Hi everyone, I wondered how everyone is finding the online program since its been about a year since the last update. I just bought the book and a lot of what is being said resonates with me. I have also read a few of Geneen Roth's books which have some similiar material..I would love to hear about your experiences with the online program. Thanks in advance.

I absolutely love Dr. Gould, but I think his online program might be more useful for people who have only dieted before and not tried to use an anti-diet program before. I, too, was very aware of the emotions behind my eating. I was also aware that at the time I did the online program, I was not willing to give up the easy comfort food provided. Most of the activities that I came up with as alternatives to eating involved having to wait to be in another situation and nothing was as easy as that burrito in the car or a bag of chocolate on my desk when I had to work late.

I feel that his recommendations for healthy eating are a step in the right direction, but recommending 3 meals and 2 snacks-which I consider the party line-- gave me too many opportunities to eat in a day. I am so grateful that I've learned to tolerate some hunger consistently and 3 good meals a day, with cafe au lait and stevia in between, if needed, has been the key. Now I don't fear situations in which I may have to go several hours between meals and get hungry. I often like feeling hungry and will sometimes purposely get involved in something that will keep from having a meal an extra hour just so I will enjoy my food even more. I don't find that that makes me want to binge at all. I'm more relaxed on weekends, when it's more likely I will have especially nice eating situations to enjoy, and I'm getting better about eating less then, too. But I think it may also be that we all reach a point at which we know we have to make something work; some people reach it just before they do SY online. I am glad for them because I just don't think people who end up on some program that has them shunning fun food all the time are as happy as we free eaters are! And on maintenance teams here, I find that people say they don't forbid themselves any food when they really want it. emoticon

Sometimes things seem to get "worse" before they get "better" so I think just staying through the 12 weeks is what matters.

I've not needed to do the course, but know a lot of people who took it and thought it was a GREAT help. I'm sure that the message boards aren't as active as they use to be since the book isn't in the "news" like it was. Maybe there is a FACEBOOK place for discussion now since it seems that everything is over there.

I am reading the book and am now doing the online program. I am finding that now that there's a "spotlight" on my emotional eating, it actually is making it WORSE? Did anyone else find that? I think about it non-stop and am guilty now about any food I eat or think about. UGH. When will this end? I am hoping by the end of the 12 weeks it will be better.....

I ended up completing the online program, then asking for, and receiving, a refund.

There was a lot more activity on the discussion boards a few years ago when it was free. Any posts I made while doing the online program received replies, and I appreciated them. I was just hoping for a much more active forum to read, the way it used to be.

I know that a lot of people have been very satisfied with the online program. It just happened that I wasn't one of them this time.

Becky, I am sorry that the online program became a dissappointment for you. However, from your comments in the beginning, it sounded to me like the first week or so was not a disspointment, but then you got discouraged. Being dissappointed after 3 more weeks certainly can be a reason not to want to invest in keeping going with the whole program, but I have noticed that people go through cycles when they binge and are just not really motivated-- cycles of getting discouraged. If you hoped it was a magic bullet-- maybe you just aren't ready for this kind of program at this particular cycle in your life. It is definitely a "habit" and lifestyle change, long term nentality kind of program. I've noticed quite a few people drop the program and later come back to it.

I am one of those that didn't tend to have really big binges, I'm more of a grazer/compulsive overeater than a binger-- and it's worked really well for me. One thing that sounds like it is different between you and me is your statement that you already know what feelings cause you to overeat. For me, and many other in SY, we know we eat more when "stressed" or "tired", but often eat when we are distracting ourselves from feelings we don't even realize we are having. The program helps us learn to sort out the feelings. But it sounds like if you already are fully aware of that when you are eating, then you need something that is more focused on helping you find alternative coping methods.

For others reading this considering the online program, I do want to say I've been part of the online program for 2 1/2 years. Just the past 2-3 weeks have been the least active I have ever seen the forum. I'm not sure if it is just pre-Christmas and one of those things. I do expect that forum will get very active again-- but who knows. I know I have been much less active lately. But I still fully believe that forum is MUCH more active than the one here, and that there are very, very few threads started that don't get at least some response to.

I wonder if the program is meant more for people who actively binge, rather than those who eat emotionally, but don't binge?

I don't binge, and I already know what feelings cause me to eat emotionally.

I also thought it would be more of a non-diet/intuitive eating type program, but it seems to have as its objective teaching people about their emotions so they can STAY ON THEIR DIET.

I'm glad for those who have gotten a lot out of the program. I signed up on a whim, and admit that I was looking more for a "magic bullet" of weight loss.

It's just disappointing.

With respect, I do not agree with your opinion. The on-line program has work wonders for me. It has help me out sort my feelings. Today I can clearly Identify the emotions that are triggering my desire to eat. I have lots of new insight of self and had been able to manage some overeating situations. I am going control over my eating habits.

I've just completed Week Four of the program, and I have to say, I no longer think it was worth the money I paid.

It seems like a lot of psychological mumbo-jumbo, a lot of "click on your choice" for answers, and I'm not getting much out of it now.

One of the biggest reasons I signed up was so that I could have access to the discussion boards, but they don't seem to be very active.

I'm just writing this for others who might be wondering whether or not the online program is worth it. At this point, I'd say no. You can probably do just as well by participating on this Spark Team.

Thank you both. :)

I did the first online lesson this morning, and I was really amazed at the insights I was able to pick up.

Seeing how they put their material together with some of my answers looks like it will be helpful.

Becky, the online program WILL help. You just have to work it.
I just started week 8 and I see that I have all the tools I need to stave off a binge.
Most times I can. Occasionally I can't, yet the amount of food I am eating is far less. So far, so good.
I'll look for you around the message boards, they're so helpful !

Well, I realized that I was just rationalizing and making excuses when I said I couldn't justify the Shrink Yourself online fees. Actually, I'm just SO afraid that nothing will ever help me lose some of this weight that I'm afraid to try anything else.

But I decided to give it one more try, so I just enrolled in the online program.

I hope it helps.

I received the thirty per cent off offer too, and have been thinking about it, but at this point, with the economy the way it is (and getting worse every day), I've decided that it would be of more value to me to use the money I would have spent on the program on groceries instead.

If things in this country get as bad as I think they might, none of us will be worrying about losing weight anyway--because we WILL be, whether we want to or not.

I've visited the site many times and I'm on their email list - haven't bought the book, though. But over the past few months I've seen a few "coupons" such as 20% off at Father's Day (which I didn't do at the time), and just this past week, I got a 30% offer... so I'm a bit like you, Becky - wondering whether to sink the money into it.

I was on the Emotional Eating Spark Team, still am, but it never seemed to click with me the way reading the emails from Shrink Yourself. (and I don't remember now where I first read about SY.). Just on a lark, I decided to search SparkPeople (it gives you a point or two, right? heh!) and see if there was a SY Team. Woo hoo!

So anyway... and of course, now that money is tight, I start thinking, oh no, I shouldn't ask my husband - but when I asked him about it after the Father's day 20% off - he said go do it! And when I got back to check on it, the deal was off. So I've been biding my time, but they are offering the 30% this week.

And it's certainly is stressful enough with my husband's mom just about to decline to the point of going on Hospice, so it's all a bit overwhelming and I find myself numbing out.

Sooooooo Becky... are ya gonna race me to joining the Shrink Yourself?? ;-)

hi Becky, I did not lose any weight after doing the 12 week programme but then I am trying to change a 35 year habit of using food as "comfort" rather than trying to deal with my real feelings and life in general. I bought the book 2 years ago and itmade sense but the 12 week programme is far farr superior because it breaks down each issue personally for you alone.although not losing weight i feel that my mind is starting to get to the right place and i have continued to pay monthly because i want to do it again and because the support is there and only there.the programme is so much more than justt losing the weight.i can lose weight,i have done 4/5 times but i always put it back on cos i have not dealt with the emotional issues.that is what shrink yourself helps with.

Hello Molly!

I am in the second day of my on-line program and it is even better than reading the book.

I have identified the motivations that I have to lose weight and the motivation I have for no stopping my emotional eating. They generate, both lists, for me to compare and contrast; I printed, them out and it has been so eye opening.

Now I can say, I understand my emotional eating and I got all the burden of my shoulders. I do not feel inadequate or a failure anymore; It is not my fault or that I lack will power. I feel so much better. So use your program and let's keep in touch.

I just signed up for the online program.

FYI - I searched for "Shrink Yourself prom code" in Google and found a promo code that was $30 off the Premium Account. So, instead of $119 it was $89 for 3 months.

Susan, thank you for sharing and letting us know how it helped you. It is encouraging to know that there might be hope. And congratulations!

I hope to be posting a good review. :-)

Thank you for the replies.

I wish they hadn't shut down the forums to non-members, because I used to enjoy them.

Those of you who have lost weight, did you lose because of Shrink Yourself, or did you have to do Spark, Weight Watchers, low carb, or some kind of regimented eating and exercise plan?

For me, I do better with an intuitive eating, or non-diet style, but as soon as I get it in my mind that I'm going to start restricting in any way, that's when I start "last suppering"--eating all kinds of stuff before I deny it to myself.

I believe that all my eating issues stem from having gotten on the diet roller coaster over 30 years ago. The scale has been going up, up, up ever since.

I read the Shrink Yourself book, and thought it was good, but it didn't change my life or anything. I'm trying to decide whether or not I'd get anything out of the online program.

If the forums are a lot more active than it is here, it might be worth it to join just for them.

Not sure yet...

~Becky

It's been worth it for me many, many times over. It's really changed my life.

I started the online program first and did it about 4 weeks before I also read the book. I don't think just reading the book would have been life changing for me though, like the online program has been. I tend to read things and then kind of forget them, or not really apply them after I am not reading them anymore.

The online program sends you one session a week, and then has workbooks and recommended ways to work on those issues throughout the week. At first I didn't like it that I had to wait to get the next session. But it forced me to apply the concepts more.

For me the forum there has also been fantastic. Things are discussed in a much more personal, in-depth way there than on any other forum I have been on. I like Sparks-- but it is just not at all the same, it never has hooked me in in the same way and lead to the kind of growth that I get there.

Some people lose weight right away with the online program and others change their lives quite abit and don't start losing weight until after the 12 weeks. But I'm convinced the changes are far more permanent lifestyle changes, either way.

I'm one of those that has re-upped for the program for over two years (because after the 12 weeks it's only $9.95 per month) because I am continuing to change and solidify my new habits to make it a permanent change. I have lost over 75 pounds and am very near a healthy weight now. Actually I've lost that kind of weight before Shrink Yourself, but before it was sheer willpower and when I lost the motivation I put the weight back on and then some.

I'm convinced that SY has taught me many concepts and habit changes I never learned in many years of succcessful dieting (and years of putting weight back on when I wasn't dieting.) I really believe that now I can maintain my weight. I'm really testing that out now because recently I've had back problems and can't exercise the way I always did when I was losing weight. So far, after six weeks, my appetite has still stayed under control and I haven't gained back any more weight (in fact I think I've lost another pound or two.)

Hi, Becky,
I am on week five of the online group. Considering how much I spend on binge foods over the course of a month, $39 a month for three months wasn't a large investment, although initially that did hold me back a bit.
I have not lost much weight there, however what I am learning are tools that are going to change the way I look at food for the rest of my life. It's not a diet and exercise program. Haven't we tried enough diets that have failed?
I would encourage you to join the program. I have the book too, but it doesn't touch what I am getting from the website.

I'm torn about signing up for the online program. (I have the book.)

On one hand, I think it might hold the key for me, but on the other--it might just be a big waste of money, since I've tried SO many other ways to lose weight.

Has the program been worth it to you? Have you been able to lose any weight?
