Yep--me too bray. So--how do we 'be happy'--or get a life that makes us happy? thats the million dollar question right?? and how do we stop using the food, in the process....it sounds so simple--just 'be happy' how ridiculous!! to even say that--if someone said that to me I would want to punch them in the face..but..the point is perhaps, we have to design our lives so that we can find joy. Thats for sure.

Hey Team--take a look at DR, GOULD's BLOG..forum. I posted Feb. 26 blog.
Take a look at point number 5. He says you have to be happy to lose weight, not lose weight to be happy--thoughts on that?

Hiya Brayshome!! Glad you stopped by--Shrink Yourself is an emotional eating program by a Dr. Goold...check out his online site 'SHRINK YOURSELF . com"
I have been an emotional eater for years, and am finally getting a handle on it--after doing his program almost 2 years ago.
We would be happy to have you hear to discuss anything that is emotionally related to food. :)

Just wanted to stop by and say hi again. I'm about 2 weeks from finishing another [emo eating] book and I'm going to re-start Shrink Yourself. So meet me here in a couple of weeks b/c I'm sure I'll be waxing all philosophical about one thing or other! I'll be back, I promise!

What am I willing to do today to make myself healthy?

Lots of fresh veggies--Yukon Gold potatoes, broccoli, mushrooms, peppers, onions, lemons, bananas, pineapple, avocado, cucumbers, tomatoes, carrots, more mushrooms, frozen green beans, peas

skim milk, fat free sour cream, yogurt, low fat cottage cheese, feta, turkey sausage, cod, frozen chicken, ground turkey, black beans, flour and corn tortillas, minute brown rice, chili mix, Welch's 100% grape juice, Eggos, almonds, light coconut milk, unsweetened coconut, english muffins, Arnold's sandwich pockets, Flat Out (for pizza), spaghetti sauce, spices, a few canned veggies, and ahem...Nutella, which of course is for my daughter! (as a rare and occasional treat I'll toast an eggo and put a Tbsp of Nutella and slice half a banana)

Hey Jodie
I wont offer platitudes about your current state of mind. You feel that way, and thats fair enough. The girls are , as Tiffany said in her blog this morning " looking for cracks". They need reassuring perhaps that you are going to be there through the hard times, and that everything is going to be alright without the food.
And you are already experiencing weight loss...and if your goal is to be 'goal weight' in a slow, lengthy but enlightening and realistic journey--then its to be expected that you will move through the process slowly. It will all work.

Hi guys, I keep forgetting to check in.

Tiffany - For what it's worth, I used to work out in the morning before work but have had to change it to the evening for a couple of reasons - if I work out a couple hours before bed it helps me sleep (and I constantly struggle with sleeping) and I just got too hungry during the day if I did my work out in the morning. So I think it makes total sense that if you're exercising more you're hungrier. I did find that after a week or two of working out in the am, my hunger leveled off and I was no longer hungrier than usual.

As for me, I'm doing okay with food but my head isn't doing well. I feel kind of bummed about the food plan, into the magical thinking, convinced that no matter what I do there is little hope of getting past emotional eating and into weight loss. I know, makes no sense but there it is.

Isnt it great that you are making these body changes, that fit and streamline into health and vibrant living? How wonderful!! I guess thats why exercise alone wont necessarily promote weight loss--because we DO get hungrier and if people eat the wrong things--weight loss is not a bi-product anymore.

I hear and agree with what you're saying. However, this is different. Like my metabolism ramped up. I'm not eating any less than the past 2 months, just suddenly hungrier.

Tiffany--I think part of that might be that since you are not constantly eating, or snacking or nibbling on stuff--a bite here and a bite there, you are allowing your stomach to empty and hence you feel hungry. Makes perfect sense! One of the SY exercises at the beginning was actually to let ourselves GET hungry, so that we learn to know what TRUE hunger feels like.
You feeling hungry is a good thing--means you arent deadening it as soon as you feel a twinge...:)

True--I hope you feel better and this thing blows over. All I can say is that I'm Hungry, which is unusual for me. I want to believe it's because I am exercising more. I am also having difficulty adjusting to higher calorie ranges-what to eat that isn't "empty calories". I will figure it out, just surprised that I'm hungry. Kind of feels good.

So, its Monday,,think I am getting ill. Is it wrong to think that gives me an excuse to not go to the gym? is it wrong to loathe going so much?? Sigh.
How are you guys doing?? Food for me is just that lately--FOOD. Thats a good thing. I thought of going to my maximum calorie thing on the weekend--and was really afraid of that--I dont know if thats a good thing or a bad thing--I dont 'feel" like I am DIET MODE--I am very peaceful and content about the food--not the usual WHITE KNUCKLE of the diet mode--but who the hell knows..this thing has many disguises.

Jodie, I think that as we grow and learn the morphing will follow as we get stronger and we tailor this eating /way of life to suit us for the long haul. I was thinking today about maintenance ( YIKES) and I thought--what i would like is to track, but just track higher calories. Ya know?

Hey all. Hmmmm, things are going well but my food plan is still morphing. It changes a little bit more every week. I don't know yet what I've learned this week or what will change yet. Lots to think about.

Here's to a strong start tomorrow morning!

Jibbie--interesting title for the book--whats it about? Re: eating at night--yeah that used to be a problem of mine too...I solved it by eating fairly late--like at 7ish. That ties me over. That strategy works for me because I dont have a big family to worry about--just my daughter, and she eats way early. Then has fruit in the evening. Works for us. :) Does the reading thing work for you?

Just finished reading "Nectar in a Sieve" and it was a good book. Old classic that I should have read in college but didn't. I'm trying to read at night so I don't EAT which is my hardest problem in the evening.

Thank you Jodie and Laura. My name is Tiffany. I don't know what happened. I was taken by such surprise at my own reaction. And then I felt guilty for not participating on this tea, so I wanted to let you know what was going on at least. I will begin with the journal and fingers. emoticon

Hey Treb. ( whats your real name? if I may ask??) I SOOOO Get what you experienced. Sometimes the comfort of the control of the food is the only sane thing. Sometimes, the locked box of crap that is in our heads needs to stay locked up until we are ready to deal. Dont panic--as JST says--the first step is just recognizing that its there. Everything in manageable chunks and in your own time.
Dr. G suggests that the first step is just AWARENESS..in fact, you feeling how you felt, is actual PROGRESS and absolutely important.
I made the mistake, when I did SY, was to abandon all food plans--in my effort to be free of the "DIET". 2 years later, I realize that the food plan is a big part of the puzzle. NOBODY Is going to take anything away from you.
Just start where you are. Perhaps, when you feel like eating, just write it down--write down the feelings. Write down what you want to eat, and why. Could you do that?

Deep breaths, TBELL. In reality, nothing is any different now than it was before you took the diagnostic except that you have gained some real power - knowledge about yourself. I don't think anyone here will try to tell you how to explore this facet of your eating issue or how quickly you need to do it. Sometimes when things are really scary for me I have to look at it through my fingers - you know, how we used to watch monster movies when we were kids? You don't want to look but you have to look.

Something I think TRUE will agree with is that no matter how you look at the emotional stuff, you do have to have some eating plan in place. You could (entirely up to you) keep your current eating plan in place and then look at the emotional eating issues in teensy and manageable bits.

Those are just my thoughts. Please take what you like and leave the rest and remember - YOU'RE THE BOSS OF YOU!

Hi Folks. Just checking in. I don't have much to say. I know I am an emotional eater. Apparently I freaked myself out a few days ago by going to the SY online site and taking the Emotional Eating Diagnostic. Just taking that diagnostic sent me spiraling into shut down mode. I didn't request the results. Didn't want to know the results. I was fine and not having desires to emotionally eat until I took that diagnostic. So I immediately went into shut down and thought about the A + B = Z formula of my SP plan. That's where I am with this.

I know what you are going to say, TRUEREINVENTED. I can't truly be successful in the long run until I deal with the underlying emotions. That may be true. But I'm not ready to screw up the progress I've made by digging into that pile of ugly yet.

feel badly about a sparkpal--naimatanner...not breaking any confidences here because she posted her blog about it--but she is an emotional eater...I recommended SY, and she read it...and loved it..but didnt feel that it was about her...she had started a plant based whole food diet, and thought that THIS WAS THE ANSWER and her EE was over now...after a lifetime of binging.......yesterday she binged. I have BEEN THERE DONE THAT...and she of course felt awful about this fall from grace--and dissapointed that this 'diet' was perhaps NOT the answer. ( NO DIET IS!!!) ...feel bad for her.
Sigh.
It took me years to get to where I am now--and even now, I know that the dragon is dormant-not gone. Poor kid...she is young...I feel for her.

Hiya
I am having a really good day today--how about the rest of you? The board still seams a little quiet--but I dont like to push people..how many 'motivating emails" can you send? :)
Does anybody have any challenges coming up? Would you like to set a team goal? For example--does anyone want to set a boundary with an energy vampire this week?

Hey Jibbie!! Nice to meet you! Just curious--why would you even come across the book if you were never an emotional eater? Night eating..what do you mean? like that you are sleeping thing, and you get up to eat and dont know it?? I have heard of cases like that.
I agree--Dr. G has lots of important things to say-and I think his program is really good-I know it was the only thing that really got to the core of why I would binge.
What do you mean that 'stress causes you to regain weight?" You mean--you are stressed so you eat, so you gain weight? or the actual STRESS causes weight gain--i have heard of that--the stress hormones cause you to gain belly fat. YIKES!

So glad to see you become the Team Leader. I've belonged to the Team for several years, but I've never been an emotional eater or a binge eater, but just loved Roger Gould, M.D. in the interviews I saw of his about how STRESS causes us to REGAIN the weight. I certainly know I have had the problem with night cravings. So, I've read the book over and over and find him SO helpful.
I am amazed at the number of people who will NOT spend the time to read such a book.

Hey Jodiest--yep--hopeful is a scary place isnt it?? What does Dr. Goold say about self-doubt? do you remember?? Maybe we should look it up--I forget. :) However, I think he would say that the self-doubt layer comes from years of lying to ourselves and years of believing that we are powerless to change. We are NOT powerless. That was then, and this is now, and we can handle this--because we know better. You dont need to be scared about the hope--or scared about the weight loss or scared at all. You got this.
