I don't know a lot about road tires for your MTB, but I'll bet that they should cost about $30-40 per pair. You don't need top-of-the-line tires, just ones without knobbies (and thinner, if you can). Besides, it's always good to have a spare set of tires lying around (he says, thinking of the multiple sets of tires he has!).

Tri shorts are great. Do your brick in them this weekend and see how you go. Mine are great for rides lasting less than 2 hours, after that I get a hot spot from the lack of chamois. Running in them is dead easy.

Good job on planning on trying out the wetsuit. Bodyglide on your wrists and ankles helps with getting the little dear on and off (as does plastic bags, apparently). You may experience a slight feeling of strangulation when you do the suit up, that's normal but it takes some getting used to.

Well, I found out today that that 10K course is fairly hilly, which has dampened my enthusiasm a bit, LOL. I was telling my trainer about it and he said (exact quote) "You DO like to pick difficult courses, don't you?" LOL So... we'll see.

I would change to road tires in a second, except funds are tight, and hubby is already choking on what I've been spending, lol. I might though. I've got a brick this saturday and I may just go and try to do the whole bike course that day, if I can get someone to meet me at the top with the van. Then I'll think about it again.

Speaking of spending money, I found some tri-shorts on 50% clearance today, and bought them. They fit PERFECTLY. Of course, that means probably that by my next one (if there IS a next one!) they will (HOPEFULLY) be too big, but that's a lot easier to face after spending $22.50 than after spending almost $50. And, I broke down and rented a wet suit. I'm not as worried about the cold water as I am wanting the swim/flotation assistance. I've found I don't float nearly as well as I used to... emoticon

The scary thing is that I get the wetsuit for a week (a very GENEROUS week, lol), so I can go pick it up a week from Friday. AHHHH!! That will give me the following week to try it out in the water and then (AAHHH!!!) Saturday will be the race. Then I'll take it back the following monday (which is why I said it's a generous week). Boy, it's coming up fast. emoticon But I got encouraging words at the MultiSports store I was in today for the trishorts and wetsuit. What a rollercoaster!

Your tri fitness will carry over to your running. Believe me - at least I'm hoping it will through my Half!

So I think you should just go for the 10k. Remember it's your first so finishing and having fun is the main aim but you'll be pleasantly surprised by what the biking and swimming has done for you.

Change your knobby tires to road tires, it'll make things much easier.

Looking forward to hearing about the tri and the 10k, and all the training too! Go ahead and attempt the 10k, and just listen to your body to figure out how much of it to run. Walk as often as you feel, especially early, and you'll be able to complete the entire thing with a great time.

LOL I have a trail bike, it is so not a road bike, but could get my hands on a beach cruiser...I thought about looking at our local bike shop and making some friends and seeing if I can get a big old discount....first things first, I have 2 5Ks I need to complete that are registered for and paid for before I start training for a Tri...I would love love love to be able to get to the point of an Iron Man...but don't have the time for that kind of training with 2 small children.

Cassie, that sounds like my bike.

Ok, may I just say... the bike is an EVIL invention. (Dragonfly - don't listen! LOL) I just did the first and EASY half of my bike leg... and it took me 35 minutes! UGH! I am SOO looking forward to just running for awhile! LOL

When I was training for the sprint I was going to do, I was just using my regular bike. Hubby got it for me one year for my birthday, and I think it was around $150.

Dragonfly - you should check around your area for a sprint tri. There are even some "Try-a-tri" events that have even lower distances for people starting out.

Dragonfly, I'm just doing mine on my mountain bike that I bought at Costco.

If you have a bike, give it a 'tri'!

I'm not even changing the tires for road tires... probably should, but at this point...?

Aspen I think if you can run 5K after all that you are so going to be ready for a 10K! I would love to try for a sprint tri, but can't afford the bike...holy cow 2K....maybe if and when the market improves!

Dragonfly - I am doing the sprint distance, which is a 5K run at the end, after a 750 m (1/2 mi) swim and a 20K (12.4 mile) bike ride.

Cassie - that's kind of what I'm thinking. COOL... I think I will sign up for it then. I've been wanting to try the 10K distance, especially since I'll never be a speed demon, LOL.

Because you are doing three sports right now, I would definitely say that you will have enough stamina or endurance for the 10k. By my calculations, you will have five weeks to go from 5k to 10k. That works out to only adding 1k each week to your long run, at the same time as dropping the other two sports.

I think that the 10k would be very do-able for you.

I don't know what kind of tri you are doing, but how far is the running segment?? If it is 5K, you might be able to work up to a decent run close to 10K in a month of increasing your mileage, but not too much at one time!

I was getting concerned about what I would do after my tri is over (in less than three weeks now!! AHHH!) and how I would keep myself distracted from my lack of weight loss progress. The tri training is sooo all-consuming that I really don't have time to fuss about it too much.

Anyway, I decided I wanted to focus more on my running, because not having to split myself between 3 different disciplines does sound nice. I planned on running several 5Ks this season.

This is my dilemma. A friend is trying to talk me into doing a 10K the saturday before Thanksgiving (Nov. 22, I guess). I haven't been doing *that* much running, and have been spending more time tracking time running rather than actual distance of my runs since I've been running outdoors more than on the treadmill. My tri is Oct 18. If I am not at all averse to walking some of it, do you think that's enough time for me to get in running shape for a 10K or should I just wait for a different opportunity?
