This thread reminds me of a thread in Fitness & Exercise where everyone gives thanks to God for losing weight. I'm thinking to myself did he workout for you, did he eat for you etc...Just very bizarre for me to read the stuff they put down~

kali ... imho, it's brainwashing. And the dogma goes something like this: humans suffer in this life to get a reward in the next life. This life is nothing. So, despite one's own hard work, compassion, and general goodness, they can't own their good times. They give it to God and thank God for taking it away because what they really want is more suffering.

I think there is madness in that truth.

It's funny, Kali, reading the Bible is what made my hubby an atheist. I'm surprised a Catholic high school would point out contradictions. You were very lucky!

It's kind of funny, reading the Bible in Catholic High School really got me started on the path to Athiesm. (Thankfully it was a very good school that openly pointed out the contradictions and did comparative religions)

When I was joining the cult I was in, they made me "study the Bible" to indoctrinate me into their views. I'm not saying that your brother and his wife are in a cult, but it's to get everyone in the church on the same page. This way there is better unity and all that other stuff I guess.

What I want to know is why people have to have sessions or classes to join a church? Doesn't their God accept everyone? What happens if they fail their classes? My mom told me this weekend that my brother and his wife have to take classes every Sunday evening to join the church that they have been attending. Just seems wrong? I like my ways better but won't begrudge them what they feel makes them whole.

It's just what they've been taught... When something good happens, it's God's will. When you pray for every little thing in your life, some are bound to happen and that's an "answered prayer" so then you get dependent on thinking that every good thing comes from a god. Plus, you are taught to be humble and give the credit to god, so if you take credit for yourself for something you have done, then you are blaspheming god.

It is what they are taught, god gives you trials to make you strong, blah, blah, blah. I always want to ask them a) if god really cared about you, then why did you have the car accident, did your house burn down, did the tornado hit your house, b) if the tornado hit the house down the street and killed an newborn, was that gods will? and c) why hasn't god burned my house down, hit me with a tornado and a car accident. They see god in all the every day activities. A co worker thanked god because she found a parking space in a parking lot. There is no hope for these people. It is pablum

Something that has been frustrating me lately is the fact that people are giving the credit for all of their (or someone else's) hard work and assigning it to their god instead.

I just cannot get my head around the fact that someone put in a year of hard work and pushing past their own weaknesses and then takes none of the credit for doing so?

I would love to know why... any ideas?
