I tried knitting while I'm doing a light jog on the rebounder and it works! I'm just doing dishcloths, so if I drop a stitch it's no big deal to retriev. I don't think I'll try anything more complicated or heavier. It needs to be easy.

I know I burn more calories chasing my toddler when he takes off with the skein of yarn I'm currently using, or one of the dpn.

Hi,
I've been a member for a week and have lost 4+ lbs. I crochet while I am riding my recumbent bike. So I guess crocheting burns more calories than knitting??

Too funny.

Course I have a real problem eating while knitting....so that has to count! I don't eat as much, plus burn either 40 or 100 calories...woohoo...

I love the idea of telling my DH that I have to go excercise and then whip out my knitting project. emoticon

Teeth knitting has got to burn more calories than hand knitting. Though probably tough on your enamel.

Hey if Carrie Bradshaw can count shopping as cardio, I guess we can count knitting.
And I do most of my knitting in a rocking chair. More calories!
I'm still trying to figure out how to implement Caitlinator's suggestion. The only way I can figure to use the rowing machine and knit is to learn to knit with my teeth. That sounds even harder than purling continental! ROTFL

Well I don't know whether you can count the calories from knitting as cardio but we could certainly count the laughing as strenghthening our abs? couldn't we?

Haha, what we need to do is bring our projects onto the stationary bike or something. Now THAT would be a knitting circle I'd love to join!

Shirley - Just returned to SP with renewed determination and found this team. Super! I just finished a gye-nor-mous (at least it seemed that way) Stonington shawl out of yarn from a recycled Shetland sweater. Finished the lace border with 32 - COUNT 'EM, THIRTY TWO! - inches of yarn leftover. I swear, I think I held my breath for the last two hours of knitting. Want me to hold my breath for you? I will, if you think it'll help.

Hi All, I'm new and already enjoying your chat.

Can't imagine that you all don't at least burn plenty of calories while stretching. Don't you have yarn hidden under the bed or high up in your closets like I do. And what about crawling under the recliner while searching for that dropped dpn. And doesn't your heart rate soar when you have that panic attack after spotting a glaring mistake right in the middle of your lace masterpiece.
So knit more....but sit on the floor and stretch.

I yam what I yam...(Popeye)

It would be fantastic if knitting counted as cardio.

...What if you get up to storm around the room raving because you dropped a stitch again? Would that count?

It's good to know that knitting burns at least some calories. Sometimes if I have a deadline to finish something I will knit for many hours at a time.

in the Sparks fitness plan, they count sitting & fishing as burning 144 calories per hour. Go figure!

Based on that, then 1 hour knitting, including get up every 15 minutes, should count as at least 75 - 100 cal p/h.

I don't speed knit though emoticon

What about large knits? You know, when every 15 minutes you have to get up and readjust to project. You might get closer to 50 calories an hour on something like that.
I once knitted a 13 foot scarf, and I know I put more effort into rearranging the thing than into actually knitting it!

Sounds right to me, you'd have to be speed knitting 50 mph to burn 102 calories per hour.

You burn calories knitting, but it's not a cardio activity. You're not getting your heartrate up. So, sorry, it still doesn't count towards cardio. :)
