Licenses are good for one year - www.zumba.com/faq/#workshops

From that page - "HOW LONG IS A ZUMBA® CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION (LICENSE) VALID FOR?

A Zumba® certificate of completion (license) is valid for one year. As with any reputable occupation, a professional is expected to keep up-to-date on industry knowledge and stay fresh with their industry skills. Zumba Fitness wants its instructors to be the best in the industry and maintain a high level of expertise and proficiency. To help instructors attain and maintain this status, Zumba Fitness provides numerous opportunities for continuing education and requires all Zumba Instructors to update their skills annually in order to renew their instructor certificate."

-----
From the above, if you don't join ZIN within 12 months of getting your license, you'll have to re-take B1 or Jump Start Gold to regain it. I got an email reminder at the 9 month mark to tell me to join ZIN or do another B1, so I'm pretty sure there's no 6 month window.

But I think we were told in 2012 training that you must be a ZIN member for at least 6 months of the year. So if you were to take a break from teaching, stop teaching or whatever reason, you'll still need to pay for 6 months of ZIN of that year, even if you're not 'using' it?

Maybe someone who has taking training this year can chime in and clarify.

You have up to 6 months after your license to join ZIN otherwise you will have to renew your license after 1 year (I believe). You can join ZIN anytime from when you get your license to 6 months after. Once you join ZIN there are a lot of benefits including free marketing material, a website, DVD's with choreography (every other month) and CD's every month. You also get to attend ZIN Jams (for $) and the Convention (again for $) as well as get a discount on clothing, the ability to join the affiliate program and make some $ from selling Zumba clothing, and access to additional online training and to other Zumba licensing.

Here's a link to the site www.zumba.com/pages/whatiszin .

Hi! If I recall correctly, the B1 training included basic steps for salsa, merengue, reggaeton and cumbia, as well as workshops on the basics of breaking down a song for choreo, marketing tips and learning the difference between certification and licensure (we receive a "license," not a "certification"). You'll learn choreo for the 4 basic genres listed above and learn the differences between them. There's a section where you divide into groups and work together to choreo a specific 8-16 counts of a song.

I took my lunch and made sure I had tons of protein and complex carbs. I signed up for ZIN on the training day and don't recall the time limit for signing up.

Best wishes for your training!

Zumba training for me is coming up in just under a month, and I am wondering what the typical training day for Basic will entail? Should I bring my lunch, etc.? Also, I have read up on ZIN but I wanted to ask when you need to sign up by, the day of certification? Up to six months after certification is what someone told me (in order to avoid having to retake basic training after your certification expires initially). Any thoughts would be great, and thank you!

Congratulations on the B1 training! I had so much fun at mine and hope that you did, too.

I had a position lined up before I went to B1. I was taking a Zumba class at a small facility near my home, and the instructor/gym owner encouraged me to get licensed. Once I did, I started subbing for her and teaching my own class. I'm in a very saturated area (there are TONS of licensed instructors in Atlanta), so I've heard that it can be difficult to find a place to teach. I haven't had a difficult time, though. I got my second and third gigs from facilities searching on ZIN or Google. I would encourage you to make a personalized webpage and talk to every gym and fitness facility you can. Don't forget to contact the heads of the fitness facilities at local colleges. Also, I have a few friends who teach at private companies that have their own facilities. Talk to friends who work for companies to find out if they have their own fitness facilities. If so, contact the facility head and see what you need to do to get in there. And, finally, the more people you can get in front of, the better. Don't be afraid to volunteer for a set at a Zumbathon--you get exposure to a crowd in your area and you can donate your time to a good cause.

I think it's a benefit to be a male instructor. I know quite a few, and they are very popular.

Congrats! I personally know of 4 male instructors! I love to work with them because I don't compare myself to them as much as I do to female instructors. The ZIN and Facebook are great ways to network with other instructors in your area. I got my B1 license in October and am still working on learning routines. I think the fastest way to meet a large amount of people are Masterclasses, Jams and Zumbathons. Also, gyms aren't the only place you could teach classes, but they are a great because the clients are automatically exposed to Zumba, just by walking in the door. Good luck and be sure to come back and keep us updated on how things are going.

My Zumba B1 Training is this coming Saturday. For some reason Zumba has become one of my new hobbies. This means that Im gonna have to take a break from playing soccer .

After many thoughts of deciding whether I should become a Zumba instructor, I finally decided that I should become one and that I want to motivate others to achieve their goals through dancing and to feel it like its party for everyone.

I don't see a lot of guys who do Zumba or even teach Zumba. I'm kinda little nervous but at the same time excited to be part of Zumba family. I don't really exactly know what to expect but all I know is that I can bring a new and fresh choreography and play all kinds of music from Latin, Old school, 80's, Pop, Hip Hop, Hard and soft rock and alternatives.

From your experience, what did you have to do after the B1 training before you started teaching? How did you network yourself? How did you outreach for gyms that maybe interested of having more Zumba classes? Thank you for thoughts.

How expensive is it to become a ZIN member?

Oh My Goodness....Ricardo was AMAZING!!! I signed up for ZIN cause I figured why not. You don't have to relicense every year, you get updates on music and choreo, discounts on a multitude of stuff including conference. I went for it and dove in! I am managing a gym right now so that is where I will be teaching.

thank you for your help! I am happy to be a part of the Zumba family!

What I like about Zumba though once you sign up to be a Zin member you do not need to take another training to keep your license so it is worth the investment plus the music and DVD's the send as resources to help with your choreography. You cannot get everything from YouTube because some of the instructors are not that great on YouTube I have found and some are not even so called Zumba instructors just fitness instructors so you have to be careful they just know some Zumba routines. Now if you want to learn another Zumba Specialty then you do need to take another training but it depends on what you want to do with it. It is up to the individual. Happy Zumba

You will find that they offer you some special deals for signing up that day...you might get some extra CD's of music or extra DVD's.

The music they send is good, but I get a lot of my routines right off You Tube!

I was able to get the local community building in my town for free.I work full time as a librarian aide at a school and offer classes 3 nights a week for the people in my town. I have a blast!! I just love Zumba!

Thank you to EVERYONE who has posted in this thread. Just on a whim I googled Zumba Instructor Training to see what people have to say and by reading this thread I am SO much more excited (albeit still pretty nervous) to go get my training February 2 in Vancouver with Ricardo!!! :)

Glad to hear that I do not HAVE to sign up for ZIN right away and that I can sign up later on within the year and not have to do another training to keep my license.

All of your tips are noted :)

I read in one of the posts, someone was asking about a fitness resume without much fitness experience but I didn't see a reply. Does anyone have any information on how to create such a resume or how did you all start being an instructor in gyms? Do you rent your own facilities or work for studios?

Also, I am wondering how many of you are members of the fitness associations as well?

Thank you so very much!!! I am much too excited!!!

I've never had to come up with my own routines in 2 years of being licensed. Join ZIN and every other month you get a DVD and CD with 2 different choreography. As a ZIN you can attend Jams (my favorite way to get choreo) that comes from the Megs Mixes you get on the months without a DVD. There is also some good choreo out on YouTube that I've found and done.

I'm now to the point where I can't keep up with the stuff I get so I gave tons of choreo at my disposable.

Don't let that deter you from getting your license!!

I've been wanting to get my B1 training, but I'm a little nervous about coming up with my own routines. I love to Zumba and think having my own class would be lots of fun, just not sure I'm ready. Anyone else have this concern when they went for their B1?

So Jan 19th. Bring it on. lol

Go for it! As long as you stay for the whole time and do your best, you will get your license. The class is a lot of fun and you will be worn out afterwards but having that license is awesome.

I got mine the first week of October and I am now teaching a class 2 days a week in my town. I love it!! I started doing Zumba in February of 2012. I have lost 20 pounds!!

BRONNYPIGZ, the instructor training is super easy, especially if you have taken Zumba classes before and are familiar with the steps. At my training there was a lady who had taken only a few Zumba classes, ever, and she couldn't follow most of what was going on, but she got her license anyway.

There is no way to fail, so just don't worry about it!

Is the training easy? There is one coming up here on the 19th of jan. but I have a massive fear of failure. Comes from years of being over weight and not being good enough.

But I have toyed with the idea of becoming a zin all year and jan 19th looks like my best bet!

That's what my instructor said last night, that it might just take however long for her to enter it in. I just want to see exactly what the ZIN is all about (and how much of a discount I get!). :)

Oh, and I didn't really mention the training itself.. it was AMAZING! I'm not sure what I was so worried about, I did fine! I had no problems keeping up even though I was still feeling under the weather, and was one of only about 4 who went to the Master Class afterward. I was sore the next day for sure, but not at all on that day; I still had energy to keep going, it was over too soon! Kass Martin is a rock star-- and I was more than a little envious to see that even covered in sweat she just glistened in a sexy way, lol!

Thanks! My instructor said the same thing so I decided to hold off.. although I DID wind up buying one top, a burnout tee that says Instructor on the back. I just wanted something to wear to show off in, since we had the Master Class an hour AFTER training. Talk about a killer day!

I also signed up for ZIN, not sure how long I'll keep it up but I wanted to get the packet with the extra dvds/cds.

I do have another question though; how long does it take for you to be recognized as an instructor on the Zumba site? It still says that I have not yet completed training, I'm guessing it'll take a few days to update into the system?

They're very expensive there (the only two good things about buying there is a. you can try them on and b. no shipping cost). Your best bet is to wait until after you become a ZIN member and buy online at ZIN prices.

Also, I found http://www.zumbafashion.com/ to be reasonable!

I got the email! Somehow that is what made it feel more "real" to me, lol.

She mentioned selling Zumbawear afterward, and I was curious if it will be at the regular price or on sale for us. I've wanted to get some but it's so expensive, especially when I usually just buy exercise tanks at Walmart for like $5.

Hi everyone!

I don't know if I should have created a new topic for this, but since this is the instructor thread, and my question has to do with instructors starting out.... I might as well ask here lol. I just got B1 licensed in September! Yay! But what do you put on a resume for beginner instructors? Since we're starting out, we can't really put a whole lot of stuff.... And when I tried to Google examples, I came across resumes that did have a lot of experience on them. Any thoughts?

Thanks Caribqueen (and CONGRATS!) and Shellsbrood! During class last night the instructor had me come up on stage and help lead a Cumbia routine (she didn't even know I was taking the training!), and then afterward I talked to her about it. She mentioned how some people do the training without even having taken a live class. My fears are eased a little bit, even though I am still sick and wasn't able to push myself as hard. I guess part of it is that I don't want to NOT give it 110% in front of Kass Martin, lol!

In our training, we had someone who had never even taken a Zumba class before. I think the best preparation would be getting enough sleep the night before and eating a good breakfast in the morning.

Don't worry too much about it. Relax and enjoy yourself. You'll have a blast! (I did!)

Hi!! I am a new ZIN since last Thursday!!! 10/11/12!!!! Tony Witt and Vanessa Lupercio were AMAZING!!!!! It was a long day that went fast. Starts with an awesome master class! I was DRENCHED after. Take a change of clothes, a hoodie, water, healthy snacks, and a sack lunch. Credit/debit card if you want to join ZIN. I did! Get a goooood nights sleep. You will be TIRED at the end. I could not sleep that night as I was so excited! Enjoy and keep me posted!
ZUMBA LOVE!

My training is in less than two weeks and I'm getting really nervous! I've been really sick for the past two months and have only been able to exercise once a week (my usual Zumba class). I have little stamina and endurance, and am worried I won't be able to keep up. I'm going to a new class tonight with a really high-energy instructor, I want to push myself as much as I can (without risking injury of course). Any suggestions on how to prepare for the training, or words of advice?

Thank you...and here's what's cool. When my Instructor found out about it, she said she would try to actually be there with me (took her training & is friends with Erick). How's that for support??? :) I'm totally pysched and nervous all at once!

:)

Rumor is that she has resigned as a presenter however she will remain a ZIN. I am sooooo sad about this. :-(

That sucks for you ladies who had trainings scheduled with Tanya. :( Even if they're not cancelled, I know I would have been looking forward to it being taught by her. That's cool if they're replacing them with another Master Instructor though!

I talked it over with my instructor, and we might take a road trip to a training at the beginning of November to MI with another girl in my class who wants to get certified. My instructor also has a ballroom showcase that weekend so we'd get to watch that as well. Seems like this is all going to turn out for the better! :)
