Thanks, guys!
I am going to keep forcing myself out there 3x a week and hope I get myself back. I say force because it's not as fun as it used to be, much harder now, but I am trusting that it will get easier again.
Today I went out, did my normal run, and took a minute off my mile pace! Weird. It was cold, so I wonder if I was just in a hurry to get warm again. :-)

You took a week off? You won't lose that much. The problem will be residual fatigue from the H1N1. Even though it's a relatively mild strain, flu recovery does take a while.

Run easy and short. If you keep regular you don't lose too much. Yeah you may end up walking a bit of the 8 miler seeing as you're going to top out around 5-6 miles, but you may have done that anyway...

i can't add much on top of what nancy said, but if you want to do the 8 mile at the end of october, do your best until then and go to the race knowing you might be walking a bit. there is no shame in that and you know you can finish it if you have been able to crank out 5 or 6 miles on a regular day. just do you best until then and take it slow on race day, stop and walk EVERY time you need to!

Congrats on the weight loss! You truly are amazing! You can do this!!!

You probably lost a little endurance. The longer you have been a runner the longer it takes to lose your endurance however, even the elite runners can lose most of their endurance is just 12 short weeks.

Hang in there and know that running is a journey. Your body is still recovering and pushing too hard to get back to where you were before you got sick can actually make your body more vulnerable to getting sick again.

We all have bad runs from time to time...Mine was a 9 mile run this afternoon. I am still tired from all the excitement over the weekend but I not gonna let it get the best of me...there will be days like this.

Glad you are feeling better and GREAT JOB on the weight loss!!!

HAPPY SPARK RUNNING!
Nancy

to get back to my level of fitness? I was up to a comfortable 5+ miles (only been running for 5 months) on a long run, and an easy 3-4 miles on two other days of the week.
Two weeks ago I had swine flu, and didn't run for 6 days. Since then, I ran a 5K race (my first day back, but I had paid the registration fee already, so I didn't have a choice) in 1 minute less than my goal- 38 minutes. I am now back to 3 times a week, and Sunday was my long run at 6.0 miles. My time is the same as it was, but it just doesn't feel as easy.
Is this from the flu? How long will it take to get back again? I want to run a race- 8 miles- on the 24th of October, and I'm not sure I can increase 1/2 mile every week to make it by then. This last weekend, the last block of the 6 miles was absolutely ALL I could do. It was definitely my limit.
What should I do? Please, all of you running pros, help this newbie!
