at the end of viewing another one I say "No More!" -- but get hooked again at another memory. So....I guess you could say we've been doing a little decluttering as we've been throwing many old VHS tapes into the recycle bin.

Every day this week, I de-cluttered a surface or a shelf. Even got the main shower-bathroom scrubbed down, old shampoo storage racks removed...did a complete overhaul to the room.

A new goal that I have is to do at least one thing special to make my husband feel at peace, or valued, or loved when he steps in the door each day. "Special" does not mean anything big, it can be something as small as having the kitchen table cleared off, or the smell of fresh bread, or as simple as greeting him at the door with a smile and kiss when he comes in, anything to make him know that I'm glad he's "home" (not just coming back to his house).

It dawned on me that the holidays are upon us. It's time to clean good and organize a bit. I want to make a list of the things I bought as presents, take inventory of decorations, and see what I need to get.

God grant me the serenity to change the things I can, to accept the things I cannot change, and the wisdom to know the difference.

emoticon Way to go!

My big focus for November will be bringing the plants inside. I have a number of potted plants that will freeze if not protected. Average first frost here is Nov 15 -- but sometimes it comes earlier. It's a real job arranging all the plants in our front room with the wall of windows. Plus there are some that can stay outdoors, but need to be placed against the south side of the house (where the windows are) to get that little extra protection. They're the ones that can take a freeze and will come back next year if the freeze isn't too severe. An added project this month is DH and I are experimenting with turning an old dove house in the back yard into a greenhouse. The sides will have to be covered with plastic and we'll have to have a heater with thermostat in for really bad weather. Won't try to have it like the tropics, but will try to keep it around 40 degrees. This will really help with some of the big "back breakers". I love plants! I know it sounds crazy to be spending this much time on potted plants...LOL.

I have been working on my yard for awhile. I have been focused on what needs to be done. Last week, I walked into my yard and for the first time, realized how much was completed and how wonderful it looked. It was a great feeling.

My color scheme I've decided involves different colors for different rooms. I've always had a hard time making up my mind, and even don't want to have dishes that are all the same pattern. The trick I'm working on is making all the variations harmonize with one another. emoticon

I moved in with my DH last year. He thinks of a house as a house.. he is military. I want my house to be a home. So, while he is deployed, I am working on hanging pictures (his walls were all white and blank), decorating with blankets and pillows on the couches for color, accent rugs.... I am trying to make it more home like for when he comes home.

Bought multiple decor items and pots. Still need 2 more decor items to complete my theme. Hard to find now, because most of the summer things are gone. But when I do find them, on sale!

sometimes I think I'd like to just move to another house and start all over with the decorating. I would if I had unlimited funds, but not the case, so will do what I can, while I can, with what I have, and give God the thanks for our house and land is the place that our grown kids still love "coming home" to!!

Roof is on! Took less than a week. I was pleased with the contractor and the team. They cleaned everything up very nicely and were respectful of my flowerbeds. We even had a little mother wren that sat on eggs in a hanging basket under the eaves while all the banging was going on. She soldiered on through and is now feeding her little babies!

Sounds really pretty.

We are very close to getting a new roof. Several contractors have come out....when we get the bids we'll decide who to go with. I'm wanting a nice light color. It will be the enamelled metal.

we do want to hold on to our "stuff" don't we? I'm so guilty of this. A little is good....I don't want to have a totally empty home....but there is a fine line there when we start holding onto things we don't have a use for and probably never will. I've worked with people who just want to throw everything away, and that doesn't sit well with me. I love the multiple charitable organizations here where these things can be donated and find a new life!

That's what my real-estate friend says the first thing she recommends for people who are putting their home on the market to do -- Clear out as much as possible. The house will show much better with the minimum of furniture and have a much better chance to sell. So.....why not do it for yourself even if you're not planning to sell? LOL....easier said than done.

My mom is resistent to any help with her organization. I have decided to focus on me first. I then will tackle her home to make it safer for her to live there alone. I will need reinforcements - my cousins.

Same here as far as being a pack rat...I was raised by a mom who lived during the great depression and taught me never to throw anything away that had a future life as a craft or part for something else. I think some of that is good.....but can be carried to extremes. We are using the opportunity of MIL's upcoming estate sale to take a lot of our "stuff" we don't need to sell. Hopefully my kids won't have such a tough job someday when it's their time to sort through everything here. My mom is still alive, and I am dreading the day I'm in charge of trying to go through all that she has packed into her place and outbuildings.

I am getting ready for all the remodeling I anticipate occurring this year and I have "discovered" I am a pack rat. Too much of everything. That is what happens when you can't pass up a bargain AND you have a place to stash it.

Hmmm...not shopping, perhaps a way to save more money? emoticon emoticon And more time to exercise, too!

my house is way too big for me on my own and is crumbling around me but it is mine---bought and paid for!---and it would take a lot to make it ready to sell, so here I am.
I have re-decorated my living room in the last few years and I am pleased with that. My bedroom is also very different than when my ex and I were together. I am seeking a calm, relaxing atmosphere and the more I de-clutter the closer I will get to that, but I'm a collector who loves "stuff" so my two halves are in conflict. Ah, well .....progress not perfection, like I say about my weight!

You are so right. I am fortunate to have a house. Sometimes, I get so caught up in all the things that are wrong with it, I forget that.

And, small things do make a difference.

loved reading these posts- seems like many people are facing the same things that I am. I'm just so fortunate in this economy to even have a house that I try not to get down on myself if it's not just how I want it- something to work on and look forward too. I have boards on pinterest, will be checking Houzz!

Make it happen- just one step at a time!

House repair bad karma today

House repair good karma today

Called the handyman my Dad's friend uses. He was efficient, pleasant and affordable! And he can do the minor tile project for just $50 bucks. I just have to find the tile.

Had to call a plumber to fix clog shower. He thought I was some home repair novice because he brought the wrong type of snake to fix the shower, Actually, suggested he might need to go through the wall instead of the drain!

It took just a minute for him to get a reality check. He went somewhere and brought another snake to fixed the drain. I almost did not let him end, but he apologized so profusely for his dumb statement, that I let him fix it. with me standing right there.

Why oh why, do some males think women are dumb? Yikes?! And yes, I made sure my receipt had the warranty info on it,

Definitely! I'm in the stage now of looking at kitchens online (pinterest has some very neat compilations) and trying to visualize what I want different about mine. I'm trying to jot down thoughts and keep them in a notebook...One thing I really want are glass fronted shelves up high where I can display some of the beautiful china and other items I don't use a whole lot -- seems a shame not to enjoy it in some way. I know a lot of people would say to get rid of it if you don't use it--but a few things like that (inherited --family heirlooms etc) I like just having even if only used once a year.

It is so tempting just to move instead of remodeling. Honestly, I can't afford higher mortage payments. Where I want to move is higher rent area. So....here goes...fingers crossed. emoticon

My poor old house needs remodelling/updating but first I need to get some space cleared. Today I just want to get started on the bedroom to prepare it for the visit of a friend. I'm thinking of switching beds between the bsmt bedroom and the upstairs guest room as the room upstairs is smaller but has a bigger bed at the moment.

Great idea for a topic thread.

Although we've lived in our house for almost 30 years, I'm also now considering some major renovations. I got on a kick several years back and did a few things with hubby like ripping out carpet in the bedroom and together installing laminate flooring (hubby says "never again...lol") and having a new door put to the backporch from the living room and I painted several rooms.

Hubby has been super involved with the care of both parents for years now. Now they have both passed away--His mom just passed recently--and when the estate has been settled that will free my husband up to concentrate on renovations and remodeling.

My big thing I want to do is to enlarge the den and remodel the kitchen at the same time. The kitchen and den are really the same big room now so it's logical to do them together. I'm excited that we will be able to do this now.

So, last year my focus was the backyard which is almost completed.

Now, I am on a year long project to upgrade each and every room of my home. Some of the upgrades are simply comestic and very simple - like new knobs for the cabinets and organizing the cabinets. Others will involve a contractor.

This weekend I am doing an assessment to see what I really want. (And, decluttering, of course.)

Probably one of the biggest organizational challenges occurs when you decide to remodel, redo or redecorate your home. No matter what the project (kitchen re-do, floors, painting), it has an impact on your environment.

This topic is for those challenges and rewards associate with remodeling and redecorating. Post here your frustrations. Brag about your accomplishments. Big or Small.

We are here for each other.
