I have had issues in the past with the same thing. Personally, I found that when it's hot and I'm running anything more than 6 miles I'm prone to this. The only thing that helps is slowing way way down. I have to drink gatorade during my run too, because if I just drink water I'll get the headache. But, if most of my long runs are around 11 min miles, then I need to run NO FASTER than 12 min miles or I get a headache. For me, the heat (and humidity) will give me a "runners hangover" if I don't watch it.

Thanks Nancy! Luckily my urine has been a little bit darker than pale yellow - I was worried about overhydration, too. It's not very dark - just like it would be on the days I know I don't get my water in that I should.

It could just be one of those weird coincidences, and not be related to the running at all. I'll just make sure to get plenty of rest tonight.

Hi Carolyn,

The headache could be caused by a number of things, but if your urine is a pale color, please be careful that you are not overhydrating. While dehydration is a factor, it is quickly resolved by drinking, however, overhydration (which can cause similar symptoms as dehydration) can be fatal.

Dr. Tim Noakes, one the world's best MD's and exercise physiologist just wrote a book titled, "Waterlogged"...I have not had the opportunity to read it yet, back he believes too many of us are more concerned with dehydration, therefore we push fluids and in doing so, we can create a whole bunch of issues.

Take care!

Coach Nancy

I ran about 9.2 miles this morning, early before the strong heat and humidity moved in. I drank while I ran, and since then have had a ton of water and gatorade, but I've been dealing with a headache all day. Has this happened to anyone else? I'm going to keep hydrating to see if that will knock it out soon.
