This is especially true if we think about enjoying a new and SPARKED way of life. If we think back on special times, high quality exchanges with others, memorable, heartfelt conversations...during such times how often are we stuffing our faces with food...?

Uh, next to like NEVER...!

I like the idea of putting people, connection & communication first...WAY ahead of food! I think that tips the scales toward having more quality during our social times!

iagree Julie.. i think as a society sometimes we focus on the food and forget about the company... Great idea to turn the tables so to speak and put more emphasis on people first.. FOOD second! :)

Oy, the holidays! My keys are going to be lots of water, moderation and exercise.

I think it's important to slow down and remember to enjoy the company as well as the food. Often I'll load up a second plate before the first has hit my stomach. This year I would like to be more aware, slow down and have conversations and not stuff myself until I feel like I need to be rolled to the car.

Besides, it I eat too uch, it might affect my running!

thanks don! I'm going to go read that now.. I also drink one glass of water before my meals.. I notice it helps me eat more proportionally.

Joy Bauer’s Guide to Avoiding Holiday Weight Gain
Get strategies for enjoying this year’s celebrations without putting on a pound

I like and have used these two strategies mentioned:

"Drink lots of water—including two glasses before lunch and two glasses before dinner. Mild dehydration mimics the sensation of hunger, and drinking water prior to a meal starts to fill you up before you take your first bite of food so you’ll eat less.

Eat plenty of "Unlimited Foods" throughout the day. These foods contain few or no calories, which is why you can eat as much as you want of them. Make sure you have a variety on hand at all times. This will prevent you from reaching for something less healthy when hunger strikes. Snacking on these foods will also keep you from feeling deprived while you’re saving on calories for a party that night."

As a partial vegetarian bringing a dish has saved me many times. One of my favorite things to bring is just a tossed salad with chick peas added for some protein. I also bring a dressing that I like.
Gwen, I love the tighter pants idea, gonna have to remember that.
Good post Don!

Bringing a "safe" dish is something we often do and it has saved the day a number of times!

plan ahead! if i know i have a birthday party on the weekend.. I always stay to my lower end of the ranges during the week so it will balance out...

then of course there's my favorite phrase: "NO thank you"... to extra anything...

also thinking ahead to be able to swap stuff out.. Do i REALLY want the bread roll vs the piece of cake later... it's all about balance and choice...

And of course i always offer to bring a dish.. that way i have a safety net of KNOWING what the food content it is of what i'm bringing and i don't have to guess at others...

To help my guests out... If the serving spoons are of the plastic variet..i have on the back of the handle there serving size( i've precalculated it, if it's metal.. I have a certain set that i know what is a certain amount...

because my sisters and i love to swap recipes.. If they bring a dish.. they bring the recipe... so that way we all know what it is and we can make it later.. At large gatherings that's always fun to do..that way if people say "how'd you make that".. i can just give them the sheet...

my absolute no fail stop me in my tracks for gatherings... wearing pants that are a little snug.. definately prevents any over eating. lol

We're fast approaching that "certain" time of year again...! Treacherous waters ahead!

Merry ThanksGive-o-ween!

In my family we have scads of birthdays and anniversaries peppered into this season as well.

So how are we all going to pull through this season without giving ourselves the *ahem* "GIFT" of extra pounds?!?!

What kinds of triggering situations lie ahead which can trip up our efforts to lead healthy and well lifestyles and how can we proactively head them off at the pass?!?!

Post away your struggles and solutions!
