The first day I used 5-pound weights, but have since switched them and now use my 3-pounders. I barely got through the first workout...

Just a note to people who "don't want to bulk up":

Women can't bulk up, not like men, not unless we take steroids or masses amounts of protein with hours upon hours of weight training. We could probably do the 30DS everyday with 20 lb. weights and not bulk up, we're just not built like that. So please don't worry about that, it's not gonna happen with just 10 lb weights or lighter.

Personally, I agree with those who need varying weights for varying moves. I've been doing them all with 5 lb weights, but that's not enough for some (like chest flies) and it's too much for others (the side lunge one in L1 and the chair press and v-fly in L2...whoo!). I have 5s and 10s, but I'm gonna get some 2s or 3s as well.

I started with 3s for all levels, and have moved up to 5s in level one, but not the other levels. I could definitely use a heavier weight for the chest flies, but my husband is using my 8s.

Right now I only have 2 lb weights, and I'm on day 5 of the Shred working every other day. Only now can I do every repetition of every move, so I don't think they were too light to start. For the chest flies, I use (don't laugh) gallon milk jugs full of water. Not sure how much those weight, though.

I'm planning on getting 5 lb weights this weekend for the remainder of level 1 and on to level 2.

Goals:

Starting Date: 1/14/09

- Lose 5 pounds by 1/31/09 (met 1/26/09)
- Lose 10 pounds by my 30th Birthday on 2/28/09 (met 2/17/09)
- Lose 15 pounds by 4/1/09 (met 3/6/09)
- Lose 20 pounds by 5/1/09 (met 4/26/09)
- Fit into my favorite riding jeans by 7/1/09
- Tropical vacation with my husband at goal weight!

I started out with 2lb weights, and then when a friend came over to do it with me, she had no weights. I lent her my 2lb's and tried it with 5lbs, and thought I was going to die! So I'm down to 2.5lbs now. I feel like I can do a lot more with the chest flies, but everything else, I'd stick to a lower weight.

I started L1 with 2 lbs, and then slowly progressed to 4lbs at the end of it. Then on L2 was using 4lbs, but hard a hard time and was sore and couldnt complete the arm work so went to 2lbs and keep alternating to be able to do all the work...

I am on 5's and 8's and 16's for the chest flies and some of the shoulder work. I grab different ones depending on the exercise. I now also do the cardio portions with 2-5lb weights in my hands.

I am starting Shred Round 2 tomorrow..I saw great results the first time around.

3 pounds... I will probably work my way up to 5s soon. The arms never seem as hard for me as the leg stuff (legs are always much more sore too), which is funny, because my arms I always considered to be most out of shape due to all of the flab on them.

I've been using jars of sauce that weigh a little over a pound and a half. Frankly, I don't think I've missed out on anything by having lighter weights. I'm still toning up a bit and losing weight and feeling shredded.

I use 8 lbs. and 12 lbs. for most things (rows, curls, presses). I use 15 lbs. for flys, but I can only manage 5 lbs. on the squat v-raises in circuit 3 of level 2. I am screaming at the end of those! I hate them.

In the video of level 1 the weights are probably around 1.5 to 2lbs based on their size. I would start there and then progress to 3 & 5 pound weights when you feel ready to :)

I am only on Day 2, but at first I was doing the 5 lbs weights and switched to my 3 lb ones after the 1st circuit. Hopefully I can work my way back up to 5. But I do think I will use the 5's for the chest flies as I wasn't feeling anything with the 3s. Good advice!

Megan,

Good job trying with the 8lb weights though! I'd think there's nothing wrong with using them for as many reps as you an then dropping them and using nothing. You'd still get the same outcome as using smaller weights for all the reps.

I gave a couple cans of soup to my 9 yr old daughter who wanted to do the video. She was insulted. She stopped complaining when she had to put them down! :-)

you guys are gonna laugh at me, but the only weights I have are 8 lb weights!!! oh noes! So, on day one, I *tried* it with 8 lb weights and it did *NOT* work so I tossed 'em and finished the work out with *no* weights. emoticon

On day 2, I still hadn't bought new lighter wieghts so I actually used family sized cans of fruit for my weights emoticon

Today, day 3, I used the 8lb weights for the flies and for 1/2 of the rows, and the fruit for the rest of it lol. I'm such a dork. AND! I'm going to buy lighter weights tonight =P

I started out with 5 pound weights because they were the only ones I had. I didn't want to go out and buy new ones. Even though its a high number I can tell a difference in my arms and within the first 10 days it wasn't as straining.

4lbs for me. I think I'm going to try 10lbs for the shoulder press and flys because they seem awful easy with the 4lbs.

I use three pounds weights. They are scuba weights though (little bricks of lead). I need to get real hand weights.

You're better off starting at 3lbs then gradually
go to 5lbs, otherwise you feel the strain on your
muscles.

For Level 1 I was able to use 3lbs about half the time & 5 pounds the other half of the time. The only time I used 8 pounds was for the chest flies. I recently started Level 2 & I stuck with 3 pounds the entire time, lol, I can't imagine doing 5 pounders with those shoulder moves. Some day hopefully!

I use 2.5kg (5.5 pounds) or 3 kg (6.4 or so) for just about everything. After my first day I thought I'd started way too heavy, but I've noticed I built up that strength super fast--especially noticed on the level 3 punching with the weights! I would like to get something heavier for, well, basically anything that's not a lateral, overhead, or v-raise though.

I'm using 3lb weights and I can really feel it with the rows, squat and press, and the anterior raises with the lunge.

For some reason though, I don't feel it that much while doing the chest flies. So I'm thinking about switching to 5 or 8lbs during that set only.

The first time I did the shred I used 2 lb weights and for my 2nd round I'm using 3 lb weights. I knew I had poor strength but I guess its worse than I thought b/c my arms were just killing me in LV 1. I don't think I'll be going any higher in weights b/c I don't want to bulk up, I just want to be toned.

HAHA! It's definately working. I started this DVD back in August last year and was consistent for the first 2 weeks...then I just quit. I was so upset with myself. I started back this morning for the first time. I remember my legs hurting so bad I couldn't even walk normal. I hate to tell you but the 3rd day is worse than the 2nd. Just keep at it...you will make it and it's so worth it!!

I have 2 sets of weights 5# and 8#. I use the 5 pound when doing lateral raises and shoulder stuff, but when doing bicep or triceps work, I use the heavier weight. I think it just depends on your fitness level to what weight (if any) you should start out on.

I started out with 3 lbs. back in November. I plan to buy 5 lbs. weight next month. I probably won't go any bigger then 5 lbs.

I started out with a pair of 3s and got up to 5s. I wouldn't do the shred with anything heavier except for the chest flys which I'll use a pair of 10s.

I started with 3 lb weights. I did the series twice and used 3 pounders both times.
