This happened to my husband too, but I didn't know it was a common issue!! Yikes I hope it doesn't happen to me! I don't think my shoes are too small, but I haven't reached more than 5 miles of running yet either.

This can be very common issue for many runners...some more so than others. When I experienced my first black toe nail early on in my running I was wearing a shoe that was a 1/2 size too small so as my mileage started to increase, my toes where being jammed into the toe box. Going up a 1/2 size fixed the problem. HOWEVER, you can still have perfectly fitting shoes and socks and still have issues...for some more so than others.
I've searched Google for this and I do find topics about nails falling off for runners, but it talks about trauma (and the nail bed being black).
Well, I do a fair amount of working out and jogging and just had a nail fall off. It's not fungusy or black, it just fell off. I have another nail on the other foot that's feeling "funny" like maybe it's going to go that direction too.
I'm very girly and my toenails aren't really short (first mistake) and always perfectly painted (I'm really hurt about a missing nail).
Do tell me this is normal. My shoes fit fine, but I am going to shorten my toenails more.
