Congrats on your first 5K!!

I have experienced that pesky side stitch, on my right side near my rib cage. Eeeooww. I found that it creeps up on me when I get anaerobic ... which is usually when I'm running too fast and taking shallow breaths. Now that I've been concentrating on my breathing and practicing belly breathing even when I'm not running, I rarely experience those any more -yay!!

Welcome to the team emoticon

HCall - first of all, welcome to a WONDERFUL team, and great job on your 5K!

Second, I also ran my first 5K after only running on a treadmill, and I will tell you, you DO run faster outside than you do on the TM. AND you tend to run faster in races than you do on your own because of the race environment and adrenaline. I know even now when I feel like I'm running very slow outside it's usually a quicker pace than my regular TM pace. So that could definitely have been part of the cause of your side stitch.

Just keep running, outside when you can, and you'll get used to the differences.

I'm not an expert, but breath in through your mouth, nose, and ears if you have too. Just breath deeply.

Congrats on your 5K.

Most experts say breath in through your nose and out through your mouth, taking deep breaths...maybe you were so excited for your first race you forgot about your breathing techniques....

It could be switching from treadmill to road. Maybe your body wasn't prepared for the difference, or change in speed.

One thing that gives me a side stitch is Gatorade during or before my runs. I can only have water during runs.

Welcome to the team, I'm sure you will get lots of other great advice from this team!

Nancy wrote a great article about form and technique. She says: "Side stitches (sharp, cramp-like pain in the trunk of the body) are quite common among new runners, and they can really put a damper on your workout. One cause of side stitches can be shallow, upper chest breathing. This is where belly breathing helps tremendously. By inhaling and then forcefully exhaling through pursed lips, you can very often help prevent the dreaded side stitch. Maintaining good posture, with your body in an upright position, also allows for better lung expansion, therefore permitting for greater delivery of oxygen to the muscles." www.sparkpeople.com/resource/fitness

Side stitches might be caused by what you ate/drank as well. Also it might not be the actual speed, but the breathing that would affect it.

Hmmm, I didn't think I was running fast at all but I don't know much about running. That's interesting though, I'll keep that in mind for my next one. Thanks!

HC,

It was probably what we call a side stitch and this is generally caused when you are running at a much faster pace than you have been training for, especially since the treadmill chooses your pace for you. The best thing to do is slow down and take some deep belly breaths and forcefully exhale.

GREAT JOB on your 5K!

HAPPY SPARK RUNNING!
Nancy

I ran my first 5K Saturday and a little after half way through, I started to get a sharp pain in my side. I never get this when I'm running, is it because it was cold or because I'm not use to running outside (I run on a treadmill)?

Oh I'm new to the team too!
