When I first started jogging, I was so slow that walkers would pass me! But I was getting the movements down and the speed eventually came. I am not that fast now, but I am faster than the walkers which was my goal!!! I still do run/walk intervals because I have asthma and it gives my breathing a break. I now do between a 11:30-12:30 minute mile depending on the mileage I am going.

Betty...you should be proud. I can barely run 20 mins without walking LOL!!!!
I have been away from this thread for a while...mainly because I felt soooo inadequate in my time and endurance. I know everyone starts out somewhere, but whenever I felt like I was making progress something always came up and I would have to stop for a while :o/

But thats another issue....anyway, your out there and that is the important thing....I am going to check out the penguin thread myself and get back out there with you.....

ditto, ditto, ditto!! When I started running - on the long country road near my house, I would walk from one electric pole to the next, then run to the next then walk again... and was amazed when I could actually get that far. I don't think it is possible to go 'too slowly' - as long as you are moving and enjoying it! Keep it up!!! AND check out the penguins! The motto there is "Waddle On!!!"

I want to echo Cass almost exactly. I started out barely being able to run, and now I run anywhere from 4.8 to 5.5 mph. It just comes with time, I promise. Suddenly, you find yourself getting faster. Do what is best for you. You're still improving your cardiovascular health and your muscles and your stamina and you're burning calories. It's all good.

I am a penguin, too. I figure I am slow but I keep going and that's more than a lot of people who never get out there.

That's what you're doing, too, Betty and it's an important accomplishment. Whatever your speed, you are fitter and fabulous.

BTW, I have been running for almost a year and average a 16-minute mile. If I have a great day, can hit 14, but that doesn't happen that often. I may always be slow, but that's OK.

And I admire you for doing the solid hour. I can only do that long with at least two breaks and am envious of your endurance :-)

Betty, we all have to start somewhere, and running for an hour, is darn good!! You will with time get faster, work on distance first though before speed. A, perhaps helpful, tip is to listen to music with a sligtly faster pace, perhaps the 4 mph, and try to keep in pace with it. But dont worry too much about speed when your making that kind of distance! I started at a 13 minute mile now down to 10 for short runs and 11 for longer runs

They keep telling us to get in touch with our bodies. Mine isn't all that communicative but I heard from it the other day after I said, "Body, how'd you like to go to the six o'clock class in vigorous toning?" Clear as a bell my body said, "Listen bitch... do it and die."

Ditto what everyone else has said. The important thing is that you're out there running, not how fast you run compared to other people. Keep up the great work!

To find the Penguin thread, click on Spark Team Page at the top of this page, and then look down the list til you find it.

Your story sounds very familiar to mine. When I first started out, it was all I could do to walk at 2.5 mph and run at 3.2 mph. There was absolutely no way that I would have been able to hold a conversation. That was last May/June/July while I was doing the couch to 5k program. It hasn't even been a year, and I can now run in the 4.7 to 5.2 mph range.

It didn't happen overnight, but good stuff rarely does!

You're doing wonderfully - keep up the great work.

Dang, I see LYBBE1631 already beat me to inviting you to the penguin thread. We are penguins, we are slow, and we're dang proud of it!

As long as you get out there, put one foot in front of the other and LOVE it, psh, who care's about speed? (ok ok, I'll admit, most of us do care about speed a little. but, going faster is something that comes with experience. And, "fast" is different for everybody.)

Chronic on again, off again exerciser, trying to break the habit.

Betty: ditto what everyone else has said. We all had to start somewhere, and we all started, and many of us are still, slow. But that's OK. We're out there, trying to improve ourselves. Visit the Penguin thread for more encouragement as Lybbe suggested.

Also realistically as the weight comes off, so will the time -- although let's be honest none of us are going to become like the runners from Kenya. But if we improve on our own times (personal records or PRs, as runners say), then we are just as successful.

Betty Betty Betty - You're RUNNING Girl!! That's what counts. It doesn't matter how fast. Join the Penguin thread - we're all slow runners called Penguins for John Bingham who started the Penguin movement. I wouldn't even worry about how many calories you burn - I don't think there is a system of measurement that works for everybody anyway.

There is nothing wrong with jogging at 3 mph. You need to run the pace that you can do best. With time you will build up your stamina and endurance, then your speed will naturally increase.

I am really slow too! Just keep at it, It is not about speed, just about getting out there and doing it. Lots of people can't run at ANY speed for an hour, you just keep on keepin'on!

Not all who wander are lost.

I am a slow, proud "Penguin" who improves everyday.

I am 5'4" and weigh 196. I have worked up to jogging a 20 minute mile. I usually walk for one mile and then jog two at 3 mph. I see where most everyone else is running at 4 mph and beyond. I can't hardly do that! I do good to go at 3 mph. Also I have just starting jogging in the past few months, hardly ever exercised at all before that. My question is - is 3 mph too slow? I am sure my speed will pick up as I lose more weight but right now 3 mph is all I can handle.

Yesterday I did actually jog for the entire hour for the first time. I was just wondering how many calories I am burning since this seems to be such a slow pace. I can't find anything about jogging 3 mph which makes me wonder if I am the only one who has to do this? emoticon

Even the program for beginner runners to learn how to run faster starts out at over 4 mph. I suppose I could just modify this program and start at 3 mph.

Thanks for you input and suggestions.
