I did it!!! I didn't know how I would do...but I did it!!! I wore my C & C Runners (just a fun running club my boyfriend started with his best friend - open to any passionate runner and race enthusiast) logo'd purple and gold singlet and got a matching purple and gold headband at the Expo the day before..and my slicky tight black shorts (didn't need a drop of GU with those shorts on!!! They cyber suck in your marathon thunder thighs!!! LOL....and I wore a cool colorful pair of crazy clown wicking running socks with my Sauconys (I was debating between those and the Asics but they were the most comfy and I had done more distance mileage training in them - NOTHING NEW! LOL) I had my usual breakfast of an english muffin and low-fat PB with coffee and creamer and gatorade. Then, I had a banana and part of a muffin before the race at the "platinum tent" (which was worth the extra money just for the private porta potties and parking ALONE! LOL) It was freezing outside to me (I'm cold natured) so in the 40's or so, but that didn't last long! I have the sunburn on my nose to prove it (despite me putting sunblock on before the race too!!! I think when I finished it was in the 80's...easily and in the 70's at the halfway mark too!!!I picked a conservative corral of 5:15 because I didn't know how I would do and wanted to be on the safe side for my first marathon!
Once the race started, the bands and crowds were awesome! So supportive and cheering the whole way! I high-fived a ton of little kids along the way and had people screaming, "GO C & C RUNNERS!!!!" I had to go to the porta johns between mile 5 and 6 (too much gatorade this morning)! And, I made sure to actually stop and walk at every water/cytomax/gel station just to drink one or two cups and hydrate properly! I was feeling awesome the first 10 miles, keeping my pace between a 9:30 and 10 minute pace. Then, at mile marker 11.5....the half marathoners veered right heading towards the finishline and we went left to continue on our journey. I was jealous cause I could see the people who had reached mile marker 16 and 17 coming back on the other side of the road.....(that was kinda cruel....and it happened again at mile marker 20.,...I could see people who were at 24 and 25....SO WRONG! LOL) But, anyways....its strange....at the half marathon stage....I was getting tired....and it was up to about 75 outside and was hot...with a nice annoying headwind......and I questioned my sanity!!! But, then I saw someone holding a sign that said, "Nut up or shut up" from the movie Zombieland and I remember putting that as a quote on my Facebook page when I signed up and committed to running this marathon and that gave me a mental kick in the pants and I pressed on!!!!
Then I hit my mental and physical wall at mile marker 15. That made me panic because it was so early in the race! The ball of my right foot hurt soooo bad.....so bad that I didn't think I would be able to run the whole thing or maybe even finish. But, I stopped...and pointed and flexed my foot and just took off running again. The wall lasted for a while...I think until about mile marker 19. But, I never once stopped and opted to walk. I was determined that I was gonna run this entire race and do the absolute personal best that I had in me PERIOD!!!!
Then....something amazing happened....at mile marker 20....I actually felt pretty good! There had been NO gels the entire race until 20...so I sucked down 2 of those things like they were my last meal and drank 2 cups of cytomax!!! Then, I took off running again at a slightly slower pace from my average 9:50 to 10 at the first half of the race to between 10:30 and 11 the last 6 or so miles. But, NO WALKING!!! My pride would not allow it!!!! About 90% of people between 20 and 26 were walking, but I refused to walk. I knew if I stopped that I would be crawling I would be walking so slow....cause my feet hurt and the last 6 miles felt as if someone had picked up the empire state building and set it down on my quads.....my quads hurt SO incredibly bad!!!!!
Well, when I hit mile 25....I was ready....I settled in and even sped up a little bit. When I came down the long line before making the turn to the finishline.....I threw my arms up in the air and screamed, "THIS IS MY 1ST MARATHON!!!!!" and the huge crowd gathered at the fence cheered like mad!!!! It was awesome!!! I turned the corner and looked up and that sweet sweet finishline was RIGHT THERE....and I actually found the energy deep down inside of me to sprint all out to the finish.....it felt AWESOME!!!!! People were cheering..."That's how you finish!!! Finish strong! Go girl!!!!" and when I crossed and they handed me my medal....I broke down into elated tears of joy!!!! It was such an empowering moment of enduring so much pain and exhaustion.....and heat......and I overcame it all.....and I ran the whole thing!!! I DID IT!!!!! I COMPLETED MY FIRST MARATHON!!!!
I reclaimed what "would have been" my 6 year wedding anniversary today! And, my medal has the date on it to prove it!!! I hope my cheating ex-husband puts that in his pipe and smokes it!!!
I finished in 4 hours and 35 minutes averaging a moving pace of a 10 minute and 15 second mile!!! ;-) Not too shabby for a 1st time marathon!!!! connect.garmin.com/activity/82584742
