Biggest week was very disappointing this year between the hot humid days, high winds, monsoon rains and cold temperature days I barely saw any warblers. In past years the trees would be full of beautiful birds. I wonder if the winds just blew them all right across lake Erie! I did have a nice week off of work though on a positive note. I did get to see an owl in the wild. My first!

I went to Sandy Reservation yesterday. There were a few Coots in the water, A snowy Egret, An Eagle and 2 Eaglets in the nest. A few straggler migrating ducks, Nuthatch, Gray Gnatcatcher, House Finch, Woodpeckers calling in the woods, the usual Cardinals, Robins, and Blue Jays. Kind of disappointing.

Lots of the activities may be booked up. You need go to their website and register and see what trips and activities still have open spaces. I think today may be the last day you can do this. You can also get on a waiting call list in case of cancellations and last minute openings. If there isn't anything left open that you want to do the only reason to register is to get into the evening get togethers at Maumee Bay, and get discounts at local restaurants and hotels etc. You don't need a badge to go anywhere on any of the properties, and since you are local you know a lot of the local birding spots without taking a bus trip to them. There will be maps of all the local birding places available at BSBO or Maumee Bay. Get the 2015 guidebook . They are distributed all around local buisnesses in their front vestibules.

I was reading the website and activities. My understanding is that you have to register ($35) and then pay for that activity you would like to join. Or do I just pay the $10 and not register for that activity? Hope that makes sense. I have a friend coming up from Columbus the first weekend and we are going together. She is new at birding. I am planning that week to be off just to go to the parks and wander and watch..

I'll be working at the BSBO information table on May 9th from 9:00am to 1:00 pm. I have some paid activities, a workshop on Thursday the 14th, Woodcocks walk on Monday night the 11th, and a few travel talks. I mostly will be on the boardwalk. I'm going to make trips to Oak Openings, Pearson Park, Metzger Marsh, and a lot of the other local birding spots. We keep our camper on Humphrey Rd. Turtle Creek campground about 3 miles from Magee.

Great photos!

Today I saw cardinals and redpolls (and of course sparrows). Pretty sure I heard a robin, but I didn't see it.

I was surprised when my wife got dressed and was ready to go walking with me this morning.
Normally I walk alone with Dalhouise around ten.
Well today the three of us went hiking together. Cool at first but soon we boh were unzipping as we warmed up walking in bright sunshine.

The scenery was pretty amazing.
Bird sightings were alittle scarce but still rewarding..

We work at a children's camp. Spring and fall we have school groups come to learn team work and bonding or year end field trip. Summer is straight fun summer camp activities. I am in charge of managing the kitchen the owner just wants to come and eat and pay the bills everything else is left to me. I plan the menu - order supplies - keep a record of stock - cook all soups, sauces, entrees and also prepare and cook all special need menu items such as vegitarian, gluten free, egg and dairy free special needs..
My wife does all the baking and prepares food for a 30 - 40 item salad bar every lunch. I also help her with prep for this too
We make 90% of all our food from scratch.
We have home made bread every day - home made soup every lunch.
Ths sounds like a lot? It is... But we do it for six months with a few days off here and there. I am good at multi taskng but I do become grumpy as I tire out. However it is very satisfing to me to see happy faces eat my food.
We cook roast beef, Turkey, chicken, ham dishes.. Tacos, Mac and cheese ( not Kraft dinner but the real thing) we have a BBQ meal, grilled cheese with tomato soup, chicken fingers ( processed) you get the idea.
I make soup from the stock of the beef or chicken turkey meals and gravy all fresh.
If you are serving beef gotta have some Yorkshire pudding.. Yes I do that too and this is for children ...
I love my job other wise I would not be doing it ... But I get so tired by the end of next fall.

So you and your wife are chefs. Since it is seasonal, is it a resort or something that you work for? That is a lot of meals to fix.

I like naps - shorter ones would be better as I don't want to waste my days sleeping. Pain.. I know alittle about this too - I was involved in a head on car collision going back now almost ten years - I survived.... I healed above and beyond expectations thanks to the grace and mercy of God... But I do have pins and rods inside my body that help keep me humble. And pains that are both related from the accident and the fact I am not getting any younger...
Time... Right now I am unemployed - that is changing in 45 days or so as I have been told the start up date of my seasonal employment is April 11 --- then I won't have time for the fun things anymore for six months. That is not fully true I make time to have fun even during the working season.... But I do live and breath my job. I love my job. I treat it as I am the owner and thus. Must be on top of all things related to running the kitchen with care - pride - responsibility and love. Just so you have an idea I am given two younger usually immature - poorly motivated helpers to be my helpers - ie dishwashers front of the house people.. my wife and I do all cooking to feed 180 people three meals a day and a snack. So what time is left is given over for Rest..

All I did was nap too! Snow about 3 inches yesterday in NW Ohio. So March did come in like a lion, so I hope it leaves like a lamb. Wintery mix expected on Tues. Not looking forward to that either.

So today is / was the first day of March.. It came in cold like 4 c and rose to 8 c and it was overcast. I will declare it coming in like a lion so it will end like a lamb...
Living where I do - on the west coast of main land BC this month will usher in Spring - we are always a month ahead of the eastern provinces.. I think...
Today after church and a short visit with Mom I came home and napped for two hours.. I must had been real tired.

I don't think I am going to have any birds today. It is very windy and snowy. Later we are to get below zero temps. I think the birds will stay in the pine trees for shelter this weekend, although I know they need food to keep warm.

13 February .. The Great Backyard Bird Count has begun.
So since I am supposed to go count birds I need to see them..
I began counting from my Condo armchair
4 Stellar Jays, 2 Black capped Chickadees, 5 Darkeyed Juncos, 1 Song Sparrow, 5 House Finches, 4 Chestnut backed Chickadees

Then when I walked the Dalhouise I observed - 1 Northern Flicker, 2 Spotted Towhees,
9 Mallard Ducks, 1 Common Merganser, 5 Bald Eagles, 18 Canada Geese

Then I returned home ate lunch, became bored watching TV so I went out again to visit the estuary, hoping to see more birds.
I seen - 21 Common Mergansers, 9 Buffleheads, 1 Double Crested Cormorant, 5 Mallard Ducks, 1 Great Blue Heron, 7 Canada Geese, 8 Chestnut backed Chickadees, 2 Golden crown Kinglets - and on the way home my old friend the Northern Pygmy Owl was waiting by the side of the road perched in his tree branches looking for something to eat.
Not bad for day one...

Besides all that I hung up,at the Condo a humming bird feeder and a Niger seed sock feeder ... Let's see if any new birds come to check it out..

Didn't realize it has been a long time since posting on this. Have been very busy. I haven't done much birdwatching, but have heard there have been snowy owls in the area. I can't wait to get out at a state park to check them out. I hope I get to see one. Same with the local eagles.

Hope everyone is doing well.

I put a new team photo up for the team. This parakeet was at the Toledo Zoo in an exhibit where you could feed them. This bird climbed onto my hand and started chewing my hand. I think he was after the salt from sweating as it was hot that day. Hit bit hard a couple of time then I had to get him off me. It was fun to see all keets flying around you.

How is everyone doing? This team as become rather quiet and I see that it said it had an inactive team leader....me! Guess I need to start posting. Just been busy I guess. I took up kayaking at the end of August and have been having fun meeting new people in the group I kayak with. We kayak in the evening, so it is neat to see egrets gathering in the trees to roost at night.

I don't know where you are at, but the only bird in my book that has red on its face that I saw is a red-whiskered bulbul. They are in Florida.

I saw a bird which I'd say was grey with a red mark on the side of its head. It was smooth like a mourning dove, but not so plump. I can't figure out what it was! Did I imagine it?

I woud be so happy to one day live by the water and see ducks on a regular basis. -I live in the city. I do have my beloved backyard birdies which frolic in the stone bird bath -water I provide for them daily. They look sort of like ducks when they splash!

MAGNOLIA416 you are lucky to be able to see ducks. I LOVE ducks and to actually see them I'd have to travel far from where I live. But when I do, it's such a treat to see/watch them! emoticon

I just happened to click on Birdwatchers Team today-Its been awhile. But it reminded me what a nice team this is. Everyone loves birds here like me! Every day I watch birds at least for a little while. These days (in my yard here in LA,) I have mostly sparrows, blue jays, red robins. hummingbirds and doves. I love them all.

Yes, the parks to the east are bigger and better and you may see a variety of water birds and others. cullen park is a city park at the mouth of the Maumee River and Bay. It has a small walking path that goes on a causeway out to the river and a walking path to the south that has a loop along the river where the active eagles nest is at. They both get warblers. It goes also by a yatch club and coast guard station. The magazine is a free guide that you will probably find in the areas you are going.

Coming from Indiana and my sis is from Michigan. Which magazine are you talking about? It looks like Cullen Park is not too far from where we are planning to stay but we will mostly be headed in the other direction towards Magee Marsh. It is more of a NWR type area and will attract more birds than a city park. I looked up Cullen Park and it looks mostly like a city park with a boat launch.

White throat sparrow at my feeder today along with the chipping sparrows.

Where are you coming from? If you pick up the magazine when you get here, on page 58 there is an ad for Cullen Park, which down the road from where I live. You should check it out!!
There is an active bald eagles nest there.

Biggest Bird Week!....my sister and I are headed up for that next Monday. I hope the weather looks better than this week.

We just got back from a mega trip to Hawaii and added at least 45 new birds to our lists. That is a really fine place to bird and everything you see is new except for the Norther Cardinal and House Sparrow. People come from Australia to see the cardinal! We traveled fairly cheaply by renting houses and making our own food. They have Costco on three of the islands. Best bird found was Hawaii's rarest....the Palila. It is considered a honey creeper and its habitat is very threatened....mostly by feral pigs and goats! Had to go up to about 6000 feet on Maunaloa to see this one in the rain and fog and cold.

I love hearing the robins singing so early in the morning, when it is still dark! Spring finally made it to Ohio.

I am going to meet with a group in my community tomorrow. They are trying to get people here for the Biggest Birding Week next month. I am volunteering to help them out when I can.

I saw some red-winged blackbirds yesterday and I feel hope that the spring is here!

SophieMae2007, we have cardinals and a few robins here in Toronto all year round. I still like to see them though. I especially love the female cardinal. She isn't as showy as the male but I love to see her.
