Hi everyone! I'm back on sparkpeople after a 2 year hiatus. It's much needed as I've gained about 12 pounds in the last few months. I'm so excited that it's finally cooling down and we can get out side to Exercise again. Just wondering if anyone on here has ever done the Grand Canyon Rim to Rim hike. I signed up to do it in October and I'm looking for advice on what to pack for food/snacks!

THANK YOU for my Spark Goodie. That was soooo thoughtful of you.

One again, I was away for a few days; it's difficult to type from my iPad.

I am not a big bird fan, however, since I've moved out to the South West, I have learned to appreciate them more and love watching them, especially the hummingbirds. I think what you do for them is wonderful.

I was in Phoenix over the week-end, how you could be outside sawing a tree is remarkable. Kudos to You. The heat is so unbearable that I cannot even take a walk. I'm back in Prescott now, where the temps are in the 90's.

I know you said you had a sweet tooth. Have you tried Carcinia Cambogia Extract? It's supposed to curb your sweet tooth. It has done nothing for me, but some people claim it works.

Personally, I am done with the pills, gimmicks and all the weight loss promises that are false.
I just have to learn to control my portions, and not wait till I'm too hungry to eat cause that turns into a disaster for me. And of course, I keep working out with Coach Nicole and Leslie Sansone.

Thank you again for the Goodie.

Happy Trails,

Claudine

Hope everyone had a healthy weekend. What did you do for fitness? I spent more time cutting the tree into pieces. Whew! Too hot to be sawing and stacking! At this pace, it will take me another month to wrestle this thing into submission.

While I rested, i stayed very still and soon all the different types of birds that feed from the hummingbird sugar I put out came to fill up. I love that I can be so close.

I'm sending a $500 team goodie to Claud1313 for her regular participation on this thread. Next person who posts in this thread gets a $500 goodie, too!

The tree has been sawed and stacked. Whats left looks pretty stupid. The mama bird is still going strong Yay! I want her to hurry it up, though. I've got stuff to do.

Before the web, I was a confirmed Covey person! I used all of his calendaring tools and tried very hard to stick to his goal setting process - it's so hard in a busy life.

This last storm split one of my palo verde trees in half. The past two days I've spent cutting up the portion of the tree that stayed in our yard. The top of the tree is leaning on the brick fence into the neighbor's yard. I'm using hand saws as the half of the tree remaining has a birds nest and I'm trying not to stress out Mama. Today, I am tackling the part of the tree that fell into the neighbors yard. Getting plenty of exercise!

Thanks Claire, I look forward to reading it.

I get hit with wheat cravings at times, I try to only eat what I consider to be good bread and though I try to stay away from starchy products, I'll get a craving for pasta.

I love Macaroni Grill for their pasta dishes.

Here's an article "10 Eating Habits of the Highly Successful and Fit" from Women's Health Magazine - although the points made apply to men as well.

I really don't get cravings for anything other than sugar. Never have. I'm naturally not very fond of the dry wheat based things so I don't miss pizza, bread, sandwiches, crackers, That whole grouping seems very addictive for many people in the way sugar is for me, so I'm fortunate I don't get with a double whammy!

That's very interesting. I didn't know that it was a habit of a successful life style. The way you put it makes a lot of sense. I gather you don't get cravings (other than sugar) and/or if you do, you can easily dismiss them since you've already planned out your morning and afternoon meals.

I don't care to cook, I do it out of necessity and I like my food as natural as possible, without a lot of preservatives and other chemicals that I can't pronounce.

I pretty much eat the same things all the time, fish, chicken, eggs and lots and lots of veggies. My problem is I ingest large quantities in one sitting. I have to force myself to use a small plate. My other downfall is wine, I love wine. I've been good about staying away from it before I went to France and since I've been back.

Also, You are so totally on target about getting emotional satisfaction from other sources rather than food.

Other than the sugar, you sure do sound like you are on the right road to a healthy lifestyle.

Claudine

By the way, great thunderstorm up here in Prescott.

Eating the same breakfast and lunch is one of the common habits of successful life style changers and maintainers. I think it works because it changes the way one thinks about food. It's not about being or not being bored about what I eat. I need to eat because I need the fuel. I don't have to think about food all day because it is already set - just like the drive time to work is set and the need to go to the bank or get gas. Eating becomes another task on the list of things to do.

Because I don't get all tied up in what food combo will excite my taste buds for most of the day I'm compelled to seek my pleasures from other parts of my life. And overall that is more emotionally satisfying. Also, I appreciate dinner a lot more because it is the only variety in the day. I cook from recipes so I don't cycle through the same meals very often and that allows me to savor that meal.

However, the bane of my existence is sugar with which I am sabotaging all the gain I make.

Claire,

Sounds like you are very organized. It's a great system.

How do you now get bored with the same breakfast and lunch every day?

I can't believe that if you have a 'real' desert once in a while, that it sabotages your good intentions. Well, I do believe it, cause the same thing happens to me. But isn't sad that if we indulge a little, it slows our weight loss efforts. I find that very frustrating.

I just came back from Europe, where most people are thin, they don't obsess over weight loss like we do. They eat 'normal' portion sizes and they walk alot. I ate like they did while I was there, but when I'm in the US, I have trouble keeping my portions small :-(

When I used a paper version I was using cookbooks and magazines to get my recipes, so I had the days of the week running down the left side then next to it I would put, for example "Ckn BC 280" meaning a chicken recipe in my Betty Crocker cookbook on page 280.

I eat the same breakfast and lunch every day so I don't have to plan those. It also means I know exactly how many veggies/fruit/protein portions I need at dinner. I don't spend any time counting calories either. I know how many are in my other 2 meals and so dinner has to be around XX and most recipes give us an idea what its calorie count is.

I do all this really well! And then sabotage myself by eating dessert or a soda.......

There isn't a feature that allows us to create our own meal plan within SP. I have a whole list of foods I can't eat, too, so their's is useless for me, too. I use BigOven.com for that because they have a great meal planning tool and access to all kinds of recipes from their site and also other recipes can be imported from several sites. Unfortunately, SP isn't one of them yet (but I've been begging!). However, their interface makes it very easy to copy/paste.

To log them here, I do each ingredient for recipes I don't use often. I have several favorites, so I've been thinking of adding them here so I don't have to do individual ingredients.

However, I started out with a paper planner and that worked great for years.

Welcome back, Claudine!

Sorry I don't know how to do meal plans but I hope you get an answer, it would be good for all of us to know.

I was away in Europe for almost a month so I missed a lot of posts.

Saw Claire's e-mail regarding the new points system. Not sure I want to do it since there is no turning back but I'm curious to how it's working out for all of you. If you all like it, maybe I'll try it.

Hope everyone is enjoying the Summer.

Happy Trails,

Claudine

Does anyone know how to create your own meal plan. The selections in that "area" are so limited and I'm tired of going back and forth from "search" to "favorites" because NONE of the selections they have fit my allergy needs? emoticon

The weather is really something. The other day, during the dust storm, I looked out my window. Due south of me is a mountain a mile and a half away. I couldn't see it - not even a bare outline of it. We are becoming the Saharan Sonoran Desert.

I drove home yesterday from San Diego; 6 straight hours at 117! My car is 9 years old (wow, where does time go when it's flying by?) with a putt putt engine so I kept the air off as much as I could without opening the windows.

(After 45 MPH, open windows suck gas mileage cuz the aerodynamics are all screwed up. Another piece of trivia for you...)

I was soaked and wrung out by the time I got home. No umph to jump on the treadmill, so it was only a thousand step day.

Oh, and I got a ticket for 85 in a 70 zone. Oops.

It's definitely summer weather in the valley. I noticed my plants were looking sad and realized I'd forgotten to increase the water volume on my drippers. They will perk up In a couple days (I hope.

Hi Everyone,

Just trying to keep in touch. How is Sparks working for all of you? I took a mile walk outdoors this morning. Didn't plan on doing that much but it just happened.

The mornings have been so mild up here in Prescott, I walked almost every morning this past week. I huff and I puff, lots of hills here but I get through it and feel good after it's done. Once I get started, I'm okay but not being an exerciser, I really have to push myself to get it done.

What do you all do for activities and do you use the nutrition tracker on the Sparks page. Would love to connect and read how you are all doing?

Happy Trails,

Claudine

Hi,

I tried the 'remedy' from Claire for getting my Coach Nicole DVD to work. However, it only worked for a little while so I will give it another dose. I appreciate the tips that you sent, Claire.

I received the Spark Solution book, I started reading the introduction; I'm hoping it motivates me a little more to stick to the plan. Time will tell. I lack consistency.

Have a Great Day Everyone.

Happy Trails,

Hi Claire,

Hope you had a nice Mother's Day Week-end. Mine was pretty quiet, had one of my sons and his family here. We went on a short hike, got take-out instead of eating out. Preferred to take a rain check on the eating out. LOL

I was away in Phoenix for a few days prior to the week-end, helping my kids out with things. Today, I get to catch up on e-mails and stuff around the house.

Tonight and tomorrow night I go line dancing.

Hope you are enjoying California. We are from New York, started visiting CA a little. Loved San Francisco and San Diego, etc. Can't wait to go back and see more of the state. It's beautiful there.

At least your getting your exercise, you must be feeling good about that, reduces the guilt of the chocolate cake, right?

Have a Great Day,

Claudine

Happy Mother's Day to all the women AND men who have mothered their children well.

I'm in Carlsbad CA with my DH and his son the the week. We always have such good intentions to get out and do things, but end up sitting on our buns most of the time. He develops a head ache or his (DH) feet hurt or whatever - always something. I was okay with that for years, but now that's just not good enough. So I'm ending up in the fitness center tread milling. (With my memory problems, it's not a good idea for me to walk in unfamiliar neighborhoods.)

We went to Claim Jumper for dinner and they brought home a slab of their to die for motherload Chocolate cake. 6 decadent layers. I am not able to resist that type of temptation. It was delicious!

What did you do today?

Hi Claire,

Thanks for the DVD cleaning tips, I'm going to try them (all of them if necessary - LOL)

I pre-ordered one of the new Spark books, because the ad said it will give include $45 worth of free stuff with an early order. I don't think the book is available till May 8.

Have you tried any of the Sparks Coaches? If so, what do you think of them.... When I first joined, I apparently had a free coach trial but the whole web site was so overwhelming and confusing, that I never got to use it. Also going away alot didn't always give me the chance to stay on top of these things. Now, when I'm away, I try and log on from my iPad.

I did a hike yesterday in Sedona and did almost 12,000 steps. Do you have the Fitbit? I have the Fitbit, which syncs with my computer. The fitness part of my tracker keeps track of the steps I do. That's a pretty cool feature. Then every week (or whenever) I get an e-mail telling me what days I took the most and least steps, calories, etc.

Ooops, if you have one, then you don't need me to tell you what it does - Duh -LOL!

I have not been losing weight, but I try and keep up with exercising. I love to line dance. I do walk at home videos with Leslie Sansone and go hiking in nice weather. I don't feel like I overeat but since I don't lose weight, I must be. My metabolism, if I have one, is in 'STOP' mode. Since I'm older, I blame it on age. And/Or cause I live in Prescott, I blame it on altitude. LOL!!!

Have a great day.

I'm sorry - I was really really grumpy yesterday and I took it out on you. I too often don't stop to re-read and imagine how it sounds from the other side of the conversation. I'm just so frustrated and my fingers start flying and before I can blink that darn SEND button pops up and smacks into my fingers...

I didn't even know we could actually buy physical stuff with our SparkPoints. I thought they were only used for giving out goodies. If I can buy stuff, I'm gonna run over to the store! I have thousands of them.

Sometimes the DVDs don't run because gunk is still on it from the manufacturing process. Here's a link to 4 different ways to clean one. Maybe you'll be one of the lucky ones and this'll do the trick!

Hi Claire,

Absolutely no sarcasm was intended. After I sent my post, I realized the Team Leaders names are up there. I am on the Fit and Fabulous 60's. We have a lot of dialogue going on there.

I will be happy to post here more often, and if we start something maybe others who are just 'viewing' will jump in. I think that does happen on a number of teams.

I do and don't get to Phoenix very often. It's usually to baby-sit and not for much leisure time. But I do like to be kept posted on activities in case I can make it.

I collect SP points also but haven't been able to cash them in. Everything I would order through Spark costs me much more due to shipping costs than through Amazon.

Also, one of the Coach Nicole DVD's (ordered through Amazon) does not work but since the expiration date for returns has passed, I don't know if they will honor it.

If anyone out there has any suggestions or advice, please let me know.

Hope we can all motivate one another, including if one of us is down, another one can boost us back up.

Read you later,

Claudine

Um, yes. Me. You can see leader names at your screens upper right column. I'm presuming you didn't have sarcasm in mind, but just in case:

I'm interested in any suggestions you might have to improve the team participation. Both Sunshine_gal and i have flat foreheads from beating them against that wall. She is no longer active at all.

I started out thinking we could become more valuable to our SP AZ community by creating events for us to meet each other - to find someone in our neighborhood to hook up with. Recently, the SparkPhoenix team has taken on that task as well. We consistently get a very small group even at potlucks that don't require any specific fitness level. The same people are always at the top of the team leaderboards, so the opportunity to give new folks High Fives is limited. For as large as this group seems to be with thousands of members, we don't even have enough people who blog to fill the Team Stream for one rotation (in the right hand column). I *think* most of the folks who Huddle are big SparkPoint collectors and are stopping by for the few seconds it takes to huddle. Heck, we don't even know how many people are lurking vs how many have turned off team notifications completely. The challenges are essentially inactive - no one participates.

I see you are very active in your other teams - any ideas you might suggest? Frankly, I'm all out. Wanna help get the team off the ground?

Hi All,
I always forget to check in... Here in Prescott, we've had some ugly weather! Thank Goodness it doesn't usually last long, I'm looking forward to some warmer temperatures.

Still struggling to lose weight. Eating right and exercising. My metabolism is shot, I have to keep trying to raise it.

Hope to read yours posts soon.

I just realized there are a couple other people from the Surprise area that have just introduced themselves in this thread:

I'm encouraging them to make a "Find a Buddy" entry, too.

Be sure to look through and create an entry for yourself in the "Find am Exercise/Spark Buddy" forum. I see one entry from Surprise. I'm not familiar with that part of town, so there may be others listed via crossroads that I don't recognize.

Happy New Year!

Anyone from Sun City, Sun City West, or Sun City Grand? Surprise? Would love to find a walking buddy that can keep me up and motivated. Someone kind of slow because I have bad knees (Duh, my weight?) I walk slow about a 30 min. mile.

Have you taken a look at our "Find an exercise buddy" forum? You should be able to see if someone is from your area pretty easily. Be sure to create your own entry so others can find you, too!

To get to the forum, click the SparkArizona team link above to get back to our main page and you'll see it about mid page.

Hi! sorry I've been quiet for awhile. Just so much going on - but mostly, I'm not doing any of the right things. I now weigh more than I ever have, so who am I to give advice or motivation?

I have been struggling with my sugar addiction for over a year and now it's escalated to bingeing and hiding the treats, which I have never ever done before.

I'm loving our cool weather and I'm working hard to built the "I give a hoot" attitude so I get myself out there for a walk!

I don't know about the rest of you, but this weather right now is soooo glorious it makes it easy to go outside and be active. I guess there's a cold snap coming, but we'll manage.

I hope everyone is having a great day... I'm looking forward to a three day weekend... Saturday we'll run to Tucson and hike through the Desert Museum or Tohono Chul... I love being a tourist close to home.

I know how that is. Before we moved here, we lived an hour outside of Las Vegas (ever hear of Pahrump???) and there were no indoor pools there. Only the city pool in the summer, which was always packed with kids. I have just loved having access to the pool.....both pools in the summer.....on the Army base here. I don't think I would have been successful with losing weight--even with the lap band--without the pool to work out in.

Don't have time for much chat, got to get ready for church soon. This week DD13 and I fly to Nevada to visit family for her birthday on the 12th. DH needs the car here, he doesn't get the week off like DD does (Fall Break) so he has to stay and go to class. Someone needs to take care of all our critters, too. We're up to 4 cats and 3 dogs......although one cat is a temporary one......hopefully!

Have a good week!
Lori

Thanks for the welcome. Actually joined SP in 2007 but never used the site. Was on Ediets and moderated the 60s+ forum there and belonged to a challenge team as well. Ediets has closed down their community boards temporarily (so they say) so our whole challenge team moved here and set up a private spark team.

Like to post on several boards at once to keep things interesting, so here I am. Lori, I went to water aerobic classes for almost 2 years before and after my knee replacement and it was great exercise. The only problem for me is that the "Y" is 40 miles away in Prescott (I live in a remote area between Wickenburg and Prescott) and the neighbor who took turns driving with me decided she didn't want to go any longer. It's too expensive to drive the distance every day, and rough in the winter because we get snow and so does Prescott. So I had to give it up...

Looking forward to getting acquainted with the others here.

Pat

emoticon to the new team members!! Doesn't look like much discussion here lately....I'm down in SE AZ, and we love it here.

I swim for my exercise, and so I don't worry about the heat or lack thereof. After I get my knee replaced, I hope to be able to walk and hike and possibly even......run! If I remember how! It's been too many years since I did run......well, except for the time that a flight for life helicopter was about to land right where I was standing. THEN I ran!!! Made my heart pump pretty fast there....

Have a great Monday, and happy October!!!

Good morning fellow Arizonans,
Can I join your group? Almost an AZ native, lived in Phx from 12/56 to 04/02 when we retired and moved to Peeples Valley, AZ in the NW mountains. All my children, four adult grandchildren and all 6 of the great-grands are natives. One son, two grands and all the "greats" live in the east valley.

I think overall, Spring is my favorite season, but I love living here where we actually have 4 seasons. The change is nice.....after living in Southern Nevada for 20+ years where there is only 2 seasons (green and dead), I have really been happy here. Now, living in a house in an established neighborhood with lots of trees and bushes for the birds, I love sitting and listening to them. A great way to de-stress myself! Almost--but not quite--as good as sitting and watching the ocean. I grew up in the Pacific Northwest, so the ocean is in my blood, no matter if I've half turned into a desert rat!!

Enjoy your day!
