Hey all,
Great weekend going on...Missy has gone 2-1 in her soccer tourney, and is playing for gold tomorrow. Tomorrow is supposed to be super hot, so really glad her game is before noon.

Pen, for the first time ever, the RR wouldn't let me go for a 50 meter jog outside (it wasn't raining)...the service I got was substandard, and they guided me to the wrong sneaks...so weird as I have dealt with them for a LONG time. Huge hugs to you sweetie, love you!!

Mirage, so cool with the Tri's!!!

Anyhow, gotta fly,
Trish

Took G & D to brunch at a cafe where a friend of ours was singing. G loved it. We finally...and reluctantly.. to her home to Mommy. Finally made it home where I solidified my entries in both of my Triathlons in July & August. Challenges are good and training is better! I sure won't waste my time on the sidelines any time soon!

Pennylynn - I agree wholeheartedly with the advice to forget about brand names and what you have done in the past. Get analyzed and move forward. My running store allows you to return shoes in thirty days if they've been used on the treadmill only so check store policies.

Good afternoon. Nothing good here to report and I am tired of the same old bad junk so nothing to report there either. Weather has been wonderful last two days, finally.

Hi all,

This afternoon I was at an all-you-can-eat ice cream festival. It was for a good cause, to fight juvenile leukemia; totally worth it. I don't think I'll want ice cream again for a while...

Just checking in, folks. Working hard to get my diet on point and building endurance. Got another race scheduled mid-July, and maude willing, every month through the end of the year. November is the only tricky month, because I *might* have to fly myself to Vegas.

Today Joshy and Missy took part in a talent show...both did really well:) Tomorrow my daughter is graduating from Elementary School...dang, I can't even think about it without tearing up. Wish Don were here, but I know he is watching from a WAY better vantage point. I will post pics...suffice it to say that she looks like an angel in her dress:):)

Penny, I agree. Go to a reputable running store and get fitted for shoes. The store I go to lets me "wear the shoes" on a short jog around the block to make sure they are comfie:) I even exchanged a pair of shoes once that caused blisters on one heel.
Me, a run today, mostly a run anyway. I did do some walking as it is stinkin' humid out!!
I must say that I am loving living on the boat. We have everything we need and no "stuff" cluttering up the place:) Its amazing how few clothes I actually do need.

Happy running all

Hey Penny!
Congrats on the first week. Embrace it and have fun with it!

Firstly, With your ankle concern, I would have a doctor check them out.

Point blank! Forget brands for the moment. Go to a reputable running store, get a gait analysis, and see what they suggest for the right shoe. I'll bet you will need a shoe which will provide strong stability.

Also let them know your concern with your ankle. In the past 6 months, I've work a "110% Blitz Knee Compression Sleeve" while recovering from a slight injury. I've also worn a foot sleeve to prevent Plantar Fasciitis and heel pain.. KT Tape really works and many use it for prevention as well.

Check this video out as an example of an alternative. I love KT Tape.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ySkXxXCYbg

There are simple exercises that can also strengthen your ankles and knees.

Stay positive, train smartly, run within your comfort zone, and listen to your body! Most of us have learned by experience and want to pass it on so others won't create permanent damage. Be well!

So I finished my first week of training on my walk/jog 5K program this morning! emoticon emoticon I know I need better shoes. One of my co-workers is an avid runner and has flat feet like me and recommended a certain brand but I had someone else suggest getting fitted for shoes at a running store...what do you all recommend? I don't have an issue laying down money for good shoes. I have been a Nike die hard for years. They have the best support for my feet but I know nothing about running shoes specifically.

Also, does anyone wrap or tape their ankles or knees? I have a weak ankle that is prone to sprains and I think I will start wrapping it as a preventative measure just because it will give me more confidence mentally. I am fearful right now that one wrong step will cause an injury. I have always used ACE bandage. Does anyone use anything else they recommend?

Thanks everyone! The first week was a really good one. My goal this week is to add some strength training to the mix.

Hello all,

I'm headed to the beach today for a much-needed escape from reality. It is HOT HOT HOT with the heat index near 100. Sheesh. And there is an air-quality warning - it gets really nasty in the city, I am learning.

Have a super day!

Had the best time running with a 6 year old during our ARC Run Club training run. It emphasized the fact that you need to embrace the fun in running! I'm so thankful and blessed to be a runner now! No question, you learn a lot about life on the run!

Just finished the Seattle RnR Half on Saturday. Lining up my race wish list through the end of the year.

Trish, seriously thinking abut Kelowna Wine Country Half on September 7 (as opposed to Okanagan in October). It looks beautiful, and would free me up for the Biggest Loser Half in Seattle in October.

I have made quilts out of t-shirts before. Not racing t-shirts though. It can be a fun project though a bit putsy. All the shirts have to be cut then put interfacing on the back so they don't curl up.

I stepped on the scale for the first time in over a month. I am up but not near as high as I thought I would be so I guess that is a good thing. I may use part of my vacation to day to reflect and reorganize some priorities.

So, Nera, I was thinking about your quilts.......maybe you should make them for RRs out of the t-shirts given at races so they can look at it and remember and not have to store all those t0shirts!:) Just sayin'.
Trish, I would love to come visit you!
I am planning to talk with my boss tomorrow about two weeks notice. We shall see how it goes. I know she will try to talk me into staying and I will feel bad about leaving her in the lurch but I am tired of the hours and my feet hurt all the time. So, for me, I shall quit.

Okay son's birthday party is over. My recovery nap is over. So glad I took tomorrow off from work. Would like to do nothing but work in my sewing room. One coworker is getting married and one coworker's father died unexpectedly from a heart attack. In my world that means a quilt for each. One to celebrate and one to comfort. Plus I have a graduation quilt where I am trying to tie together irish themed fabric and spiderman fabric. Two big interests of this boy. It has been a challenge to say the least. Luckily my son and husband and been there to give me some suggestions when I was ready to scrap it all in the garbage.

Hey all,
Super crazy day today...left the house before 8AM, and didn't get back until after 9pm. Had soccer, baseball, birthday party, shopping for a grade 6 grad dress, dinner out, 18 holes of a putting course...oy, super tired!!!

LOL Doris!! Visualizing your DH using a shovel for hail on a boat!! Kind of describes the weather where I live this spring!!! How did your race go? Hmmm, if you are quiting your job...how about coming to see me for a visit???

Hi Doug, I use elipticals sometimes for cross training. The problem with them is that they don't really train the muscles the same way running does. I wouldn't use them instead of running, or with the hopes it will help running. What it will do, is build your cardio level so that it is easier to maintain cardio for longer. The AMT machine Heather talks about is awesome. I use it to train when I am injured as it is a non-jarring version of the running motion. When I started, I just did a run/walk for as long as I could (didn't know about couch to 5k at that time). Ran until the next landmark (like 100 meters or so), then walked. Gradually I increased the interval, It was amazing when all of the sudden (so it felt), I was able to run 5k straight, then 10k and onward! You can do this...cross training is a super important part of training, as is strength training...are you doing any of that? Hope you have a wonderful week!!!

Hey Mirage, I know a thing or two about cancer, so if you need to talk, just message me:) Congrats on working towards a healthy lifestyle. I caution you to not be too restrictive as that is a hard one to maintain over time. I have done it WAY to many times, and have had to regroup and refocus. I have friends that run many races, and have lots that run a few. I run for me, and race when I feel like it...ok, when I know I am going to see some of my sparkfriends while doing it. Otherwise, I would rather do it on my own because it is me time. Whatever drives you should be your vehicle. Enjoy your training, and racing...and heck, it's the bling that counts:):) hugs!

Awww Carrie, I am so sorry hon - sending you HUGE hugs!!! You are amazing, and will get a teaching job soon, I am certain of that!!!

Anyhow, gotta fly, hugs and love!!

Monty, I have tried the whole no junk food thing but I cave in. I am thinking of trying just no grains but everything else (in moderation) is fine. We shall see.
Sailing today. It was gorgeous!!! I docked the boat while DH handled the lines. It was scary as I have never done it before, didn't hit anything and made it on the first try. Phew.

Hi all,

Well, I didn't get the position at the Spinning studio. :(

I am feeling very bummed right now - I know it's a hard time to be looking for teaching jobs, but it's a huge hit to my ego when I don't even get callbacks for positions. Sigh...

I'm going to remix the perceptions I embrace as a runner. I focus on this logic.

I run. I schedule at least one race a month so I stay in a training mode. I perceive my body as a vehicle with an engine. It runs best tuned up and fueled clean! Junk food is not an option. It has no place in my house!

It works. I prove it every day of my life. It works with everyone I mentor in a healthy lifestyle and doing their first 5K.

It's an alternative. Embrace the run!

My toes go numb too when I use an elliptical. I haven't been doing much of anything. The only way I seem to have of coping with stress is eating which is not a good plan. But I have some fun activities planned this weekend. Plus one is at my house so at least I get some exercise in from cleaning.

Hope y'all are doing well. I'm riding daily challenges with my mom. I'm also dealing with the aging process of a stroke victim, the realization of cancer, and it's collateral damage. I have a higher respect for my sister as mom's prime caregiver. At the same time, we need to focus on maintaining our healthy lifestyle and staying in the positive. I'm helping my sis to realize what she has to do in that area. It ain't easy, that's for sure. But we all get stronger in the process!

Hi all. Doug, I found that my toes get numb while on an elliptical and never while running. So, probably not the exact same motion I would guess.
Hi Rich. How is the foot?
Let's see, I am thinking about quitting my job and just not working for a while. Standing for an 8 or 10 hour shift is doing a number on my feet and knees. My feet just ache almost all the time. I have even worn my running shoes to work. They are not enough arch support. Sheesh. So, any advice?

DOUG, I have found that ellipticals are great for cross training and increasing cardio endurance, but it is not the same as running. The only machine that I have found that comes close is the AMT (Advance Motion Trainer) by Precor. They have them at my gym. This machine allows for natural variation in stride length and simulates the movement with less impact than running, but more than an elliptical. My heart and legs are definitely more challenged on this machine than on an elliptical, and an elliptical used to be hard for me.

Nothing will train you for running better than running. Just take it slow, look into interval programs that ease you into it (like Couch to 5K, or Spark Your Way to a 5K), and give yourself permission to repeat any days weeks necessary to achieve your goal. It's a journey, not a race, and your only competition is yourself yesterday.

Heather

I run because I don't have to.

What is the team's opinion on elliptical machines for training to run. I have one and I really like it-but I have never had the courage to go for a run on the road in my whole adult life.

Hi team. Just working this week, blech. DH was home alone on the boat in the marina when there was a hail storm. He had to borrow a shovel to remove it all!! Yikes!
My niece and I have signed up to run a zombie race in October. She has been getting ready and completed her first ever 5K on Saturday! Woo Hoo:)
Happy running all

Hey everyone!

Yesterday was a toughy...Don has only been gone a month, so a lot of raw emotion came out, mostly from me. Kids did really well though.

Did a nice 8k today, tough on the way back...improper hydration and forgot to eat...oops!!

Ate a great dinner of tilapia stuffed with Lobster meat (yep, splurged), and a salad...Joshy and I were in our glory. Miss just looked at us like we were aliens...she had seasoned tilapia, rice and fresh vegies. My Dad is coming to visit on Thursday...will be a great refocus for us.

Gotta fly, taxes await...

Cheers,
Trish

I needed to drop this early as I'm getting ready to fly to the DC Metro area around noon! I'm laughing at my week's clothes I've packed, dominated by running shirts & shorts! Man, have I changed. I always come back to DC triumphant due to my new lifestyle! And I believe we have every right to celebrate it! This is one of the reasons I want all my SparkPeople to achieve their goals! Life is so good!

After doing a PB at the ARC Father's Day 5K, we had a leisurely...and healthy brunch, went to Palm Harbor Farmer's Market, did some shopping, and then chilled at home for a bit. D then "dragged" me outta the house to go to a great local sports bar (Lee Roy Selmon's) to watch the US Open, and share a dinner!

Trish, I hope you and the kids made it through today without too much stress. I am sure it was tough. Sending hugs your way.
Got in a short run today. It was good but I could certainly feel that pesky nerve when I went up the little hill. Oh well. If something didn't hurt I would be worried:)
Nera, hope you got your walk. It is always good to do something for yourself.
Happy Sunday all

Did Father's day brunch with FIL and that side of family. Way too expensive for what you get. Now I am off to the grocery store and maybe a walk.

Did the C25K week 4 day 2 today and it went pretty well. Hot again but I changed my route so I wouldn't have so far to go to get back home this time--thank goodness! I am having some difficulty running with my dog but I feel too guilty to leave her home. I am just hoping she gets better at sticking with me especially during the running portions and not yank and distract me so much. I know she is just learning to run too so I am trying to be patient with her but it makes it hard to focus on my own form. I am really glad I got a workout in today because now I don't have to nag myself all day!! Woo hoo!

Hello all!

Yesterday's audition went well. They seemed to really like the class, so we'll see!

Anne - good point about the starchy-non-gluten stuff. I think (for me) it's more about eating better whole foods and less processed food.

I'm headed to the gym in a bit for some lower body work and a cycle class. It's going to be a beautiful day!

Hey all!
Miss tested for her blue stripe in Tae Kwon Do today...she rocked it out...sparred a boy and kicked him in the bootie!! Josh played a couple of ball games, and did an amazing job...gotta love it when both kidets rock athletically, and rock academically!!!

Judi, are you working with Nanc's coach now?

Hope you guys have a fantastic Suday!!! It is gonna be a toughy for us, and I am not quite sure how to play it.

Cheers,

Hi team. Just walking today. My sciatic nerve is acting up. Sheesh. Anyway, after lots of stretching and some ice, it is better:) Maybe tomorrow I will attempt a short run. There are not as many hills here so my last nerve (tee hee hee) should be OK:)

Hi all! Lots going on with me health wise so I am not even going to post all the stuff. Just getting frustrated with the elusive diagnosing of weird auto immune issues! Anyhow...I have been feeling so poorly that I pulled myself out of my funk and laced up my shoes today. 5.6 miles. Beautiful day. Did I feel yucky?? Yup, but I did it anyway. I am tired of my body telling me that I can't do something. I survived and I am going to continue to fight this thing!
Sorry, went off on a tangent there :)
Carrie-how was the audition? I am sure you rocked it!
Judi-so glad your running is going so well! Cool about the trainer!
Rich-I have been gluten free/wheat free for almost 6 months. I am gluten intolerant (as are a lot of people). I would caution on eating to much of the "gluten free" starchy products. Such as the breads and bad stuff we are trying to avoid in the first place. They are VERY high calorie and they actually make my tummy just as upset as the wheat ones. I stick with lean meat, lots of veggies and starches such as sweet potatoes and brown rice. Good luck!

Anne

Good morning all!

It's a beautiful day, I have a plan of things to do today, and tonight I'm going to dinner at the restaurant where hubs works.

Think of me at 1:30 - that's my audition time! I spent some time practicing last evening and I feel good about it. Wish me luck!

Okay, I've been working with an online coach, and finding that it has really been helping my running (besides the fact that checking in with him gives me more motivation to NOT miss a run). I learned yesterday that when you do an easy run, you should be running it so easy, that at the end you could run it again (not that you would). I have never before come in from an easy eight mile run thinking that sure, I could run another eight no problem. So I figured that I'm still not running my easy runs slow enough. So this morning, I slowed down even more (truly barely above my fast walking speed), and headed out for eight miles. I felt great at the end of the run, and even thought I could probably go again.

I know about running slow, but this has given me new information to process.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Hello all!

Yesterday's storms weren't as bad as expected. Today the humidity is gone and there is a wonderful breeze coming through the house. My heel is feeling better - lots of stretching and resting it.

Rich - hubs and I don't eat much wheat. I have to admit, I feel much better when I leave it out. It could be a placebo effect, but if it makes me feel better, it must mean something!

Hello all!

Judi- it's an audition for an indoor cycling studio! I have to prepare a mini-class, about 20 minutes. I am an AWFUL dancer!

Heel is better today. I think the stretching has been good for it, especially last night's yoga. This morning I have an appointment with the trainer - then it's home before the storms hit. Ugh.

Have a super day!

Last night, my Run Group guest leader was a leader & trainer of a sister group, Run Vie Racing. She is also a certified USA Triathlon Level 1 Coach, Road Runners Association of America Coach, and Team in Training Coach She had us out there last night doing fartleks! I just started doing them and I love it. It was the most enjoyable evening. Tonight I just went out, started at a slow pace, elevated it slowly then coming back home, I gingerly let it fly. It felt good!

Doris, I love that just cleaned smell! We had a beautiful double rainbow here last Thursday night, and I learned something new. A double rainbow has the colors reversed in the second rainbow. ROYGBIV in one, and VIBGYOR in the other. I've seen lots of doubles before, and never clued in to that.

Bobby, if you are going to try running again, why not do what I did (on the wise advise of FannyMae). Just run one day a week for the first month. It gave me lots of recovery time, and seemed to do the trick. Good luck my friend.

Linda, stay safe out there. That heat and humidity can cause problems, especially in the early summer when we aren't used to it .

Carrie, that audition sounds fun. Do you play only, or dance a bit too? I hope the heel plays nice.

I can't remember what else! LOL.

This morning I rode for over eighteen miles. My butt was sore by the time I got back.

Hello all!

So yesterday afternoon my heel just started hurting out of nowhere. I've been stretching it like crazy - I can feel how tight my calf is - and have been staying off it as much as possible. Ugh.

Last night I went to an awesome cycle class at my gym. There was GREAT music, and I worked my butt off! Today I have to start putting together a playlist for my audition on Saturday for a Center City spin studio!

Looks like we are all having a good week!! Tomorrow Missy is in the District Track Meet...and Josh is playing in the pool with his "little buddy" class (grade 1's). Did a schwack of km's over the weekend at the 24 hour relay, hoping to add more tomorrow.

Hugs and love,
Trish

Hi all! Runs are going well and I enjoyed reading down the thread.

Linda, great job on your race!

My garden has been growing like crazy, and it's almost time to start eating fresh lettuce.

105 calories is way off for some reason. It should be 2 - 3 times that amt. Would love to run near the water that would be awesome. Carrie is getting back at it, woo hoo!
if the rain holds off I will be riding today

A run by the beach sounds lovely, and I am sure the breeze helps a lot.

After a 3 mile run, the calorie burned tracker only said that I burned 105 calories. I think with all the heat and sweat, it should have been nice and doubled that! emoticon

I live in Paradise on the Florida Gulf Coast. My training runs take me out my door to the beach causeway with water on both sides.dominated by gulf breezes! Many of the races I run are by the water! I hydrate properly and it's all good!

Hello all!

All you humid running people... I prefer the AC of the gym in humidity like this. My to-do list is pretty long today, including a 6:30 cycle class. I feel like I'm finally getting into a good groove!

Have a super day!

Carrie

Yes, Anne I know what you mean. Sticky, sticky air. Not really hot out (thankful for that) but so humid! Hey, but we both did it!

100% humidity on my run today. Was looking forward to the rain that has been falling to cool me down but it barely sprinkled! Holy cow that was a tough one! Phew!

Hi. Not much happening here. DH's father died this morning but it has been a long time coming so no surprises. DH leaves for West Virginia tomorrow and I will meet him later in the week in New Jersey for the funeral.
No run but LOTS of walking today. I wanted to go kayaking but not with stitches in my thumb/hand....so, I sunbathed instead:)

Well the fabric was very stinky. I had to drive home with the windows wide open. Hubby helped me sort it. 99% of it was junk straight in to the garbabge. No really old fabric so that was disapointing. Mostly 60,70's which is funky and weird but not highly sought after. I was hoping to find some stuff to sell on ebay. I did find about 80 old quilt blocks done but not sewn together. If the wash can take out the smell they will make a very pretty quilt.
