I sent the checks out to both of those Julie.. right before i had my episode on the 11th.. I'm serisously hoping i can do both.. I Know i can pull off the 4 miler.. the 9 mile 15K might be iffy.. even though my last big run was 8.5 miles... DARN BODY!

And to add to the challenge, I just wrote the checks for the St. Pat's 4 miler and the Forks XV. They'll go out in the mail tomorrow.

LOL! If people want to take on the challenge, I'd love the competition! It's nice to have the big (expensive) races out of the way and paid for. Just one more large event I'm considering (The Empire State HM in Syracuse in October) and the rest are all local races.

Cool! I'll have to miss the St. Pat's 4 miler, but I'm in for Red Dress.

Looking forward to seeing what you'll decide to do in October.

I registered for the Boilermaker today. $35 for the 15K. They put a cap on it this year and they're saying it might be filled by early March. Register soon if you plan to run it this year!

I also think I'm going to do the Empire State Half Marathon 10/16.

That's what I ended up getting. But mine is light blue all over. It will be warmer, no doubt! The guy let me try it on in the store and I ended up with the kids size one. The adult ones would have been huge on me!

Guess I'm just a big kid!

As for my race schedule. It looks like I will NOT be running in the St. Pats 4 miler this year. I need to take a grad class that day. =(

I do, but I haven't shared any of them publicly for privacy sake (most start and end at my house). If someone was interested, they could certainly PM me the distance they were interested in and I'd be happy to share.

Do you have them mapped out in your SP Fitness Maps?

FWIW: I've save a number of routes under my fitness maps...mostly for cycling, but some other ones too.

ROFL! You guys are funny!

Glad you liked that link. It's neat to see what courses are available. I have a whole bunch of courses mapped out for the west side of Binghamton too, all different lengths, if anyone needs one.

there are 2 different courses that I know of within Ots. Park for a 5K. One they use for the Spiedie Fest and the other one they use for the Womens Run, snow Fever and others. Maybe if you look those runs up in the TCRC site thye would have a map????

I'm pretty sure they have an USATF certified course for 5K, 8K and 10K. You can go the site:
www.usatf.org/routes/
and search for what ever routes you'd like. I'll try and find the 5k link when I have more time.

Yeah, I have sport style earbuds that loop over the ear. It should work, I'm concerned about the pressure points on the side of my head and a gap in the coverage.

Many of the new headphones are of the "behind the neck" design which wouldn't interfere with the headband.

Sounds like this was held @ Otsiningo...?

Up by the rest area bathrooms.. you loop around that and then make a left onto the road to go counterclockwise towards the park opening... at theopening you turn around and follow the road back to the rest room.. do that 3 times.. Finish was back up between the restroom and pavillion. A snoozer... definately need tunes next time :)

I agree with Julie that the race route was a little boring.. I"m thinking of making a new podcast this week and bringing it with me. I will say that it was disheartening to be lapped by the some of the higher caliber runners.. But knowing that they WERE higher caliber AND we were running with them does help you push through and gives you a goal to work for.. I know there was one kid.. and i say kid because i'm 37 and he looked WAY younger than me actually lapped me TWICE...each time he said.. You're doing good.. Keep it UP! And i heard him say it to a couple of ladies in front of me... So it's nice to see that even someone at a higher caliber can cheer a newbie runner like me on...

Oh and i forgot to mention my own milestone yesterday.. If it wasn't for Julie asking about it.. I would've not realized it for awhile...lol.. Yesterday was my FIRST 10K! Whoot!

I'll second what Gwen said. It was cold! The race is a pretty easy (if boring) course though. I set a new PR for myself for this distance but still finished farther back than I would have liked. I need to keep reminding myself that most of the people daring the freeze are diehard runners-including marathoners and triatheletes that have been doing it for years. It really is an accomplishment just to be out there with them.

Could've been worse.. Could've been the crazy guy running in SHORTS emoticon Actually it wasn't bad.. I layered well.. In fact after we started our first 1/2 of the figure 8 i was a little cold.. but by the time i got to the second 1/2 i had to unzip my running jacket for most of the way.. I was a sweaty pig...Lol.. I had a sports bra, workout tank, workout long sleeve and then the running turtle neck, then my heavier running jacket.. had thick running tights and then light windbreaker pants on after that... By then time i was done.. I was sweating so bad.. Julie noticed that my hair and headband had frosted..lol... what can i say.. I'm a sweater.. I do need to finesse a post workout change.. Because by the time i got home even with the heater on i was chilled.. and i had sweat to the point that my exterior running jacket was damp. So it was cold if you were standing still or the crazy guy in shorts... Catch my blog later for the rest of race. :)

So...how was it? I drove by on the highway - had a lot of errands to run this morning - and saw the lot of you running around. Sorry I wasn't there b/c I like to race but "gladder" I was in my warm car.emoticon

On another note tho, our first stop was at the wonderful Chenango POint Cycle shop to get clipless pedals/shoes for bike season. Had to order the size in the ones I liked so another few weeks before I can start practicing with them.

"fear, anxiety and excitment"...? Thinking about the doing the cycling leg of the Tri certainly brings a lot of THOSE emotions to the fore...!

fear, anxiety and excitment are VERY common for those of us contemplating our first "race". Just that word almost scares us back to the couch. emoticon that is why I prefer "run".

I started in April (2008) and the first workout was FINDING the treadmill down in the cellar. First walking, then I'd try to run through commercials, then I'd run and take walk breaks during commercials. The C25K is a great program and I still now will do a 9 min run/1 min walk for my long runs. I planned to to have the 5K at the Spiedie Fest be my first but then I got the info for the Lee Barta run and that was actaully my first one.

To help set your mind at ease a little, I have never met a more kind, helping, supportive group as runners/triathletes. We as newbies feel intimidated and like we really shouldn't be there but they are very reassurring and helpful. Don't be afraid to ask questions.

There are a few of us that have plans to do a few of the same 5K's this year so you be sure and let us know which ones you are going to do and we'll be there to cheer you on.

Once you do one, then you say - "ok, "next time" I bet I can do it in XX amount of time" and there you go...you're off. Most importantly, have fun with it b/c it really is fun.

Good luck, keep us posted on your progress!

Don't be afraid to ask questions, we all got lost at some point on this site.

As for my running, I started last March with the Couch to 5K program. I graduated that in May and ran my first 5K that weekend. My first official (read: timed) 5K was in July (The Parlor City 5K). I did well but running has come pretty naturally to me.

Just go for it! You won't regret it.

Sometimes I feel like an idiot on this site but I know I should feel like at least I'm learning something new. I knew I had posted to this discussion but couldn't figure out where it went....didn't realize that there was another page.

Thanks for all of the info! I'm kinda scared to think about actually following through with this but I know I need to just do it! So how long had you been running before you signed up for your first 5K? How did you do your first race?

Ha! I'd definitely do the 5K part of the Tri if I could find a team, I'm not up for the running or biking yet. maybe next year.

I agree that we'll need to meet up pre-race. We'll have to post a thread before each race so we can make plans.

As for the Freeze Series, I have no problem running in the cold. It's on my list of tentative races, but I need to find a sitter unless it's warm enough to bundle up the 4 year old.

I'd actually really like to do it, as well as join TCRC. We'll see what Saturday brings.

Very impressive schedules ladies!

Looks like we all have quite a few "definates" in common so we'll have to find a way to meet up before or after and say hello.

OH except Julie "forgot" to add the Broome County Tri to her list emoticon

I won't do the January Freeze - first off I am a wimpy outside runner in the winter and second, I am just starting back after not doing anything for about 3 weeks and not up to a 10K. So sad how quickly the fitness fades.

Have a great, active day everyone!

Here is my preliminary schedule...

Races I definitely plan to run are:
St. Pat's 4 miler in March
Forks 15K in March
April-TBD
Bridge Run Half Marathon in May
June-TBD
Boiler Maker 15K in July
Warrior Dash in August
Thater 5K in August
Sept-TBD
October Fast 10K in October
Marine Corp Full Marathon in October
Turkey Trot 8K on Thanksgiving

There are other 5Ks, 8Ks and Trail Run 5Ks that I am considering, but many of them depend on mine and hubby's schedules.

I'm also conflicted because I generally do my long runs on either Saturday or Sunday. If I commit to a 5K, then it kind of throws off my self-imposed training schedule. Unless I ran the race and then just kept going.

As much as I would love to do the "short run", I don't think I can make the trip this year.

Where do you find all of these races? I'm just getting into running & would like to run a few 5Ks this spring but have no idea where to find local races. Just reading all of your goal races makes me motivated (but just to run a 5K...can't imagine anything longer)!

I've been invited by a few of the really active members (nationally) of SparkPeople to join them in "Just A Short Run" in Pittsburgh this March. I'm sure others would be welcome and it would be such a cool way to network with some SUPER PUMPED and PSYCHED members of SparkPeople!:

www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/groups_individ
ual.asp?gid=45321

"Come and join your fellow Spark runners and walkers as we complete "Just A Short Run" in Pittsburgh PA on March 26, 2011. Events 5k and 8.1 m run/ walk, 13.1 m, 13.1m relay and 30k."

Feel free to SparkMail either of the two SparkTeam leaders (BOBBYD31 or JAN_FRANDSEN) if you'd like to join and they can share more details. There is someone assisting in recommending hotels / places to stay, etc. There are 65 Team members so far. Bobby & Jan are AWESOME fellows. Bobby and his wife Anne (MIAMIA7...another AWESOME Sparker!) presented at the Cincinnati SparkConvention last year and Jan is a SUPER runner / cyclist who is FOREVER doing fund-raiser marathons for many causes, but most especially cancer-related.

Funny...my "want to" list is a LOT bigger than my "probably more realistic" list. emoticon

One good thing, all the fees are usually for a good cause.

Besides a few 5K's, I want to do the St Pats 4 miler (March) Binghamton Half Marathon (May). The Broome County Triathlon (July). Utica Boliermaker (July). Cayuga Triathlon (August) and the Octoberfast 10K (October)

That is the realistic list....the other list has 16 events on it LOL
