I agree with Julie: Parents need to wrestle back control from their kids and just tell them NO. It really is an ok word for them to hear and will not cause them any detriment. How can i justify this?? look at our generation: don't tell them no because it will cause harm to their self esteem...entitlement to all leads to overweight, poor health choices and people that have no idea how to manage or cope with any negativity in life... Our generation is a MESS.

Don.. You need a bigger soapbox because i want to stand next to you on it. emoticon

Wow!! My only concern with the studies that SP uses is that they are generally not comprehensive studies. I'd certainly be interested in for research though.

We do watch more tv than I would like, but most of it is commercial free. That being said, I have no problem telling my daughter no; especially as I gain more awareness about food/health.

BOTH! It's not an either / or thing! As my latest blog (among other posts) will attest: I am rabidly opposed to corporate messages sent to the masses via commercials...children and adults alike! The Revolution Will Not Be Televised: it is up to US what we buy, eat, wear, etc. The challenge is to be as critical as possible of all the media messages that inundate us every day! These messages have as uppermost concern the corporate bottom line which may or MAY NOT have OUR best interests in mind...!

Having It Your Way does NOT have to mean downing bazillions of calories!

Soapbox Dismount...! :-)

We do watch a bit of TV, but we have not had cable for years - we watch Netflix or shows we've purchased on iTunes. My DD does not ask for specific packaged treats unless I have bought the item before, or she sees a classmate with it & most of the time she doesn't ask for it by name, but tries to describe it. I think I'll blame commercials emoticon
