Saw the doc - she is awesome. I had an MRI of my calves and I have a follow up on Monday. Since then, I have had significant improvement! No running, but have really picked up my leg strength training and am biking hard a few times a week - I haven't been able to do these things for months. I started taking a magnesium supplement - with my acid reflux meds, I have asked every doc I've seen if a magnesium deficiency could have something to do with this. Odd how since I've begun with the supplement I am having no more of the extreme muscle tightness and pain?? I get to have a running gait analysis with a Cleveland Clinic PT that my dr. recommended in a couple of weeks. I haven't tried to do any running at all - I'm putting that on the back burner for now until I see the PT and am focusing on getting stronger.

Friday morning. I am optimistic that she knows what she's doing! I have seen countless doctors who obviously have experience only in the minor injuries that heal on their own in a few weeks. She's with the Cleveland Clinic, which I view as the best of the best.

i hope mine IS compartment syndrome! At least I'd have an answer and a plan for treatment, and hope of being active again.

FWIW, my GP thinks it is NOT compartment (or stress fracture) and sent me to an orthopedic; I have an appointment tomorrow. Thanks to all for the advice, support, feedback, etc. I hope to get a plan to resolve this tomorrow.

I wish both of you luck in your recovery from whatever it turns out to be. One of the good things (maybe the only thing) is that once the compartment is opened to relieve the pressure, its "cured" and usually doesn't come back:)
I had CS in the same compartment in both legs but only one hurt. The pressure in that leg was extremely high and I had emergency surgery to correct it. I did not realize how much it hurt until it no longer did!!

CSTREAM - I have an appointment with a orthopaedic doc at the Cleveland Clinic who specializes (among many other things) shin splints, tendonitis, and running injuries!!! I am so hopeful that she can help me! Thanks for your advice!

Thanks so much, CStream! I don't consider that to be "good" news, but it is very helpful and educational. I will see the doctor today or tomorrow, but I didn't think it was compartment syndrome because (a) it's only one leg, (b) I had been running for many months before it suddenly came upon me, and (c) it tends to hurt LESS when I run FASTER. Your advice makes me think that I may be wrong on all counts and in deeper trouble than I had thought.

KOACH: that is exactly where my lower hurt too. It took me 3 Drs and a a physical therapist to get a diagnosis and then relief. The good thing about that compartment is it is close to the surface so the recovery isn't that bad. I was off running for only 8 weeks. Crutches for a few days, weight bearing so it tolerable. PT started about 2 weeks after and I was able to walk within 4 weeks. Not far or fast, but walking. The BEST part was that the pain was GONE immediately after surgery for me!!! I needed no pain pills. Yes, it hurt from the surgery but it didn't hurt like it did before. If it is CS, it is imperative that you get treatment before it gets worse. The internal pressure can be high enough to destroy muscle (my left leg) it gets worse with use. I would not run or walk until you see a Dr. for it.

Sounds like the posterior tibialis. I have it there too - I guess that's where my troubles started.

The pain is above the ankle and next to the shin bone on the inside (that is, facing my other leg).

Not necessarily. Does it hurt on the shin or the side of the calf?
If its the shin that hurts its probably shin splints.

Thanks so much, CStream! And I have tried stretching and lunges, too. Heck, I'll try just about ANYthing at this point. I looked at links for the Stryker Test, but I have to think that what I have is a shin splint and not compartment syndrome. Otherwise, it would have been hurting all along when I ran, and not just flared up in the past month ... right?

Annie, I hope the new Dr. will do the Stryker test for compartment syndrome. I have had three compartments released and once recovered have had no pain in my lower legs:)
KOACH, I have no experience with shin splints but I have heard that tapping toes and "writing" out the alphabet with your toes (in the air) help.

Thanks for starting this thread! I sure would appreciate anyone's insights into rehabbing a shin splint. I eased off (fewer miles / fewer outings each week), used ibuprofen (Rx-strength Naproxen at first, after seeing my doctor), put on compression socks every night, use a cho-pat compression sleeve when I run, used ice in the beginning and heat more recently ... but I cannot seem to make it go away 100%. I really don't want to stop running and I have a 10 mile race very soon that means any further reductions in mileage and number of outings each week will have a negative impact on my training and preparation.

Any thoughts?

I have thought this may be the problem for a while - the most frustrating part of all of this is the lack of knowledge and help I've gotten from the various doctors that I have seen. The last ortho. doc said it sounds like fibromyalgia and sent me to a rheumatologist - I had tons of blood drawn, and nothing. He's trying to say it's psioratic arthritis because I have mild psoriasis, but I have no joint pain!!!! I am BEYOND frustrated with this. I feel as though it is related to running but has not been properly diagnosed and treated. My next step is a sport doc at the Cleveland Clinic - I researched and there's a woman who is experienced in running injuries and is the head of women's injuries. Believe me, I'm more than willing to do the painful test. The physical and mental pain I have been in from this has been unbearable. Thanks!

Annie, have you considered that your deep calf pain might be compartment syndrome? The only way to tell is to test for it, the test hurts. But, if that is what it is, it will not get better on its own. I would find a sports medicine Dr. or an orthopedic Dr. and discuss your pain with them.

Oh, how I feel your pain!!! This started last summer as an overuse injury - tendonitis in my ankles, severe shin splints, pain in the calves. I am still not running. I slowly healed, was feeling so much better - not 100%, but going many days with no pain. I started running a little and doing the elliptical and biking, and I had a setback. Now I feel the pain in my quads and hips. I can't get a dr. to dig deep into the cause of the extreme tightness and pain I have in my deep calf. This has been a horrible journey, but I am determined to run again, even if it takes a couple more years to get healed up!

Rita, I feel your pain. WEll, mine was not the ITB but the gastroc muscle in my calf and my PF. I suffered with the pain for about 18 months before I found a Dr. who could help. Had major leg reconstruction surgery and now, two years later, am finally feeling like I am all better. Just gotta tough it out sometimes.

I have a pain on the back of my heel, not the bottom. It hurts at night, and during the day. Shoes rub the area and I've been wearing backless shoes. I haven't run for about 2 weeks, thinking it would go away, but nope. I haven't been to the Dr. as I just am stubborn about healing myself. But this one will not go away. It's been since before Thanksgiving!

I have been dealing with hip pain for three weeks. I finally went into the ER for an xray. I was worried it was a stress fracture. They ordered an MRI and luckily it was,'t a fracture. That visit got me into an ortho/sports medicine doc and he confirmed it wasn't a joint problem either. I just messed up the hip muscles pretty well. That's the best news I could have gotten, but I have been in a lot of pain for the last week, and it's been affecting my diet and exercise habits. I finally worked out yesterday and today doing weights, the elliptical and bike and I feel really good. I am in training for a half marathon next Sunday, so I am hoping that the pain goes away long enough for me to run it. I have the doctor's blessing, he just told me to not run (but cross train) until the race.

Heather

I run because I don't have to.

It's been awhile since I posted, but I am currently rehabbing a torn IT band. Also there is an issue with a glute muscle. I fell last July and it was 6 weeks before I went to the doctor again as I wasn't getting better and an MRI revealed the problem. It is an area that can't be immobilized so it has been a long-time healing. Anyone else out there struggling with a long slow healing journey?
