I have experienced that pesky side stitch, on my right side near my rib cage. Eeeooww. I found that it creeps up on me when I get anaerobic ... which is usually when I'm running too fast and taking shallow breaths. Now that I've been concentrating on my breathing and practicing belly breathing even when I'm not running, I rarely experience those any more -yay!!

HCall - first of all, welcome to a WONDERFUL team, and great job on your 5K!
Second, I also ran my first 5K after only running on a treadmill, and I will tell you, you DO run faster outside than you do on the TM. AND you tend to run faster in races than you do on your own because of the race environment and adrenaline. I know even now when I feel like I'm running very slow outside it's usually a quicker pace than my regular TM pace. So that could definitely have been part of the cause of your side stitch.
Just keep running, outside when you can, and you'll get used to the differences.

Nancy wrote a great article about form and technique. She says: "Side stitches (sharp, cramp-like pain in the trunk of the body) are quite common among new runners, and they can really put a damper on your workout. One cause of side stitches can be shallow, upper chest breathing. This is where belly breathing helps tremendously. By inhaling and then forcefully exhaling through pursed lips, you can very often help prevent the dreaded side stitch. It was probably what we call a side stitch and this is generally caused when you are running at a much faster pace than you have been training for, especially since the treadmill chooses your pace for you. The best thing to do is slow down and take some deep belly breaths and forcefully exhale.

I ran my first 5K Saturday and a little after half way through, I started to get a sharp pain in my side. I never get this when I'm running, is it because it was cold or because I'm not use to running outside (I run on a treadmill)?
