Stumbled across this little "bit" on Wikipedia while looking up info about fibromyalgia and guaifenesin (the active ingredient in Mucinex and other mucus-thinning over-the-counter meds):
"Guaifenesin is a uricosuric, increasing excretion of uric acid from the blood serum into the urine. This fact was discovered by chance, during a survey of hypouricemia in hospital inpatients. "
I don't have time today to look much further into it, but that would mean that Mucinex should theoretically lower the plasma concentration of uric acid. Wonder if any studies have been done on this? Stay tuned!
Sadly for fibro sufferers, guaifenesin doesn't seem to perform any better than placebo.
The great enemy of truth is very often not the lie--deliberate, contrived and dishonest--but the myth--persistent, persuasive and unrealistic. Too often we hold fast to the cliches of our forebears. We subject all facts to a prefabricated set of interpretations. We enjoy the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.
