No, not really.... but I like Sangria, I am not one for carbonated alcohol.

I am in Italy now on a two week vacation with my wife. We are in Port Ercole on the Med. coast for a week then headed to a villa at a winery (Il Borro) in Chianti... and not far from Montalcino and Montepulciano. So far it has been great!

These events are great educational opportunities... but the quality of the wine and/or the food lacks. Price range has been $35 - $45 and I find that to be good value. However, I would much prefer to pay $100 and enjoy top drawer wine and food.
Also, I would like to sample wine/food pairings that DO NOT WORK... just to see what a bad pairing would be compared to the suggested pairings.

without ice, but chilled to 50-55 degrees... that is my preference for all wine.

When at a restaurant and ordering wine..

This or that;

1. Ask waiter for a recommendation?

2. No, it is VERY rare that I ask for a recommendation.

Buy them - on occassion.

I like the self serve aspect, the sealed storage protection (no oxidation), and of course, the cost. These make for nice party dispensers. Especially (for me) with white wines. I certainly prefer box deliveries better than jug wine. (heavy bottles!)

LOL - Both

I belong to about 6 wine clubs, two of which select and send me bottles about four times a year. They have my "wine profile" and do a pretty good job of "nailing" their selections for me. This results in 36 bottles purchased. The other four clubs are at various wineries in California that send me an announcement once a year, informing me of my "allocation" for their vintage release. I also belong to three wine newsletters (wine.com, WTSO.com and JJBuckley.com) that are always sending me great deals to look at. I average about 200 bottles per year in purchases and "gifts". I shop for VALUE - high points at great price points.

95-97% of our bottles are consumed within 24-30 hours. On those occasions that the bottle lasts longer, it was usually my wife's choice of wine, and she does not mind drinking wine, especially chilled, white wine, over 3 to 5 days. About 99% of the time any wine that we decant is finished, at the latest, the next day (we cover the open end of the carafe with plastic wrap for overnight keeping. If the wine bottle is a screw cap, I have found it will keep very well, out of sun and heat for 3 to five days. For our open, unconsumed corked wines, I will store them in the refrigerator to help them last longer. Again, up to 3 to 5 days. We only use those experimental "value wine" purchases that just did not live up to expectations for sauces and glazes. I have, at times, froze the wine in my ice cube tray and put the cubes in bags for deglazing pans and sauce additives. BTW, I have NEVER used those 'wine keeper' devices that force nitrogen into the bottle to dispace the oxygen.

This or that:
Summer parties with wine. Do you put our "glass" wine glasses; OR "plastic" wine glasses OR plastic containers that will also be used for mixed drinks and soda?

OH, btw, We have about a dozen wine openers - one cost over $80. My favorite, 'go to' opener is a waiter style / switch blade action opener that I bought at a little hole in the wall party store just down the street from our hotel during a trip to San Francisco three years ago. It is not fancy, but has nice weight and fits perfect in my hand. Metal parts for the work with a nonslip, synthetic body with black and dark grey tones. I belive the cost was around $12. I should have bought all that were in the display, some 4 or 5, because there is no way to replace the corkscrew, and although it still operates perfectly after opening some 800 bottles, the corkscrew will eventually wear out. Alas, I can not find the style on the internet, nor remember the name of the party store.

Number of wine openers- definitely more than 4. I've got a few waiter's corkscrews, one "ah-so" (rarely used as I have never been able to get the hang of the technique), a rabbit-ears type, an electric opener, and a couple butterfly openers. We keep a standard corkscrew type in the gloveboxes of our 2 vehicles-- always frustrating to get into a hotel room with a bottle you've brought along, realize you've forgotten a corkscrew, encounter a front desk that doesn't have one on hand, and find that it's long past the hour when a supermarket or wine shop nearby would be open.

It is hard to find really large glass vases for corks, but that's what I do with many of mine- I have one "huge" one, and 3 or 4 smaller ones, though still large. I write dates and brief "memos" on each cork, like, "Twins graduate" or "Happy 50th birthday, Bob", etc. People love to go through them and read them... some great memories/stories are started by those corks!

This or that: Finish an open bottle....even if it's been more than 48 hours since opening? Or use it in "spaghetti sauce"......etc.

I save my corks - in different "holders". I have a decorative wire birdcage shaped cork holder and some different shaped bottles - all packed full. I am looking for a large clear glass water jug - maybe 10 to 20 gallon size for the rest of my "collection" that is now in several gallon sized zip lock plastic bags.in the basement.

Dennis, I'd like to try a filtered funnel over my decanter next time i encounter a very tannic wine. I've tried lots of gadgets, with little difference in result. The hyperdecant is suggested by Nathan Myhrvold author (inventor) of The Modernist Cuisine cookbook series, which my sister in law bought for me for my birthday (She works for him at Intellectual Ventures in Seattle). I actually read about his blender dencanting in the latest issue of Wine Spectator. I wouldn't want to try it with my "daily use" blender, as my husband uses this to mix horrid vegan protein shakes with algae. Can't imagine what lurking residue might produce in a wine, in terms of off flavors/aromas! Yuk! So until I can purchase a blender dedicated to wine decanting, I'll hold off on trying this.

Glasses: If I am having friends over for a wine tasting event in my home, I'll get particular about using wide-bowled glasss for reds (air) and narrow-bowled glasses for whites (to keep cool), but really, I just grab any glass and pour on a daily-drink basis.

This or that: Save your corks for "something".... or toss them?

Aeration method - neither traditional (slowly pouring the wine from the bottle into the decanter and stopping just short of letting residue sediment into the decanter) nor do I use hyperdecanting in a blender, only because I am unfamiliar with this method.

I use a filtered funnel over the top of my glass decanter and then pour the wine through a vin-aerator device that oxygenates the wine as it passes through it - and place the vin-aerator above the filtered funnel. On high tanic wine I often do this two or three times, introducing more and more oxygen to the wine.

This or That:

Custom sized wine glasses for each type of wine... or one glass for most all wines?

I read (in my "bible", "What to drink with what you eat"- Dornenburg) that a sparkling syrah "hits all the high notes", when trying to pair with something as varied as a Thanksgiving meal. They list a few on Snooth, but I didn't get my act together in time to order/try.

Fresh fruit? I'd probably choose the Sweet German white/riesling. If there was cheese or cheesy filling involved, I'd go for the champagne to help cut through the fat.

NEVER! is not my choice - it has an air of finality to it.

I find great value for my every day drinking wines at Costco from time to time. I also look for value at Meijers (large grocery/home/general merchandise). Most (70%) of my purchases are on line at WTSO.com (Wine Till Sold Out) and Wine.com. The rest, besides the big box stores, are from four different wine managers at three upscale gourmet shops and a wine/nut/cheese store. Then there are five Napa winery clubs that send me allocations of their wine. I purchase about 200 to 250 bottles per year.

What a lovely tribute to your talented family!

Printer: alas, I am still tethered. I only recently let go of a wired mouse when I had to purchase one on a trip and found only wireless ones available. We tried to get the wireless connection for our printer working from my computer, but for some reason it would scramble the signal and the printing would be off...margins offset and stuff like that.

Anyway,

How about fill will purchased family art. LOL

Our son is a fine artist in San Fran. - we buy his work to help show support.
I am a photographer - cheap art - family, nature, and other eclectic shots
Our nephew is a REAL photographer - we have one of his photo books on our coffee table
One of our other sons is a writer - mostly for stage, but we have one of his poems on a wall
