Philly:
Missed this thread the first time round.... The run/walk combo is AWESOME and not really that much slower than running the whole thing. I know folk here who do 10:1 (10 mins run, 1 walk) and 8:2 is also popular.

Being scared is fine, everyone gets nervous for raceday. Try the run/walk intervals but most of all, enjoy!

EDITED to add:
The magic of raceday will also be a BIG help.

I'm running my first 5k on May 3rd also. I got really bad shin splints in the beginning so I started increasing my time by 4 minutes every 2 runs. This has worked better for me than planning walk breaks. I ran 36 minutes without stopping this morning!!

You can do it! Just think how proud you'll be of yourself when you finish it!!

Thanks so much for the support. I didn't know I could do a run/walk combo! That makes me feel a little better. I plan to check out the course Friday and stake out some landmarks as suggested. I'll keep you posted on how it goes.

Philly - Don't be scared - you have already started the race! Just by signing up, that's more of a first step than crossing the start line.

Just go into it with the mindset that you will do this as best you can. Run/walk your way to the finish line. If you have never run a race - as everyone is gathering/huddled at the start line, there is such an energy in the air and so much excitement that it will carry you farther than you thought possible. I am excited for you - let us know how you do!!

Don't worry I'm doing my first 5K in June and I haven't registered yet but I am a little scared. After training for only 2 weeks I'm not feeling as scared. Like someone else on here said I would do a run/walk combo to first start out that's what I am doing. I have a history of getting bad shin splints and so far doing this run/walk combo has helped!!
Good luck and we are here for you!:)

Hey Jenn, I just read in the May 2008 issue of Runner's World about a gentleman from China who participated in a backwards marathon before the Rome Marathon in 2004 and he sill finished in 3:43:39...I could be so lucky!!! emoticon

HAPPY RUNNING!

No problem =0) I know I've heard people advocating running backwards, so I thought maybe you followed that and ran the entire course that way before races! I always feel ridiculous when doing hill repeats -- running full out up and then walking down backwards =0)

Jenn, Guess it does read like I run the race backwards, huh??? LOL!!! Actually, I run the course in reverse. However, I do walk backwards on the treadmill on my cross training days...this helps build up the proprioceptive links and I get quite the stares. I will say since I started doing so last fall, I have seen many others, NOW do the same thing. While I can't walk as fast as I do going forward, at a 3.4 mph pace I am sweating like a pig easily 10 minutes into my walk. Thanks for clarifying things! hehehe!!!

HAPPY RUNNING!
Nancy

Nancy -- do you run backwards or run the course in reverse? Neither would really surprise me =0)

Philly, Being nervous or apprehensive is all part of the game and that added adrenaline will certainly get you farther than you think. My mantra is..."You will never know, if you never try."

Trish has a GREAT idea. When I do my warm-up before my 5Ks, I run the course backwards (since your's is an out and back that will be a great benefit), like Trish stated, then you will have landmarks to judge how much longer the run will be. Warm-ups are essential for 5Ks. The running theory is, "The shorter the race, the longer the warm-up."

BEST OF LUCK...You will do just fine and hey with your Rookie Runner's Group running with you in spirit there is no way you won't finish!

HAPPY RUNNING!
Nancy

Good for you--you will be able to do it and have a great accomplishment to boot!! I suggest to walk the course now. You can get landmarks and visuals to help with the rest of your training. Then just keep up your training and you will be amazed! Best wishes!
Trish

If you're new to distance runing I *STRONGLY* reccommend a run/walk system. you can either do it by distance (say, walk until you catch your breath at the start of each km marker or other landmark) or you can purchase an interval watch like this one:

www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00020J1GW

and set if for a run/walk ration you feel comfortable maintaining for that distance. I run at a 4:1 ration - 4 mins of run, 1 min walk.

I don't have time to do the things I can do, so it doesn't seem important to worry about the things I can't do.

That is exactly how I've felt after signing up for any race. A friend sent me this quote yesterday: "Big occasions and races which have been eagerly anticipated almost to the point of dread, are where great deeds can be accomplished." -Jack Lovelock

Go accomplish great things! You can do it!

I registered for the University City 5K in Philly on May 3 (my first!!), printed out the course - and got scared! The longest I've run without stopping is a mile and a quarter. This course, which begins at 32nd & Chestnut, goes to 16th & Chestnut, and flips back around to 32nd & Chestnut seems, well, terrifying. What have I done?? Help!!
