Ok, so instead of taking those shoes back and trying to find some new ones, perhaps it's time to go shopping for new running clothes?!?!?

*giggles* truly a good problem to have, except that anything that keeps you from running is annoying, at the least!

thanks ladies, glad to know i'm not the only one! :)

well i ran yesterday 2 miles (was going to do 2.5, but my pants kept falling down and i got sick of holding them up! lol... nice problem to have right, haha) and my leg was a little sore but better than wednesday. so hopefully my legs just have to get used to running "the right way" and using different muscles. thanks for all the support!! :)

KATREENI: I was sidelined several months ago with the same knee problem. However, I am 100% fine and no flare-ups. I take supplements (MSM, Chondroitin, and hyaluronic acid, fish oil/omega-3's) and include my trusty multivitamin. I attributed my knee issue to doing too much too soon. Do not run daily, take rest days, and do not increase time by 10% per week.

The Brooks will make a difference. I have been running in Brooks Adrenaline for a year now and I love them. In fact, I am ready for my 3rd pair.

To answer the question about 'C25K' - that is the abbreviation for 'Couch to 5K' training program for beginner runners to get you from the couch to running a 5K.

KATREENI- The exact same thing happened to me. I was diagnosed with runner's knee and given a series of stretches and exercises to do by my doctor.

I took a few weeks off running, with icing and resting. Then, when I started back up again, I started the C25K program over again, running every other day.

My doctor says it's the most common knee injury in runners, and is often a result of new runners starting off too hard.

Good luck!

i am happy to hear that roset!! i'm excited to go run today and try them out :) yeah there were two pair i was deciding between, so i did a side-by-side comparison with one shoe on each foot.... the other one i could feel the support and rigidity, but the brooks felt like i wasn't wearing anything at all. that was nice :)

and thanks jules.... you too!!!

Katreeni~I too bought Brooks adrenaline after I completed the C25K! I really like them. I went to a Fleet Feet and they were very thorough in the fitting! I actually took a size and a half bigger than I thought I did, with my left foot being a 1/2 size bigger! What I like best about them is that I don't even think about my feet when I'm running that's how good they feel!

Look to see i you have a Fleet Feet in your area. Or google running stores - we have 3 in town here that I didn't know about until I did that - Village Runner, Fleet Feet, and RedRock Runnning Co.

I've been into them all, and really liked Fleet Feet.

Once you've found a good pair of shoes for you, you can look into buying them somwhere like Dicks, but I wouldn't go there to start with. It' really no better than a regular shoe store most of the time.

thanks jules, i usually stretch after i run and don't have a problem, but i will try to do some more just stretching this weekend and RICE.

does anyone have any suggestions of names of stores i can look up? there is only one running store that i know of in appleton, i may have to do some searching online and look at green bay and see if i can find one. otherwise a friend suggested i try dicks sporting goods... but i would rather just go to a running specific store. i will definitely go adrian, thanks!

You've solved your own problem, I think. It's the shoes. I'm anally retentive about shoes but I'll spare you the lecture. Suffice to say, get yourself down to a specialist running store and get fitted for shoes that fit your running style.

I'd be willing to bet that your knee problems won't come back with properly fitted shoes...

Awww, Katreeni, sorry your knee is botherng you! Give it a couple of days off with the whole RICE formula, and be sure you're stretching! Quads, hammies, glutes, hip flexors, calves... all of those can affect the knees. I don't know why it's so hard for me to discipline myself to stretch every time, but I know when I slack off, I pay for it in aches and pains.

thanks guys. i was trying to talk myself into it's no big deal.... but pain is pain right? and i have to listen to my body. but i'm just bummed because i have actually started feeling like a "runner" lately... last weekend i did 3.5 miles (without walking!) and was going to do 4 this weekend, and during the week i did 2.5 tues and thurs and have been trying to up my speed slowly on the treadmill. so i was excited that it was finally starting to go well! oh well... it will come in time. i definitely don't want to make it worse because i have another 5k coming up on sept 20 that i really want to do well in. i for sure won't run tomorrow and see how i feel sunday, otherwise i will just wait for tuesday's workout and see how it goes. hopefully i will be feeling better... just wait and see i guess!

well i am at work now but i will try to rest it and elevate tonight... by compression do you mean wrap it?? and i will have to check about the shoes i guess. i have only had them since april, and feel like i haven't really been "running" that much (not long distances) but i didn't get them at a running store or get fitted, i just bought them cause they fit ok and were nike "running shoes"... lol. i was just beginning and didn't know how far i would actualy get with running. so maybe now that i'm starting to run longer distances i should look into going and getting fitted for a pair of shoes right for my run.

thanks guys, i knew you would help! :)

Aww katreeni sorry your knee hurts!!! I am having the same thing now and a day of rest seems to do the trick. Mine gets bad after longer runs, just achy for a day or so. I have been icing it lately because that is what I did when my knees bothered me at swimming. Anyways, good luck, I hope it gets better!!!

KATREENI,

Sounds like a runner's knee issue, possibly your knee not tracking within the grove. Women are more prone to knee issues due to our wider quadricep angle (AKA Q-angle) because of our wider childbearing hips.

I totally agree with Adrian, RICE your knee and No running. Like he mentioned have a look at your shoes. I read in that running in the summer wears down your shoes faster then any other time due to the heat of the pavement. If you don't get any relief you may want check with your doc...and never run through the pain.

As far as Glucosamine and Chrondroitan are concerned...it is worth a shot, but know that it can take 4-6 weeks before you may experience any help if you do. Most people (70%) will see some help but the other 30% won't...there is no way to know which person you may be except to give it a try.

I hope this helps!

HAPPY (so to be) RUNNING!

RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) the knee first. Especially Rest. Catch it early enough and you'll be back to running in no time.

Then check your shoes - do they need to be replaced?

When I first started to run, my one knee had a pain on the outside. I have an old knee injury in this one, so it was to be expected. I cannot run for 2 consecutive days without the pain slightly worsening. I have noticed though that what I run on makes a difference. My preference is packed farmer field trails. As I continue to run though, I'm not sure if it my strength building, but it takes longer for the ache to begin.
I can't say why your knee hurts, be an old injury or you stepped wrong and strained. But what I do know through my experiences with knees, is take it easy & let the pain ease before putting the impact of running on it. Of course, if it persists, see your dr. If you've done some damage (tear a ligament), running could only make it worse!

so yesterday morning i woke up and there was a spot on my knee that was a little sore. it was a running day, so i thought well i'll go and see how it feels. so i went to the gym and ran on the treadmill, 2.5 miles (about 33 minutes) and it felt fine. as soon as i got done and walked off the treadmill it started hurting again. :(

the pain is on the inner side, on the bottom.... kind of like on the bottom of the knee joint? it hurts when i lift my knee/leg (like walking and especially stairs) and i feel like i have to be careful moving my knee in different directions.

anybody have any thoughts what might be going on? i'm supposed to run 4 miles tomorrow, but i don't want to push it and risk hurting myself more. :( i'm hoping it will heal itself, but i dont know if there are any stretches or anything i should try to do??? any suggestions???
