I'm so happy with my progress right now, since I have gotten into the OVERWEIGHT BMI category, that I don't want to ruin that with Holiday eating. I see my next goal at being 140# which is 24.9 BMI for me and in the NORMAL range and I want to get there. The Holidays can be a sad time for many. I know I miss my childhood and all the fun Holidays were. The saying "You can never go home again" becomes true when you get older.
My main approach is to be very, very consciously trying to Listen to My Body and Savor My Food at all family gatherings. I also do not go there hungry. I usually eat a small amount of nuts prior to the gathering to make sure my hunger level is low when I am faced with all those holiday treats that are not a part of my lifestyle. When I am at the gathering, if I decide I need to try one of the foods, I make sure and eat it very, very slowly-- focusing on the aroma, taste, texture, etc. I try to notice how my tastebuds "burst" with the flavor and not take another bite until the burst is gone. Usually just a few bites will satisfy me, so I take very small portions. Before I take another portion, I very consciously feel around in my stomach for how full it is. Often this way, I get fully satisfied on a small amount.
I don't feel deprived doing this. It makes me feel very powerful, knowing the difference between where I have come from and where I am now!
Well folks, the holidays are fast approaching. Halloween, Thanksgiving, Chanukah and Christmas will be here before we know it! What small steps will you be taking to prevent yourself from bingeing during holiday/family time?
Joshua 1:9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go." (NIV)
