I just found that Spar Vital Cappucino "Slim Eis" is 31 calories, .1 gram fat, and 4 grams fiber per ice cream bar! And they are DELICIOUS!
Enjoy!

(If you do Weight Watchers, that's ZERO points - but be careful with too many of these kinds of 0 pts...one a day can't hurt, tho!)

Hello.

My name is Heidi... another H. Are you still in Austria? You said that your German is improving... I was wondering if you were using any language learning tools or anything to help you. I need to improve my vocabulary and grammar. I am quite okay with basics, but want to get better at overall communication.

Cheers,
Heidi

I'm fat again. Ugh!

Deb~ It's been a long time. Just wanted to say "hey". Still in Austria, still no more in shape than when I got here. LOL. Starting up a more rigorous plan and hoping to get those last pounds off (again). Also traveling with work lately, so it has been busy here. How have you been? My German is improving, but of course improving from none at all is not hard to do. :)

Thanks Heather.

Sorry I haven't been around much lately but I am travelling like crazy for work.
In fact, in just few hours I am going to Mexico. Though this time it will be a mix of pleasure and business.

I don't spend lots of time in Austria lately so my German is getting worse ... if that is possible!

How is life?

Hey Deb~

I met an American in my neighborhood, and she also suggested Merkur. I haven't hit one yet. The BioMarkt Maran and the Naschmarkt have kept me in green stuff. Also, for anyone in Vienna, I found fresh cilantro (coriander to the rest of the world) which is key to Mexican flavor at Meinl am Graben. It was ridiculous expensive for many things, but I managed to pick up a couple of things I hadn't found anywhere else and only spent 13 Euro.
Tschuss.

Servus team!
For me Merkur is the best for fresh vegetables.
I always find broccoli, green beans and eggplants (which I adore).

Today I had a bit of a bad start...I travel al lot for business, actually every week. So, I spend a fair amount of time in airports. This morning SB gave me a lift to Wien airport and we had some spare time (my flight was delayed slightly) and decided to have breakfast in the airport restaurant. DISASTER!
It was 9am and they served pizza, muffins, cakes, croissants...sugar and fat basically but 0 fresh fruits or low fat yogurt. We were both so disappointed.
When we ask a member of staff about some fresh fruit, she was so surprised somebody is asking for that!!! and replied they don't sell any. End of story.
I feel this country has a long way to go in terms of nutrition...and please don't start me on smoking.

Thanks, Sophie. I found some yesterday. We have a health food market around the corner, and they have it. They also had some beautiful fresh green beans there that I cooked up for dinner. We saw celery there, which doesn't seem common here. BioMarkt (looks like a chain) has some really nice stuff, lots of whole grain breads and stuff that will be good for my diet. We went to the Naschmarkt, but we didn't have an apartment at the time. I will have to check out the Burnnenmarkt. I am just getting used to where to find things.

you can only get fresh one on markets...but I never saw it in a supermarket...maybe you can try your luck at the Brunnenmarkt in the 16th district or on the NAschmarkt in the 5th district...

Hello everyone~

I dropped in a couple of months ago, and I am now in Vienna. Our apartment is comfortable and we are starting to go shopping again. One thing I haven't seen fresh here is broccoli. I adore broccoli. Any hints?

Finally the smoking ban is approching on Austrian land... however, the rules are so complicated that I fear nothing will really change.

Restaurants still allow smoking and the worst areas are dedicated to non-smoking (i.e one table just next to the toilets!).

I am a bit disappointed that this beautiful country doesn't push for a healthier life style.

INCREDIBLE!
You know I am a fan of the Vital range but this is really incredible. They now do an ice-cream (a real and tasty one!) which has 31 Kcal!
The ice-cream is called Slim ice and is cappuccino taste. It is a must-have item in your freezer.

This must be magic...

I have found something else I absolutely adore..."Zwetschgen". I hope I got the spelling right.
They are small (and extremely juicy) plums.
Fantastic for breakfast or a snack.

Hey girls,
What's your favourite clothing shop in Austria.

I like Mexx and Kleider Bauer; they definetely have my style but too expensive.

By the way, talking about food I am an absolute "fan" of the Vital range. Cornflakes, ham, puten and now even cheese. It is very tasty and low in calories!

I think they sell this Diät Pate thing at Merkur, as well (I'm really wondering what that one is called... I'm sure I bought it a few times).

As a true Austrian (;)), I love everything deep fried. Since that is about the most unhealthy thing I can think of, I tried baking this stuff in the oven - and it works! Just put a little oil (like two teaspoons total) on a baking sheet and the put the Schnitzels, veggies, whatever on it and bake for 30 minutes (you should turn it once).

By the way, I think there are Puten Käsekrainer, too (sold at Hofer, if I recall that right). I can't stand sausages, though, so I'm not sure if there's a difference in calories or fat content.

Do try the "diaet putenpate" or something like that...low in cal and fat, and yummy!

Oh, and of course - you can't have vogerlsalat without Kürbiskernöl is unthinkable! ;-)

Thanks for the tip on the pate. I love it too but kind of gave up on it as it has too many calories.
Will definetely look for it next time I am in Spar.

Vogersalat is also our favourite only with Kernöl though!

One more yummy tip: Griesknockerl suppe (I hope I spelt it right). It is absolutely delicious and so light. Never had it before coming to Austria.

On the naughty side, as it is summer, we must all have at least one Käsekrainer... That is the most delicious sausage I have ever had!

Enough now, going to have my "boring" salad for lunch.

All my tips are yummy, fattening food! No, just kidding...but I do love to treat myself to tafelspitz and zwiebelrostbraten from time to time. I love Austrian food! I have rationalized that tafelspitz is boiled meet and, if I didn't eat the potatoes, might be healthy with the boiled veggies, too! ;-)

BUT A REAL TIP:
I love pate, and SPAR sells a "diät puten pate" (or something like that, but it is diet, that is delicious. When I am in Austria, I have it for breakfast EVERY MORNING on a warm, whole grain roll. YUM!

I also love to get a bag of vogerlsalat and light mozzerella (SPAR sells for cheap, but maybe a real Italian wouldn't like it!!) for a salad at lunch. I miss vogerlsalat, too!

First thing I learned: Germans and Austrians do NOT speak the same language Some examples:

Germany Austria
Aprikose Marille (Apricot)
Guten Tag! Servus / Grüßgot(Hello)
Tomaten Paradeiser (tomatoes)
Tasse Kaffee Verlängeter (coffee)
Wiener Frankfurter (hot-dog sausages)

I love Austria!
