i agree..it doesn't just say "this is bad for you" and leave it at that... It helps you find a healthier alternative. :)

What I like most about this article is not just the awareness of the nasty little things that go into some of our foods, but the abundance of links to food alternatives and good ideas for snacking, meals, and shopping juxtaposed within the list which I will enjoy checking up on tonight! Thanks for posting!

Where two or more are gathered there is love.

I think xanthan gum should be on that list - it is a corn-derived product, and some people with a mild corn allergy/intolerance (which is very common) have a severe reaction to xanthan gum because the process by which it is derived concentrates certain substances. And it is in EVERYTHING - I have to read labels very carefully for my hubby (who can eat fresh and frozen corn with no issues, but starts having problems at the level of masa/corn meal and things get worse from there as the level of processing increases....) - crazy stuff you'd never suspect a "thickener" would be added to - like yogurt! - as well as many salad dressings, etc.

It's also heavily used in gluten-free products, so when he was eliminating wheat because of a suspected wheat allergy, he actually made things worse by eating all the substitute products until we figured out the xnathan gum thing (almost completely by accident!).

Another problem: "Corn" is never identified as an allergen in products whose only corn component is xanthan gum.

There was a time when "fruit flavored" and "cheese flavored" meant "made with real fruit" and "made with real cheese." Today? It's artificial everything. Most of the food at your local supermarket is no more authentic than Snooki's tan. Our fruit comes packaged in Loops, our cheese delivered via Whiz. Sure, it's edible, but there's no way your great grandparents would recognize this junk as food.
