He really sounded like a beautiful person. Our hearts are with you and his family.

thanks for all the advice and sympathy from everyone.

CASSIOEPIA-there are many more than four of us running, but we all plan to go the whole distance, but many of us don't really run at all. i am definitely going to have to walk a portion of the race, a few of us are shooting for 3 hours--as this was Zack's goal for the full marathon. I think that with a little more than 2 months to train, 3 hours is do-albe, do you agree?

also, i might have underestimated my mileage for the month, as i have already surpassed it :)
again, thank you all for the advice and prayers.

I am sorry for the loss of your friend, and what a great idea you guys have to hold up his memory.

I'm going to throw this out there for you to discuss with your friends. Since you currently aren't running more than the 5k distance, and your monthly goal (from your signature area) is 30 miles, I'm guessing that you currently run about 7-8 miles per week. To me, it seems like a pretty good stretch to train for the half marathon in a shortened training period.

So here's my idea....

Can you relay with your friends? If there are four of you, it's about 5.25 km each. Many of the longer races held in this area have that option, so you could ask the race director if that is allowed.

If you really have your heart set on going the distance, you can check out the "Smart Coach" training plans in the Runner's World website. Here is the link:

When you enter in your numbers (so they can work your plan), add a couple of weeks extra, as I think you are already probably doing something close to week 1 and 2, so you could start on week 3.

I wish you all the best in whichever way you decide to run in Zack's honor.

I'm so sorry about your loss! What a wonderful way to remember him by! There is a Half Marathon Spark Team. I recommend dropping a line to them and seeking their help! There are lots of training programs out there for the 1/2 and I think you might have enough time complete or close to the training for it.

Best wishes to you!
Mel

On saturday morning, a close friend of mine passed away. He was only 21, very healthy, and probably the nicest guy I've ever met. He died while on a training run, he was training to run in the Atlanta Marathon on Thanksgiving day and something malfunctioned in his body, he was found in the woods, on the trail, leaning against a tree in the shade as if taking a break. In memory of Zack, several of his friends, myself included, are planning to run/walk the half marathon at this event in his memory.

I've been running for a while, but I've never competed in a race longer than 5k. We are all planning to try and finish within 3 hours, which was Zack's goal for the full marathon. If anyone has any advice on training or if I should start trying out gels and things, preventing chaffing on a long run, anything would be helpful.

Please keep Zack and his family and friends in your prayers. He was a wonderful person and he enriched the lives of everyone he touched, he will be dearly missed. Thanks everyone for reading.
