I am sorry for the loss of your friend, and what a great idea you guys have to hold up his memory.
I'm going to throw this out there for you to discuss with your friends. Since you currently aren't running more than the 5k distance, and your monthly goal (from your signature area) is 30 miles, I'm guessing that you currently run about 7-8 miles per week. To me, it seems like a pretty good stretch to train for the half marathon in a shortened training period.
So here's my idea....
Can you relay with your friends? If there are four of you, it's about 5.25 km each. Many of the longer races held in this area have that option, so you could ask the race director if that is allowed.
If you really have your heart set on going the distance, you can check out the "Smart Coach" training plans in the Runner's World website. Here is the link: www.runnersworld.com/cda/smartcoach/1,7148
When you enter in your numbers (so they can work your plan), add a couple of weeks extra, as I think you are already probably doing something close to week 1 and 2, so you could start on week 3.
I wish you all the best in whichever way you decide to run in Zack's honor.
