Judi-that is it!!! I have always had 'rolls' above my knees even when I was super slim!!! Running has taken care of that-I hadn't put the 2 together til you said that!!! And, to add to the positives: SANITY and calm....
Before I started running, I was a biker and a walker. Since I added running to the mix, I really like what it's done to my knee area. I always used to think I had "fat" knees, but running has helped that area in ways the other two activities didn't.
While I have hardly lost any weight since I started running, I have gone from barely being able to squeeze into a size 20 jeans to being able to squeeze into most size 10's . I still can not figure out how I could shrink so much and not loose weight, but..... i've also noticed muscle definition in my legs.
But what's been the best affect of the running is my sanity. I actually have a little bit now! LOL I feel SO much calmer & happier. The PMS craziness is virtually gone and the migraines that used to be a weekly event are basically gone. And on top of all that, the running has motivated me to eat healthier. I can feel the difference between eating my veggies and eating a bunch of junk food when I run. I've been amazed at how my body reacts to various foods and when I'm tempted to eat badly, I think about how it will effect my next run and I almost always choose the good-for-me foods.
Another benefit of running - all the new people you get to meet. I joined a local running club and I can not get over how friendly and outgoing all the other runners are. And rather than poking fun of me for being a pathetically slow newbie, they all encourage me and each other. I've been amazed at how upbeat and positive they all are. I belong to several other social groups and most of those gatherings are spent with everyone complaining about what ever. Not the runners! They are all upbeat, happy, energetic and supportive of each other.
And of course, it's always SO cool when you get to casually mention that today is a short run day and you are ONLY running X number of miles. :) What an ego boost that is!!
Thank you everyone. Just the reasons I was looking for to get started with the C25K program April 1st. I'm finishing a Jillian Michaels program this month. But thank you very much for all the info. I really need some toning in the glutes and legs. Excellent!

Pros: - toning of my butt and legs - improved stamina for all cardio activities - reduced stress and anxiety - improved sleep patterns
Cons: - increased hunger and cravings following runs - social pressure from running buddies to go out to eat after runs; junk foods served at running events - decreased weight loss once I started running longer than 5K distances(see reasons above)
