Robin here...I need your vote!

I made it to the Top 10 for the LiveHealthy Iowa Dream Team challenge. If I can finish in the Top 5, I will join a team to lead Iowans in their effort to lose weight and live healthier lives!

This is very exciting, but voting ends this Saturday, Dec. 7!

You can vote for Robin Norfleet here:
http://www.livehealthyiowa.org/aspx/Publ
ic/Page.aspx?pid=13675

Live Healthy Iowa is wellness program that offers many challenges throughout the year to promote healthy living in the state. The biggest is the 10-week challenge at the start of the year.

This is a unique opportunity to help inspire others to healthier lifestyles! If I win, I will get access to professional trainers and other support, and will, in turn, share my experiences and encourage others through a blog, Twitter and Facebook.

The Dream Team is chosen to show everyone that healthy living is possible even with varied and busy lifestyles, and I would love to be such an example! I'm hoping to run a 5k with my sons in the spring.

But I need every vote I can get -- it is an extremely tight race!

Thank you for your support!

Just to finish up, I was just shy of my monthly goal of 45 miles at 41.8 miles. I am happy with how much I did do. It was an improvement over October by 10 miles.

DH is home:) I missed him but I understand why he went to see his Mom. This is her first holiday season since her husband died.
Only a few more days of work, then I join the ranks of the unemployed! I can't wait:)

Hello all!

Suezette - homemade applesauce is amazing. I didn't make any this year, but you have me thinking that I should!

It's a whopping 28 degrees F, and I am dressed for a run. When there is no wind, I actually really like running in the cold weather.

Trish, that is awesome!

Carrie,
I just got back from a 4 mile walk! And my house smells like apple cinnamon! The applesauce that has been in the crock pot smells heavenly!
I also rode the bike for 30 minutes.

Sunday is my last marathon for this year and the last one until 2015. I am not running any full marathons in 2014, only halves. My main focus is going to be on strength training and getting everything nice and tightly toned!

Hello all!

Trish, I love reading about your kiddos!

Went to the gym this morning, and then hubs and I took a 5-mile walk around the city. It was a little breezy, but not too chilly. That said, it feels awfully good to be sitting down in the warmth enjoying a glass of wine.

Trish, your son is growing up to be a fine, compassionate young man. How proud of both your kids you must be:)
Nera, I have decided to do that as well. I started about a month ago, just running at whatever pace I felt for as long as I felt. The first week, I think I ran/walked 2-2.5 miles in about 35 minutes. Not too fast, not too slow. Now, I am up to about 3 miles in not much more time and I feel good while doing it. Phew.
Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving or just a great work day:)

Aah Trish that is so sweet. You got a great kid there.

I was on the treadmill this morning. I have decided to treat running as a more natural process. I don't worry about times or distances or anything. I start walking on the treadmill and when I feel like I just start running at what ever pace works for me that day. Today I was on a 19 minute mile pace. Then I run until my body says okay that's good. The trick is to listen to my body not my head because it says WTF every time I get going. LOL!!! Today I ran .42 of a mile. I thought that was great. Next time might be more might be less it will be what ever that day brings.

Hey everyone:)

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving (except for my Canadian Friends who have already bursted with turkey:):)

Really cool that a ton of us got out and did a turkey trot or other races!!!

My cool thing is that Monkey is really thinking about us...he saw something he thought his sis would like, and did everything he could to make it happen. He told me yesterday that he wants me to feel special this Christmas...he is going to make sure it happens...

How cool is that!!

Love you all!

Went to breakfast with D then came home and continued preparing Thanksgiving Dinner. Oh, in between stirs and bakes, I also signed us up for the Excalibur 10 Miler in Viera, Fl on Mar 2, 2014! Still eyeballin' JASR!

I'm also getting my clothes together for my flight back to DC for a week on Tuesday. I'm going to celebrate my sis's birthday with her and also do our first run together, a Jingle Bell 5K.

I recently went to an acupuncturist to help with my hot flashes. She mentioned that I'm not in balance - I'm too damp. You can be damp or dry, and you should be a mix to be in balance. She told me about this product - South River Miso. It comes in different flavors. It's like a paste. You can take a teaspoon of it, but it in a plastic bag, and take it in your lunch. Later in the day, instead of tea or coffee, you stir it into hot water and make a nice soup to drink. I like the broth, but not the soy that's in it. So I drink it until I get to the bottom and then pitch the rest. It's pretty good, and loaded with good stuff for your body.

I got it at my local Kimberton Whole Foods.

Happy Turkey Day!

Okay happy thanksgiving to everyone. My tea I bought just a week ago is not what is suppose to be. I have made it three times and it doesn't taste like it did before. So I either got the wrong stuff ( which seems odd since I take in the tin that has the name of the tea on it and say give me this) or they changed it. I am going to go there this weekend and see if I can get something else because this stuff tastes like dirt.

I planned on a nice bath this morning but my son just took a half hour shower(not kidding) may have to heat up water on the stove so I can clean up. LOL!!!!

So, tonight after work, I baked 10 pounds of potatoes on the grill, as the oven is out of commission due to a propane leak, then, smashed them with cheese and butter and re-stuffed them. Tomorrow, they go to both brother's for eating. My tiny fridge has room for one dozen eggs and 2 pans of potatoes and not much else:) I am ready for DH to come home! I think this is the first Thanksgiving we are apart. Oh well. His Mom needed him for her first holiday without his Dad.

happy turkey day, happy turkey trot races and all that jazz.

Doris, wishing your Husband well on his recovery!

Debby, don't press getting back into your run. After injuries, I always go back to square one and work through it to work up to where I was. Better to get into it gradually then risk down time due to injury. That so sucks!

Bobby, thanks for that great info. I just did a request to join the JASR group on FB. As I will be visiting my sis more in Northern Virginia, I might be able to work out doing the JASR Half. It depends. If I get my sis back on the track, we might do something smaller for her. I just need to look at my calendar. My first 2014 Tri will be St Anthony's, end of April.

Today, I'm focused on insuring a have everything for our healthy Thanksgiving Dinner at home. I've already made my fave Cranberry-Pomegranate Relish, Broccoli Woccoli, & have a beautiful Turkey Breast for an oven tanning! I just thought of my honey glazed carrots and few other sides. I'm cooking just for D & me this year. It's going to be good quality nice & quiet time as I am leaving to go back up to DC on Tuesday for a week with my sis.

Soooo, DH has injured himself. He has torn his rotator cuff. Actually, torn one tendon and totally ruptured another. He needs surgery to fix it and then will be very restricted on arm use for 10-12 weeks. Good thing my parents' house is empty! or will be soon.
Work, blech. Just one more week then I am unemployed:) Hurray, at this point.

I got on the treadmill today. I ran the last quarter of the mile very sloooowly LOL!!! You know what hurt the most after not running for a good year? My ankles. The muscles that run up and down the outside of the ankle. I assume they deal a lot with balance so that is probably why they get worked out more. I am sure I am probably not real solid in my running stride. Was tough but felt good to be active again. Lets see if I can keep this up.

Update on heat. I purchased a huge inside kerosene heater today. Its now a sauna on the boat. I kinda like it! The heater will be off when we are sleeping or not home. No formal exercise today but I wrestled the mattress around for about an hour and was up and down the boat ramp many times. I am pooped and my back is sore:( Me thinks me needs more core strength exercises........

OMG! If I didn't know any better I would think that we were sailing, not tied to a dock. The winds are crazy!!! And its stinking cold:) DH is off to West Virginia for the week and I am here, chilly, with no working oven. So, grill or take out all week. Today the wind is far to gusty to keep the grill lit. Take out it is!

Oh, I'm looking to see if I can get JASR into my schedule for 2014! I can't seem to find the website as one IP is showing the domain name as expired. I'm thinking I might combine this with a visit to my sis in DC if possible..

Okay tough week even though I had two days of vacation. LOL!!!! Son fell monday in his apartment and slammed his ribs in to a bench(don't ask how I don't even understand and I am his mother. LOL!!) The clinic said no break or cracks but didn't xray. Thursday at work(Shopko) he picked up something heavy and said he felt his side pop. Work let him go to the doctor where an xray still said not breaks or cracks. Gets a note that says no heavy lifting(heavy is not defined) and goes back to work.

If any of you have sons you will understand why I was sitting at home going nuts. The kid doesn't have his insurance card, doesn't ask the doctor to define heavy lifting, doesn't ask about 6 other questions that he should have. Sigh!!!!!!!

I find out my vitamin D level is way low so I am back on prescription Vitamin D pills. 50,000 units twice a week for 8 weeks. On the plus side my blood sugar level is fine and is a point lower than last year. My scale said I lost half a pound. But when I moved the scale to a spot with better light(laundry room where I keep the scale is pretty dark) I had gained 3.5 pounds. I know from my clothes that isn' t right. Just to prove the scale is stupid I got dressed and weighed myself again. I weighed 1.5 pounds lighter while fully dressed than I did when not. LOL!!!!!

Good Morning, All!
emoticon
As much as I wanted to be with the Cheer Squad at the Women's Half Marathon, when I got a call from my Granddaughter yesterday wanting to see us at breakfast this morning, I knew I had to be there. She's my priority. We brought some things back from my Mom's condo for her and wanted to get them to her this weekend. She was disappointed that we couldn't meet yesterday evening so this was not a contest. We've got it going on when we realize our priorities.

Hello all!

Bobby - I think about JASR all the time! I need to get ready for the 8 miles!

It's super windy here today, like 25mph winds. Sheesh!

Monty, sorry about the road rash. Ouch!
Yep, we are wintering on the boat about 1/2 time and staying at my parent's house for some of the week. I go to a pottery studio near my folks house so I will be close for 2 days a week of potting? Then, I think I will substitute teach 1-2 days a week near the boat. Should be about what I was making at work and the hours are better!
A run today. It was brisk. No, it was cold. But, I was warm once I got going. I have noticed a big difference in speed now that I am not counting the miles but the time. I have no real goal at this point, just to stay injury free!

Hello all!

Miles for Mimosas sounds like my kind of run!

Today is a non-running day for me, so I'll hit the gym for some weights.

Happy Friday!

I've fallen twice in the last 3 years I've become a runner...both times at night, both on a sidewalk! Last night was the second! I worked hard on my posture when I run. Last night was no exception. After 2.5 miles, I slipped on a rock on the sidewalk. Minimal road rash on my arm & shoulder with a nice badge on my knee. Shoulder's a bit sore but whatever. I even wore a Brooks light hat..very cool..but I wasn't looking down as it would be bad posture! Such is life!

Hell yeah, I'm running tomorrow. My Running Club's Saturday morning run is "Miles for Mimosas!"

Good morning all!

I'm on a roll! When I got up today, I put on my running gear right away. It helped me do 2.6 miles! I am thrilled to be back in a fitness routine.

My 1st 5K was the St Petersburg Times Turkey Trot Nov 2010. The event is now the Tampa Bay Times Turkey Trot. We run it every year since it is our Run Anniversary. This year is no exception. Since our first, and over 45 5Ks later, I cut my time in half!

I already scored my plane ticket back to DC on Dec 2 so I can be with my sis on her Birthday Dec 3. I'll also be there for the Memorial Mass my Mom's church is having for her as well as a special tribute some friends are having for "Miss Lili" locally. I'll be visiting my sister a lot more in the future. I will also run more races up there. I hope to get my sister back into running & training for a 5K. I'll enjoy pacing her.
emoticon emoticon

Last night, I did my practice run at Run Club with a friend I had actually ran with during a race in May. I did a PR at that race which also told me I could run a faster pace. It was the beginning of getting down to my present PR. Last night's run resulted in a great pace with ease.

I'm attending a Team Rally Party for the Dunedin Relay for Life tonight. I was called yesterday and asked to speak on achieving goals. I was never told why they wanted me but it gives me confirmation I'm doing something right!

Hello all!

Another beautiful day. Cold and sunny. I'm dressed for the gym for when the mood strikes me.

This evening, the Young Adults at my church are serving dinner at the church's shelter. I'm in charge of bringing salad and chili toppings.

Good Morning, Y'all!

I am reminded there are certain life events over which we have no control. We do have control over our response to those events. Staying positive emphasizes ownership of my life and keeps me mentally healthy. We all miss my parents. I can't think of better inspiration and motivation than to honor them daily in the way I live my life. I need to walk the walk, be thankful for what I have, and pay it forward to others. We make life good.

Hello all!

It's pretty windy today, but I bundled up and ran anyway. It took me a while to get myself out of bed - it's hard to get up when it's still dark!
I'm off to take care of the kitties... I have a volunteer shift at the shelter this morning.

An absolutely gorgeous day here in NH. There was a wind gust this morning that blew one of our rubbermaid containers off the boat. I watched it float merrily up-river. Now, I have to find a new one as that was covering a leaking window! It is easier to keep the rain out than deal with it once its in.

Enjoying a lovely day off. Had a blood draw to check Vitamin D and blood sugar levels. They check those on me every year. Now having a cup of a new vanilla Chai tea. Not sure if I like it or not. Later some thrift store shopping. I love having mondays off.

It is an absolutely gorgeous day in Philly. It's warm, the sun is out, and there's just a little breeze. Hubs and I are going for a little trip this afternoon to check out an overgrown cemetery so I can take some pics.
Got an early Christmas present this morning - hubs signed me up for a winter photography class! It's at a great little art gallery about two blocks away from me; I took a class there over the summer and loved it.

I set out for a walk this morning and ended up doing speed work:) It felt great!!! Then, the sails and other canvas came off the boat in preparation of shrink wrapping for the winter. A bunch of marina folks were all tempted to just go sailing instead but there was no wind......sigh

Linz,
Congrats on signing up for your first 10K. I just did my first in Oct. My first 5K was in June, and it was not easy for me then, but I breezed through the 10K after all my training runs, and so can you.

I first took my most recent 5K race time, and used the race calculator at runnersworld to estimate a goal time (even for my first race). go to http://www.runnersworld.com/tools/race-tim
es-predictor

Then I used the pace wristband calculator to estimate my splits by mile. go to http://www.runnersworld.com/tools/race-tim
es-predictor (just a ball park)

Use these calculators to find a pace that will work for you, not necessarily to define a finish time (although I needed a goal), since this is your first 10K race.

For my race, I planned on 2.5 minutes at 11:30 mm, then a 1 minute recovery at 12:30 mm. I had run a trial 10K 2 weeks before my race, and I had splits, so I knew the numbers the race calculators gave me were realistic. I also wanted to know if I could sustain a 10K using 11:30/12:30 paces, which I did. A real confidence builder.

During the race I kept to these paces until the last 2 miles, then I ran by how strong I felt, and really turned it on the last half mile. I felt strong, and I finished strong. My average over all pace was 10:59, so much better than I expected. My first mile was faster because of my adrenaline. The last two miles were around 10:30 mm. I am comfortable at this pace for a 5K, so I felt I could push myself.

Now I also did tempo runs at 11:30 mm and race pace repeats at the track at 10:30 mm.

I hope this isn't confusing, as I really find it helpful for me. In the end, find a pace you are confident and comfortable with. If you have been increasing your long runs to 5 miles, you should be well prepared. Good luck. Finish strong, and have fun.

Bobby is right about a run/walk method. I just modified it so I could run the whole race.

linz- do a run walk method, run 3 min then walk 2. do not try to run the whole thing it may lead to an injury or skip it all together, there will be other races. love your journey, 90 lbs is awesome

kms- nice but love the flip flop issue

janet - not sure we go a few times per year but hit several small wineries on any given weekend, come on over and we can find a few. find a way to keep running 3 times per week, wednesday would be the perfect day. if you frequently go 3 or more days with out a run you will begin to lose conditioning slowly

suezette- such a funny girl.... you'll probably have some in march if you make JASR

doris- lets take one down and pass it around....... love my electric blanket

carrie- good for you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello all!

Part of me was trying to talk myself out of running this afternoon, but I went anyway and I feel great. I teach a toddler class tonight and then I have to plan tomorrow's preschool lessons. It's a busy week!

We have enough heat on the boat now so that it is almost comfortable in all areas. Gotta love the electric blanket and whoever invented it!:)

Bobby Ė When is your next trip? That sounds like something I can do.

I havenít been doing much running lately since it is dark in the mornings before I leave for work, and already dark by the time I get home, so I have substituted my runs for gym time (cardio and ST). This isnít bad since I never used to do them, but I miss my runs and I am also scared that I will undo all the improvement that I have been seeing. I still run on Saturday and Sunday though and I will try to dedicate 1 or 2 evening to running indoors (which looks so boring). emoticon

Have a nice Wednesday everyone!

So, I'm rather proud of myself this morning. I had to come to our data center today that is in another county, but I'm determined to get my monthly miles in and Wednesday is one of my running days. So, I packed a gym bag and went to the YMCA that is on the way to the DC. We are permitted to use any YMCA in our county. I've never been there, so it was a learning experience, and I haven't showered at a gym and dressed for work in many years. I forgot my flipflops, so I showered in my socks, then wrung them out and put them in the plastic bag I keep for dirty clothes. It was an experience, but now I can be prepared for next time - and I got my 3 miles in.

I have my first non-5K race next weekend ... I'm not even remotely ready, it feels like. But I need to push beyond 5Ks! So I'm doing the Marine Corps Turkey Trot 10K on the 23. I'm nervous as all get-out!

Now, the bonus is, when I run at the gym, I'm running at faster paces without feeling like death, so I'm pretty excited about that. :)))) (My average pace was 4-4.5 MPH, I'm getting closer to 5-5.5 MPH now.)

Then I'm doing a 5K in Dec. just for fun ... And because it's near a place I LOVE shopping. :P Can't go wrong with that at Christmas, right? :P

Any thoughts on how to push through the 10K without dying? My goal is to finish around 1:30. :)

Linz

Starting the journey at 360 lbs.

Goals:
18 lbs. (5%) - Reached Feb. 3
36 lbs. (10%) - Reached Mar. 24
54 lbs. (15%) - Reached May 25
72 lbs. (20%) - Reached Aug. 9
90 lbs. (25%) - Reached Oct. 27
108 lbs. (30%) - Next up!

This is only the beginning for me ...

I had a great workout last night - circuit training and my trainer really stretched out my IT band and my hip - wow does it feel loose today!

Then I had a 1 hour sports massage with hot stones. I have never had a massage with the hot stones, it was Awesome! I highly recommend it.

Hoping to get a run in tomorrow. I have to go out of town for the day, so it will be tricky to fit one in.

Pottery, window washing, grocery shopping, then beef stew at Mom's for dinner. Blech. I do not like beef stew! I ate the potatoes and carrots and one small piece of beef. I don't care for beef. Oh well. DD and DH and my parents and niece all love it.
Tomorrow, a short run in the morning before the day gets started.
