I discovered a wild turkey and her 4 little ones in my fenced suburban backyard today. I was really surprised. Not sure how she got in (there is a 5' fence) and hoping she will be able to get out when she wants to. She brought the babies to the feeder and they all ate some of the seeds that have dropped on the ground. I looked on the map in the Peter's book, and they aren't supposed to be in my area (SW Ohio).

Slow and steady wins the race.

Yes, weight loss is hard, but being overweight and unhappy is harder.

My goal is to walk every other day, even if it is in and out at lunch time on work day's,
find a bird take a picture and post it as soon as I am able to.
I post my pictures on twitter for all people, even non Twitter users to see:
https://twitter.com/utopia4sharing
If I have more time I do some research about the animal and post it with little facts to keep it interesting.

Activity: 16,750 steps (7.8 miles)
373.4 miles walked since I bought my Fitbit on January 12th

This morning I sat on the couch - sat and sat waiting for the rain to fall. At lunch it remained just overcast so I decided to go for a walk seeking some birds. Knee is sore so I figured I would go easy and slow, however I wanted to reach my 10,000 step goal .. when I finally hobbled home, I was surprised at how far I had walked. But I'm extremely pleased with the birds I seen.
I couldn't photograph a blue heron nor the woodpecker nor the raven, but I did see ones I never or rarely see here in Squamish.
Enjoy.....

It's not raining and I have no appointments to think about so I take the Dalhouise on a little walk around our neighbourhood pond.

What did I see? You ask!
Let me show you ...

I can not walk fast because of my knee pain and Dalhouise age. So I get to slow down and just enjoy my moments and smell the forest or a flower or two

Dalhouise was being watched

As I was walking around the pond in a light drizzle I was thinking it strange I was not seeing any birds at all. I didn't expect to see people - rain keeps most inside, but I was sure I would see Ducks. Well just when I was about to call it quits and leave the pond, this little guy caught my attention. Beautiful...
Then to my surprise two other human dog walkers also came along. I'd rather just see the birds..

Yes. I wish my mom would take that advise. She has worn herself thin. I have a sister staying with her and she is receiving hospice care. It has been rough on my mom and having a childdie before her. My sister has ovarian cancer.

Here a few pictures from the Biggest Week in American Birding. Live about a 1/2 hour from Magee Marsh, Black Swamp Bird Observatory, where the "festival" is held. I live in Toledo, OH. The Bald Eagle was taken a Cullen Park in Toledo....a few blocks from my house. All these birds can be seen at the park, but I like to get out of town.

I, home here just watching the rain pour out of the sky, enjoying the wet visitors getting an easy meal at the feeders. Later today the plan is to go swimming at the local pool when it is half price. Monday to Friday between 11:30 and 1. You only pay two dollars per person instead of the normal five dollars. ( I think it is five) all I do know two dollars is a fantastic price.
Of course I will have to take Dalhouise out for a morning walk in this down pour before that swim .. Oh Dalhouise..

I was in Gaspé, Québec and saw all kinds of birds even though I didn't have much time for birding.

Black-Legged Kittiwakes
Harlequin Ducks
Common Eiders
Black Guillemots
Common Murres
Razorbills
Northern Gannets
Black Winged Gulls
Ruby-Throated Hummingbird

more...can't remember now. I'm just starting to learn how to enter what I see into e-Bird so I have a record all in one place instead of the little notebooks in my binocs case!

Biggest week was very disappointing this year between the hot humid days, high winds, monsoon rains and cold temperature days I barely saw any warblers. In past years the trees would be full of beautiful birds. I wonder if the winds just blew them all right across lake Erie! I did have a nice week off of work though on a positive note. I did get to see an owl in the wild. My first!

I went to Sandy Reservation yesterday. There were a few Coots in the water, A snowy Egret, An Eagle and 2 Eaglets in the nest. A few straggler migrating ducks, Nuthatch, Gray Gnatcatcher, House Finch, Woodpeckers calling in the woods, the usual Cardinals, Robins, and Blue Jays. Kind of disappointing.

Lots of the activities may be booked up. You need go to their website and register and see what trips and activities still have open spaces. I think today may be the last day you can do this. You can also get on a waiting call list in case of cancellations and last minute openings. If there isn't anything left open that you want to do the only reason to register is to get into the evening get togethers at Maumee Bay, and get discounts at local restaurants and hotels etc. You don't need a badge to go anywhere on any of the properties, and since you are local you know a lot of the local birding spots without taking a bus trip to them. There will be maps of all the local birding places available at BSBO or Maumee Bay. Get the 2015 guidebook . They are distributed all around local buisnesses in their front vestibules.

I was reading the website and activities. My understanding is that you have to register ($35) and then pay for that activity you would like to join. Or do I just pay the $10 and not register for that activity? Hope that makes sense. I have a friend coming up from Columbus the first weekend and we are going together. She is new at birding. I am planning that week to be off just to go to the parks and wander and watch..

I'll be working at the BSBO information table on May 9th from 9:00am to 1:00 pm. I have some paid activities, a workshop on Thursday the 14th, Woodcocks walk on Monday night the 11th, and a few travel talks. I mostly will be on the boardwalk. I'm going to make trips to Oak Openings, Pearson Park, Metzger Marsh, and a lot of the other local birding spots. We keep our camper on Humphrey Rd. Turtle Creek campground about 3 miles from Magee.
