Is this team active anymore? Just wondering as I recently got the book and have been gaining some wonderful insight and changes inside (as well as losing weight). It would be great to discuss things here! Anyone?

Slow but sure!

Oh, but you know I am so grateful that I ever got to live. I certainly didn't make good choices in my life. Was stupid and married the wrong person at 19 and stayed because of children and what others would say. NOT smart. I got the "Bait and Switch" as Dr. Phil calls it. He told me after we were married that he'd had to "Play the game to get someone" and now he was stopping all that stuff. I certainly didn't look for the "Red Flags" as Dr. Phil calls them.
So, life can be interesting.

:( even binging as i write- how sad is this?

Seem stuck in this pattern of overeating late at night, then feeling so stuffed/sick i can't eat during the day, then binging the next night. Can't stand to look at my body- hate myself and feel a right wreck. Live in UK, but NHS has been no help at all :( death come eat me!

I haven't taken the on-line course, but know of several who have and they thought it was REALLY helpful.
It is easy to get out of control. I regained some of my weight this past year while my DD was pregnant. She gained 30# but got it all off within six weeks of her delivery 4-7. I have to work on it still and am on track today.

Hi Jibbie, I was doing so well with my eating etc and lately, I have been right out of control. I know why, but still that is no excuse. I have been really stressed at work, working long hours etc. I need to stop using food as a coping mechanism. I think I need to re-read Dr Goulds book and maybe also sign up for the online sessions. Anyways, thanks for listening. I hope everyone is doing well.

HEY TEAM;;;THIS POST IS FROM OUR NEWEST MEMBER SHASFAITH...I have redirected it here...

Hi, I have recently read the book and was amazed by the insight as well as what it confirmed I've sensed. I am beginning to view my interactions with food differently....
I AM a thin, curvy girl turned huge after punishing myself/being slave to food for years and have subsequently paid the price being currently overweight by about 120 pounds. I'm in mid thirties & not feeling good about myself on so many levels. What most like about the book is that it addresses the roots of this all. I hope to stay connected here an make progress with you all.
Looking for an increase in self-esteem and personal growth and to uncover the body I was given. May I learn to appreciate food as fuel and learn to treat myself kindly.
Cheers, SY friends

Ok I'm definitely starting over. Starting over trying to stop binge eating, reading the book again from page 1. So...powerlessness. yessiree, that's my biggest prob. The powerlessness.

What am I willing to do today to make myself healthy?

I understand now, that happened to me before, I was bored of all the lettuce and steamed veggies. A friend of mine gave me this food meditation maybe it could be helpful for you:
Choose a food that is small, for example a grape or a raisin,
put it on your palm and observe it, the color, the little wrinkles, the marks, spots etc,
feel it on your hand, the weight, texture and temperature
smell it, try to really focus on how it smells, sweet, sour, sugary, etc
then put it into your mouth, don't chew it but feel it into your mouth. How does it feel? again, be aware of the temperature and texture and flavor,
then chew it, take notice on how the flavor increases, how it changes, be aware of all the flavors in your mouth and the texture.
Masticate carefully paying attention to all the sensations flavors and textures give you

When I did this I learned to appreciate the flavor of simple foods. I started adding less salt, and I ejoy plain food because It does have flavor and is interesting, it is just that is less "in your face" like a chocolate cake. Its like tea, the flavor is more subtle.
I hope this helps
:)

Thank you, TRUEREINVENTED!. I know I wasn't very creative with my new name ;). Easter was OK, I did over eat, but I also had a lot of fun, and came to interesting conclusions. I discovered where my feeling phobia came from. We are a bunch of hapinness-junkies/feeling-phobics in my family!!! and the best part, I loosed weight! I'm going to make a blog a bout it because is very interesting. What about you? how have you been doing?

Hi All!
I posted the new blog--its about co-dependence...oh my god....some of that is SO ME! The blog is under the heading " dr. g's blog, lets discuss".
Lets continue our discussion of the blog there in that forum--
Co-dependence for me--is probably a KEY issue for the eating...more there. :)

Hey Katquel!!! Welcome! I noticed the name change--wanted to know--how did easter weekend go at Moms??
We are a fairly quiet group--but powerful when we trust and open up and have the courage to examine the real reason behind the food.

I'm not really new, I had an account by the name Catquel but I closed it. I feel kind of ashamed for doing that, but I guess it is better to start again than to give up, isnt it?

I'm here. Most people (95%) regain the weight they lose, so Dr. Gould really is the most important person you can know about, since he is all about KEEPING the weight off and avoiding STRESS, which is the reason he says people regain.

yep we DO wobble--and thats normal. I find that once I wobble and fall though, its a lot harder to get back up and stay up. The first few days--especially the first day after, are very hard. However, if view this as an addiction--as some people do--then that makes sense. The 'feel good' chemicals induced by the food were in full swing, and our brain is now crashing--and like the drug addict--it looks to the one thing that gives us that 'high' and thats food! Also, its hard not to feel guilty--and when we feel guilty and feel crappy, whats the one thing we do?? thats right--EAT..so its perfectly logical you are in this state now.
thats a few interpretations at least. For me--Its almost my brain remembers how 'good' it felt to eat with abandon..which at the TIME of the eating is true--but not so much 2 seconds later.
Keep hanging on till you get back in the swing of things--write down how you feel now, how you felt eating--and just move on. In a day or two you will be back to normal.

I think sometimes we wobble. For me, the "magic" is learning from the wobble and not giving up. I think, like everything else, success also has different faces.

I didn't really follow the strategy I had hoped to follow. However, I did eat about half what I ate last time. The food was very tasty. It did give me serious stomach cramps--not an overfill feeling, but a full rebellion by my digestive track. I immediately got back on track ( for the rest of the evening and next day ). However, yesterday I was rebelling again and ate too much of foods I don't typically eat. Emotional eating at its finest. Today I'm back on track again. I feel like a spinning top that is starting to wobble. Frustrating in light of my recent "successes.".

Laura, you're right. I've dealt pretty successfully with the issue of eating certain types of food. Apparently, I haven't mastered the desire to gorge on unlimited selections of food. I have restricted myself from buffets for that reason. I don't have the self control. However, I really like your suggestion from Geneen Roth to limit each plate to a small serving of only 3 items of my choice. Eat what I like, don't eat what I don't like very much. And savor each bite. I don't know if it will work, but it already feels right. It helps cut down on my guilt and my rebellion, but also my panicky need to stuff myself. I don't know why. It doesn't change anything, it's just another way of approaching the situation. We'll see, huh? Thank you for your wise words.

Tiffany--lets examine this--you say you like the taste of food more, and you like GOOD food. Yep--that makes sense doesnt it? because you want weight loss, you are restricting the amount and changing the quality of the food-so now you appreciate food more. Does it increase your susceptibility to binges? it may and may not--if you are restricting your favourite foods--then it might--as you will crave THEM and want THEM and they are still FORBIDDEN and the inner rebel might say I WANT I WANT GIVE ME GIVE ME.
And-if you dont do the emotional work--and address the underlying feelings of self-doubt/rebelliousness/self-worth/pain.
..it doesnt matter how thin we get or how we get there-the fat is destined to come back.
And--honestly--if you are 'looking forward to the food' over the next few days--and looking forward to the abandon of eating--that indicates that perhaps you are restricting and not dealing. You want a break, a chance to get off the control of the diet--a 'time out' from the diet and the structure....perhaps you can examine that?

True--it must feel wonderful to have broken that connection with the "food reward."

I'll tell you the truth. I love to eat tasty food. A variety of food. Maybe the food acts as a stimulant to keep me interested in things. The end of last year, I was starting to notice that a lot of what I ate was garbage--meaning, it didn't even taste good to me anymore. Now, 3 months later, food tastes so much better to me. Is this dangerous? Does it increase my susceptibility to cravings, to binges? I do know I'm really looking forward to food the next couple of days.

Hey all. Dr. G has a blog for this week.It doesnt talk about the emotional eating aspect so much--as some obvious physical things. An example to me, about how managing the food, AND the emotions go hand in hand.
Everything with me is good--really positive feelings.
Today, as an example--I was walking along the corridor enroute to the bathroom and I thought--I need to look after myself tonight--what can I do that would nurture me...and then i thought of a new book, and a nice bath--later it dawned on me 6 months ago, tonight would have been a binge night. Today--I didnt even think of it.
Way cool.
How are you guys doing?

YAYYYYYY! Good for you Laura! You are ready for almost anything now. And now you have a non food reward to enjoy.

I don't have any particularly interesting news. Nothing to be proud of, nothing to be ashamed of. I ate more than I should have of planned foods and am back on track now. I also managed to get in 15 min of light exercise today.

Also--SY is having a 50% off sale, if you are considering joining the online program....just sayin'.
This holiday was the FIRST TIME EVER IN MY LIFE--that I spent a weekend with my family and did not use the food before, during or after they left. Yeah me!!!

Suggestion: Its great that 'this time will be different' but perhaps chunking it down? You listed the things you ate and the desperation behind it. Journalling, or grounding or reminding yourself that you are YOU and can choose are all good strategies..but perhaps chunking it down to not a ' I will get through the weekend' but that each day you renew your vow to get through the DAY/MEAL/NEXT HOUR. A weekend is a long time--but if you binge like me--once you START binging its darn near impossible to STOP binging. So delay the start for as long as you can--hopefully all weekend..but just deal wth the day you are on and dont panic about THE WHOLE WEEKEND--it might be too BIG of a chunk of time. Also--can you make an escape/late entry possible? would hte earth collapse if you left early? pleading lots of work or studies?

I think I will do the token thing. To help me remind that I am a separate person and I have the power to change things.

Ohhh nice to see you Catquel! I have read a few of your blogs--and I can just hear the pain in your voice when it comes to your mom. Your mom, is like my mom. I know right? what an interesting breed. As Jodie knows, I continually deal with setting boundaries with my mom and sister--its been a very very long road. I am 51 and I have been doing SY for about 2 years..and its taken me those two years to FINALLY make some headway with my relationshp with them.
Like you, I used to Binge EVERY SINGLE TIME I went to my moms ( and my childhood home) If its any consolation--I stopped doing that about a year ago, because of SY.
Initally changing my relationship wth my mom caused me a lot of anxiety..and my sister as well--but if you start with little things, the bigger things because easier.
You asked for specific help, and I will give you things that helped me: but this is just me you will have to come up with your own 'list of strategies". :)
I: 1) picked a point I wanted to "win" when I went to her house. I didnt worry about changing EVERYTHING about our relationship--I just focused on ONE thing. For example, it really bugs me how she often judges outfits 'if they make me look fat". Normally when she said that i would get very defensive...and angry. But on the 1 thing to change plan...I changed how I responded to her. I replied with warmth and a smile " it might make me look fat, but I like how I feel in it" and then firmly change the subject.
2) I also took a talisman with me that reminded me of ME. A token, a piece of jewellery--anything that grounded and centered me.
3) I minimized my time at her house--I was lucky, I can drive and make some excuse as to why i have to leave--but sometimes I am stuck there all day and overnight..and I know that it was very difficult if I was stuck there..then I wear the talisman, or I put it somewhere VERY visible..
4) I would go and ground myself every half hour or so--go to the bathroom, recite a mantra/pray/ PAUSE...do something that grounds me....
and most importantly over the years, I CONTINUE to work on my reaction to my mom and sister--and realize that I cant change THEM, I can just change ME and my reaction TO them.

With SY, I continue to work on my relationshp iwth my mom and sister--and in fact, have planned a NON FOOD REWARD for when they leave my house on Sunday....For me, getting through a whole weekend in their company was nearly impossible without binging...now, two years later--its easier, but i know its still anxiety provoking.

Hello team!!!
I'm writing to ask for your help
I'm going to stay with my mom for the easter, and I'm kind of scared. When I visit her I binge the whole time, I clean the cupboards, the two month old muesli, the crackers that no one wanted. I don't exercise and I just escape somewhere else. I kind of put myself to the side, and literaly I neglect myself. I dont want it to happen this time. But I dont know how to handle the thing. Any ideas??
Thank you in advance

It has been an emotional few days for me but it's okay, it's even a good thing. Have a Tom Terrific Tuesday and I'll be back this evening to comment on the blog.

Today I will pause before I take a bite and ask whether it's real hunger or head hunger and then, since I'm the boss of me, I still get to choose whether I eat.

Well, it appears nothing is as it seems. Not sure about Easter any more. Family obligations changing by the second. Chocolate is a very manageable temptation. I can satisfy those cravings with a small amount. My larger problem is the savory meat and potatoes selections.

Good for you True! Hopefully Mom will respect your wishes.

It's good to hear from you Jodiest.

I can think of a bunch of holes in my life I try to fill with food...but more importantly-lets think of some strategies to fill those holes WITHOUT the food. :)

Yay Laura!!! You will make it through. It's like walkin' on the dang treadmill. You don't like it, but you know it has a finite end. Just keep breathing and practice all the skills you have mastered the past few months. (although I hate the saying) that which doesn't kill us, makes us stronger!

I'm good with the holiday. Already planning a healthy celebratory meal. It is a time for renewal. I'm not getting very far in SY. Reading small bits at a time.

Last night was rough. Both UK & UL in th Final Four. Yikes! I won't go into all the team rivalry stuff, but let's just say I ate during the game to "settle my nerves". And not healthy stuff either. Silly, I know. I'm not even that invested. I can hold it together for more personal issues, but this silly stuff untied me. Oh well. Today is a new day and I'm back on track. Already got my exercise in for the day.

Does that TOOL BAR at the BOTTOM of the page drive you crazy like it does me? I "hide" it and it keeps coming back. I went to the Message board for Technical Help and posted on a thread there where about 25 others have left posts about how they hate it and want it off. So, do go there and post your complaint. It is just an advertisement.

I love the word FAT, as it is the truth of the situation. emoticon Obese, pleasantly plump, full-figured, etc. all are just ways of saying you're fat without being honest. emoticon I wasn't fat until I was 41 and had my fifth child, so it isn't something I've enjoyed. Roger Gould, M.D. is the only person I've found who really understands that it is the stress that causes me to regain and then have to fight to get it back off. That is why I love his book.

A blog written by an at present, 'silent' member of our team is called: "Change doesnt happen by hoping". Take a read, if you have time. She talks about how we WANT change, and even long for it--yet often make few steps to really change, and to get what we want.
Dr. G would have us ask ourselves: WHY DO WE WANT TO STAY FAT? He would have us examine what exactly we GET From the binge--and have us take that out, look at it--and see what comes up.
Why do you want to stay fat? ( I hate using the word--'fat' but it works for me right now)

Hey Team.
Welcome to Naimatanner--our newest member. Just a reminder, that our discussions take place TWO places--here and on the forum DR. GOULDS BLOG LETS DISCUSS.
There are some pretty good discussions going on over there--about emotions and how we can better handle them--come on over and add your two cents!! I know for one, that I dont WAIT for very long--when I am angry/hurt I have to blurt it all out RIGHT NOW...and make YOU listen too. That doesnt get me very far for the most part....

Hey Team!
I just posted a new blog in the DR. Goulds BLOG LETS DISCUSS--forum. Its pretty good--and I dont remember reading it...I think the strategy might be handy to keep in mind, when the urge to eat strikes. Its something to think about it. We can discuss it there. :)
Bee--I think that it might be extra beneficial to you, being a newbie! :)

Jodie--I will share something with you that at first might seem glib and trite--but upon examination, its not really--it packs a powerful punch: " Jodie, if you worry, dont pray-and if you pray dont worry". Offer up your worries to God. Offer them up, then let them go. TRUST.
Now--that being said--some practical observations
What did Brian say when the Dr. told him his thoughts? Did B. scoff? or take the comments seriously?
When you voiced your concerns with B.--what did he say? Did he scoff? or take your concerns seriously? Did he 'hear' you? and if not, is there some other way you could get him to?
Does B. often have trouble relaxing? And if so, does he notice? want to change?
Is he a fit, healthy man in all areas, and just might need to be coaxed to do some stress relief? Or does he think its all Hooey?
I hear you though--I worry worry worry too --but its about my kid--and sometimes I just have to say out loud " ENOUGH!!!" FOR TODAY--things are JUST FINE.
Mathew 6:34 :
Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."

Full disclosure - I didn't finish my lunch but I ate too many bites. I was angry at stuff and didn't give a frig of course until after lunch when I cared a lot.

Not finishing a meal is the easy part for me, I never finish my food when I go out to a restaurant. The thing I don't always do well with is realizing that I need to leave even more food on the plate or order waaaaaaaaaaay less.

And, as long as we're on the topic, I'm CPing or as Dr. Gould calls it I'm making catastrophe predictions. My husband works too many hours. I struggle with not only missing him but worrying about his health. I fear he is going to stress/work himself into a heart attack. In fairness to me, I didn't pull this fear out of the blue, his cardiologist said it first. So in my mind I have him dead and buried which makes me feel scared and angry which makes me feel powerless which leads to???? Anyone??? Yes, eating too many bites. I know how to deal with this but the road that leads to the new way of dealing with feelings doesn't have those familiar tire grooves worn in it like the old, hey let's just eat about this way does, you know?

Oh my GOSH I can relate--I still buy tons of food--like way too much--even veggies!! Why do I think I will eat 6 green peppers this week?? My grocery bill is much bigger than it needs to be.
There is a certain sense of relief with that, because now, when I plan my lunches and breakfasts ( I eat breakfasts at work) I know I dont need that much food, so I dont need to pack as much. Its--one less thing I gotta worry about.
Jodie--did you stop eating when you were full? inquiring minds wanna know. emoticon

Anyhoo - Portion size. I know I've heard/read a lot about portion size and how restaurants make the portions too big. I realized it, agreed even but holy cow! Case in point, I just went to lunch and got a cup of soup and half a sandwich. I was full before I finished even half a sandwich. My mind is having trouble catching up. I should have just ordered the cup of soup but I don't believe yet that that will be enough. Can anyone relate?

And I can't remember the last time I was actually hungry for Thanksgiving dinner.

"Ash-I am sorry you feel that way, but as you wish; if not posting is a boundary you feel you have to set then you should set it."

Huh? You and Jodie asked me to drop the subject; it isn't MY boundary. But I'm saying that's fine, I don't want to talk about it any more myself. I only carried on the back and forth that long anyway because it really seemed like the two of you, especially Jodie, were responding to something that I wasn't actually saying.

Anyway, I think I will take a break for a while; apparently someone else is struggling with something and I'll feel like an arse if I keep carrying on about this.

Bees--Have you noticed that since you have lost weight ( and I assume you have been eating smaller portions?? among other things) that your appetite is less, and that you are satisfied with smaller portions? And if so--are you stopping when full? Are you eating mindfully now? I think thats my biggest road block--eating mindfully.

Jodie--Have you noticed that as you have stopped grazing--you are legitimately hungrier more?? I would imagine that you would be...I know on days when I popped 'bites' into my mouth all day, I wasnt ever really hungry....I am thinking days like Thanksgiving, when I spend all day cooking and tasting etc--then when its time to eat, I wasnt hungry at all!

Ash-I am sorry you feel that way, but as you wish; if not posting is a boundary you feel you have to set then you should set it.
