No chance of running outside? I prefer that to a treadmill but I understand it isn't always convenient for everybody.

I want so badly to be able to run. My treadmill at home is not the best. I can't even hear the TV when my treadmill is on. I was doing 3-4 miles consistently but after missing a few days -- am down to nothing again! I am trying to get motivated but I stay so busy and can easily find an excuse for not doing it. Well, I just thought I would vent. Haven't been on here in a while for obvious reasons. Thinking of joining the Y. Maybe that will motivate me. Their treadmills are better too and maybe I could run easier on those. When we had one at work (I work in a medical clinic) I could do well on that one. It was one of these professional ones that are used for heart tests. But now they have taken it down. I have downloaded some of the podrunner on my ipod and still have not got my butt up to move. ~~ sigh ~~ But I'm not giving up! Hope everyone has a great day!

Same temp here today too. Unfortunately I am booked solid until about 8:30. I think I am going to go out for a 30 min run at that time since the temp will still be really good.

Less than one week until it's officially spring. Checked out one of my running routes to see how the "ice" was. Still covered but the streets in my neighbour hood are looking good. We were supposed to get 4 cm of snow today and so far nothing. In fact as I look out my dining room window I see some blue sky. Hopefully when I get back from Cuba I'll be back to running outside. I've just about had it with the treadmill for one winter.

Sorry you had that problem with your back - take it easy.

A lot of us have lost running fitness over this horrible winter we've had up here in the north.

We'll get 'er back - slow and sure.

I'm gonna revive the Penguin Hangout!

I ran this morning, OUTSIDE, for the first time in about 3 months. I had a setback last Fall due to a herniated disc and then it got cold. So I've been hanging out at the gym. Treadmill, bike, ellypticals - ugh. Nothing is better than getting outdoors! All the training indoors helped so I didn't totally flop.

So I'm back. And I'm gonna hang out here if you don't mind. I just can't keep up with the big board.

Well I finally got 3 runs in this week. The first in a very long time. I have started a part-time job and take my stuff along and go for a 1.5 run at my lunch break.

I am so slow and the sidewalks are so slippery I am surprized I am going forward. But at least I am back to running regularly. As long as we don't have a big dip in the temperatures again!

I got lost from this thread too. I haven't been getting in much mileage over the winter and I'm ashamed of myself for not using my perfectly good gym membership to run on the treadmill. However, I decided I will not run on a treadmill just to say I did it. I'm concentrating on outdoors - even though I'm slower than slow because of the snow and ice. There WILL be nicer days coming soon!

WooHoo! Managed a 30mins bout on the treadmill w/o my shins hurting :-) Silly, I know but its a good thing since it attests to the fact I have been working! Makes me want to keep it up and get it going further :-)

Janaaan! I thought you had abandoned us. How happy I am to see a post from you!

I'm glad to hear that you're still running up a storm and checking in regularly. I've fallen off the wagon, but I'm stumbling to get back on. With the coming spring I'm feeling re-energized too, and getting more excited about running. :)

Hello from Tundrapeg. Sigh. When will this end?
Managed a 40 min run yesterday. On the weekend did my second one hour run. Still can't believe I can do that. So, what.....32 days until it's officially spring? I can't wait.

Penguins o Penguins, wherefor art though penguins...of course as I typed this, I remember back to my 9th grade english class and that this Romeo and Juliet quote isn't a question of where one is, but rather why one is named as such. Ah, so much for my being clever.

Where my penguin peeps be? I know I suck at checking in, but I'm here, I'm back to regular running, yaay, and I need to hang with some penguins, yo.

I've taken to running here at the metrodome on Tuesdays and Thursdays with the Minnesota Distance Runners Association, where I'm definately at the back of the pack. there are a few other slow-ish runners, but they're still all faster than me. The only people I pass are walkers, although on occasion, some speedy ones will inch by me.

This weekend is suppose to be warmer, aka it will be above 0, so I may venture outside to run. I'm terrified of slipping on some ice and breaking my leg, so I'll probably have to drive to some place where the parks department keeps everything clear.

In other news, my mom has decided she wants to run a 5k. As such, I need to be both supportive and get my own butt in gear. I can handle that my husband runs faster than me without training, but my mother? Not going to happen.

Today I finished my OHR. I can't believe I can run for an hour. I look back to June when I started the C25K and could only run for 90 secs. Wow. I managed to run 7.4 km in the hour. Pretty sloooooowwwwwwww. lol.

Squeezed in a 30 min run on the treadmill at the Y today. Felt great afterwards. I think when I finish my One Hour Runner I'll try increasing my speed on my 30 min runs. I got an email from a friend today. She thinks I should run the 1/2 Marathon here on father's day. It took me a while to stop laughing and pick myself up off the floor.

-31c is -24f.
It was a bit warmer today but still windy which negates the warmer temperatures. We just can't win. But at least it's sunny!

Oh it's such a typical January here in Manitoba. I've lived here all my life so you'd think I'd get used to it. Woke up to -31c with a windchill making it feel like -46c. I went bowling this morning and hit the Y afterwards. Managed to do 54 mins on the treadmill. When I got in the car to leave, the car actually felt warm inside from the sun. Always a sign that winter is on the wane. I can hardly wait to start running outside again.

It is supposed to be sooooo cold here too. Yuck!

My run this morning was shortlived. My legs are sore from my st on Monday. I elliptisized it yesterday and came in for my run this morning and only made it 10 minutes. My legs felt like lead weights. I'm going to try again and lunch and see what happens, I might just walk.

Hope you all have a good day.

Sounds like you had a good workout.
I managed to squeak in 38 mins this morning after work. Got home and then couldn't fall asleep until noon. Last night and then I'm off for the weekend. But it's going to be too cold to do anything. Windchill warning extreme tonight. It's supposed to hit -30 and with the wind feel like -46 or more.

Good evening! I really should have had a run this morning...but wow, was I tired when I got off night shift. I could hear my bed calling me from half way across the city. There was no way I would have had a good run. Hopefully I'll have the oomph to do it tomorrow morning after work. I'll be glad when this stretch of nights is finished. It sure is busy.

Hi everyone
I am also a Penguin and love John Bingham. I had the pleasure of hearing him talk at the Phoenix marathon this weekend. He is absolutely hilarious and very motivational.
He was asked if someon who runs teh marathin in 2 hours is fitter than someon who does it in 4 and he said no, they are just faster and that they are less fit because they could never stay out there for 4 hours :-)

Winter........it's a love hate relationship. When I got off work this morning it was -31c (-24 f.) Thank god there was no wind! That comes tomorrow with gusts to 70km/hr. Spring can't come soon enough. January is the month I dread every year.

Managed to have enough energy to run on the treadmill this morning . Tried something different though...I did a random setting. It went okay but don't know how often I'll do that.

I don't know where I heard that...I'll research it and let you know. It was on TV...I think.

I can't wait for spring. I'm tired of the winter cold. I love the snow but hate the cold. Ugh!

Hi there!! I have not visited for awhile :-(

I read in the posts the average woman runs 15min miles? Wow, that makes me feel rather good but wondering where that came from?

Do not know about anyone else but it was cold and windy today :-( did not make for a great outside type of day. Last week we were in the upper 60s and 70s! *sighs and hopes spring hurries*

when I'm on the treadmill I mix it up - 5.0 is comfortable, 5.5-6.0 is less comfortable, 6.5 is quite challenging, then I throw in 7-7.5 which for me is an all out sprint. I can't keep up that pace for very long!!

It was nice here yesterday so I went out and did 4.2mi (45 min). It's been a while since I've run that far - since I do mostly treadmill now in this dark weather, I only go a couple miles every day. Looking forward to lighter days!

I'm pretty sure that is accurate.

I know exactly how you feel...there are few girls I know that run at 7.0. I'm a 5.3 to 5.4 girl myself. Slow and easy wins the race. She is younger and has probably been running continually since she was 12...you are doing it, that is all that matters! Pat yourself on the back, or find someone to do it for me.

If the average woman takes 45 mins to run a 5k then I'm liking those numbers. I always thought I was slow. Yesterday when I ran, a co-worker did a treadmill run also. She just motored on it and all I could think of was "omg, am I ever slow". So, today at work I asked her what she usually runs at and she non-chalantly says to me...usually 6.8 or 7.0 !! emoticon And here I thought I was a smarty pants running for 45 mins at 4.7 or 8, and sometimes 9. Granted, she is considerably younger than me but still......

I can send you mine when I get my Zune...what's you address.

Scared the crap out of me the first time and kept me on my toes but now I'm used to it. I might keep it just for the "shock of it". :)

Is it true that an avg pace for a woman to run a 5k is 45 minutes?

I had a little chuckle when I read about the shocking ipod...Maybe it's negative reinforcemtent? When your pace slows it gives you a jolt to get going??? Just a thought....

So after work I hit the fitness facility to do my OHR-W8D2...thought I had to run 41 mins ...that number was stuck in my head all day. Ends up it was supposed to be a 36 min run. Makes up for the piece of chocolate cake I had at work. I sure wish people would quit bringing that stuff in.

I did 1.75 on the TM tonight - I so wasn't feeling very well but did it anyway.

I did some modified planks last night for core strength and holy moly they kicked my butt!

Sometimes my ipod shuffle shocks me...weirdest thing ever. Maybe that is why I want to get a Zune. :)

I did 2 miles at lunch and will do another 2 tonight at the Y while the boys are at the youth boot camp. Should be fun. I also have st tonight...arms.

I do the hills as they come - not much other choice around here! lol. Sometimes I try to go fast up the hill so it will be over faster!

I did 3 miles outside yesterday but my ipod barfed or something because it kept saying I was going zero minutes per mile. Then when I got home and hooked in it froze up and I had to reset and lost all my workouts since 12/9. Big bummer! But I guess it's fixed now??

Today my back was achy so I did a 50 min yoga video and felt much better so did 2 miles on the treadmill while watching a Roseanne episode - I love watching Roseanne while I run!

Gelly, the Nike+ tracks, distance, time, pace and calories burned. Also lets you know throughout the run how many miles you have run, and it counts down the last 400 meters. Also it will let you know if you run a faster time than before.

This morning I got in a 4 mile run. I ran 4 mins and walked 1 the whole time. It was a good run.

Not a lot of hills to tackle in a prairie city though we do have a few man made bumps...great for toboganing so I'm sure they're great for running too. I've been checking out the Zune site. Looks like a neat little toy. Sadly, I just bought an mp3 player last year (it's a sandisk) and works just fine. Maybe I should put the Zune on my wish list for next Christmas.

Thanks! I've been comtemplating that, I've never really had troubles with my knees or shins. I just wanted to know if there was a nike running shoe out there that had good support(for the ipod feature) like my saucony's. I love them. The DH gave my new asics for Xmas but I think I'm going to take them back and stick with what I know!

Thanks for the info on the Zune, I like confirmation!

I too did a lot of research before I bought my Zen--the Zune is a great player and like so many others, has many more features than most of the IPODS for the same price. They have a great service porgram and their reviews are very good.
Good luck with it!
As for running shoes, I went to one of our local running stores where they did a gait analysis and put me in the right shoe. For a long time I was constantly not running due to shin splints and runners kneee-in the three months I have been running in the shoes they suggested, NO PAIN!!!! So, IMHO go to a running store and let them put you on the TM and find out what you need.

Today is yesterdays tomorrow-I am running out of time!

thanks guys. I'm going to buy the new zune next weekend, I can't wait. I've heard some seriously good things about them as opposed to the ipod. The battery life is better and they work with the microsoft system instead of itunes. You can also sync directly with another zune and share music...huge plus.

What do the nike+ do for you? How far you've run? What else? I've never been able to find a good nike running shoe that gives me enough support, flat feet...any suggestions?

I live in a very hilly neighborhood but always run the running trails which don't have a lot of hills. I want to start running in my neighborhood for convienence and want to know how to start tackeling them.

That's a great run Kathy! I'm consistantly running 2 miles now and am going to add another .5 next week. Since the weather is going to be nice tomorrow (45F) I'm going to head outside in my neighborhood, should be interesting.

Thanks for all the great help and suggestions!

Gelly I have not added any pod runners to my ipod yet. I do have the Nike+ running shoes, which I love. As far as hills, I like on a hill. So when I run outside, I can't avoid them. I just take them slowly.

I ran 2 miles non stop on my tredmill tonight in 25 mins and 38 secs. It felt really good.

Hi Gelly!

I tackle hills. I just take my time running up them. Not too slow, but I don't race it because I don't want to burn myself out. It's consistence that works for hills. Learning how to pace yourself to store your energy for the rest of your run.

As for Podrunner. I don't use it myself, but I was thinking about adding them to my Ipod too. Go to Itunes and search Podrunner under podcasts.

Hey Penguins! I decided to have a look that this thread since everyone seems to love it! I now love it!

Wanted to get some info on the podrunners? Where do I go to get some good ones and which ones do you all like best?

And hills, do you all just tackle or avoid?

hello Penguins!

Welcome to our new Penguins.

Shar, I think oonce you run in nice temperatures you might feel different. Give yourself time. The important thing is that you are running for you. Don't worry about races. you don't have to race (or be fast) to be a runner. You become a runner when you decide that it's what you want for you.

Tomorrow I start training for my first 1/2 marathon which will be may 17th. Wish me luck! I'm gonna need some good vibes.

Hi all,
I've just been sitting here reading your posts and it seems to me that a Penguin is what I am. I am a not very motivated runner. With no teadmill my winter running totally depends on the weather (and my level of whimpiness on any particular day). I must say I don't love running, I don't even know if I like it but I do love the way I feel when I stop!! A friend talked me into doing my first 5 km. on New Year's Eve and I completed it doing very very very slow 5 and 1's. My time was 51:28. All my running friends told me once I did a race I would be addicted to running. I don't think I am but I do want to do another 5km to get a better time so I guess it worked. It's been a crazy week but I have written in a run for tomorrow so let's see if I can keep up with you penguins. (I know I can't match your speed or distance - but I'd like to match your motivation and dedication.)
Wishing everyone a happy and healthy new year.

the holidays were fun but exhausting and I didn't get out and run much. I did do some days on the treadmill but it was just plain cold.

Today I got out and did a bit over 3 mi outside because it's 40 and not windy, so that was nice.

I've put on 7lbs since thanksgiving - ooops! I need to update my ticker. goal for 2008 is to take off those 7 and 5 more - and to run run run!
