I beginning to think the less I know the better! I try really hard to buy local and organic meat, but it isn't the easiest thing to find. I wish they had better regulation for how animals are raised and the safety of meat.

Michelle.. that is EXACTLY how i always felt growing up with the raising of the animal and different crops. We had an acre and 1/2 dedicated to a garden.. the 1/2 acre one is one we'd GIVE away to people who were poor.. and we were barely in the middle class zone.

oh and nothing irratates me more when you ask a kid where bacon comes from and they say: THE STORE... uh NO!

I like your way of looking at it , Michelle and Gwen. I have been wanting to get to a point of being more self sufficient for a while now, and this just makes me MORE DETERMINED!

I didn't watch the video, but a) that is gross and b) I'm not surprised...

We have been buying sides of beef from a local rancher for a while now and we're also getting eggs as often as we can from a friend who has a small flock of chickens. The eggs and beef both have so much more flavor and texture than store bought! We don't actually get our chicken from her, as she freezes her few culls each year for personal consumption, but I try to buy free-range as often as I can. We don't hunt, but when friends or relatives get their deer each fall, we help butcher if any is donated our way. We probably still eat more meat than we should, but being more aware of the sources of your food does make you more conscious of how your choices affect your health AND the earth's health too...

Not to get too weird about it, but I also feel more of a spiritual connection to the animal when I am closer to the source - when i shake the hand that raised the animal or plucked the egg from the next, or wielded the bow, I am literally one connection away from touching the living animal that my food came from. As opposed to picking up a plastic wrapped package that ran through 30 miles of production lines from the last person who came anywhere near the animal. And eating nourishes our spirits as well as our bodies, so this helps me feel that more...

i can see how you would be.. We only had 10 acres, but we were a small self suffiecient farm. We had 3 huge chest freezers: 1 for meat, 1 for vegetables, and 1 for fruit.. what wasn't frozen was canned by hand.. I"ve been doing that kind of stuff since i was 5. My parents taught us that you love, care and respect the animals and in return they did provide us with food. it was a natural cycle of life. Oh.. and one thing my sister learned: you never name your food source... they weren't pets.

Personally, I think if technology were suddenly STOp and not exist.. there'd be alot of people out there either struggling or learning quick.

I'll admit to feeling like a hypocrite eating meat being too squeamish to consider doing anything like that, but ...but it is what it is...lol!

see i take a different approach: back to raising my own meat: cow/pig/chicken and butchering them ourself.. no need for meat glue. and while i have yet to do this as an adult. I did help my father do this as a kid.we had 100% contrtol over the quality of meat we had.. and produce too.. I miss those days.

Yep, yet more inspiration to follow Michael Pollan's Basic Food Rule:

Eat Food
Mostly Plants
Not Too Much

Can't get much more simple than that! :-)

Oh... My... God!!!!!! This is TOO DISGUSTING! I didn't know that this went on!

I don't eat a lot of meat anyway, but this will definitely cut back on what I DO eat.
