LARP is deceptive as exercise because it does not always feel like a profound work-out. The reason? You're full of adrenaline and having fun. But if your LARP is anything like the ones I attend, it takes easily three days for my body to recover after a large scale battle. Mind you I wear full steel armour and spend much of the event on my feet.

LARP is special because it brings out a lot of the primal bodily responses you won't get in an exercise class or the gym. You are under sever stress, hopped on adrenaline, fighting on your bodily reserves and all your senses are alert. I can't count the amount of times I've staggered slowly onto the battle, barley able to walk, and then watched a friend of mine trapped as he is being defeated by a monster, and I'm running full speed, leaping over logs and charging as if I'm wearing nothing but cloth over to save him.

LARP count as exercise, it is high intensity, full body exercise, but it is also very easy to over eat or eat badly or make up the calories in alcohol when at LARP.

;)

Larping definitely counts as exercise, especially if you keep that in mind while you are playing. So just keep moving around; don't sit down on breaks or anything. I play Humans vs. Zombies at school (short games, week-long, Capture the Flag) and it's definitely exercise. I've been running for my freaking life across campus for 10 minutes at a time or more, and it doesn't even feel like running for exercise because I'm so into the game.

One of the things I did and will try to do again is wear a pedometer. If you wear one every day and you have your daily steps goal, you can easily do the same at a LARP. When I did that (since I re-starting the whole diet/work out thing) I noticed that LARP was the easiest place for me to reach my daily steps goal. I just tried to make sure I was going on a ton of the modules rather than just hanging out at the town tavern/bar. That made a huge difference. The other thing I found was actually going through the motions of living as my character made a huge difference. If there was not much activity going on, finding a small place to fight an imaginary creature helped. Then I was practicing for the next fight and preparing in character for it while out of character working on my steps and getting my heart rate up.

Hope this helps a bit.

And the day came when the risk it took to remain tight inside the bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.

Hope you can make it out!!

Jogging in place might not be a bad idea. I found that when I sat down my joints got pretty stiff. I'll have to keep that in mind. Thanks for the suggestions!! I'll have to let you know how many steps I can get in during a weekend. Next event is in October. :)

When I've done LARPing, I often would job in place while standing up... at least to get the steps in. Too much sitting made me downright antsy.

Congratulations! I'm glad it's going so well. I've heard really good things about it. My bf and I are hoping to go to either the next event or the one after that. I haven't larped much, just 2 NERO events for me, but he was more active in it than I was.

I have played NERO (yes that is where MWE comes from - Spice is my character name). This weekend I was playing Numina, a new Accelerant Larp that I help staff in VA. www.numinalarp.com. We've had three events so far and all have been very successful and have gotten rave reviews. =D So happy!

You're very welcome! Just out of curiosity, which system do you play? I'm wondering if the MWE in your name is for Mystic Wood Elf, or if it's just a coincidence.

Thanks so much for weighing in on this! I definitely got a lot of exercise this weekend and am VERY sore. Next time I might consider using the HR monitor or pedometer at least to get an idea of how active I am. Thanks so much!! :)

Now to eat better while larping... grr.

Hey! I asked my bf to weigh in on this and he suggests that you should track it as running or jogging. He also would like to know if you're using a PVC or ultralight weapon. If you use a PVC weapon, you could probably count that as strength training for your arms. I think there's also a way to track miscellaneous activity on the fitness tracker. If you can wear it discreetly with your costume, you may also want to consider using a pedometer or heart rate monitor if you have one to monitor your exercise.

My friends back in Indiana LARP. I would say when you are actually battling in the field it could easily be counted! Just keep track PCMCIA long the battles last and such!

I'm not a larper, but if you are active and break a sweat, it sure sounds like exercise to me!

Hi there Gamer Girls!

I was wondering if any larpers could chime in with their thoughts. This weekend I will be NPCing (monstering, DMing, etc.) at a larp. Since I will be missing my normal Friday evening workout because of the event, do you think I could count monstering one large scale field battle as any sort of exercise. I tend to break a sweat and fight pretty hard (I love being a girl fighter type), but I'm not sure how that would count towards exercise or if it would count.

Thoughts? Thanks in advance!
