Mike:
Bit late here but I think you've done the right thing. Buy new sneaks for training and use the old ones for the race. It's only 13.1, not 131, your old ones will be fine.

The 300 mile thing is just a guideline anyway. If nothing hurts that shouldn't, then you're good to go.

Ok NB 769 gone! My new shiny 1225 are in the house. I just hope my hips full better after that run from yesterday! I didn't need all this 9 days before my half. I am already anxious about the race and I don't need someting else to worry about. I guess lots of stretching and rest.

Mike, count yourself lucky, I only get about 200 miles on a pair. But I think it's more a question of hours than miles, and since I run slower than you, maybe as I get faster I can look forward to an extra 100 miles per pair.

I understand the idea of wanting to listen to the running store folks about your current gate and all, but I'm soundly in the "if it aint broke, don't fix it" camp. If I was in a shoe that only gave me trouble when i reached the wear-out point, there's no way I'd change to another one unless they discontinued my old ones.

Good luck with your race.

Mike, glad you've worked out a plan...not good timing but guess with all the miles you log, it was bound to happen eventually. I've been trying to always have a second pair of running shoes in the closet and put them on in the house for a bit then well before my mileage limit, I start to do some alternating with the shorter runs at first...so far this has been a good way for me to ease into new shoes.

Mike- Glad you made a desicion and hope you can get a pair in your size again! Good luck on the upcoming race!

Marie- Its difficult to adjust with the plantar fascitiis, but it can be done with time. I suffered the same thing myself.

wow...I'm your running buddy and I had no idea you were having such shoe drama..lol!! I'm getting used to my new shoes. I still like the old ones but they are "last years model" and nobody has them in my size...I searched far and wide....

I hope you get it resolved this week before our half. I can't give much advice other than to listen to your body/feet and go with it! I think you could go to 5 different running stores and get 5 different recommendations....

Have a great week and see you at Vernonia!!

I've been having the exact same problem. I developed plantar fasciitis and went to the running store to get their advice on what to do for it. Turns out, my comfy shoes I'd been wearing weren't the best for my feet. They put me in new shoes, and gave me a list of things to do for the plantar fasciitis. Now, the plantar facciitis is MUCH better, but my ankles are so stiff and sore I can barely walk. I just went back to the running store yesterday and the general consensus was that I'm sore and stiff because the slight difference in the shoes is making all my muscles work a little differently.

I don't work, so I have a little more leeway in how I spend my days which definitely helps me follow the running store's advice - which is to wear one pair of shoes for an hour or two, then switch to the other pair, then switch back... and keep switching while wearing the new shoes longer and longer and the old shoes for shorter time periods.

Good luck!

Thanks everyone! I appreciate your comments and insight. I actually posted this on the Roadrunner team also and somebody on there had the same exact thing happen to them. I think on the longer runs I need a bit more stability and I get sloppy in my running. I will go back to NB 1225 and just hope they have one in my size! I could use my old shoes even though they have reached the end of their miles. I have close to 300 miles on them and for me that seems to be the time I need to change. because I am such a light guy. LOL

Were your old ones coming up on your usual mileage limit, or did you suspect they were causing the calf problem because they were no longer the right shoe? If you think they were just wearing out, I would get a new pair of them and break them in during your taper.

You shouldn't really need a lot of break-in with modern running shoes. But I've never run more than 6 miles at a time, so I don't have any experience in the mileage you are pushing.

Another vote for going back to your old shoes. I bought a pair that gave me issues and didn't take them back when I had the chance and never could run in them. I don't know about you, but my budget doesn't allow for that :)

Good luck with whatever you decide is right for you!

Good luck -- I vote for the old shoes. I had shoe drama right before a 10K and ended up running in new shoes. Everything worked out fine, but I'm glad it was "just" a 10K.

I would go with the ones Im used too even though you'll have breaking in issues
you might end up with battle wounds like blister or something like that

just from my own experience NB 1224 is my perfect shoe but they stopped making it replacing with 1225 I couldnt get the width right on them so I found a store that had one last pair of what I was familiar with 1224's I wore them on my 1/2 M in New Orleans and ended up with red patch on side of foot that turned into a blister but over all it wasnt that bad
Let us know what you decide
cheers
John

Golly Mike this is tough one, but if I were in your situation I would go back to what you know. It could be that your running gait conformed to the shoes you were accustomed to wearing even if they were the wrong shoe for your pronation. Maybe the folks at the store can guide you along the way...wish I had a better answer, my friend!

HAPPY SPARK RUNNING!

I ran 8.69 today.

I not real happy with my new shoes - my ankles are stiff after my run and I have never had that. I wondering if its my new shoes. I ran 8 miles in them on Saturday and the same thing happened. It also makes my hips hurt while running - which never happened with my old shoes. I think I need to return shoes. such drama 10 days before half!!!!

Comments - I love the shoes but I think I just need to go back to my NB 1225 instead of these NB 769.

the reason I switched because I got the treadmill at the running store and they said my gait was more neutral than before so we switched shoes.

I have used the shoes for 3 runs now a 5 and 2 eight mile run. They were fine for 5 mile run but the longer distances has me a bit concerned.

I am pretty sure I am going to wear my old shoes for the half but they too had issues they were making my right calf sore on the long runs!

What would you do? should I return the shoes and go with the same shoe as my old ones and hope for the best at the half.
