Carrie- good luck with interview. wish I could take better photos. I just need to practice more!
NERAUS- can't agree more with you on The Bachelor- well most reality TV shows!

Didn't feel like going on the TM (its out in the garage) last night so after a few SP videos I decided to walk/march/kick/MOVE in place while I watched TV for 10 minutes. Quentin was in his bouncer just staring at me. I think that he thinks I am TOTALLY crazy!

I must say that pottery is quite enjoyable. I do like taking a lump of clay and first, pounding it, then molding it into something. Never thought I would the artistic type:)
Rain and cold outside today, so rode Dad's exercise bike and did some strength training. Tomorrow's weather looks great for a run!
Happy Tuesday all.

I agree, I will wait until it feels better, and then start slow. I don't think it was really bad, because there was not bruising or swelling. I may try a short walk tomorrow and tape it before I go out. It feels pretty good, but it's still tight when I foam roll it.

Thanks for the responses!

busy group! SO nice to see the buzz again. Carrie, what a life! You have so much fun stuff going on - so happy for you!
Bobby and Anne, I'm glad the weather isn't getting in your way.
Becca, it must be so good to get outside - way to go!
Kathy, sorry about the calf. Sounds like you've got some good advice to go with. Hope it feels better soon.
Doris, that cabbage recipe is about my favourite! Sometimes we add a little tiny bit of brown sugar for a deeper caramel and some red wine vinegar - sweet & sour. Pottery sounds fun. Can we see pictures?
Nera, my hubby has been on and off that train for going on a couple of years now. So stressful. Sorry to hear it.
Well, after a terrible weekend of vertigo, I got my run in for the week! I may only get the one, baby steps, but so far so good. No GI issues yet - knock on wood and the feet are holding out. You know, they've never been the same since I broke 'em two years ago. I can still feel something off in the right one - almost like a rock in my shoe, but in my foot. Oh well. Soldiering on.
Have a great week everyone!

carrie - your just a busy girl, good luck on interview
kathy- the calf is tricky, i have been battling issues for about 3 yrs now. try a couple walks of a mile or so first to see how it goes, it that goes well do run walk 1 min run 3 min walk a couple times for 15-20 min each then to a 2-2 then 3-1, spread this out over a few weeks. if ANY problems back off again but usually no running for 1-2 weeks min

i did 4.5 miles on the 29er (mountain bike) today took about an hour, tough work out

I am watching the Bachelor and really these people should all be pinned up on an island somewhere. That way they wouldn't infect normal people with their intense silliness. LOL!!!

Hubby's job just told him that his temp position will not lead to a permenant position.. So here we go again only now we have a new car loan to add to the mix. sigh!!!!

Can't give any opinions on tight calf muscles or thesis projects since I have gone to great lengths to avoid both in my life. LOL!!!

Don't remember much else. Hi everyone!
I did a 4 mile run today. Nice weather...about 40ish degrees..perfect!

Kathy, I think I would wait until it no longer hurts or feels tight. Stretch, ice, cross train:)
Today, pottery for 4 hours! I glazed about 12 bowls/covered jars/etc. then I made two new things. The clay was too soft for me. I wanted to make salt and pepper shakers. There is always next week.
I tried a new veggie recipe tonight. It was delicious! Cut a cabbage into thick slices, sprinkle (if possible) crushed garlic on both sides, baste with oil (olive), sprinkle salt and pepper. Do this on both sides. Bake on a greased 9olive oil again) baking sheet at 400 F. Turn over after 30 minutes, bake for another 30ish minutes until edges are brown. It was delicious!!! I don't usually like cabbage but DH does. I would eat this again.

Happy running rooks:)

Hello all!

Today was a rest day. Yesterday's run was kind of rough after a long workout on Saturday. But I was still active - I volunteered with the kitties this morning, and it's about a 3-mile round trip walk to the shelter. Sneaky city exercise!

Exciting stuff - I'm meeting with a potential tutoring client later this week, my photography interview is tomorrow, and I will be taking pictures of the shelter kitties for Petfinder! Life is good. And tonight is my photography class, which I absolutely LOVE.

Last week, during my personal training session, I was doing box steps and on the step down, I pulled my calf muscle. I've been foam rolling it in the morning and using heat and biofreeze at night. It feels ok now, just really tight. Anyone know how long I should take off from running? I was doing really well sticking to my running schedule (even in the cold), and I'm bumming big time. But, I don't want to start back to soon and complicate things.

Thanks!
Kathy

Geez- take a few days off the group and it takes all morning to catch up!

Cardio has been pretty good but I am a little behind on the January Jumpstart SP videos.

Yesterday was amazingly beautiful here 40 degrees above zero! Sure beats the -40 we had last Monday. I took advantage of the balmy weather and got in 4 miles. Longest run since Quentin was born. Feeling great today- not as sore as I thought I would be.

One of my goals for this week- keep up with this discussion board!

Have a fantastic week everyone!

Doris, that sounds like good core work too! WTG on the run, Carrie. I went swimming with my client today, still no go on the run. Hoping to wake up un-dizzy in the morning so I can run between classes. Fingers crossed.

Kirsten, nope, not boring to me either. I worked with many teens with disabilities in a public school. Burn out there was pretty high as well.
No formal exercise today. Bummer. It was 50 degrees out but we had to go to the boat to replenish the diesel supply. So, I lugged 50 gallons of diesel fuel, from the ground to the trunk, to wheelbarrow to boat to, finally, pouring them into the fuel tank. Good upper body workout!!

kirsten- boring no, but it will be an interesting take on their perspective. ya know i see these type of people all the time at my mom's nursing home and never really looked at them that way. i have a good friend that work at a home for mentally / physically challenged kids and i know there was burnout there. good luck

Boo cramping!
Yay Carrie's awesome interview!!!

My thesis - so glad you asked! Here in Canada, "unregulated health care providers" like developmental service workers, respite workers and personal support workers increasingly provide peri-medical care in private and group homes - things like bathing, feeding and 'personal care', as well as medication administration/documentation, g-tube feeding, ostomy care and tracheal-suction for people with disabilities. No one knows much about the experiences of these workers, what education or ongoing professional support they receive or how safe they are in their work - not to mention how the safety of their clients is protected.

My thesis project is a qualitative (phenomenological working toward a grounded-theory approach) study looking at the lived experiences of people working with adults who have developmental disabilities like cerebral palsy, trisomy 13 (Down's syndrome), etc. I'm hoping to find out what their work is like, what education prepared them for it, how safe and satisfied they feel at work and so on. In the first phase I'll interview people who work in the field now. In the next phase, if I can get ethics board approval, I'd like to interview people who have left the field - expand the discussion into burnout or 'compassion fatigue.'

Does that sound boring to 'normal' people like you guys? I'm so pumped about it I can hardly contain myself!

Still dizzy but getting better. Hoping to try a swim tomorrow.

Woke up, washed up, and hit downtown to do Run Group on the Pinellas Trail! My legs were screaming over the last week to run! Cramping was the big thing! Great warmup for next weeks Half! We had breakfast together then walked the Arts & Crafts Show! It was a great day to be outside!

Wow, Carrie, I can't wait to see that article!!
Roofers? Balmy weather? Well, enjoy it. You put up with the year-round bugs and heat waves, after all!
Doris, that toe sounds awful. Hope hubs is back to his old self soon? Or, is that a gypsy curse??? I don't know your hugs after all!
Sprouts, don't be hurting yourself now. Stay healthy and get ready for all those beautiful springtime miles just around the corner.
I hope.
I'm hanging in, but having a rough week. I was *just* starting to think I could round the top of this little hill and - blammo - vertigo. It's so unpredictable! I feel like I can't plan anything ever and it's starting to really get me down. I've learned that getting up and moving around helps me to accommodate faster, but it's not comfortable!
Anyhow, no runs and no workouts this week. I'll just have to start again. Again. Next week.
This semester is a doozy. Did I tell you guys about my thesis project yet?

Monty, I am glad you had a nice day in the sunshine. I enjoyed my snow globe run this morning as it was 25 degrees and NOT windy:) Yep, a nice day here too, just not sunny. Its kinda nice to be out there when its flurrying. I wore hot pink so drivers (two cars in 3 miles) could see me. No worries.

Roofers got here most early today and got busy repairing a roof vent leak. I ran out to do breakfast to avoid the initial noise of repair! I have someone coming in shortly to replace my old guest bath hardware in the guest bath as my sis (LEC22041) is coming to visit next week! I'm so happy about that! So, it's a good day! AND I believe I'm running Miles for Mimosas tomorrow!

Had a shot of cortisone in my toe yesterday. It hurt like #*&^#$*& until this afternoon. Now, its feeling OK. Tomorrow will be the test.....will I cry when I put on my sneakers? If this works, phew, if not, then another surgery to remove the arthritic growth so it will flex without hurting. Sheesh.
DH is trying to find a comfortable position to sleep in. He is crabby but its understandable so I am being nice:) Now, I will spend time in the NM if anyone wishes to join me....I am soaking in the chocolate hot tub with a glass of bubbly......

Well it warmed up today and should be somewhat nice for the next week. On monday when it was -15 for a high we went car shopping for my son. Another loan to wonder how to pay back. But the other day a lady in a pickup just like my son's went off and overpass and crashed 50 feet below. So I am very happy we have him out of that stupid truck.

I have done a week now of doing 30 minutes a day of exercise. So far it has been either exercise bike or treadmill. Nothing super fast or strenuous but still consistent movement is good and something I have been missing for awhile.

HEY!!! Hi, Becca! Nice to meet you!
Trish- that sucks...
Kirstin- wow!!! You have alot on your plate! I will keep you in my thoughts.
All is well here.. balmy teen temps today. ;) I did a great hip/leg yoga with DD and I could feel the tightness in hips and sides/flexors and hammies. EE YOW! Still not running yet-this weather came at a perfect time for me to rest this Achilles. I think the return to a neutral shoe at the same time I started doing 2-3 sprints sessions per week really put the kabosh on my calves. Achilles and ankles are not happy. But, I am resting them and will have to do different HIIT workouts for my other days. One for speed training on the road, the others for fat burning on bike or Turbo Fire, perhaps?
Time for shower. I got alot accomplished today: namely, cleaning off, throwing away and organizing my computer desk. Let's see how long it looks decent.....

Kirsten, sorry to hear that you are having a tough go of it right now:( I am sending warm hugs and squishes your way.
Trish, kinda sucks about volunteering when one person can ruin what was fun. Squishes and hugs to you too.
Becca, why? Why not yesterday? Hmm....
Who else, um, having a moment here where I have forgotten what I read.
So, DH had his surgery yesterday. It went fine but the damage was more than expected. Its looking like he will be out of work for 12-16 weeks instead of 8-12. Oh well. He should mostly recovered for the beginning of sailing season:)
I had a run/walk this morning. It was a tropical 5F when I set out. The wind was not blowing so it wasn't bad:) Went to yet another Dr. today for my toe pain. Had a shot of cortisone, its killing me right now but should be better tomorrow. If cortisone doesn't work, then we have a more invasive procedure done (surgery to remove bone spurs and some arthritic crap). Sheesh. I thought I was DONE with injuries.

Happy running, stay warm Rooks

Yesterday was the first time in 37 days that I did not run or powerwalk emoticon It was just too cold to try and do either at work. Today is a different story, at 20 deg F I ran 2 miles during my lunch. This may be my routine until I get the treadmill repaired or replaced.

jump right in like I never left! BOBBYD31 "insisted" I rejoin the team, so here I am. I had a SP break for quite awhile but I am back at it and lovin' it!
welcomed baby boy #3 in June. Finally decided it was time to get back to pre-baby weight. Plus I had to defer my marathon entry last May so I signed up to run the HM THIS May. Time to start training for that.
Weather had been brutally cold in Minnesota but I making do with the treadmill, ST, and videos.

I learned a lot over the last three years here. Initially, everything seemed so overwhelming. Perseverance and patience were key. I learned to take it slowly, methodically, and "one bite at a time!"You stay positive, focused, and, next thing you know, you've taken ownership of your life!

This afternoon, I have two meetings, one as a City Committee member, and the other as a Sponsorship Chair for Dunedin Relay for Life. I focus on my tasks and goals. I let everyone else show off their lack of intelligence should they feel the need to share! I believe some just don't get the concept of volunteering!

Everyone have a great day!

Hi gang! Trish, I hear you on the can't play nice frustration! I have to quit some stuff this year too - and all because of just one person. sheesh. Well, here's to more fulfilling and worthwhile pursuits. emoticon

So it looks like a lot of us are in the deep freeze huh? I drove my kid to a school I can see from my house today! I'm not trying to be a wimpy mama, but it was ridiculous out there! My car is soooo unhappy :o( Day one of actual tracking is going ok but all my exercise has been with Coach Nicole indoors so far.

Oh, I hope I survive this semester folks. My first time with five courses, clinical is in an acute care (post-surgical) setting and I'm preparing to start research and a thesis next semester (have to get ethics board approval in the next couple of months). Plus I've had some health issues and 'the girls' are going to have to go under the knife soon. Not looking forward to that! Hubs and I have had some issues with the taxman that resulted in a pretty lean Christmas and we're on the rocks as well. Good thing we're too poor to get divorced - that just might be the thing that gets us through!

Honestly, it's like staring at an elephant I have to eat - I just don't know where to start.
*sigh* emoticon
Well, back to the books. Going for a dreadmill run tomorrow after class :o) See you after that. Stay warm, stay safe and have a good one!

Hi all!

Trying to make the most out of this chilly day... I might do some serious bundling in a little bit and go out for a short walk. I can't stand being cooped up in the house like this! I don't know the last day that I haven't gone out...

It's a balmy 47 degrees in Dunedin! All looks good, I might be joining my Run Group this evening, remembering to do a proper warmup beforehand! I'll be happy with a well postured 5K. Hopefully I'll get a longer run in during the rest of the week. Got a Half on Jan 19.

Not nearly as cold as other folks are reporting but NJ feels about -13 today. We rarely have temps like that. I did feel a bit of the temperature drop last night at a somewhat balmy 22 when I had to run outside (for day 37 of my streak) since my treadmill died!!!!!! I am quite upset by that. Today is too cold to walk at lunch so I am looking at running in place at home to keep my streak alive. I will spent my lunch looking into my extended warranty and seeing if they will cover the repair (motor burned out) or if I need to buy a new one. This will not stop me!

Have a wonderful day and stay warm!!!

Hey all,
Trying to figure out why some people can't figure out how to play nice....I am really sad that this will be the last year I volunteer for ringette...not sure if I even want my kidlets to play next year...that would be their decision though.

Tomorrow I'm doing a wee jaunt, hopefully it will go well.

Hugs!

HI!!! Had a nice Saturday 6 mile run, then 2 hr of snow shoveling yesterday along with hip ST and squats. Today was 5 miles on the basement bike(that is about all I can handle for attention span) and then pushups and "a" 1 min. plank. Some more hip ST/stretching and rolling of the darned calves.
Feels like -42 right now. I have never felt this cold of weather in my life! I made the mistake of letting 18 yr dd go to her bf's house today to hang out. Now the roads look shiny and the frigid temps are wishing she was home. :( Also, before I realized the magnitude of this weather,I let 17 yr ds drive to cousins' house to bring some over for the night and tomorrow. OMG! I walked to the mailbox and was instantly frozen! Sheesh! I hope they both drive super safe AND that their cars stay running.
Ya'll are doing great on keeping up the workouts and/or starting fresh. Trish- glad to see you are thinking of a race! :) makes me happy. Don-Welcome to this crazy crew! I love each and every one of these friends here. This site is amazing and these people are the reason why I am running 4 1/2 yrs after starting.
Stay warm, everyone!
