Paula, I use a shark steam machine, but no dogs so I don't know if it would work for you or not.

Kathy, emoticon On getting all the canning done!!!

Oh, Kathy I am working on some frames/pictures I have. I want to use or lose all of my extra frames. (Read that I have too many).

emoticon on finishing the canning, Kathy!

I'm still working on the perfect mop for the den. The little microfiber one I bought ends up just spreading the dirt after awhile, and instead of being in splotches, it leaves a nice fine film over the tile when it dries. Then the dogs come in and their paws lift the fine film and leave tracks of "clean" tile in the shape of paw prints. Yes. We live in a dog house!

I had the bright idea of breaking down some of our old ripped utility towels and sewing some slip on pads to put over the mop head when the microfiber gets full. Might be just the thing.

Christine: So what kind of project are you working on now? I like following your projects!!

I am FINISHED with canning (well almost, squash yet to do sometime in the future), the "equipment" is all put away, the jars are stored -- and it feels wonderful. It was so freeing to go into the kitchen this morning, and not to think what bucketful was waiting for me to do today! And freeing not to see big pans, and food mills, and jars on counters, either full needing to be put away, or empty onew waiting to be filled!! NOW I can start appreciating the finished product of it all!

And I finally feel free to begin some major cleaning emoticon emoticon - and I am so looking forward to it !! ... it's not often that I say I'm looking forward to cleaning. But right now, just a showering of some TLC will be the best thing to do to make this house a home again after a busy summer!!

As Braveheart - and Dave Ramsey - would say: F R E E E E E D O O O M M M !!!!

The mirror needs to be sanded (with a sander) and the wood stained to match. This is the half wall DH put in. Now I am working on the cabinet that is being sanded, some hand sanding, but mostly with a sander. :-) We also have some old license plates from the 20's and 30's that we are going to use. I am going to "weather" a board to mount them on.

Maybe I will do a video when I refinish the oak table, or the farm cabinet. :-)

Paula, let me know when you find the right ones! There are the ones that nail in, which I didn't want to do, because I know the bottom stuff will wear thin and need replacing, and I don't want to pull out, nail in, pull out, nail in. The sticky ones are okay for a time, but then the glue dries out, and they slide off (actually only on DH's chairs so far...?) , so next we're going to try the sticky ones that come with a rubber cup around them, to stay in place longer. Thought we had found them, but need an 1/8" larger. Hope they have them in that size... Our chairs are Amish-made, so we'll see. We have hardwood floors, so definitely need something. I used to keep a rug under the table and chairs, but it is sooo much easier to clean the room without that rug - may eventually go back to that though.

Christiane, are you going to send us a picture of your project? And when you talk about sanding, do you use an electric sander, or just the "elbow grease" kind? I think you should make a video to share with us, I'd love to see you in action! (Same for you, Paula, with all that jewelry!!)

need to find some gliders for the bottom of the wood dining chairs that scrape across the tiles now when pulling in and out from the table.

Kathy....LOL...just re-read my post, too. Now we've got white hair added to the black fur. At least we're making them stay in the den now.

I do need to get to the basics around here as well. Part of that is getting the jewelry out of the computer room. I have saved a lot of my Mom's necklaces and other items, but there is a TON of 80's style costume jewelry, as well as older vintage stuff from the 40's, 50's and on. It is neat to look at and I'll hold onto what doesn't sell. I just don't see either of my boys being interested in any of it. At this point there are no grandchildren, so my hopes of a granddaughter wanting some of it don't seem too likely.

Just re-read my post from June 14, did I write that just a month ago? Seemed like it should have been fresher in my mind, because I should have been working on it!! It was a good reminder to myself to get conscientious about those "most important things" in my life!

I missed this thread earlier it seems. Christine had quite a few things accomplished and planned for the spring!

Kathy, I know what you mean about getting back to the basics. We could use some of that here as well. Right now there seems to be black dog hair everywhere. Since we had to have our other dog put down last week we've given our remaining dog a little bit more freedom around the house as she seems to be moping and sad. I'm looking to buy one of those shedding brushes with a razor, but that won't solve the whole dog hair issue. I've been trying to convince DH to go to the humane society with me and search for a new little friend for Sunny. I really do think dogs are happier with a companion. STILL waiting for the estate sale crew to get started. We've been ready since mid-April. The housing market here is going crazy and everyone keeps telling me we need to get my Mom's house on the market NOW. Stressful. Our house could definitely use just a good basic dusting, mopping, and vacuuming.

Thinking right now, that the best thing I could do to make my house a home is to go back to the basics, and just put a little more love into it by keeping it cleaner... I do this great job when I know company is coming, but I really need to remind myself that my DH "comes" everyday - just need to do a better job of making my home a place that wants to be returned to! Of course that probably has more to do with "me" than "the house", doesn't it? emoticon

Paula, I think you could do it! I love DIY.

I haven't been on here much because I have had some family stuff going on and health issues, which are being resolved. Now I am doing just what this says. I am working on making my house a home.

Please keep in mind that I am always making more work for myself. :)

My king bed just seemed to be shot all of a sudden, so I looked online and a new memory bed would be at the lowest over $1,500 so I took my bed all apart, ordered (top of the line) new memory foam, and I will be putting it back together when my order comes in.

I also had my couch cushions professionally redone and I will be making a washable slipcover for it soon.

I also got all the fabric I needed in order to make a king sized rag quilt for the spring/summer with a dust ruffle and shams.

My energy is back up now due to my new thyroid meds. Wish me luck!!! :)

Anyone else doing projects this spring?

I'm trying to decide whether I want to go to the trouble to scrape the popcorn texture off the ceiling in the den when I paint this summer. Sure would make a difference, but might be more than I can handle. We've got popcorn everywhere (house built in the 80's), and just viewed a friend's home where she had the ceilings redone. It definitely modernized the house.

hubby bought a greenhouse window for the kitchen. Come spring I hope he has the time to get it in. I'd love to grow herbs in it.

We have an electric fireplace in the den. I'd love to get a nice braided rug to put in front of it.

A goal without a plan is just a wish.

I have lazy housemates who do nothing. So, it is all up to me in this household. If I do not do the dishes and the cleaning and the trash and the cooking it will never get done. It is all up to me to make myself a home. The positive side? I get in my activity. My problem? When the day is over I forget to log in my activity as I am exhausted. Atleast I know I am getting it in though.

Love a good clean smell..... Sometimes I think our den gets too much of a "doggy" smell. Our two big dogs both have beds in there and sleep in at night even though they're out during the day. I try to keep the bed covers washed regularly, and also occasionally use the Arm and Hammer carpet deodorizer that is for pets.

ah, yes, live plants: mine need to be "re-stocked" as my ex-bf did a minimal job of checking my house while I was away and many of the plants did not do well with the neglect.
I love fragrances and have a candle warmer in the family room, scented candles in various spots and often spray lavender in my bedroom at bedtime.

Kathy -- those scents sound very nice. I agree about the flowery scents....sometimes they can be overpowering....almost to the point of giving me a headache.

Yes ladies -- de-cluttering and cleaning are so important for making a house a home you want to be in.

Good tip about the music! I used to listed to audio books while doing my chores, but now that DH is around all the time, I've stopped doing it so much.

Probably for me, the best way to make my house a home is to do just what this team is all about - just keep it neat and tidy, organized, systematically cleaned -- and that ladies, for me, is a big and unending job! But a worthwhile calling!! emoticon

Hmmm.. my favorite scents.. it really depends on my mood.

I always like the linen scent, especially in bathroom and bedroom (I also like crisp sheets - no those ultra-soft one, and no candle beats the smell of line-dried laundry!) In the kitchen I like the cinnamon-apple kinds, and living room - probably aloe or something like fresh rain would be my favorite. I'm not into the real strong flowery scents, find them to be a bit over the top for me. And I don't burn a bunch of different ones at the same time, usually the room where I just where I want to relax for a while, or to prepare an aura for guests.

I love adding scents to my bedding. I spray one of my many perfumes lightly while I make up the bed in the morning. At night the scent is very light and makes the sheets feel fresher.

Kathy -- now you've got me thinking of home made bread. emoticon emoticon
Funny coincidence -- I just came in here to look up a recipe for chicken pot pie -- I have some refrigerated pie crusts that need to be used, and some thawed Christmas turkey.

I know what you mean about the smell, though. There is a quick baked apple dish I make --when I've got lots of apples-- that has cinnamon in it -- The smell is really inviting. Also....this is the time of year when people start thinking of those fall meals that stick to the ribs.

To my husband, I know that the smell of warm homemade bread, or a pie sitting on the old woodstove in our kitchen ( first thing you see when you walk in the door ) is what would shout HOME to him. But what a dilemma, as though are two things that neither of us need to be eating!!

We tend to get the bugs, too. Neither DH or I like to spray (don't want to breathe the fumes) and different times of year we have scorpions, gnats and katydids (camel crickets)....Roaches have not been a problem ...knock on wood. Outdoors it's ticks and fire ants and mosquitoes. Yes! The joy of living in the country. But I do love it.

This evening we went and ate at DS and DIL's new (old) home and helped them get a front flower bed planted with bulbs. A lady at home depot sold them to the kids, and I'm so hoping they perform well for them. The house they bought is almost 60 yrs old, is a couple blocks from where I grew up, and I knew the boy whose family lived there.

Your'e right - there is just that brief period of time between when it's too cold to open the windows, to warm enough to open them and have that fresh aroma, to when the flies and other unnamed flying insects begin creeping in. We do have animals around, and we do get flies, plus we live in this old house where they crawl in between the walls and settle in for the winter. The sun brings them out and they crwl through the lttle openings that the window cords go through - it's such a "joy"! One of the joys of country living that most people probably don't think about! =) But I still LOVE spring best of all!!

KMF -- I love the brief period of time where we can have the windows open! When we first built (almost 30 yrs ago) DH insisted on having an attic fan. We used it for a few years to bring the cool air in at night, and then we would shut the windows during the day and keep the rooms shaded to avoid letting sunlight in that would heat everything up. It worked fairly well ..... except there was SO much dust brought in with the powerful fan. It has been shut off for years and we've not even opened the upstairs ceiling vent to let it work. DH and I were just discussing whether we need to disable the switch in case someone turns it on by accident. Might be kind of interesting to try to use it again.

It's the "little things" that make a house a home! They sound like bright spots of color and cheerfulness addd, Paula!! And nothing like flowers to make a house beautiful, whether planted inside or out!!

My hope today is to to get a lot of the little things done that tend to get put off, but that can make such a difference. I'm so glad that spring has sprung, and I can get a bit of fresh air into the house. (As long as my husband doesn't come behind me, closing all the windows I have opened a crack!) That's a smell that to me makes the house a fresh home!!

For many years I tried my best to make my house a "home" for my family. Now I'm living alone and have begun making changes that make it a home for just me. My favorite color (pale blue) is in almost every room. I cook when I want what I want. I clean one room at a time. It's becoming just like I like it. :)

Yes, pictures are the "finishing touch" to a home that expresses love! I need to be working on getting grandkids' pictures up - I bought a plaque the other week that says "Grandchildren complete the circle of love" I think it will be perfect in the center of a collage of our 11 grandkids!

KMF - I love doing things like that for my hubby. He does them for me too. Yesterday I cam home and he had dinner in the crock pot and the dishes were done.

I continue to work on hanging pictures in our home. To me, I love looking around and seeing my family and friends.

emoticon At my Mom's instigation, we have been going through our old VHS camcorder tapes from back in the late 80's, early 90's. DH found some new software at Best Buy for converting them to DVD, so we have been drawn into that the past few days. There are all kinds of tapes lying around and at the end of viewing another one I say "No More!" -- but get hooked again at another memory. So....I guess you could say we've been doing a little decluttering as we've been throwing many old VHS tapes into the recycle bin.
